Description

Process and System for Manufacturing an antenna split in an Electrically-Conductive Casing Part of an Electronic DeviceFIELD

[0001] The present disclosure generally relates to a process and a system for manufacturing an antenna split in an electrically-conductive part of an electronic device.

[0002] BACKGOUND

[0003] In electronic devices, especially mobile phones or electronic pads with a wireless communication function, an electrically-conductive casing part (usually a metallic casing part) is necessary and usually configured as an antenna of the electronic devices. In order to achieve a satisfied wireless communication effect for the electronic devices, a split has to be left in the metallic casing part. For consideration of the appearance integrity and liquid-proofing performance of the electronic devices, the split will be filled with a non-electrically-conductive material. In the prior art, the non-electrically-conductive material is chosen as a plastic material. For instance, a metallic casing part provided with a split will first undergo a plastic molding procedure such that the split is filled or molded with a plastic material. Then, the electrically-conductive casing part filled or molded with the plastic material will undergo a CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machining procedure in which the electrically-conductive casing part is ground and / or polished to have a smooth outer surface. The split is sometimes called as an antenna split.

[0004] However, it was found that the antenna split filled with the plastic material by the molding procedure might have a poor bonding property with the electrically-conductive casing part such that there might be a gap or gaps, invisible to naked eyes, existing between the antenna split and the electrically-conductive casing part. After the CNC machining procedure or after the electronic devices are hit for example due to falling of them on the ground, the gap or gaps might be maximized such that the appearance integrity and liquid-proofing performance of the electronic devices will become poor and even the overall strength of the casing part can be negatively affected.SUMMARY

[0005] The present disclosure is aimed at proposing a novel process and a system for manufacturing an antenna split on or in an electrically-conductive casing part of an electronic device such that the antenna split can be reliably secured together with the casing part, and thus the electronic device can have attractive appearance integrity and good liquid-proofing performance even after a long-term usage thereof or strong contact thereof with a hard object.

[0006] According to an aspect, the present disclosure proposes a process for manufacturing an antenna split in an electrically-conductive casing part of an electronic device, comprising:

[0007] preparing and providing a mold formed with an injection port;

[0008] at least partially placing the electrically-conductive casing part of the electronic device provided with at least one open-split into the mold and hold the casing part in the mold;

[0009] injecting a liquid glue made of epoxy or polyurethane into the open-split through the injection port of the mold such that the injected liquid glue is held in the open-split within the mold;

[0010] vibrating or shaking the mold for a given period;

[0011] heating the mold such that the glue is cured as the antenna split in the casing part; and

[0012] removing the electrically-conductive casing part with the antenna split from the mold.

[0013] Completely different than the prior art, no plastic molding procedure is adopted to generate the antenna split in the electrically-conductive casing part. Rather, according to the present disclosure, a glue will be directly used to generate the antenna split in the electrically-conductive casing part, which will result in robust connection strength of the antenna split with the electrically-conductive casing part and better water-proofing performance.

[0014] In an embodiment of the present disclosure, the electrically-conductive casing part is a metallic part of a casing of a smart phone, a tablet computer, or a laptop computer. It should be understood that the electronic device can be any electronic devices having a wireless communication function.

[0015] In an embodiment of the present disclosure, vibrating or shaking the mold is carried out in a vacuum chamber having an absolute pressure of about 10 –200 mBar. The absolute pressure will facilitate any bubbles, probably existing in the liquid glue filled in the open-split, to escape therefrom more rapidly.

[0016] In an embodiment of the present disclosure, the liquid glue is configured to have a work life longer than 10 minutes and a viscosity lower than 20000 cps (10 s-1) , preferably at 25

[0017] In an embodiment of the present disclosure, the injection port is formed in the top of the mold such that when the electrically-conductive casing part of the electronic device is at least partially placed in the mold, the injection port of the mold is able to be in fluid communication with the open-split of the electrically-conductive casing part. The  injection port of the mold can be exposed in the top thereof such that the liquid glue can be readily injected through the injection port to flow into the open-split under gravity to fill the open-split.

[0018] In an embodiment of the present disclosure, more than two molds are prepared and provided such that more than two electrically-conductive casing parts can be inserted into the molds respectively.

