AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Current wireless communication systems face challenges in efficiently managing physical uplink control channel (PUCCH) repetition, particularly in scenarios where dedicated PUCCH resources have not been configured, such as during handovers based on contention-based or contention-free random access procedures.

Method used

The proposed solution involves a system and method where a wireless communication device reports its capability for PUCCH repetition to a wireless communication node, which then provides an indication of the repetition factor. This indication can be configured through higher layer signaling, such as System Information Blocks (SIB) or Downlink Control Information (DCI) signaling, allowing the device to perform PUCCH repetition on common PUCCH resources before dedicated resources are configured.

Benefits of technology

This approach enables efficient PUCCH repetition on common PUCCH resources, even before dedicated resources are configured, thereby improving communication reliability and performance during handovers and other scenarios where dedicated resources are not available.

[0029] The network communication module 218 generally represents the hardware, software, firmware, processing logic, and / or other components of the base station 202 that enable bi-directional communication between base station transceiver 210 and other network components and communication nodes configured to communication with the base station 202. For example, network communication module 218 may be configured to support internet or WiMAX traffic. In a typical deployment, without limitation, network communication module 218 provides an 802.3 Ethernet interface such that base station transceiver 210 can communicate with a conventional Ethernet based computer network. In this manner, the network communication module 218 may include a physical interface for connection to the computer network (e.g., Mobile Switching Center (MSC) ) . The terms “configured for, ” “configured to” and conjugations thereof, as used herein with respect to a specified operation or function, refer to a device, component, circuit, structure, machine, signal, etc., that is physically constructed, programmed, formatted and / or arranged to perform the specified operation or function.

[0030] The Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) Model (referred to herein as, “open system interconnection model” ) is a conceptual and logical layout that defines network communication used by systems (e.g., wireless communication device, wireless communication node) open to interconnection and communication with other systems. The model is broken into seven subcomponents, or layers, each of which represents a conceptual collection of services provided to the layers above and below it. The OSI Model also  defines a logical network and effectively describes computer packet transfer by using different layer protocols. The OSI Model may also be referred to as the seven-layer OSI Model or the seven-layer model. In some embodiments, a first layer may be a physical layer. In some embodiments, a second layer may be a Medium Access Control (MAC) layer. In some embodiments, a third layer may be a Radio Link Control (RLC) layer. In some embodiments, a fourth layer may be a Packet Data Convergence Protocol (PDCP) layer. In some embodiments, a fifth layer may be a Radio Resource Control (RRC) layer. In some embodiments, a sixth layer may be a Non Access Stratum (NAS) layer or an Internet Protocol (IP) layer, and the seventh layer being the other layer.

[0031] Various example embodiments of the present solution are described below with reference to the accompanying figures to enable a person of ordinary skill in the art to make and use the present solution. As would be apparent to those of ordinary skill in the art, after reading the present disclosure, various changes or modifications to the examples described herein can be made without departing from the scope of the present solution. Thus, the present solution is not limited to the example embodiments and applications described and illustrated herein. Additionally, the specific order or hierarchy of steps in the methods disclosed herein are merely example approaches. Based upon design preferences, the specific order or hierarchy of steps of the disclosed methods or processes can be re-arranged while remaining within the scope of the present solution. Thus, those of ordinary skill in the art will understand that the methods and techniques disclosed herein present various steps or acts in a sample order, and the present solution is not limited to the specific order or hierarchy presented unless expressly stated otherwise.

[0032] 2. Systems and Methods for Physical Uplink Control Channel Repetition Indication

[0033] A PUCCH (Physical Uplink Control Channel) can be used to carry uplink control information. The uplink control information can include HARQ-ACK (Hybrid Automatic Repeat reQuest -ACKnowledgement) for downlink data reception. Msg4 HARQ-ACK can be the HARQ-ACK_feedback for a fourth message in a four-message / four-step handshake of an initial access procedure. With regards to PUCCH repetition for Msg4 HARQ-ACK, a Reference Signal Receive Power (RSRP) threshold can be configured via a System Information Block (SIB) when the number of repetitions is configured by the SIB, to determine whether the capability of the PUCCH repetition on common PUCCH resource (s) is reported by the wireless communication device (e.g., UE) or not. When the RSRP threshold is configured, a User Equipment (UE) that is capable of PUCCH repetition for Msg4 HARQ-ACK can report the capability of PUCCH repetition for the Msg4 HARQ-ACK when the measured RSRP is lower than the configured RSRP threshold. When / if the RSRP threshold is not configured, a UE that is capable of PUCCH repetition for Msg4 HARQ-ACK may / should report the UE’s capability for PUCCH repetition for Msg4 HARQ-ACK. The specific repetition factor to use can be indicated by a Downlink Assignment Index (DAI) field in a Downlink Control Information (DCI) signaling, when multiple repetition factors are configured / possible / available. If only one repetition factor is configured / available, a UE that is capable of PUCCH repetition for Msg4 HARQ-ACK can report the capability of PUCCH repetition for Msg4 HARQ-ACK. The UE can perform PUCCH repetition with the repetition factor configured by the SIB.

