[0061] The following detailed description describes embodiments of back braces and methods, some of which are illustrated in the figures. These embodiments are not intended to be limiting, and various modifications, variations, combinations, etc., of the features of these embodiments are possible and within the scope of this disclosure.

[0062] In some embodiments, the back braces described herein provide stabilization, support, bracing, and / or pain relief for the back. The back braces may include a frame with adjustable support pads, or ears. Conditions that the back braces can help may include, but are not limited to, prolapsed or herniated discs (for example stage 3: extrusion and stage 4: sequestration), osteoarthritis, spondylolisthesis, vertebral fractures (for example of stable vertebral fractures the lumbar tract), muscle sprains, lumbar spinal cord spinal stenosis, and / or pain / discomfort in the back. In some embodiments, the operating principles of the frame for this back brace may include providing pressure and / or stability to an affected area of the back. The devices described herein can be used to bridge the orthosis to relieve the lumbar spine.

[0063] In some embodiments, the frame may be coupled to a flexible textile substrate for the back bracing system. The frame may include two bars, an upper and lower body, and support pads that can be adjusted on the upper and lower bodies. The flexible textile substrate may have one or more elastic members which may extend through one or more openings of the massage pad to securely fix the frame to the flexible textile substrate.

[0064] In some embodiments, the frame disclosed herein may be configured to be patient specific. The frame may provide additional stability to the back or spinal column of the patient. Additionally, the flexible textile substrate and the frame can come in multiple sizes to fit patients or users of various heights. In some embodiments, due to the flexible textile material, the back bracing system can be comfortably placed over the clothes of a wearer, even if the wearer is not in athletic clothing. The flexible textile material can, in some embodiments, provide compression and reinforce the support / bracing systems of the components to improve spinal function and relieve pain of the wearer.

[0065] In some embodiments, the back braces described herein provide stabilization, support, bracing, and / or pain relief for the back. The back braces may include a semi-rigid or flexible shell composed of a polymeric material (e.g., polyethylene) which maybe used to provide support to patients suffering from various back conditions. Such conditions may include, but are not limited to, flexion orthosis to relieve the lumbar spine with a mobilization function, de-lordosis, trunk pre-tilt, pelvic re-tilt, prolapsed or herniated discs (stage 3: extrusion; stage 4: sequestration), osteoarthritis, spondylolisthesis, vertebral fractures, muscle sprains, and / or lumbar spinal cord spinal stenosis. The back brace may also assist with improving the range of motion of the back. Additionally, in some embodiments, the operating principles of the semi-rigid or flexible shell for this back brace may include applying load or forces to an unaffected portion of the back or spine to shift load from an affected or injured portion of the back or spine.

[0066] In some embodiments, the semi-rigid or flexible shell may be coupled to a flexible textile substrate for the back bracing system. The flexible textile substrate may have one or more elastic members which may extend through one or more openings of the flexible shell to securely fix the semi-rigid or flexible shell to the flexible textile substrate. Additionally, the semi-rigid shell may include a main body (e.g., central body) which may be configured to support the lower back of a patient. For example, the central body may have a generally curvilinear profile along a topmost edge and bottommost edge to help conform to the curvature of the back of a patient. The central body may be capable of relieving pressure on the spine which may reduce the amount of strength needed by the surrounding muscles to support the spinal column. Another advantage of the central body is that it may provide additional spinal stability. Having the central body stabilize and reduce micro-motions of the patient’s back or spine can reduce pain (e.g., nerve root irritation and radicular pain) and allow injuries to heal.

[0067] In some embodiments, the semi-rigid or flexible shells of the back bracing systems disclosed herein may be configured to be patient specific. The semi-rigid or flexible shell can have one or more (e.g., two) lateral components which may extend from the central body of the semi-rigid or flexible shell. The one or more lateral components may also be semirigid or flexible and may provide additional stability to the back or spinal column of the patient. The one or more lateral components may be able to translate in a horizontal direction to fit various waist sizes of the patient or user. The one or more lateral components surround a leftmost side and a rightmost side of the lower back of the user. For example, the translating lateral components may be capable of fitting around a patient having a waist circumferenceranging from approximately 65 cm to approximately 145 cm. Additionally, the flexible textile substrate and the semi-rigid and / or flexible shells can come in multiple sizes to fit patients or users of various heights. The translating lateral components may be capable of fitting around a patient having a waist circumference ranging from approximately 75 cm to 105 cm in a smaller version of the back bracing system. The translating lateral components may be capable of fitting around a patient having a waist circumference ranging from approximately 105 cm to 135 cm in a larger version of the back bracing system.

[0068] Embodiments of back braces are described herein. The following is a list of certain components that are described and enumerated in this disclosure in reference to the above-listed figures. Other components, or aspects of these components, may not be included in the list but are disclosed in the figures and description. Accordingly, any aspect illustrated in the figures, whether or not called out separately herein, can form a portion of various embodiments and may provide basis for claim limitation relating to such aspects, with or without additional description. The enumerated components include:

[0069] FIG. 1A illustrates a back view of an embodiment of a frame 100 with adjustable support pads 102. FIG. IB illustrates a front view of an embodiment of the frame 100 of FIG. 1 A. FIG. 1C illustrates a top view of an embodiment of the frame 100 of FIG. 1A. FIG. ID illustrates a side view of an embodiment of the frame 100 of FIG. 1A.

