AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Conventional electrical tuning phase shifters, particularly analog phase shifters, are heavy, complex to assemble, require extra space, and compromise radiation performance due to shielding covers, leading to increased undesired coupling and decreased electromagnetic compatibility (EMC).

Method used

A dielectric phase shifter integrated with a power divider board, utilizing a metal sheet and dielectric member with a groove and actuating mechanism, eliminating the need for extra shielding covers, simplifying assembly, and enabling flexible placement, while achieving better EMC and reduced weight.

Benefits of technology

The integrated phase shifter reduces weight, size, and cost, improves passive intermodulation (PIM) performance, and ensures stable phase adjustment, enhancing beam performance and radiation efficiency.

Description

DIELECTRIC PHASE SHIFTER, ANTENNA ARRAY, AND ANTENNAFIELD

[0001] Embodiments of the present disclosure generally relate to the field of communication antenna, and more particularly, to a dielectric phase shifter, an antenna array, and an antenna.BACKGROUND

[0002] With the development of 5th Generation Mobile Communication Technology (5G) , more and more communication frequency bands have been used. To obtain accurate communication signals, the number of elements of an antenna is gradually increasing. A phase shifter can control a phase of the antenna, which will result in a more accurate signal direction and a better signal cover. The phase shifter is widely applied in the communication system, especially in the mobile communication system.

[0003] The phase shifter can create a specific phase difference among antenna elements and make electromagnetic waves superimposed in a specified direction. With the phase shifter, the antenna can cause an accurate beam direction, such that undesired signal interference of a near communication network sector can be reduced.

[0004] There are two kinds of conventional phase shifters, one is a mechanical tuning phase shifter, and the other is an electrical tuning phase shifter. The electrical tuning phase shifter contains a phase shift part and a remote electrical tilt (RET) actuator part and can be tuned remotely. In a case that the electrical tuning phase shifter is used, lighter weight and cost as well as good performance are becoming more and more important for the communication system, especially for 5th generation radio module.SUMMARY

[0063] Throughout the drawings, the same or similar reference symbols are used to indicate the same or similar elements. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF EMBODIMETNS

[0064] Principles of the present disclosure will now be described with reference to several example embodiments shown in the drawings. Though example embodiments of the present disclosure are illustrated in the drawings, it is to be understood that the embodiments are described only to facilitate those skilled in the art in better understanding and thereby achieving the present disclosure, rather than to limit the scope of the disclosure in any manner.

[0065] The term “comprises” or “includes” and its variants are to be read as open terms that mean “includes, but is not limited to. ” The term “or” is to be read as “and / or” unless the context clearly indicates otherwise. The term “based on” is to be read as “based at least in part on. ” The term “being operable to” is to mean a function, an action, a motion or a state can be achieved by an operation induced by a user or an external mechanism. The term “one embodiment” and “an embodiment” are to be read as “at least one embodiment. ” The term “another embodiment” is to be read as “at least one other embodiment. ” The terms “first, ” “second, ” and the like may refer to different or same objects. Other definitions, explicit and implicit, may be included below. A definition of a term is consistent throughout the description unless the context clearly indicates otherwise.

[0066] As described above, in a case that the electrical tuning phase shifter is used, lighter weight and cost as well as good performance are becoming more and more important for the communication system, especially for 5th generation radio module. There are two kinds of conventional electrical tuning phase shifters, one is an analog phase shifter, and the other is a digital phase shifter. The digital phase shifter usually has light weight and low cost, but the radio performance is not so good, such as loss and PIM. Due to its better radio performance, the analog electrical tuning phase shifter is popular in a radio communication system, especially in a Frequency Division Duplexing (FDD) radio system.

[0067] The analog electrical tuning phase shifter typically includes dielectric inserts of U shape or circle shape. A trace of the phase shifter typically is a Printed Circuit Board (PCB) circuit in a dielectric part. The phase of an antenna containing the phase shifter could be adjusted when a connecting area between a dielectric part and a metal part is changed. The analog electrical tuning phase shifter typically needs an extra metal shielding cover on the dielectric part. The cover could be made by diecasting or extrusion. This type of phase shifter has relatively high weight and has a complex assembly process in production. This type of phase shifter typically needs an extra volume, which will influence the radiation performance of the. This kind of phase shifter is not flexible for antenna design. This kind of phase shifter typically needs many solder points, such as the PCB circuit solder points and shielding cover solder points. It is difficult to achieve high level PIM due to presence of the solder points.

[0068] To get better PIM performance and less loss, a sheet metal may be used to replace the PCB circuit having an extra shielding cover on the dielectric part. However, the weight remains high, the assembly process is complicated, and there may be assembly errors. In a case that the shielding cover is half opened, the EMC will be decreased and undesired coupling of near communication paths may be increased.

[0069] To solve the problems as described above, a new kind of integrated dielectric phase shifter is provided herein. The dielectric phase shifter can get better radiation performance, less weight, and reduced cost. In addition, the assembly process of the dielectric phase shifter is simple during production.

[0070] The dielectric phase shifter described herein generally includes a mental sheet part, a dielectric part, and a remote electrical tilt (RET) actuating part. The dielectric phase shifter described herein will not need an extra shielding cover. The shielding function of the dielectric phase shifter can be achieved by a groove in a power divider board. The groove has a mental plating layer inside which shields external undesired signals, such that a better EMC value can be obtained. The groove in the power divider board may also achieve ground (GND) of the dielectric phase shifter. Therefore, the weight of the dielectric phase shifter according to embodiments of the present disclosure can be reduced significantly compared with traditional dielectric phase shifters.

[0071] In addition, according to embodiments of the present disclosure, the location of the groove on the power divider board can be adjusted based on different antenna designs. Therefore, the location of the dielectric phase shifter in the antenna is flexible compared with the conventional dielectric phase shifter with the extra shielding cover. The extra shielding cover typically occupies a big volume and will influence the radiation performance of the antenna.

[0072] In addition, according to embodiments of the present disclosure, the metal sheet of the dielectric phase shifter is connected to a power divider circuit on the power divider board by several dielectric gaskets, such as plastic gaskets. The assembly process typically includes riveting at the bottom side of a reflector member. In this way, an extra solder point is not needed when the dielectric phase shifter is connected to the power divider board, such that the production process is simple and better PIM performance can be obtained.

[0073] In addition, according to embodiments of the present disclosure, the actuating part can be used to adjust a dielectric length on the metal sheet via a series of gears. A vertical transmission rod may drive a horizontal transmission rod via gears and the horizontal transmission rod may drive the dielectric member to move via a series of gears. The vertical transmission rod may be connected to an extra drive machine, such as a motor. The actuating part may adjust the phase of all communication paths at the same time, which will result in stable and consistent phases. In this way, the antenna may get an accurate down tilt and a good beam performance.

[0074] According to embodiments of the present disclosure, the antenna with such a dielectric phase shifter will have better radio frequency (RF) performance and reduced weight, size, and cost. The phase shifter does not need solder points during production, which could achieve good PIM performance. Hereafter, principles of the present disclosure will be described in detail with reference to FIGS. 1A-18.