[0034] The DAI field can be considered when dynamic indication of the repetition factor is used / desired. The DCI for scheduling the Msg4 Physical Downlink Shared Channel (PDSCH) during the initial access can be  scrambled using a Temporary C-RNTI (Cell Radio Network Temporary Identifier) , and the state of the DAI can be reserved. The connected mode can include a random-access channel (RACH) process (such as a handover based on a contention based RACH) . The UE can use the target cell's common PUCCH resource to provide feedback to HARQ-ACK before receiving the target cell's dedicated configuration. The UE can report a C-RNTI in Msg3 during handover. The DCI scheduling Msg4 and / or other data transmissions can be directly scrambled with C-RNTI instead of TC-RNTI.

[0035] FIG. 3 illustrates an example process of a non-terrestrial network. The link between the UE and a satellite can be a service link. The link between a Base Station (BS) and the satellite can be a feeder link.

[0036] Step 1. The UE can transmit a Physical Random Access Channel (PRACH) preamble with a RA-RNTI (Random Access-Radio Network Temporary Identifier) when the conditions for the PRACH transmission are met.

[0037] Step 2. A Next Generation Node B (gNB) can send a DCI scrambled with the RA-RNTI. The UE can detect a PDCCH (DCI) with the corresponding RA-RNTI within the period of a Msg2 or Random Access Response (RAR) -Window. When the UE decodes the PDCCH, the UE can decode a PDSCH transmission carrying the RAR data. After decoding the RAR, the UE can check if the RAPID in the RAR matches the RAPID assigned to the UE.

[0038] Step 3. The UE can transmit Msg3 (PUSCH transmission) on the same serving cell to which it sent the PRACH. If the UE has unique identity (such as a C-RNTI) , the C-RNTI can be carried in Msg3; otherwise, the core network identity can be carried in Msg3.

[0039] Step 4. When Msg3 contains the C-RNTI, the gNB can scramble the PDCCH transmission using the C-RNTI. If the C-RNTI is absent, the gNB can use the TC-RNTI to scramble the PDCCH transmission.

[0040] Sub-step A. A UE identified by a unique C-RNTI can monitor to decode the PDCCH scrambled with the C-RNTI. If the UE successfully decodes the PDCCH, it can confirm the successful completion of the random access procedure.

[0041] Sub-step B. The UE (s) that do not have a unique C-RNTI can monitor to decode the PDCCH transmission scrambled with the TC-RNTI. If the UE successfully decodes the PDCCH transmission, the UE can decode the PDSCH transmission to retrieve the MAC Control Element (MAC CE) and the UE can set the value of TC-RNTI to C-RNTI when the core network identity carried in Msg3 equals to the identity carried in Msg4.

[0042] Step 5. When the UE successfully decodes Msg4, (the Contention Resolution message mentioned in Step4B) , the UE can transmit a HARQ ACK in response to the data (such as for the PDSCH transmission that carries Msg4) .

[0043] Example Implementation 1: PUCCH repetition in common PUCCH resource in CONNECTED state

[0044] In a CONNECTED state, the UE can have a dedicated configuration (such as a unique identity or identifier (e.g., C-RNTI) configured by the network, or a dedicated PUCCH resource, etc. ) . However, in some  cases (e.g., handover based on connection based RACH, or connection free RACH (e.g., handover based on connection based RACH) ) , the dedicated PUCCH resource may not be or has not been configured. In certain scenarios, like during handovers that rely on connection-based RACH or connection-free RACH procedures, the dedicated PUCCH resource may not yet be configured; therefore, how to define the PUCCH repetition on / using common PUCCH resources before configuring dedicated PUCCH resources can be considered.

[0045] PUCCH repetition can refer to the repetition (e.g., repeated transmissions) on / using common PUCCH resources, such as resources after the successful completion of contention based RACH (e.g., CBRA in the handover) process, before the configuration of dedicated PUCCH resources, or after the successful completion of contention free RACH (e.g., CFRA in the handover) , and / or before the configuration of dedicated PUCCH resource (s) .

[0046] If PUCCH repetition is supported for PUCCH transmission when dedicated PUCCH resource configuration is not provided, the following method for PUCCH repetition on common PUCCH resources in the CONNECTED state, before configuring dedicated PUCCH resources, can be considered.

