Description

Phase change material compositionTechnical Field

[0001] The invention relates generally to a phase change material and, more particularly, to a phase change material composition based on a reaction mixture of isocyanates and selected compounds which contain groups reactive towards isocyanate groups.Background art

[0002] A phase change material (PCM) is a new type of smart material used widely in all kinds of applications, including thermal management material for construction, healthcare, electronics and battery. PCM can store the energy as latent heat when its temperature increases above the phase change temperature (Tc) by melting or changing molecular arrangement. It also can release the heat when the temperature cools down below Tc by molecular crystalline. This reversible physical property of PCM can be used for preventing overheat of certain device or parts, or to keep stable temperature without excessive fluctuate out of control.

[0003] But most phase change materials shift between liquid state and solid state when working above and below Tc.The liquid material cannot keep certain shape or strength, cannot be easily utilized in fabrication of electronic device and battery units. Thus, it is very necessary to develop a new kind of material which owns phase change function and keeps solid state above Tc. By now, there are some types of materials in the market, including microcapsules powder, PEO based polymer and polymer gel.

[0004] CN 102977857 B develops a new type of phase change energy storage microcapsules with core-shell structure, and the many kinds of polymers including polyurethane can be used for shell layer, and the phase change material like paraffin wax is the core part. But the microcapsule method usually uses very complicated process to prepare emulsion or suspension intermediate, which really limits the material selection. And the product form of microcapsule usually is a kind of powder or emulsion, the powder type material may have compatibility with formulation of the end application, and increase viscosity. So the formulation of microcapsule type material cannot be added with high content of PCM, this limits the latent heat capacity of the formulated system for end application. And the microcapsules may also have caking problem during storage, so it is high cost and not easy to use.

[0005] Polyurethane resin also can be introduced with reactive phase change material like polyethylene oxide glycol, to synthesize many types of phase change polyurethane resin. WO 2007 / 033760A1 claims a kind of polyurethane with phase change function. But the PEO polyol is very hydrophilic, the synthesized polyurethane has problem for water resistance, and may absorb water or moisture during storage and application. And due to the need to mix isocyanate and PEO by stoichiometric ratio, the content dependency of PEO on its molecular weight, this limits the content of effective latent heat capacity of finished PU resin  material, and the content cannot be flexibly adjusted as needed. Moreover, the Tc is also affected and drifted from unreacted PEO, and the Tc of finished polyurethane resin also cannot be adjusted flexibly. JP 2014189779A also introduces a kind of polyurethane with paraffin wax as phase change material, but it needs a special kind of polyester polyol based on succinic anhydride or succinic acid having an alkenyl group, it shows that alkyl substituted group can significantly improve the compatibility of paraffin wax with PU resin, but it needs to synthesize special kind of polyester polyol, this limits its feasibility and increases the cost.

[0006] Therefore, an object of the present invention is to provide phase change material composition which has high loading of PCM to keep maximum latent heat capacity, and whose polymer resin has good compatibility with PCM. At the same time, it should be possible to be easy to process and be flexible to adjust to meet specific requirements of end application like foam, adhesive, sealant or elastomers.

[0007] Surprisingly, a novel phase change material composition has been found which does not exhibit the disadvantages described above and which achieves the object with outstanding results.Summary of the invention

[0024] Phase change material composition

[0025] In the present invention, the phase change material composition comprises a reaction product having at least one phase change material homogeneously mixed therein. Preferably, the phase change material composition consists of a reaction product having at least one phase change material homogeneously mixed therein. The reaction product is obtained from a reaction mixture comprising one or more isocyanates, one or more fatty compounds containing at least one alkyl group and at least one hydroxyl, primary amino or secondary amino group, and optionally at least one di-alcohol or polyol, and optionally at least one diamine or polyamine. The composition can take-in or release heat by change of its molecular phase between crystalline and non-crystalline, to realize solid to solid “phase change” without liquidize. So its shape can be stable without flow and leakage. Therefore, there is no obvious solid –liquid change, only hard-soft change, which is innovative, when the temperature is raised above Tc. As shown in the Example portion, the molecular phase between crystalline and non-crystalline of the phase change material composition can be detected by DSC as latent heat, and its hardness also changes.