[0070] The frame 100 can be a back support frame, or a frame for use with a back brace. The frame 100 can be placed on an inner side of a back brace as described in Figure 7. The frame 100 can support the back of a patient with a prolapsed or herniated disc, disc extrusion or sequestration, spondylolisthesis, vertebral fractures of the lumbar tract, andlumbar spinal canal stenosis. The frame 100 can provide support and stability to the back of the patient, as well as align the back to help alleviate pain and / or provide therapy to the spine.

[0071] The frame 100 can include a plurality of bars, for example, two bars 104. In some embodiments, the frame can include one bar, or 3-10 bars. The bars 104 are arranged such that when the back brace is worn by a user, the bars 104 are oriented vertically as depicted in FIG. 1 A. In this orientation, the bars 104, and / or the frame 100, may be referred to as having a top 120 (or top portion 120) and a bottom 122 (or bottom portion 122). In some embodiments, the bars 104 can comprise metal (for example aluminum), a composite material, and / or plastic. The bars 104 can have a slot (or aperture) 110 in the bars. The slot 110 can allow positioning of an elastic band between the bars 104, as described in reference to Figures 3 A and 3B.

[0072] The bars 104 can be coupled to an upper body 106 at the top 120 of the frame 100 and coupled to a lower body 108 at the bottom 122 of the frame 100. In some embodiments, the bars 104 can be coupled to the upper body 106 and lower body 108 by one or more fasteners 116, for example, a screw, rivet, or bolt, or another type of fastener 116. In some embodiments, the bars 104 can be integral with a portion of the upper body 106 and / or lower body 108 such that a fastener is not needed. The upper body 106 and lower body 108 can be configured in the shape of a substantially flat rectangle with round corners. At or near a center portion 117 of the upper body 106 and lower body 108, the upper body 106 and the lower body 108 can include a curved portion 118 that curves outward, or in a distal direction, such that the center portion 117 extends away from the user when the Flexible textile substrate 740 (Figure 7) is worn by a user / patient. The curved portion 118 can follow the spine curve to avoid any pressure on the spine. The upper body 106 and lower body 108 can be shaped to contour with the back of a user to improve the fit of the frame 100 against the user. For example, the curved portions 118 can be shaped to contour with an area near the spine. The upper body 106 and lower body 108 can be rigid or semi-rigid such that they have a stiffness needed to support the back of the user. In some embodiments, the upper body 106 and lower body 108 can comprise metal, plastic, a composite material, and / or another material.

[0073] The upper body 106 and lower body 108 can include attachment mechanisms 112. The attachment mechanisms 112 include a series of slots defined by vertical beams 112b and horizontal beams 112a, arranged such that the vertical beams 112b and horizontal beams 112a have spaces therebetween configured to receive clips 114. For example, the attachment mechanism 112 can be eight apertures defined by one horizontal beam 112a and three vertical beams 112b, as well as the edges of the attachment mechanism on four sides. In some embodiments, the attachment mechanism can be 1-10 apertures defined by 1-3 horizontal beams and 1-10 vertical beams. In some embodiments, the attachment mechanism can be 1-20 apertures defined by 1-10 horizontal beams and 1-20 vertical beams. The upper body 106 and lower body 108 can have two attachment mechanisms each, one on either side. In some embodiments, the upper body 106 and lower body 108 can have 1-5 attachment mechanisms each. The horizontal beam 112a of the attachment mechanism 112 can be a round or cylindrical element.

[0074] Support pads 102 can be positioned on the attachment mechanisms 112. The support pads 102 can be curved rectangular components, or ears. The support pads 102 near the top 120 can curve downwards and the support pads 102 near the bottom 122 can curve upwards, for example being slanted 25°. The support pads 102 can be slanted 10-50°. This can allow the soft material to fit the patient’s back. A proximal side 130 of the support pads can be positioned such that they contact the back of a patient. A rim 103 of the support pad 102 can curve in a proximal direction to contour the back of a patient. The proximal side 130 of the support pads 102 can be made of a padded material. The support pads 102 on the bottom 122 can have a greater curve than the support pads 102 on the top 120. In some embodiments, the support pads 102 on the bottom 122 can have a smaller or equal curve to the support pads 102 on the top 120. The support pads 102 can be made of rigid or semi-rigid material, for example plastic, metal, a composite, or polyamide. The support pads 102 can be adjusted to be placed in various lateral positions, as described herein, based on the size or shape of the patient’s back. The support pads 102 can be rotated, as described herein, to accommodate the patient.

[0075] The support pads 102 can have clips 114 disposed on the distal side 132 (the rear of the support pad, facing away from a user when worn), to secure them to the attachment mechanisms 112. Each clip 114 can be two protrusions that can surround a portion of the attachment mechanism 112. The clips 114 can be frictionally seated around the attachment mechanism 112 to secure the support pads 102. The clips 114 can surround the top and bottom of a horizontal beam 112a of the attachment mechanism 112. The clips 114 can be curved such that they contour with the round or cylindrical horizontal beam 112a of the attachment mechanism 112. The clips 114 can be prevented from sliding horizontally by the vertical beams112b and side edges of the attachment mechanism 112. The vertical beams 112b of the attachment mechanism 112, or the side edges of the attachment mechanism 112, can be near both sides of the clips 114. In some embodiments, the clips can surround the sides of a vertical beam 112b of the attachment mechanism.

[0076] Each support pad 102 can have two clips 114. In some embodiments, each support pad can have 1-5 clips. The horizontal position of the support pads 102 can be adjusted by changing the position of the clips 114 on the attachment mechanism 112. The clips 114 can be removed from the attachment mechanism and repositioned at another position along the attachment mechanism. The clips 114 can have a dimension that aligns with the dimension of the horizontal beam 112a of the attachment mechanism 112. The support pads 102 can have two clips 114 with a space between them. Advantageously, this can allow the support pad 102 to be secured to the attachment mechanism 112 in a secure manner, as the clips are prevented from moving horizontally and vertically and the support pad 102 is restricted from bending.