[0047] The capability of PUCCH repetition can reuse (e.g., be determined to be the same as) the capability of the PUCCH repetition reported previously (e.g., reported in initial random access, reported in Msg3 in the handover based on contention based RACH, etc. ) .

[0048] Step 1: When a UE that is capable of PUCCH repetition does not report the capability of PUCCH repetition, the PUCCH repetition on common PUCCH resource may not be allowed.

[0049] Step 2: When a UE that is capable of PUCCH repetition have reported the capability of PUCCH repetition, in some case, the repetition factor can be configured by higher layer signaling (e.g., SIB, RRC, MAC CE, etc. ) from the network  / base station, such as by a handover command, a RRC reconfiguration, a reconfiguration with sync, or other signaling, etc. In some case, if only one repetition factor is configured in the SIB signaling (e.g., SIB signaling of the target cell, SIB signaling for initial access, or SIB signaling of the target cell with UE in CONNECTED state, SIB signaling for UE in CONNECTED state, etc. ) , the same repetition factor can be applied for the PUCCH repetition on common PUCCH resources for the UE in CONNECTED state.

[0050] In some case, if multiple repetition factors are configured in SIB signaling (e.g., SIB signaling of the target cell, SIB signaling for initial access, or SIB signaling of the target cell with UE in CONNECTED state, SIB signaling for UE in CONNECTED state) , the repetition factor can be defined / indicated / specified via as one or more of the following A-E for the UE in CONNECTED state:

[0051] A. Reusing existing bit field in the DCI (e.g., which can be scrambled by C-RNTI / TC-RNTI, etc. ) or other DCI for scheduling UL / DL transmission, to indicate the repetition factor for PUCCH repetition on common PUCCH resource, such as via a value indicated by 2 bits in a MCS field (the 2 bits in the MCS field can be the highest two bits or the lowest two bits) , where the 2 bits in the MCS field indicating the number of repetitions for PUCCH according to Table 1, when the higher layer parameter (e.g., SIB signaling) is configured with at least two values and the UE has indicated capability of PUCCH repetition on common PUCCH resource; one of 4 states indicated in PUCCH resource indicator field (e.g., with repetition factor configuration per PUCCH  resource) , one of 4 states indicated in HARQ process number field, one of 4 states indicated in PDSCH-to-HARQ_feedback timing indicator field, where the 4 states indicating the number of repetitions for PUCCH according to Table 2, when the higher layer parameter (e.g., SIB signaling) is configured with at least two values and the UE has indicated capability of PUCCH repetition on common PUCCH resource; and / or a value indicated by 2 bits in a reserved field.

[0052] B. A new field with 2 bits in the DCI to indicate the repetition factor for the PUCCH repetition on common PUCCH resource (s) .

[0053] C. CRC bits for scrambling of the DCI scheduling the Msg4 PDSCH. 2 CRC bits, such as those other than bits scrambled by TC-RNTI / C-RNTI, can be used as dynamic indication to indicate the repetition factor for the PUCCH repetition on common PUCCH resource. The first two MSB bits of the CRC can be scrambled with the information regarding the number of PUCCH repetitions (or repetition factor) , and the UE can be able to retrieve such information via descrambling in the same way as for the TC-RNTI.

[0054] D. A field in the DCI scheduling Msg3 (PUSCH transmission) . The PUCCH repetition factor can be indicated jointly with Msg3 repetition factor by using a pre-defined / configured relationship between the PUCCH repetition factor and the Msg3 repetition factor. If the Msg3 repetition factor is configured, the repetition factor of PUCCH repetition on common PUCCH resource can be a specific fraction (or multiple or function) of the Msg3 repetition factor; otherwise PUCCH transmission on common PUCCH resource can not support repetition.

[0055] E. Implicit mapping between the repetition factor of the PUCCH repetition on the common PUCCH resource, and indication of the Msg3 PUSCH repetition with no re-interpreted field  / new field (i.e., no change to existing DCI format / design) . If the Msg3 repetition factor is configured, the repetition factor of PUCCH on common PUCCH resource can be same as the Msg3 repetition factor; otherwise, PUCCH transmission on common PUCCH resource can not support repetition.

