Description

METHODS AND APPARATUS OF MODEL BASED RRM MEASUREMENT FOR WIRELESS COMMUNICATION SYSTEMCROSS REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS

[0001] This application is filed under 35 U.S.C. §111 (a) and is based on and hereby claims priority under 35 U.S.C. §120 and §365 (c) from International Application No. PCT / CN2023 / 142377, titled “Method and apparatus of AI / ML based RRM measurement for wireless communication systems, ” filed on Dec. 27, 2023. The disclosure of each of the foregoing documents is incorporated herein by reference.TECHNICAL FIELD

[0002] The disclosed embodiments relate generally to wireless communication, and, more particularly, to model based RRM measurement.BACKGROUND

[0003] With the rapid development in wireless communication, the more efficient procedures are required, such as radio resource management (RRM) measurements, positioning, and mobility procedures in 5G and future 6G. In the conventional network of the 3rd generation partnership project (3GPP) 5G new radio (NR) , considering UE mobility, the UE keeps measures and reports radio resource signal environment quality to maintain service continuity and quality. Legacy handover (HO) design controlled by a series of L3 procedures including the RRM measurement and the radio resource control (RRC) reconfiguration, which involve sizable signaling and latency. Conditional handover is introduced to reduces signaling overhead by allowing the UE to make a handover decision based on predefined conditions, leading to a faster HO. Dual Active Protocol Stack (DAPS) aims to minimize interruption by maintaining two active protocol stacks, allowing the UE to communicate with both the source and target cells simultaneously during the handover process. To further reduce the latency, overhead, and interruption time during UE mobility, the mobility mechanism L1 / L2 based inter-cell mobility (LTM, L1 / L2-triggered Mobility) is enhanced to enable a serving cell to change via beam management with L1 / L2 signaling. However, with the increasing capacity and efficiency requirement, the traditional ways of measurement procedures cannot catch up with the exponential increase of the mobile network.

[0004] Apparatus and mechanisms are sought to perform model based RRM measurements for wireless communication systems.SUMMARY

[0005] Apparatus and methods are provided for RRM measurement prediction. In one novel aspect, the UE performs measurements on a first set of reference signals for a first set of cells and predicts on a second set of references for a second set of cells. In one embodiment, the predicting is on the temporal domain using one or more historical measurement results as model input and one or more future measurement results as label, on the frequency domain using one or more measurement results of a first subset of bandwidth part (BWP) as model input and measurement results of a full BWP or a second subset of BWP as label, on the spatial domain using one or more measurement results of a first set of partial beams as input and measurement results of a full set of beams or a second set of partial beams as label, or on a combination of domains including a combination of the temporal domain and the spatial domain, a combination of the temporal domain and the frequency domain, a combination of the spatial domain and the frequency domain, or a combination of the temporal domain, the spatial domain, and the frequency domain. In one embodiment, the one or more first measurement results are a set of layer-1 (L1) measurement results obtained by the UE performing L1 filtering on corresponding measurement results of the first set of reference signals. In one embodiment, the predicted result is an L1 cell quality on the second set of cells, a layer-3 (L3) cell quality on the second set of cells, or L3 measurement results on the second set of reference signals. In one embodiment, the one or more first measurement results are a set of L3 measurement results obtained by the UE performing L3 filtering on corresponding measurement results of the first set of reference signals, and wherein the one or more predicted result is L3 measurement results on the second set of reference signals.

[0018] Several aspects of telecommunication systems will now be presented with reference to various apparatus and methods. These apparatus and methods will be described in the following detailed description and illustrated in the accompanying drawings by various blocks, components, circuits, processes, algorithms, etc. (Collectively referred to as “elements” ) . These elements may be implemented using electronic hardware, computer software, or any combination thereof. Whether such elements are implemented as hardware or software depends upon the particular application and design constraints imposed on the overall system.

[0019] Figure 1 is a schematic system diagram illustrating an exemplary wireless network that supports AI-ML model-based RRM measurement in accordance with embodiments of the current invention. Wireless communication network 100 includes one or more fixed base infrastructure units forming a network distributed over a geographical region. The base unit may also be referred to as an access point, an access terminal, a base station, a Node-B, an eNode-B (eNB) , a gNB, or by other terminology used in the art. As an example, base stations serve a number of mobile stations within a serving area, for example, a cell, or within a cell sector. In some systems, one or more base stations are coupled to a controller forming an access network that is coupled to one or more core networks. gNB 102, gNB 107 and gNB 108 are base stations in the wireless network, the serving area of which may or may not overlap with each other. gNB 102 is connected with gNB 107 via Xn interface 121. gNB 102 is connected with gNB 108 via Xn interface 122. gNB 107 is connected with gNB 108 via Xn interface 123. Core network (CN) entity 103 connects with gNB 102 and 107, through NG interface 125 and 126, respectively. Network entity CN 103 connects with gNB 108 via NG connection 127. CN 103 includes core components such as user plane function (UPF) and access and mobility management function (AMF) . UE 101 is AI-ML enabled. As an example, UE 101 is connected with gNB 102 through link 111. UE 101 also may establish mobility link with neighbouring gNB 108 through link 112.