[0077] The support pads 102 can rotate while positioned on the attachment mechanism 112, as described in Figures 5A and 5B. Rotation can allow the support pads 102 to fit more comfortably or effectively on the patient’s back.

[0078] The frame 100 can have a height from top 120 to bottom 122 of 250 or 290 mm. In some embodiments, the frame can have a height of 100-400 mm. In some embodiments, the frame can have a height of 50-600 mm. The frame 100 can have a width of 225 mm when the support pads 102 are positioned closer together and 285 mm when the massage pads 102 are positioned further apart. In some embodiments, the frame can have a width of 100-400 mm when the support pads are positioned closer together and 100-400 mm when the massage pads are positioned further apart. In some embodiments, the frame can have a width of 50-600 mm when the support pads are positioned closer together and 50-600 mm when the massage pads are positioned further apart.

[0079] The distance D2 between a distal side 132 of the support pads 102 and the distal side 132 of the attachment mechanism 112 can be 22 mm. In some embodiments, the distance D2 between a distal side of the support pads and the distal side of the attachment mechanism can be 10-40 mm. In some embodiments, the distance D2 between a distal side of the support pads and the distal side of the attachment mechanism can be 5-60 mm. The distance DI between a proximal side 130 of the support pads 102 and the distal side 132 of theattachment mechanism 112 can be 54 mm. In some embodiments, the distance DI between a proximal side of the support pads and the distal side of the attachment mechanism can be 30- 70 mm. In some embodiments, the distance DI between a proximal side of the support pads and the distal side of the attachment mechanism can be 10-90 mm.

[0080] The distance between the inner edges of the bars 104 can be 78.5 mm. In some embodiments, the distance between the inner edges of the bars can be 50-100 mm. In some embodiments, the distance between the inner edges of the bars can be 10-200 mm.

[0081] FIG. 2A illustrates a back view of an embodiment of a frame 200 with adjustable support pads 102. FIG. 2B illustrates a front view of an embodiment of the frame 200 of FIG. 2A. The frame 200 can be similar to frame 100, but the bars 204 can be shorter than the bars 104. The shorter frame 200 can be advantageous for certain back problems, for example by contacting a closer area around a disc. The frame 200 can fit patients that the frame 100 of Figure 1 cannot fit. The frames 100, 200 can fit most or all patients.

[0082] FIG. 3 A illustrates a front view of an embodiment of a frame 100 with an elastic band 334 positioned in the slots 110. FIG. 3B illustrates a back view of an embodiment of a frame 100 with an elastic band 334 positioned in the slots 110.

[0083] The elastic band 334 can secure the frame 100 to a back brace, as described in Figure 7. The elastic band 334 can fit through the slots 110 of the bars 104. Both ends of the elastic band 334 can be positioned through the slots 110 of the bars 104 and attached to the elastic band 334 to secure the elastic band 334 in place.

[0084] FIG. 4A illustrates a front view of an embodiment of a frame 100 with an elastic band 334 and padded strips 436. FIG. 4B illustrates a back view of the embodiment of a frame 100 with an elastic band 334 and padded strips 436 of FIG. 4 A.

[0085] The padded strips 436 can be positioned on a proximal side 130 of the support pads 102. A padded strip 436 can cover two support pads 102. In some embodiments, a padded strip can cover 1-10 support pads. The padded strip 436 can be made of a soft or elastic material. The padded strip 436 can be curved at both ends to align with the support pads 102. The padded strips 436 can be hooked onto, wrapped around, or otherwise attached to the support pads 102. For example, the padded strips 436 can fit around an outer edge of the support pads 102.

[0086] FIG. 5A illustrates a perspective view of an embodiment of a support pad 102 rotated downward on an attachment mechanism 112. FIG. 5B illustrates a perspective view of the embodiment of a support pad 102 rotated upward on an attachment mechanism 112 of FIG. 5 A.

[0087] The support pads 102 can rotate as the clips 114 rotate about the horizontal beam 112a of the attachment mechanism 112. The upper and lower edges of the attachment mechanism 112 can restrict rotation of the support pads 102. The support pads 102 can rotate about a horizontal axis. For example, the support pads 102 can rotate downward, or away from the top 120, as seen in Figure 5 A. The support pads 102 can rotate upward, or toward the top 120, as seen in Figure 5B. The support pads 102 can be restricted from rotating in a horizontal direction. When secured to a patient, the support pads 102 can rotate such that they contour with the back of the patient. The support pads 102 can be rotated 25 degrees. In some embodiments, the support pads can be rotated 20-60 degrees. In some embodiments, the support pads can be rotated 10-90 degrees.

[0088] FIG. 6 illustrates a back view of a support pad 102. The clips 114 can be near an inner end of the support pad 102. The clips 114 can have a round inner cavity that aligns with the horizontal beam 112a of the attachment mechanism. The clips 114 can be at least partially flexible and biased inward such that they grip the horizontal beam 112a of the attachment mechanism. The clips 114 can be removable from the horizontal beam 112a of the attachment mechanism by pulling the support pad 102 with sufficient force. The clips 114 can be secured to the attachment mechanism by pushing the support pad 102 with the clips 114 aligned with the horizontal beam 112a of the attachment mechanism with sufficient force. The rim 103 of the support pad 102 can have a rounded outer edge.

[0089] FIG. 7 illustrates a front view of the embodiment of a frame 100 with an elastic band 334 and padded strips 436 of FIG. 4A on a Flexible textile substrate 740.