[0056] Table 1: 2 bits of MCS field / reserved bits field / new field / 2 CRC

[0057] Table 2: 4 possible states that can be indicated in PUCCH resource indicator field / HARQ process number field / PDSCH-to-HARQ_feedback timing indicator field

[0058] In accordance with section 2 (A, or B) . The mapping rules for the 2 bits for dynamic indication can be defined / configured as: the 1st / 2nd / 3rd / 4th configured repetition factors can be mapped to “00” , “01” , “10” , “11” values / codepoints of a 2-bit field, respectively. When the 3rd and / or the 4th repetition factors is / are not configured, the corresponding codepoint (s) (i.e., “10” and / or “11” ) can be not used, such as depicted in Table 1. The mapping rules for the 4 states for dynamic indication can be defined / configured as: the 1st / 2nd / 3rd / 4th configured repetition factors can be mapped to “state 1” , “state 2” , “state 3” , “state 4” of 4 possible / available states, indicated in PUCCH resource indicator field / HARQ process number field / PDSCH-to-HARQ_feedback timing indicator field, respectively. When the 3rd and / or the 4th repetition factors is / are not configured, the corresponding state (s)  / codepoint (s) (e.g., “10” and / or “11” ) can be not used, such as depicted in Table 2.

[0059] FIG. 4 illustrates an example process of scrambling of a cyclic redundancy check with information on the number of physical uplink control channel repetitions, in accordance with section 2 (C) . In FIG. 4, the mapping rules for the 2 bits can be defined / configured as: the 1st / 2nd / 3rd / 4th configured repetition factors can use “00” , “01” , “10” , “11” values / codepoints scrambling with 2 bits of CRC, respectively. When the 3rd and / or the 4th repetition factors is / are not configured, the corresponding codepoint (s) (i.e., “10” and / or “11” ) can be not used, such as depicted in Table 1.

[0060] The capability of the PUCCH repetition can reuse (e.g., can be determined using / by) the capability of the PUCCH repetition if reported previously (e.g., reported in initial random access, reported in Msg3 in the handover based on contention based RACH, and / or reported in Msg3 in the handover based on contention free RACH, etc. ) ; otherwise the capability of PUCCH repetition can be reported by using the higher layer signaling of Msg3 in the new RACH (e.g., the contention based RACH in handover, the contention free RACH in handover, another initial random access) . The higher layer signaling can be at least one of the logical channel identifier (LCID) codepoints, R bits in the MAC subheader, or other fields.

[0061] If a UE that is capable of the PUCCH repetition have reported the capability of PUCCH repetition previously, the PUCCH repetition on common PUCCH resource (e.g., the common resource in target cell with the UE in CONNECTED state, or the common resource for UE in CONNECTED state, etc. ) can support the PUCCH repetition. The repetition factors for the UE in CONNECTED state can be configured in the same manner as in Step 2.

[0062] If the capability has not been previously reported (e.g., the UE has not conveyed its PUCCH repetition ability) , then the higher layer signaling of Msg3 (e.g., Msg3 in the target cell with the UE in CONNECTED state, or a Msg3 sent by the UE in CONNECTED state) can be used to report the capability of PUCCH repetition on common PUCCH resource. The repetition factor for the PUCCH repetition for the UE in CONNECTED state can be defined / indicated / determined as follows:

[0063] A. A UE that is capable of PUCCH repetition can report the capability of the PUCCH repetition in the signaling of Msg3. The repetition factor can be configured in the same manner as Step 2 (e.g., for the target cell with the UE in CONNECTED state, or for the UE in CONNECTED state) .

[0064] B. A UE that is capable of the PUCCH repetition may not report the capability of PUCCH repetition in the signaling of Msg3. PUCCH repetition on the common PUCCH resource may not be allowed in such a scenario.

[0065] The capability of the PUCCH repetition can be reported by using the higher layer signaling of the Msg3 in the new RACH (e.g., the contention based RACH in a handover, the contention free RACH in a handover, another initial random access, etc. ) . The procedure can be similar to that describe in any one or more of the three immediately preceding paragraphs.

[0066] The conditions to determine whether capability of PUCCH repetition on the common PUCCH resources can be reported via higher layer signaling can be based at least one of the following (e.g., report the capability if / when any of the following condition is met) : (1) when the UE initiates initial random access, the initial random access can be contention-based CBRA or CFRA, (2) when repetition factors and the RSRP threshold are configured and the measured RSRP is lower than the configured RSRP threshold, (3) when the repetition factors are configured and the RSRP threshold is not configured, (4) when the UE initiates a handover which at least includes a handover based on contention-based RACH process, and / or (5) when the UE initiate handover which at least includes handover based on the contention-free RACH process.