[0026] Phase change material (PCM)

[0027] The term “phase change material” or “PCM” , when used herein, may refer to substances with a high heat of fusion, undergo a phase change at a certain temperature, and are capable of storing and releasing large amounts of energy. The phase change may be, but not limited to, melting and solidifying. In the present invention, solid to solid “phase change” without liquidize is realized by molecular rearrangement between crystalline and non-crystalline.

[0028] The PCM applicable in the invention includes organic PCM. Examples of PCM useful in the present invention include paraffin wax, polyolefin, fatty acid, fatty alcohols, fatty esters and polyethylene oxide glycol. These may be used alone or in combination of two or more. The target range of phase change temperature can be easily adjusted by selecting suitable PCM. The phase change temperature can be adjusted from 0-150 ℃ by selecting proper phase change material.

[0029] In the phase change material composition, the content of the PCM represents preferably 50-90 %by mass, and more preferably 70-90 %by mass in the total weight of the phase change material composition. Therefore, the latent heat capacity of the phase change material composition can be maximized.

[0074] These catalysts can be used alone or in combination of two or more.

[0075] Process

[0076] In principle, the phase change material composition can be produced in a variety of ways including, for example, by the one-shot process or the two-component premix process. In the one-shot process, all the components, i.e. isocyanates, fatty compounds, PCM, optionally the di-alcohol or polyol and / or the diamine or polyamine and optionally catalysts, are brought together at the same time and are intimately mixed with one another. In the two-component premix process, the first step is to prepare the homogeneous mixture comprising fatty compounds, PCM, optionally the di-alcohol or polyol and / or the diamine or polyamine and optionally catalysts (Part A) . The second step is to prepare the homogeneous mixture of isocyanates and PCM (Part B) , after which the resulting mixture from the second step is incorporated into the resulting mixture from the first step and the ingredients are intimately mixed and cured. Here the first step and the second step are interchangeable. The mixing ratio of part A and part B can be flexibly adjusted according to the end application. The two-component premix process is particularly preferred in terms of the present invention. The curing speed and mixing viscosity can be flexibly adjusted as required by the end application. Here the catalysts which are optionally to be used concomitantly are generally added to the part of components reactive towards the isocyanate, but this is not absolutely necessary since catalysts which are compatible with the isocyanate part can also be incorporated into said isocyanate part.

[0077] The curing condition can be flexibly adjusted according to requirement of end application, usually the mixture of the two parts can be fully cured in a wide range of temperature from 0 ℃ to 200 ℃, and the curing speed and pot life of the mixed components also can be widely adjusted by adjusting catalyst dosage or setting different curing temperature. But it is recommended to complete the curing at temperature above the Tc of PCM, which is easier for process handling and fast curing.

[0078] The present invention therefore also relates to the process for producing a phase change material composition, the process comprising: reacting in a intimately mixed reaction mixture, having at least one phase change material homogeneously mixed therein, which reaction mixture comprises: one or more  isocyanates, one or more fatty compounds containing at least one alkyl group and at least one hydroxyl primary amino or secondary amino group, and optionally at least one di-alcohol or polyol and optionally at least one diamine or polyamine.

[0079] Preferably, the process comprises the steps of:

[0080] (1) producing a homogeneous mixture comprising

[0081] at least one vinyl polymer comprising monomer units derived from ethylenically unsaturated monomer having at least one hydroxyl, primary amino or secondary amino group and monomer units derived from ethylenically unsaturated monomer having at least one alkyl group;

[0082] optionally at least one di-alcohol or polyol and / or at least one diamine or polyamine;

[0083] optionally at least one catalyst; and

[0084] phase change material;

[0085] (2) producing a homogeneous mixture comprising

[0086] at least one isocyanate; and

[0087] phase change material;

[0088] (3) mixing the mixture of (1) with the mixture of (2) , wherein (1) and (2) are interchangeable in sequence.

[0089] The present invention also relates to the use of the phase change material composition as described above for the production of battery unit, circuit board, human body proximity products, such as cushions and mattresses.