[0090] The Flexible textile substrate 740 can be a flexible textile substrate. The Flexible textile substrate 740 can be wrapped around a person. The ends of the Flexible textile substrate 740 can be coupled together such that it stays around the person. The Flexible textile substrate 740 can be positioned such that it sits on the affected area of the person, for example the pelvis, the lower back, the mid-back, or the upper back. The Flexible textile substrate 740 can be made of polymeric material.

[0091] The frame 100 can be hooked onto the inside of the Flexible textile substrate740. The Flexible textile substrate 740 can be tight enough that there is at least some pressure between the support pads 102 and the back of the person. The elastic band 334 can be attached to the Flexible textile substrate 740. The elastic band 334 can be hooked onto the inside of the Flexible textile substrate 740 or secured to straps on the inside of the Flexible textile substrate 740. The elastic band 334 can be fixed to the Flexible textile substrate 740 on one side, and the other side of the elastic band 334 can be inserted through the slots 110 of the bars 104 and attached to the Flexible textile substrate 740 to secure the frame 100 in place.

[0092] FIG. 8A illustrates a back view of an embodiment of a frame 800 with a sliding attachment mechanism 812. FIG. 8B illustrates a perspective view of the embodiment of a frame 800 with a sliding attachment mechanism 812 of FIG. 8 A. FIG. 8C illustrates a top view of the embodiment of the sliding attachment mechanism 812 of FIG. 8 A.

[0093] The sliding attachment mechanism 812 can be columns on a distal end of the upper body 106 and lower body 108 of the frame 800. The columns can be wider on a distal end and narrower on a proximal end. The support pads 802 can have column clips 814, or similar columns meant to interlock with the columns of the attachment mechanism 812 to secure the support pads to the rest of the frame 800. The upper body 106 and lower body 108 can each have two attachment portions 812, for example one on each side. Each attachment mechanism 812 can have three columns. In some embodiments, the attachment mechanisms 812 can each have 1-10 columns.

[0094] The column clips 814 can fit around one column of the attachment mechanism 812. The outer edges of the column clips 814 can be surrounded by columns of the attachment mechanism 812 and the side edges of the attachment mechanism 812.

[0095] The support pads 802 can lack rotation. When the column clips 814 are locked into the attachment mechanism 812, the support pads 802 can be restricted from moving. The column clips 814 can be locked in or removed from the attachment mechanism 812 with sufficient force. Removing the column clips 814 from the attachment mechanism and reattaching the column clips 814 at a different horizontal point on the attachment mechanism 812 can adjust the horizontal position of the support pads 802, similar to as described in Figure 1.

[0096] With reference to FIG. 9, an example of a back bracing system 900 is illustrated. The back bracing system 900 may include a flexible textile substrate 901 and a shell902. In some embodiments, the shell 902 can be flexible or semi-rigid. The shell 902 can be configured to bend, flex, and / or wrap around the back and torso of a wearer. The shell 902 can be made of, or include a polymeric material (e.g., polyethylene, polyurethane, polyamide, etc.). The shell 902 may include a central body 903 and one or more lateral components 940 (e.g., two lateral components 940) coupled to and extending from the central body 903. The one or more lateral components 940 may be made of, or include, a polymeric material (e.g., polyethylene, polyurethane, polyamide, etc.). The shell 902 may come in different sizes or heights (see FIGS. 11A-12D). The central body 903 and the one or more lateral components 940 may be coupled together with one or more clips 960. The one or more lateral components 940 may overlap the central body 903 when coupled. The one or more lateral components 940 may be positioned on an outward facing surface 926 (see FIG. 10A) of the central body903. The one or more lateral components 940 may be flexible. As used herein, “flexible” generally refers to the ability (e.g., of a material or an article) to bend freely and repeatably without breaking and / or to conform to the shape of the body part to which the flexible material (or article) is applied. For example, the one or more lateral components 940 can be configured to wrap around the back and torso of a wearer. Advantageously, this can provide support to a wearer to prevent and / or reduce spinal flexion (e.g., rotational flexion, lateral flexion, extension, circumduction, etc.).

[0097] The flexible textile substrate 901 may be couplable to the shell 902 with one or more elastic members 974. In an example, the flexible textile substrate 901 may be removably coupled to the shell 902 with the one or more elastic members 974. The one or more elastic members 974 can extend through one or more of the openings 946 positioned at the distal end 944 of the one or more lateral components 940. The one or more elastic members 974 can include a fastener to secure the one or more lateral components 940 to the flexible textile substrate 901. In some embodiments, the one or more elastic members 974 can include a hook and loop fastener, where the hook can be located on the one or more elastic members 974 and loop can be located on the flexible textile substrate 901. Therefore, a user can affix the one or more elastic members 974 extending through the openings 946 to the flexible textile substrate 901. Additionally, the flexible textile substrate 901 may have one or more elasticmembers 974 configured to stretch around or extend through the central body 903 to secure the shell 902 to the flexible textile substrate 901. The shell 902 may be couplable to an internal part of the flexible textile substrate 901. In some embodiments, the flexible textile substrate 901 can have regions with different degrees of elasticity which can help secure the back bracing system 900 to the wearer.