[0067] A DCI can indicate / include an indicator of the repetition factor. Such a DCI can be the first DCI scrambled by the C-RNTI after a successful random access and the repetition factor (s) can be valid before the dedicated PUCCH resource configuration is provided. The first DCI (e.g., format 0_0 / 1 / 2, format 1_0 / 1 / 2, etc. ) can be a DCI for the scheduling of a DL transmission, or a DCI for the scheduling of UL transmission. The DCI can be a DCI scrambled by a C-RNTI after a successful random access procedure and before a / any dedicated PUCCH resource is configured. The DCI (e.g., format 0_0 / 1 / 2, format 1_0 / 1 / 2) can be the DCI for the scheduling of DL transmission. A DCI scrambled by a C-RNTI can be used by the UE to determine whether a random access procedure is successful while using C-RNTI to address the PDCCH transmission and the repetition factors can be valid before a dedicated PUCCH resource configuration is provided / performed / completed. The DCI scrambled by the RA-RNTI can be used for an indicator of the repetition factor and the repetition factors can be valid before the dedicated PUCCH resource configuration is provided.

[0068] The following are example scenarios illustrating features disclosed in the present disclosure.

[0069] When the UE has reported its capability of PUCCH repetition (e.g., reported in initial random access, reported in Msg3 in the handover based on contention based RACH, etc. ) , the gNB or base station (e.g., wireless  communication node) can configure the repetition factor for the PUCCH repetition on a common PUCCH resource for the UE in CONNECTED state via higher layer signaling (e.g., SIB, RRC, MAC CE, etc. ) such as by handover command, RRC reconfiguration, reconfiguration with sync, or other signaling, etc. Following the successful completion of the RACH procedure (e.g., during CFRA or CBRA handovers) and prior to the configuration of the dedicated PUCCH resources, the PUCCH transmission can support repetition on the common PUCCH resources and / or the UE can perform the PUCCH repetition on common PUCCH resource based on the repetition factor configured by higher layer signaling. If the UE has not reported its capability of PUCCH repetition previously, the UE cannot support PUCCH repetition on the common PUCCH resource.

[0070] When the UE has previously reported its capability for PUCCH repetition (e.g., during initial random access or as reported in Msg3 during a handover based on contention-based RACH) , if only one repetition factor is configured in the SIB signaling (e.g., SIB signaling of the target cell, SIB signaling for initial access, SIB signaling of the target cell, SIB signaling for initial access, SIB signaling of the target cell with UE in CONNECTED state, SIB signaling for UE in CONNECTED state) , the same repetition factor can be applied to PUCCH repetition on the common PUCCH resources for the UE in CONNECTED state. Following the successful completion of a RACH procedure (e.g., during CFRA or CBRA handovers) and prior to the configuration of dedicated PUCCH resources, the PUCCH can support repetition on common PUCCH resources. The UE can perform the PUCCH repetition on the common PUCCH resource based on the repetition factor configured by the SIB signaling (e.g., SIB signaling of the target cell, SIB signaling for initial access, SIB signaling of the target cell with the UE in CONNECTED state, SIB signaling for the UE in CONNECTED state) . If the UE has not reported the capability of PUCCH repetition previously, the UE cannot support PUCCH repetition on common PUCCH resource.

[0071] When the UE has previously reported its capability for PUCCH repetition (e.g., during initial random access or as reported in Msg3 during a handover based on contention-based RACH) , if multiple repetition factors are configured in the SIB signaling (e.g., SIB signaling of the target cell, SIB signaling for initial access, SIB signaling of the target cell with the UE in CONNECTED state, SIB signaling for UE in CONNECTED state) , the gNB / BS can configure the specific / exact repetition factor for the PUCCH repetition on common PUCCH resource for the UE in CONNECTED state via a specific value / state of 2-bits or one of 4 states indicated in the DCI (the DCI can be any DCI) . Following successful completion of a RACH procedure (e.g., during CFRA or CBRA handovers) and before the configuration of the dedicated PUCCH resources, the PUCCH can support repetition on the common PUCCH resource and the UE can perform the PUCCH repetition on the common PUCCH resource based on the repetition factor configured by the dynamic indication (e.g., repetition indication (e.g., MCS indicator functions as dynamic indication) in the target cell with UE in CONNECTED state, repetition indication for UE in CONNECTED state) . If the UE has not reported its capability of PUCCH repetition previously, the UE cannot support the PUCCH repetition on common PUCCH resource.