[0019] According to another aspect, the present disclosure proposes a system for manufacturing an antenna split in an electrically-conductive casing part of an electronic device, comprising:

[0020] a molding module having a molding assembly including more than two molds each of which is configured to have an injection port and to receive an electrically-conductive casing part of an electronic device provided with at least one open-split,

[0021] a glue-injecting module having more than two glue injection devices or machines which are configured to cooperate with the molds such that a liquid glue is able to be injected into the open-splits of the electrically-conductive casing parts received in the molds through the injection ports of the molds respectively; and

[0022] a curing chamber in which the molding module is able to be heated sufficient such that the liquid glue filled in the open-splits is cured to generate an antenna split in each electrically-conductive casing part, wherein prior to the curing, the molding module is vibrated or shaken for a given period. Here, higher production efficiency can be achieved in the system because more than two molds are provided in the molding module such that more than two casing parts can be processed by the system once.

[0023] In an embodiment of the present disclosure, the electrically-conductive casing part is a metallic part of a casing of a smart phone, a tablet computer, or a laptop computer. Especially, the metallic part is an aluminum-made part, or a titanium-made part or a stainless steel-made part, or a magnesium-alloy-made part.

[0024] In an embodiment of the present disclosure, the molding module is vibrated or shaken in a vacuum chamber of the system having an absolute pressure of about 10 –200 mBar.

[0025] In an embodiment of the present disclosure, each of the molds is configured to have a first half-mold and a second half-mold which are selectively separated from and closed to each other. When the first and second half-molds are closed to each other, a hollow cavity is formed therebetween to receive the casing part.

[0026] In an embodiment of the present disclosure, the liquid glue is configured to have a work life longer than 10 minutes and a viscosity lower than 20000 cps (10 s-1) , preferably at 25

[0027] In an embodiment of the present disclosure, the injection port is formed in the top of the respective mold such that when the electrically-conductive casing part of the electronic device is at least partially placed in the respective mold, the injection port of the mold is able to be in fluid communication with the open-split of the electrically-conductive casing part.

[0028] In an embodiment of the present disclosure, the molding assembly also comprises a first connector member and a second connector member which are movable parallel relative to each other, all the first half-molds are connected to the first connector member and all the second half-molds are connected to the second connector member.

[0029] In an embodiment of the present disclosure, the first and second connector members are configured as racks having teeth on their opposing sides, and the molding assembly also comprises a rotatable gear which can be selectively rotated in opposing directions respectively around a rotational axis which is stationary relative to the first and second connector members, and the gear is configured to mesh with the teeth of both of the racks.

[0030] In an embodiment of the present disclosure, the system further comprising a conveying module by which the molding assembly is selectively fed or stopped in the vacuum chamber or the curing chamber.

[0031] Using the technical measures mentioned in the specification, it is more effective to manufacture the antenna split in the electrically-conductive casing part of the electronic device such that the connection strength between the antenna split and the casing part becomes more robust and that the electronic device’s casing part can have attractive appearance integrity and good liquid-proofing performance even after a long-term usage thereof or strong contact thereof with a hard object.

[0041] EMBODIMENTS

[0042] In the drawings, those features having the same functions or configured similarly are represented by the same reference numerals respectively.

[0043] In the context of the present disclose, an electronic device can be understood to refer to a smart phone, a tablet computer, a laptop computer, or a similar electronic device having a wireless communication function. Said electronic device is provided with a casing in which components of the electronic device can be installed. The casing is generally comprised of an electrically-conductive part, for example a metallic part or an aluminum-made part, or a titanium-made part or a stainless steel-made part, or a magnesium-alloy-made part, or any suitable combination thereof, for attractive appearance. In order to well achieve the wireless communication function, a split is formed in the part of the casing such that the components of the device can wireless communicate data with an external device. In place of a plastic material by molding as in the prior art, a glue according to the present disclosure is used in the casing part such that the split is filled directly with the glue and finally formed as an antenna split. It should be understood by a person skilled in the art that the split mentioned here  includes but is not limited to a slot, a slit, a slot, an elongated opening formed in the casing part of the electronic device. Moreover, the split can be straight, folded, curved, or other shaped in the casing part. Besides, the glue adopted in the present disclosure can be a single-component or two-component glue made of epoxy or polyurethane, and has a work life longer than 10 minutes and a viscosity lower than 20000 cps (10 s-1) . In a preferable embodiment, the viscosity of the glue is measured at 25  If the viscosity of the glue is too high, the glue can be heated such that its viscosity is lower than 20000 cps (10 s-1) .