[0098] As shown in FIG. 9, the flexible textile substrate 901 can extend from a first end 970 to a second end 972. The first end 970 and the second end 972 can have a fastener to secure the ends to one another. For example, the fastener on the first end 970 and second end 972 can be a hook and loop fastener, where the hook can be on the first end 970 and the loop can be on the second end 972. Additionally, the hook can be on the second end 972 and the loop can be on the first end 970. The one or more lateral components 940 can be placed within the lateral portions 976, 978 of the flexible textile substrate 901. The flexible textile substrate 901 can also have an elastic band 977 on the lateral portions 976, 978. The one or more lateral components 940 can extend or pass through the elastic band 977. The elastic band 977 can secure (e.g., affix, attach, etc.) the one or more lateral components 940 to the inside portion of the flexible textile substrate 901. In some embodiments, the central body 903 can be disposed on the medial portion 980 of the flexible textile substrate 901.

[0099] In some embodiments, the one or more lateral components 940 can translate to one or more positions when coupled to the central body 903 to accommodate the waist of different users. In some embodiments, the one or more lateral components 940 can freely translate (e.g., without tightening of fixing the one or more lateral components 940 to one location) along one or more slots 910 of the central body 903. For example, the one or more lateral components 940 can translate from a first position where the shell 902 has the smallest width along a lateral direction (e.g., x-direction) to a second position where the shell 902 has the widest width along the lateral direction (e.g., x-direction). In the first position, the one or more lateral components 940 may have the most overlap with the central body 903 (e.g., the proximal end 942 of the flexible textile substrate 901 is closer to the medial portion 906 of the central body 903). In the second position, the one or more lateral components 940 can have the least overlap with the central body 903 (e.g., the proximal end 942 of the flexible textile substrate 901 is further from the medial portion 906 of the central body 903).

[0100] The one or more lateral components 940 can translate to any position along the one or more slots 910 to accommodate to the waist of a wearer. The one or more lateral components 940 can have varying amounts of overlap with the central body 903 as the one or more lateral components 940 translate within the one or more slots 910. The one or more lateral components 940 can translate in the lateral direction (e.g., x-direction) automatically when a pushing or pulling force is applied to the one or more lateral components 940. Advantageously, by allowing the one or more lateral components 940 to translate automatically in the one or more slots 910 a user does not have to remove the back bracing system 900 to make manual adjustments (e.g., screwing, tightening, coupling, etc.) to the size or width of the shell 902. Automatically translating the one or more lateral components 940 can make the back bracing system 900 easier for the user to properly adjust at home and away from the instruction of a physician or medical professional.

[0101] In some embodiments, when a user flexes or pulls one or more ends (e.g., first end 970 and / or second end 972) of flexible textile substrate 901 to secure the back bracing system 900 to the patient’s waist and / or back, the one or more lateral components 940 may also extend or translate along the central body 903 to conform to the waist of the wearer. Advantageously, having one or more lateral components 940 capable of translating along a lateral direction provides increased support and stability to the spine and back of a variety of different patients (e.g., smaller waist circumferences and larger waist circumferences) without requiring each patient to purchase a custom back bracing system. The one or more lateral components 940 may wrap around and / or stabilize at least a portion of the back or torso of the patient to provide spinal support. Additionally, to increase or decrease the width of the shell 902, a patient or user may pull or push the one or more lateral components 940 in a lateral direction. Pushing or pulling the one or more lateral components 940 can translate the one or more lateral components 940 along the one or more slots 910 to set the shell 902 width to a desired size.

[0102] In some embodiments, the one or more lateral components 940 may be capable of rotating relative to the central body 903. For example, when a user attempts to secure the flexible textile substrate 901 around their waist, the one or more lateral components 940 may be capable of rotating upwards or downwards to provide optimal support to the back and spinal column. The one or more lateral components 940 may be capable of rotating fromzero degrees to one-hundred-and-eighty degrees clockwise or counterclockwise. Additionally, by having the one or more lateral components 940 capable of rotating, the back bracing system 900 may be capable of supporting users in a variety of motions or biomechanical positions which can help prevent micro-motions which can trigger pain. To rotate the one or more lateral components 940, a user may pull the one or more lateral components 940 upwards or downwards to rotate the one or more lateral components 940 about the one or more slots 910. Additionally, a user may pull the first end 970 and or the second end 972 of the flexible textile substrate 901 to rotate the one or more lateral components 940 upwards or downwards in a clockwise or counterclockwise direction. The one or more clips 960 may provide a pivot point or axis of rotation for the one or more lateral components 940.

[0103] As shown in FIG. 9 and further in FIGS. 10A-10B, the central body 903 can have one or more slots 910 (e.g., two slots) which may allow the one or more lateral components 940 to translate along a lateral direction (e.g., horizontal, x-direction) and / or rotate in a clockwise or counterclockwise direction. The one or more slots 910 may extend from a second end 914 located near a lateral portion 908 (e.g., the second position) of the central body 903 to a first end 912 located near a medial portion 906 (e.g., first position) of the central body 903. In some embodiments, the one or more lateral components 940 can translate within the one or more slots 910 accommodate to a patient with a waist size of 75 cm. The one or more lateral components 940 may also translate within the one or more slots 910 to accommodate to a patient with a waist size of 135 cm. Translating the one or more lateral components 940 along the one or more slots 910 can allow back bracing system 900 to be capable of adjusting to patients having a waist circumference between 75 cm and 135 cm. In some embodiments, translating the one or more lateral components 940 towards the first end 912 of the one or more slots 910 can reduce (e.g., decrease) the total width of the shell 902. In some embodiments, translating the one or more lateral components 940 towards the second end 914 of the one or more slots 910 can increase the total width of the shell 902.