[0072] When the UE has previously reported its capability for PUCCH repetition (e.g., during initial random access or as reported in Msg3 during a handover based on contention-based RACH) , then the following can apply: the gNB / BS can configure a repetition factor for the PUCCH repetition on common PUCCH resource for the UE in CONNECTED state via higher layer signaling (e.g., SIB, RRC, MAC CE, etc. ) such as by handover  command, RRC reconfiguration, reconfiguration with sync, or other signaling, etc. Following the successful completion of the RACH procedure (e.g., during CFRA or CBRA handovers) and prior to the configuration of the dedicated PUCCH resources, the UE’s PUCCH transmission can support repetition on common PUCCH resources and [0074] When the UE has previously reported its capability for PUCCH repetition (e.g., during initial random access or as reported in Msg3 during a handover based on contention-based RACH) , then the following can apply: the gNB / BS can configure a repetition factor for the PUCCH repetition on common PUCCH resource via higher layer signaling (e.g., SIB, RRC, MAC CE, etc. ) such as by handover command, RRC reconfiguration, reconfiguration with sync, or other signaling, etc. Following the successful completion of the RACH procedure (e.g., during CFRA or CBRA handovers) and prior to the configuration of the dedicated PUCCH resources, the UE’s PUCCH transmission can support repetition on common PUCCH resources and / or the UE can perform the PUCCH repetition on the common PUCCH resource based on the repetition factor configured by the higher layer signaling. Or if only one repetition factor is configured in the SIB signaling (e.g., SIB signaling of the target cell, SIB signaling for initial access, or SIB signaling of the target cell with UE in CONNECTED state, SIB signaling for UE in CONNECTED state) , the same repetition factor can be applied to the PUCCH repetition on the common PUCCH resources. Following the successful completion of the RACH procedure (e.g., during CFRA or CBRA handovers) and prior to the configuration of the dedicated PUCCH resources, the PUCCH can support repetition on common PUCCH resources and / or the UE can perform the PUCCH repetition on the common PUCCH resource based on the repetition factor configured by the SIB signaling (e.g., SIB signaling of the target cell, SIB signaling for initial access, or SIB signaling in the target cell with UE in CONNECTED state, SIB signaling for UE in CONNECTED state) . or if multiple repetition factors are configured in the SIB signaling (e.g., SIB signaling of the target cell, SIB signaling for initial access, or SIB signaling of the target cell with UE in CONNECTED state, SIB signaling for UE in CONNECTED state) , the gNB can configure / specify / indicate the exact / specific repetition factor to use / apply for the PUCCH repetition on the common PUCCH resource via a value of 2-bit or a specific one of 4 states indicated in the DCI (the DCI can be any DCI) . Following the successful completion of RACH procedure (e.g., during CFRA or CBRA handovers) and before the configuration of dedicated (or UE-specific) PUCCH resources, the PUCCH transmission can support repetition on the common PUCCH resource and the UE can perform the PUCCH repetition on the common PUCCH resource based on the repetition factor configured by the dynamic indication (e.g., repetition indication (e.g., MCS indicator functions as dynamic indication) in the target cell with UE in CONNECTED state, repetition indication for UE in CONNECTED state) . If the UE has not reported its capability of PUCCH repetition previously, the UE cannot support the PUCCH repetition on common PUCCH resource.

[0075] If the UE initiates a handover that encompasses either a handover based on contention-based RACH or a handover based on contention-free RACH, or if the UE initiated handover, which can be based on  contention-based RACH or contention-free RACH, is accompanied by the configured repetition factors and an RSRP threshold, and / or if the measured RSRP is observed to be lower than this threshold, then the UE that is capable of PUCCH repetition can report its capability of PUCCH repetition in the higher layer signaling of Msg3, or if the UE initiated handover, which can be based on contention-based RACH or contention-free RACH, and the repetition factors and the RSRP threshold are not configured, then the UE that is capable of PUCCH repetition can report its capability of PUCCH repetition in the higher layer signaling of Msg3.

[0076] It should be understood that one or more features from the above / following implementation examples are not exclusive to the specific implementation examples, but can be combined in any manner (e.g., in any priority and / or order, concurrently or otherwise) .

[0077] FIG. 5 illustrates a flow diagram of a method 500 for communication between a wireless communication device and a wireless communication node. The method 500 may be implemented using any one or more of the components and devices detailed herein in conjunction with FIGs. 1–4. In overview, the method 500 may be performed by a wireless communication device (e.g., a UE) and / or a wireless communication node (e.g., BS, gNB) , in some embodiments. Additional, fewer, or different operations may be performed in the method 500 depending on the embodiment. At least one aspect of the operations is directed to a system, method, apparatus, or a computer-readable medium.

[0078] A wireless communication device (e.g., a user equipment (UE) ) can send a message 505 to a wireless communication node (e.g., base station (BS) ) indicating a capability of the wireless communication device for performing PUCCH repetition. The wireless communication node can receive a message 510 indicating a capability of the wireless communication device for performing PUCCH repetition. The wireless communication node may receive from the wireless communication device, the message indicating a capability of the wireless communication device for performing physical uplink control channel (PUCCH) repetition.

