Description

ORAL CARE COMPOSITIONCROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS

[0001] This application claims the benefit of priority from U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 63 / 545,816, filed October 26, 2023, the disclosure of which is incorporated herein by reference.FIELD OF THE INVENTION

[0002] The present invention relates to an oral care composition.BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

[0003] Thickening polymers are commonly present in compositions for teeth cleaning products, such as a toothpaste formulation. A thickening polymer helps creates a smooth, creamy texture that is easy to brush with, prevents separation of the formulation, and / or improve the delivery of active ingredients. Xanthan gum is one of the most widely used thickening polymers because of its strong thickening capacity and great stability. However, the usage of xanthan gum has several side effects including increasing stringiness in the formulation. If a formulation is stringy, the formulation is normally messier during usage, and overall is less preferred to a consumer. Thus, there is a need for an oral care composition having an improved texture that may signal premiumization and creates a unique experience to a user.SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0087] The present invention will now be more fully described with reference to the accompanying examples. It should be understood, however, that the following description is illustrative only and should not be taken in any way as a restriction of the invention.Rheology Study

[0088] A study was conducted to compare the rheology of different thickening polymers in the oral care composition. This study was conducted to understand the rheology profile difference of tara gum, glucomannan and alginate when compared to xanthan gum. To perform this study, simple solutions of the gums were made by adding 1% of the gum to 19% of glycerin, which was mixed well before adding to DI water. For the alginate sample, 0.01% of CaC12 powder was added to the DI water before adding the gummixture, which was found to help reach the target viscosity. The rheology of these gels was analyzed using a TA instrument HR rheometer.

[0089] As shown in Figure 1, the sample containing xanthan gum held a stead viscosity at low shear stress, and then sharply dropped after high shear stress. The sample including glucomannan appeared to have similar viscosity at the lower end of shear stress but started to drop at a less steep rate earlier than the xanthan gum sample. The sample with tara gum had a lower viscosity when compared to xanthan gum and glucomannan, but the tara gum sample exhibited higher viscosity than them at high shear stress. The unique behavior of the tara gum sample enables a late and smooth breaking of the polymer structure, where the xanthan gum sample showed an earlier and abrupt breaking. The sample including carrageenan had the lowest viscosity among all the samples. The sample including alginate demonstrated a unique profile where higher viscosity was only detected at high shear stress. Because of the unique viscosity profiles of these gums, the present inventors found that combinations of the gums created new formula textures.Adhesion and Cohesion Study

[0090] The Samples prepared for the rheology study discussed above, were further tested to study the adhesion and cohesion properties. Adhesion is also referred to loss modulus of the composition, and cohesion is also referred to as storage modulus. Both of these properties are important for application of the oral care composition. A higher adhesion indicates the potential of better mouth coating and delivery of an active agent to the oral surface, while cohesion suggests better structure integrity of the composition.

[0091] As can be seen in Figures 2 and 3, the sample of tara gum had lower storage modulus and higher loss modulus, indicating better spreadability than xanthan gum. The glucomannan sample had similar storage modulus and higher loss modulus which outlined better coating effect than xanthan gum. The sample including alginate had both higher adhesion and cohesion when compared to xanthan gum, implying better gel structure and coating effect to oral surfaces. The sample including carrageenan on the other hand showed lower adhesion and cohesion when compared to xanthan gum, indicating a weaker gel structure that can spread easily.Example 1

[0092] An oral care composition in accordance with the present disclosure was prepared. The oral care composition was prepared including both xanthan gum and tara gum was to show the effect of the combination of thickening polymers. The viscosity profile of this composition was studied with the rheometer and compared with a marketed benchmark toothpaste (Aquafresh Extreme Clean), which utilizes only xanthan gum as a thickener.Table 1 Oral Care Composition Formulation including 0.5% Xanthan Gum and 0.25% Tara Gum

[0093] As can been seen in Figure 4, the composition of the present disclosure held a similar viscosity profile as the benchmark toothpaste, where they both maintained higher viscosity at low shear stress then significantly dropped as shear stress increased. This viscosity profile enables a unique property of the oral care composition, where the oral care composition holds shape when being placed on a toothbrush but then rapidly dissociates during brushing. When compared to the benchmark formulation, the sample of the present disclosure dissociates / breaks up at a lower shear stress.

[0094] In terms of stringiness, a demonstration was designed to showcase the stringiness difference between the sample and benchmark. The bottom of a glass beaker was pressed against the samples and was then pulled up. As can be seen in Figure 5, the benchmark composition (on left side) pulls out significant longer string when compared to the composition of the present disclosure. Thus, the usage of tara gum in combination with xanthan gum significantly reduced the stringiness of a toothpaste prepared with xanthan gum alone.Examples 2 to 7

[0095] An oral care compositions in accordance with the present disclosure were prepared with xanthan gum, tar a gum, glucomannan, and algin to show the effect of the combination of thickening polymers. The viscosity profile of this composition was studied with the rheometer and compared with a marketed benchmark toothpaste (Aquafresh Extreme Clean), which utilizes only xanthan gum as a thickener.Table 2 Oral Care Composition Formulation having Tara Gum With Another Thickeniung PolymerTable 3 Oral Care Composition Formulation having Xanthan Gum With Another Thickening PolymerConsumer Panel

[0096] A small consumer panel was also conducted to evaluate the sample composition compared to the benchmark in view of the consumer perspective. Ten selected panelists familiar with sensory testing evaluations were given the sample composition of Table 1 and the benchmark toothpaste containing only xanthan gum. The compositions were given in random order. The sensory evaluation results of the consumer panel are presented in Figure 6. When rated in pairwise comparison, the sample of Table 1 was rated as exhibiting more foaminess. While other parameters, particularly clean feel after brushing and overall preference seem to trend higher for the examples, the differences are not statistically significant. On the other hand, toothpaste standup was another important attribute to the consumer experience. Morepanelist favored the standup / shape of the composition of Table 1 verse the benchmark.

[0097] Thus, preparing a composition including xanthan gum and an additional thickening polymer built structure to the formula while offering different rheology profiles when compared to oral care compositions including only xanthan gum. Based on these tests, the present inventors theorize that the addition of tara gum, glucomannan and / or alginate have the potential to provide positive attributes to oral care composition, like standup, foaminess and clean feel after brushing.