[0104] The central body 903 may be generally rectangular and have one or more curved edges. Additionally, the central body 903 can be curved (e.g., lordosis, kyphosis, S- shaped curve, traditional camber, zero camber, reverse camber) to conform to the back of a wearer. The one or more curved edges or general curvature of the central body 903 may allow for forces to be more evenly spread along the back of the patient or wearer to avoid any pressurepoints which can cause pain or irritation. The central body 903 may also be shaped to follow a curvilinear path along the lateral portions 908 of the outside edge 904 to reduce the number of pressure points on the back of the patient. The central body 903 may follow a curvilinear path along the topmost and bottommost edges of the central body 903. The central body 903 may be generally curved from a medial portion 906 of the central body to a lateral portion 908 of the central body 903 to support a lower back and spine of the user.

[0105] The central body 903 may have one or more holes 918 dispersed along the body from a topmost area to a bottommost area on the lateral portions 908. Advantageously, the one or more holes 918 may allow the central body 903 to be more breathable (e.g., increase ventilation) and so that the patient does not overheat or sweat profusely along their lower back or spine. Therefore, patients can wear the back bracing system 900 for longer periods of time without becoming sweaty or uncomfortable. Additionally, the one or more holes 918 can increase the flexibility (e.g., compliance) of the central body 903. In some embodiments, the central body 903 may include one or more openings 916. The one or more openings 916 can extend laterally (e.g., horizontally) and / or longitudinally (e.g., vertically). The one or more openings 916 may allow for the central body 903 to conform or flex to the back of a patient or user. The one or more openings 916 may be positioned on the medial portion 906 of the central body 903. Additionally, the one or more openings 916 may provide ventilation which may prevent the wearer from becoming overheated and / or uncomfortable. In some embodiments the one or more openings 916 (e.g., vertical openings) may allow the one or more elastic members 974 to pass through to couple the central body 903 to the flexible textile substrate 901.

[0106] The central body 903 may also have a groove 932 (e.g., channel) positioned along the medial portion 906. The groove 932 can protrude outwards from the inward facing surface 924 to the outward facing surface 926. The inward facing surface 924 may be opposite the outward facing surface 926. The inward facing surface 924 may be positioned on the back of the wearer. The inward facing surface 924 may also be coupled to a pad 990 (see. FIGS. 14A-14B). The outward facing surface 926 may be positioned on the flexible textile substrate 901. In some embodiments, the groove 932 may be configured to accommodate to the spinal column of the patient. In some embodiments, the groove 932 may be C-shaped. The groove 932 may also be curved (e.g., S-shaped curve, traditional camber, reverse camber) along avertical axis of the central body 903. Advantageously, by placing the groove 932 along the medial portion 906 of the central body 903, pressure is not exerted on the spinal column of the patient and the remaining portions of the central body 903 can disperse forces to relieve pain at the affected back areas and the spinal column.

[0107] In some embodiments, the central body 903 may have one or more ribs 930. The one or more ribs 930 may be positioned on the outward facing surface 926 of the central body 903. The one or more ribs 930 may be configured to provide additional support and / or rigidity to the central body 903 of the back bracing system 900. Advantageously, the one or more ribs 930 may prevent the central body 903 from excessive bending about the groove 932. In some embodiments, the one or more ribs 930 can extend from the groove 932 located at medial portion 906 of the central body 903 to the lateral portions 908 of the central body 903.

[0108] The central body 903 may also have a height (H) extending in the longitudinal direction (e.g., vertically, y-direction). The height of the central body 903 may be 31 centimeters. Additionally, the height of the central body 903 may be 37 centimeters. In some embodiments, the height of the central body 903 may between approximately 22 centimeters and 40 centimeters.

[0109] In some embodiments, the central body 903 may also have one or more fasteners 928. The one or more fasteners 928 may be used attach a pad 990 (see FIGS. 14A- 14B) to the central body 903. In some embodiments, the one or more fasteners 928 can be a hook and loop fastener. The hook can be positioned on the central body 903 and the loop can be positioned on the pad 990.

[0110] FIGS. 11A-11D illustrate a larger version of an embodiment of the shell 902 removed from the flexible textile substrate 901. The shell 902 in FIGS. 11A-1 IB and 1 ID may have a height (H) of approximately 37 centimeters. FIG. 11A illustrates the shell 902 showing the outward facing surface 926 of the central body 903. FIG. 1 IB illustrates the shell 902 showing the inward facing surface 924 of the central body 903. FIG. 11C illustrates the one or more lateral components 940. FIG. 1 ID illustrates a top view of the shell 902. The one or more lateral components 940 may be made from polyethylene. Additionally, the one or more lateral components 940 may be made from any suitable material (e.g., polyethylene, polyurethane, polyamide, etc.) to provide rigidity along the back and / or torso of the wearer. The one or more lateral components 940 can extend from a proximal end 942 to a distal end944. The proximal end 942 of the one or more lateral components 940 may be wider or larger than the distal end 944. Therefore, the one or more lateral components 940 can taper from the proximal end 942 to the distal end 944 along a top edge 956 and a bottom edge 958. Advantageously, tapering the one or more lateral components 940 may increase the amount of comfort experienced by the wearer along the lateral or side portions of the wearer’s torso. For example, tapering the one or more lateral components 940 may keep the shell 902 from extending into the wearer’s ribcage or hip bones. For example, the curvature of the bottom edge 958 may extend above or avoid the hip bone of the wearer to eliminate discomfort while sitting or standing. The curvature of the top edge 956 may extend below or avoid the ribcage of the wearer to eliminate discomfort while sitting or standing. Additionally, tapering the one or more lateral components 940 may prevent the shell 902 from pinching the clothes or skin of the wearer.