[0079] In some embodiments, the common PUCCH resource may comprise at least one of a common PUCCH resource in idle state (e.g., while the wireless communication device is in idle state) , a common PUCCH resource in connected state (e.g., while the wireless communication device is in connected or RRC-connected state) , a common PUCCH when no dedicated PUCCH resource has been configured, a common PUCCH resource after successful completion of a contention based random access procedure and prior to configuration of a dedicated PUCCH resource, or a common PUCCH resource after successful completion of a contention free random access procedure and prior to configuration of a dedicated PUCCH resource.

[0080] The wireless communication device may receive from the wireless communication node an indication of a repetition factor of the PUCCH repetition. The wireless communication device may perform the PUCCH repetition using the repetition factor. The indication may be configured via / using a higher layer signaling transmitted by the wireless communication node. The indication, for a single repetition factor to be used on the PUCCH repetition, may be configured via a first system information block (SIB) signaling. The indication may identify the repetition factor from a plurality of repetition factors configured via a second SIB signaling. The indication may be configured via a field of a downlink control information (DCI) signaling. The indication may be configured via at least one bit (e.g., two bits, or more) of cyclic redundancy check (CRC) bits for scrambling a DCI signaling for scheduling a Msg4 physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH) transmission.  The indication may be configured via a field of a DCI signaling to schedule a Msg3 physical uplink shared channel (PUSCH) transmission. The indication may be (determined) based on a repetition factor (configured) for a Msg3 transmission.

[0081] In some implementations, the indication to identify the repetition factor from the plurality of repetition factors configured via the second SIB signaling may comprise one of four values that is indicated in two bits comprising two most significant bits (MSBs) , least significant bits (LSBs) or other bits, of a modulation and coding scheme (MCS) field of a DCI signaling. The indication may comprise one of four values that is indicated in two bits of a reserved field of the DCI signaling, one of four states that is indicated in a PUCCH resource indicator field of the DCI signaling, or one of four states that is indicated in hybrid automatic request (HARQ) process number field of the DCI signaling. The indication may comprise one of four states that is indicated in a physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH) to-HARQ feedback timing indicator field of the DCI signaling. Each value of the two bits may be mapped to a corresponding repetition factor. Each state of the four states may be mapped to a corresponding repetition factor. The wireless communication device may receive the DCI signaling from the wireless communication node.

[0082] In certain implementations, the wireless communication device may determine the repetition factor according to at least one bit of CRC bits. The at least one bit of CRC bits may comprise two of the CRC bits other than those scrambled by a cell radio network temporary identifier (C-RNTI) or a temporary C-RNTI; or two most significant bits (MSBs) of the CRC bits scrambled with information corresponding to the repetition factor. The wireless communication device may determine the repetition factor according to a defined relationship with the repetition factor (configured) for the Msg3 transmission, for example as a defined fraction / multiple / function of the repetition factor for the Msg3 transmission, or as being same as the repetition factor for the Msg3 transmission.

[0083] In some embodiments, the DCI signaling discussed above may comprise: a first DCI signaling that may be scrambled by a cell radio network temporary identifier (C-RNTI) after successfully completing a random access procedure; a DCI signaling that may be scrambled by a C-RNTI after successfully completing a random access procedure, and that may be prior to configuration of a dedicated PUCCH resource; a DCI signaling that may be scrambled by a C-RNTI and used by the wireless communication device to determine whether a random access procedure may be successfully completed when using a C-RNTI to address a PDCCH transmission; or a DCI signaling that may be scrambled by a random access (RA) RNTI, that may be prior to configuration of a dedicated PUCCH resource.

[0084] In certain embodiments, the repetition factor may be configured via the DCI signaling or higher layer signaling and may be valid before a dedicated PUCCH resource is configured. The wireless communication device may determine to send the message indicating the capability of the wireless communication device for performing PUCCH repetition using at least one common PUCCH resource, responsive to certain condition (s) being satisfied (e.g., responsive to the occurrence of certain scenarios) . The conditions / scenarios may comprise at least one of: when the wireless communication device initiates initial random access that is contention-based random access or contention-free random access, when one or more repetition factors and a reference signal received power (RSRP) threshold are configured, and the RSRP is  measured to be lower than the configured RSRP threshold, when one or more repetition factors are configured, and the RSRP threshold is not configured, when the wireless communication device initiates / performs handover which at least includes handover based on a contention based random access procedure, or when the wireless communication device initiates / performs handover which at least includes handover based on a contention free random access procedure.