[0020] Figure 1 further illustrates simplified interaction flow for UE 101 and gNBs 102 and 108. The latest Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) are increasingly being integrated into wireless networks to enhance performance, elevate user experience, and diminish complexity and overhead. For example, AI-ML technologies have been harnessed to forecast the top-K beams, either in the time or spatial domain, which aids in curtailing the measurement overhead. As mobility increases, that is, the UE moves faster / more frequently or cells with higher density, the measurement overhead and power consumption will also increase accordingly. Using AI / ML predictive measurements to reduce unnecessary measurements, while providing proactive measurements for HO. As an example, at step 181, gNB 102 or 108 provides measurement configuration to UE 101 by RRC configuration signaling. The gNB can request UE 101 to perform intra-frequency, inter-frequency measurements. At step 182, UE 101 performs measurements and evaluates the criteria for measurement report based on the measurements. At step 183, the AI-ML model is used to predict the actual measurements results. In one embodiment, the AI-ML model is at UE side. At step 184, UE 101 performs measurement prediction and reports the model output to gNB. Subsequently, the gNB makes handover decision and sends handover command to UE 101.

[0021] Figure 1 further illustrates simplified block diagrams of a RAN node  / base station, and a mobile device / UE that supports AI-ML model-based RRM measurement. The gNB  / RAN node has an antenna 156, which transmits and receives radio signals. An RF transceiver circuit 153, coupled with the antenna 156, receives RF signals from antenna 156, converts them to baseband signals, and sends them to processor 152. RF transceiver 153 also converts received baseband signals from processor 152, converts them to RF signals, and sends out to antenna 156. Processor 152 processes the received baseband signals and invokes different functional modules to perform features in gNB. Memory 151 stores program instructions and data 155 to control the operations of the base station / gNB. The base station  / gNB also includes a set of control modules 157 that carry out functional tasks to communicate with mobile stations. These control modules can be implemented by circuits, software, firmware, or a combination of them.

[0022] Figure 1 also includes simplified block diagrams of a UE, such as UE 101. The UE may also be referred to as a mobile station, a mobile terminal, a mobile phone, a smart phone, a wearable device, an IoT device, a tablet, a laptop, or other terminology used in the art. The UE performs functions such as AI-ML model-based RRM measurement. UE interacts with gNB through the air interface. The UE has an antenna 166, which transmits and receives radio signals. An RF transceiver circuit 163, coupled with the antenna, receives RF signals from antenna 166, converts them to baseband signals, and sends them to processor 162. RF transceiver 163 also converts received baseband signals from processor 162, converts them to RF signals, and sends out to antenna 166. Processor 162 processes the received baseband signals and invokes different functional modules to perform features in UE 101. Memory 161 stores program instructions and data 165 to control the operations of UE 101. Antenna 166 sends uplink transmission and receives downlink transmissions to / from antenna 156 of the base station  / gNB.

[0023] The UE also includes a set of control modules that carry out functional tasks. These control modules can be implemented by circuits, software, firmware, or a combination of them. A measurement module 191 performs a first measurement on a first set of reference signals (RSs) for a first set of cells. A prediction module 192 predicts a predicted result on a second set of RSs for a second set of cells based on a first measurement result of the first measurement using one or more AI-ML models, wherein the predicting is performed on one or a combination of multiple RS radio resource domains comprising a spatial domain, a temporal domain, and a frequency domain. A filtering module 193 determines, based on the predicted result, one or more cell qualities of the first set of cells, the second set of cells, or both the first and the second set of cells. A reporting module 194 triggers one or more measurement reports based on one or more reporting criteria, wherein at least one of the one or more reporting criteria considers the first measurement result, the predicted result, or the first measurement and the predicted result, and wherein at least one or the one or more measurement reports includes the first measurement result, the predicted result, or the first measurement and the predicted result.

[0024] Figure 2 illustrates exemplary diagrams for the AI-ML based RRM radio resource of reference signal defined by spatial, temporal, frequency domain and any combinations of the domains in accordance with embodiments of the current invention. In one embodiment 200, the UE performs AI-ML model training. At step 250, the UE measures the first set of reference signals for a first set of cells and obtains the first measurement result 251. At step 260, the UE measures the second set of reference signals for a second set of cells at training stage and obtains the second measurement result 261. In one embodiment, UE performs model training using the measurement results 251 of the first set of reference signals for the first set of cells as model input and using the measurement results 261 of the second set of reference signals for the second set of cells as label. The UE generates or updates AI-ML model 270 with the model input 271 and label 272. The UE may have one or more AI-ML models.