[0111] The one or more lateral components 940 may have one or more horizontal slits or openings 946 which may extend from the proximal end 942 to the distal end 944. The one or more openings 946 may provide increased breathability or ventilation. Additionally, the openings 946 may allow for the one or more lateral components 940 to conform or flex to better support the back, spine, and / or torso of the wearer. The openings 946 may also vary in height from the proximal end 942 to the distal end 944 (e.g., decrease in height or taper from the proximal end 942 to the distal end 944). The openings 946 may also be used to couple the one or more lateral components 940 to the flexible textile substrate 901 with the one or more elastic members 974. Additionally, in some embodiments, the one or more lateral components 940 may have one or more holes 948 which can provide additional ventilation along the back and / or waist of the user. The one or more holes 948 may also increase the flexibility of the one or more lateral components 940.

[0112] FIGS. 12A-12D illustrate a smaller version of an embodiments of the shell 902 removed from the flexible textile substrate 901. The shell 902 may have a height (H) of approximately 31 centimeters. FIG. 12A illustrates the shell 902 in a front perspective view showing outward facing surface 926 of the central body 903. FIG. 12B. illustrates the shell 902 showing the inward facing surface 924 of the central body 903. FIG. 12C illustrates the one or more lateral components 940. FIG. 12D illustrates a top view of the shell 902. The one or more lateral components 940 may be made from polyethylene. Additionally, the one or morelateral components 940 may be made from any suitable material (e.g., polyethylene, polyurethane, polyamide, etc.) The one or more lateral components 940 can extend from a proximal end 942 to a distal end 944. The proximal end 942 of the one or more lateral components 940 may be wider or larger than the distal end 944. Therefore, the one or more lateral components 940 can taper from the proximal end 942 to the distal end 944. Advantageously, tapering the one or more lateral components 940 may increase the amount of comfort experienced by the wearer along the lateral or side portions of the wearer’s torso. For example, tapering the one or more lateral components 940 may keep the shell 902 from extending into the patient or user’s ribcage. Additionally, tapering the one or more lateral components 940 may prevent the shell 902 from pinching the clothes or skin of the wearer.

[0113] The one or more lateral components 940 may have one or more horizontal slits or openings 946 which may extend from the proximal end 942 to the distal end 944. The one or more openings 946 may provide increased breathability or ventilation. Additionally, the openings 946 may allow for the one or more lateral components 940 to conform or flex to better support the back, spine, and torso of the wearer. The openings 946 may also vary in height from the proximal end 942 to the distal end 944 (e.g., decrease in height or taper from the proximal end 942 to the distal end 944). The openings 946 may also be used to couple the one or more lateral components 940 to the flexible textile substrate 901. Additionally, in some embodiments, the one or more lateral components 940 may have one or more holes 948 which can provide additional ventilation along the back and / or waist of the user. The one or more holes 948 may also increase the flexibility of the one or more lateral components 940.

[0114] FIG. 13 illustrates a front perspective view of the one or more clips 960. A clip 960 may extend through the one or more slits 950 of the one or more lateral components 940. The one or more clips 960 may be used to couple the central body 903 to the one or more lateral components 940. In some embodiments, the clip 960 can extend through the one or more slits 950 and one or more slots 910 to secure the one or more lateral components 940 to the central body 903. For example, a top surface 962 (e.g., top coupling surface) of the one or more clips 960 may be secured on the one or more lateral components 940 and a bottom surface 964 (e.g., bottom coupling surface) of the one or more clips 960 may be secured to the central body 903. The bottom surface 964 may be larger than the one or more slots 910 in a longitudinal direction (e.g., y-direction). The top surface 962 of the one or more clips 960 maybe larger (e.g., greater surface area) than the opening of the one or more slits 950. The top surface 962 can be larger (e.g., greater surface area) than the bottom surface 964. one or more clips 960 can be made from polyamide. In some embodiments the one or more clips 960 can be made from polyamide reinforced with 30% glass fiber. Additionally, the one or more clips 960 can be made from any suitable material (e.g., polyamide, polyethylene, polyurethane, aluminum, metal, ceramic etc.).

[0115] In some embodiments, the one or more clips 960 can freely translate (e.g., without tightening of fixing the clips 960 to one location) in the one or more slots 910 from the first end 912 to the second end 914. Advantageously, by allowing the one or more clips 960 to freely slide in the one or more slots 910 can allow a wearer to easily change the waist size (e.g., circumference).

[0116] In some embodiments, the one or more clips 960 can be composed of two parts, a top part and a bottom part, where the bottom part can secure and extend through the central body 903 and the top part can secure and extend through the one or more lateral components 940. Additionally, the one or more lateral components 940 can be secured to the central body 903 with suitable coupling method (e.g., metal rods, pins, magnets, etc.) which permits translation and rotation of the one or more lateral components 940 relative to the one or more slots 910. The one or more clips 960 can slide within the one or more slots 910 to extend the total span of the shell 902 to conform to the waist circumference of a user.

[0117] FIGS. 14A-14B illustrate a pad 990 which can be attached to the central body 903 of the shell 902. The pad 990 can be affixed (e.g., attached) to the inward facing surface 924 of the central body 903. The one or more fasteners 928 can attach the pad 990 to the central body 903. Additionally, the pad 990 can comprise one or more vertical openings 992. The one or more vertical openings 992 allow the one or more elastic members 974 to secure the pad 990 to the central body 903 and flexible textile substrate 901. Advantageously, the pad 990 can provide additional comfort to the wearer. The pad 990 can be made of, or include a foam material (e.g., polyurethane, memory, closed cell, charcoal, latex, high resilience, etc.).