[0085] While various embodiments of the present solution have been described above, it should be understood that they have been presented by way of example only, and not by way of limitation. Likewise, the various diagrams may depict an example architectural or configuration, which are provided to enable persons of ordinary skill in the art to understand example features and functions of the present solution. Such persons would understand, however, that the solution is not restricted to the illustrated example architectures or configurations, but can be implemented using a variety of alternative architectures and configurations. Additionally, as would be understood by persons of ordinary skill in the art, one or more features of one embodiment can be combined with one or more features of another embodiment described herein. Thus, the breadth and scope of the present disclosure should not be limited by any of the above-described illustrative embodiments.

[0086] It is also understood that any reference to an element herein using a designation such as "first, " "second, " and so forth does not generally limit the quantity or order of those elements. Rather, these designations can be used herein as a convenient means of distinguishing between two or more elements or instances of an element. Thus, a reference to first and second elements does not mean that only two elements can be employed, or that the first element must precede the second element in some manner.

[0087] Additionally, a person having ordinary skill in the art would understand that information and signals can be represented using any of a variety of different technologies and techniques. For example, data, instructions, commands, information, signals, bits and symbols, for example, which may be referenced in the above description can be represented by voltages, currents, electromagnetic waves, magnetic fields or particles, optical fields or particles, or any combination thereof.

[0088] A person of ordinary skill in the art would further appreciate that any of the various illustrative logical blocks, modules, processors, means, circuits, methods and functions described in connection with the aspects disclosed herein can be implemented by electronic hardware (e.g., a digital implementation, an analog implementation, or a combination of the two) , firmware, various forms of program or design code incorporating instructions (which can be referred to herein, for convenience, as "software" or a "software module) , or any combination of these techniques. To clearly illustrate this interchangeability of hardware, firmware and software, various illustrative components, blocks, modules, circuits, and steps have been described above generally in terms of their functionality. Whether such functionality is implemented as hardware, firmware or software, or a combination of these techniques, depends upon the particular application and design constraints imposed on the overall system. Skilled artisans can implement the described functionality in various ways for each particular application, but such implementation decisions do not cause a departure from the scope of the present disclosure.

[0089] Furthermore, a person of ordinary skill in the art would understand that various illustrative logical blocks, modules, devices, components and circuits described herein can be implemented within or performed by  an integrated circuit (IC) that can include a general purpose processor, a digital signal processor (DSP) , an application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) , a field programmable gate array (FPGA) or other programmable logic device, or any combination thereof. The logical blocks, modules, and circuits can further include antennas and / or transceivers to communicate with various components within the network or within the device. A general purpose processor can be a microprocessor, but in the alternative, the processor can be any conventional processor, controller, or state machine. A processor can also be implemented as a combination of computing devices, e.g., a combination of a DSP and a microprocessor, a plurality of microprocessors, one or more microprocessors in conjunction with a DSP core, or any other suitable configuration to perform the functions described herein.

[0090] If implemented in software, the functions can be stored as one or more instructions or code on a computer-readable medium. Thus, the steps of a method or algorithm disclosed herein can be implemented as software stored on a computer-readable medium. Computer-readable media includes both computer storage media and communication media including any medium that can be enabled to transfer a computer program or code from one place to another. A storage media can be any available media that can be accessed by a computer. By way of example, and not limitation, such computer-readable media can include RAM, ROM, EEPROM, CD-ROM or other optical disk storage, magnetic disk storage or other magnetic storage devices, or any other medium that can be used to store desired program code in the form of instructions or data structures and that can be accessed by a computer.

[0091] In this document, the term "module" as used herein, refers to software, firmware, hardware, and any combination of these elements for performing the associated functions described herein. Additionally, for purpose of discussion, the various modules are described as discrete modules; however, as would be apparent to one of ordinary skill in the art, two or more modules may be combined to form a single module that performs the associated functions according to embodiments of the present solution.

[0092] Additionally, memory or other storage, as well as communication components, may be employed in embodiments of the present solution. It will be appreciated that, for clarity purposes, the above description has described embodiments of the present solution with reference to different functional units and processors. However, it will be apparent that any suitable distribution of functionality between different functional units, processing logic elements or domains may be used without detracting from the present solution. For example, functionality illustrated to be performed by separate processing logic elements, or controllers, may be performed by the same processing logic element, or controller. Hence, references to specific functional units are only references to a suitable means for providing the described functionality, rather than indicative of a strict logical or physical structure or organization.

[0093] Various modifications to the embodiments described in this disclosure will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art, and the general principles defined herein can be applied to other embodiments without departing from the scope of this disclosure. Thus, the disclosure is not intended to be limited to the embodiments shown herein, but is to be accorded the widest scope consistent with the novel features and principles disclosed herein, as recited in the claims below.
