Description

[0001] LESS-LETHAL PROJECTILES AND CARTRIDGES AND METHODS OF USE AND MANUFACTURE OF THE SAME

[0002] BACKGROUND

[0003] Less-lethal ammunition is often intended to provide a level of physical persuasion less than what is commonly thought of as the lethal force of a firearm. Less-lethal ammunition often relies upon electrical means to deter or incapacitate an individual, such as in US Patent No. 5,786,546 to Simson and in US Patent No. 6,636,412 to Smith. Other less-lethal ammunition relies upon transferring kinetic energy to a person, such as in US10408586 to DeAngelis. Modern electrically-based less-lethal ammunition is, unfortunately, not nearly as reliable as standard firearm ammunition, and modem kinetic less-lethal ammunition is only available to be fired from inconvenient launchers and firearms.

[0004] FIELD OF THE INVENTION

[0005] The invention described herein relates, in general, to projectiles and less-lethal projectiles and cartridges thereof.

[0006] SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0007] Briefly, and in non-limiting terms, described herein are less-lethal projectiles and cartridges intended to deter, incapacitate, damage, or disable a person, an animal, or a vehicle Also described are methods of manufacture and use of the same projectiles and cartridges.

It should be understood that other embodiments may be realized and that various changes to the invention may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the present invention. The detailed description of the embodiments of the present invention is not intended to limit the scope of the invention. The detailed description is presented to describe the features and characteristics of the present invention, to set forth the best mode of operation of the invention, and to sufficiently enable one skilled in the art to practice the invention. The scope of the present invention is to be defined only by the appended claims.

[0028] In the following description, for purposes of explanation, numerous specific details of certain embodiments are set forth. Reference in the specification to “an example”, “an embodiment”, or similar language means that a particular feature, structure, or characteristic described in connection with the example is included in at least that one embodiment, but not necessarily in other embodiments.

[0029] Within this specification, the singular forms "a," "an," and "the" include plural referents unless the context clearly dictates otherwise. Thus, for example, reference to "a polymer" includes one or more of such materials, and reference to "heating" includes reference to one or more of such steps. Herein, when reference is made to “chain” and / or “string”, this is understood to indicate at least one chain and / or at least one string.

[0030] As used herein, a plurality of items, structural elements, compositional elements, and / or materials may be presented in a common list for convenience. However, these lists should be construed as though each member of the list is individually identified as a separate and unique member. Thus, no individual member of such lists should be construed as a de facto equivalent of any other member of the same list solely based on their presentation in a common group without indications to the contrary.

[0031] As used herein, numerical values used in combination with “about” will be understood to indicate all numerical values 20 % above the numerical value to 20 % below the value. For example, “a diameter of about 3 mm” will be understood to indicate diameter of 2.4 to 3.6 mm, inclusive of all values within that range.

[0032] Concentrations, amounts, and other numerical data may be presented herein in a range format. It is to be understood that such a range format is used merely for convenience and brevity and should be interpreted flexibly to include not only the numerical values explicitly recited as the limits of the range, but also to include all the individual numerical values or sub-ranges encompassed within that range as if each numerical value and sub-range is explicitly recited. For example, a numerical range of 1 to 4.5 should be interpreted to include not only the explicitly recited limits of 1 to 4.5, but also to include individual numerals such as 2, 3, 4, and sub-ranges such as 1 to 3, 2 to 4, etc. The same principle applies to ranges reciting only one numerical value, such as "less than 4.5". Further, such an interpretation should apply regardless of the breadth of the range or the characteristic being described.