[0118] In some embodiments, a method for providing stabilization, support, bracing, and / or pain relief to the back are provided. The method can include using embodiments of the back bracing system 900, flexible textile substrate 901, and shell 902illustrated in FIGS. 9-12D. To use the back bracing system 900 a user can first position the shell 902 inside the flexible textile substrate 901. The outward facing surface 926 of the central body 903 can face the inward surface of the flexible textile substrate 901. The user can attach or position the central body 903 to the flexible textile substrate 901 via the one or more elastic members 974. The user can also attach or position the one or more lateral components 940 to the flexible textile substrate 901 via the one or more elastic members 974 and the elastic bands 977. The method can further include positioning the inward facing surface 924 of the central body 903 on the lower back of the user. To adjust the one or more lateral components 940 a user can slide or translate the one or more lateral components 940 along the one or more slots 910 to any position. Additionally, a user can translate the one or more lateral components 940 from a first position adjacent to the medial portion 906 of the central body 903 to a second position adjacent to the lateral portions 908 of the central body 903. In some embodiments, translating the one or more lateral components 940 from the first position to the second position (e.g., in a first direction) can increase the total width or circumference of the shell 902. Additionally, translating the one or more components 940 from the second position to the first position (e.g., in a second direction) can decrease the total width or circumference of the shell.

[0119] In some embodiments, the method can include positioning the groove 932 along the spine of the wearer. The lateral portions 908 can be placed on lateral sides of the wearer’s back. The one or more lateral components 940 can be positioned on the wearer’s back and can wrap around the sides (e.g., torso) of the wearer. The one or more lateral components 940 can wrap around or past the medial centerline of the wearer. The method can further include positioning the pad 990 on the inward facing surface 924 of the central body 903. The pad 990 can be positioned on the back of the wearer to provide additional comfort.

[0120] Figure 15 illustrates another embodiment of a flexible textile substrate 1501. In many aspects, the flexible textile substrate 1501 is similar to the flexible textile substrate 901 described above and the same or similar reference numbers are used to refer to the same or similar features. For example, the flexible textile substrate 1501 includes a first end 1570, a second end 1572, and lateral portions 1576, 1578. The flexible textile substrate 1501 can also include a pulley system including one or more pulley stays 1534 (e.g., two) positioned at a medial portion of the flexible textile substrate 1501. The pulley stays 1534 can have a cable 1537 extending through openings 1536 (see Fig. 16A) of the one or more pulleystays 1534. The cable 1537 can connect to the one or more pull tabs 1582 which can be pulled to tighten or secure the flexible textile substrate 1501 to the back of a wearer.

[0121] In some embodiments, the flexible textile substrate 1501 can include one or more straps 1594 which can extend from the medial portion of the flexible textile substrate 1501 towards (e.g., distally) towards the first end 1570 and the second end 1572. The one or more straps 1594, can extend from a region adjacent to (e.g., near) the one or more pulley stays 1534 towards the respective end (e.g., first end 1570) of the flexible textile substrate 1501. The one or more straps 1594 can be flexible (e.g., compliant, extendible) in a lateral direction. The one or more straps 1594 can help the brace (e.g., flexible textile substrate 1501) adapt to the movements of a wearer. Advantageously, the flexible textile substrate 1501 not only enhances comfort for the wearer but can also help ensure that the flexible textile substrate 1501 is maintained in an effective location (e.g., position on the back) throughout the healing process.

[0122] The flexible textile substrate 1501 can be couplable to the shell 902 and / or the frame 100 (e.g., system shown in Figures 9-12D, system shown in Figures 1A-4B) at an inner or inward facing surface of the flexible textile substrate 1501. The shell 902 can be coupled to the flexible textile substrate 1501 similar to or identical to as disclosed above for flexible textile substrate 901. The frame 100 can be coupled to the flexible textile substrate 1501 similar to or identical to as disclosed above for the flexible textile substrate 740.

[0123] As shown in Figures 16A-16B, the one or more pulley stays 1534 can have a plurality of extrusions 1538 (e.g., 4) which extend upwards from bottom surface 1539 of the one or more pulley stays 1534. The openings 1536 extend through the plurality of extrusions 1538. The cable 1537 can extend through each of the openings 1536 and to one or more pull tabs 1582.

[0124] Figures 17A-17C shown the one or more pull tabs 1582. The one or more pull tabs 1582 can be used to tighten the flexible textile substrate 1501. Pulling the one or more pull tabs 1582 coupled to the cable 1537 can reduce a space between adjacent pulley stays 1534 positioned on the flexible textile substrate 1501 by moving the 1534 closer together. Since the one or more pulley stays 1534 can extend vertically (e.g., along a vertical axis, upwards along the sagittal plane) the flexible textile substrate 1501 can provide optimal support along a desired region of the back (e.g., the lower back) and spine.

[0125] The one or more pull tabs 1582 can include openings or regions 1584 which a user can extend a finger through in order to pull (e.g., exert a pulling force) the tabs to tighten the flexible textile substrate 1501. The region 1584 can be located on a lower portion 1588 of the one or more pull tabs 1582. Additionally, the cable 1537 can extend through an opening 1589 of the one or more pull tabs 1582 and have an end located in a space 1585 formed between the lower portion 1588 and an upper portion 1586. Additionally, the cable 1537 can extend to a puller tab 1596 (see Figures 18A-18C). The puller tab 1596 can have a space 1598 which can receive the cable 1537 (e.g., wrap around a portion of the puller tab 1596 via the space 1598). Advantageously, by pulling the puller tab 1596 the flexible textile substrate 1501 can tighten around the back and torso of the wearer to increase support.Additional Embodiments