[0044] Fig. 1 schematically illustrates a flow chart of a process according to an embodiment of the present disclosure for manufacturing an antenna split in a casing part of an electronic device using the glue. In the following explanation, the electronic device will be mentioned as a smart phone and the casing part will be mentioned as a phone casing part for non-limiting and illustrative purposes only. At step S10 of the process, a mold formed with an injection port is prepared and provided. According to the present disclosure, before preparing the mold, a phone casing part can be provided, which is machined with at least one open-split therein in advance. Here, the term “open-split” can be understood as a precursor of the antenna split and is not filled with the glue. The location of the open-split in the phone casing part mainly depends on signal performance design of the smart phone. At step S20 of the process, the phone casing part is releasably inserted into the mold formed with the injection port such that the injection port is in fluid communication with the open-split of the phone casing part after being held in place in the mold. At step S30 of the process, the glue in a liquid state is injected through the injection port into the open-split such that the open-split can be filled with the glue within the mold and the glue in the liquid state can be kept in the split by the mold. For example, the glue can be injected through the injection port by a glue injection device or machine well-known in the art. For instance, the glue injection device or machine can be understood as a device or machine which is operated manually or as a part of by a robot arm such that a glue can be discharged out selectively. It is found by the inventor of the present disclosure that during injection of the glue, air might be mixed into the glue and held as bubbles in the split. These bubbles will result in poor connection performance of an antenna split of the casing part after a curing phase which will be explained later, and thus have to be eliminated in advance. There, at step S40 of the process, any potential bubbles can be eliminated by vibration of the mold. The vibration of the mold will facilitate escaping of the bubbles from the liquid glue if they probably exist therein. In a preferred embodiment, the vibration of the mold is accomplished in a vacuum chamber. For example, the vacuum chamber can be configured to have an absolute pressure of about 10 –200 mBar, to encourage the bubbles to escape from the liquid glue more rapidly. For example, the mold together  with the casing part filled with the liquid glue can be secured on a vibration table driven by a vibration pump or an electric motor such that the table can be vibrated or shaken in various directions and / or at different frequencies as desired. At step S50 of the process, the applied liquid glue will undergo a curing phase. This curing is for example carried out by moving the mold into an oven such that the mold is heat therein for a predefined period and thus the glue is reliably secured together with the casing part to form the antenna split in the casing part. At step S60 of the process, the casing part already formed with the antenna split can be removed from the mold. Thereafter, if necessary, the casing part can undergo a CNC machining procedure such that it can be grounded and / or polished to have a smooth outer surface.

[0045] Fig. 2 is a block diagram schematically illustrating a system for manufacturing an antenna split in an electrically-conductive part of an electronic device according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. In the following explanation, the electronic device will be mentioned as a smart phone and the casing part will be mentioned as a phone casing part for non-limiting and illustrative purposes only. As shown by Fig. 2, the system generally comprises a molding module 100, a glue-injecting module 200, a conveying module 300, a de-bubbling chamber 400, and a curing chamber 500. The molding module 100 is configured to have a molding assembly 110 and a base 120 on which the molding assembly 110 is installed. For obtaining higher production efficiency, the molding assembly 110 is provided with a plurality of molds 111 (for example more than two molds 111) , each of which is configured to releasably receive and hold a metallic part of a smart phone casing provided with an open-split. The glue-injecting module 200 is configured to cooperate with the molding assembly 110 such that when the molds 111 have held the metallic parts, a glue in a liquid state can be injected through the glue-injecting module 200 into the open-splits respectively. For instance, the glue-injecting module 200 can have a glue storage container and a plurality of glue injection devices or machines s in fluid communication with the glue storage container via pipelines respectively. Therefore, a liquid glue storing in the container can be selectively fed through the pipelines into the injection devices or machines and discharged out of them respectively. For instance, the injection devices or machines are operatively coupled to robot arms such that the injection devices or machines can be selectively aligned with injection ports of the molds 111 respectively.

[0046] The conveying module 300 is configured to move the molding module 100 through the de-bubbling module 400 and / or the curing module 500 or selectively stop the molding module 100 therein respectively. As a non-limiting example, the conveying module 300 can comprise a conveyor belt (not shown) on which the base 120 can be placed and which is driven to circulate in opposite directions respectively and stop as required. The  de-bubbling chamber 400 is for example a vacuum chamber as mentioned above. The curing chamber 500 can be configured as an oven having a hollow space. The molding module 100 can be fed into or out of the hollow space whose internal temperature can be increased sufficient to cure the liquid glue.

[0047] In an alternative embodiment not shown there, the conveying module 300 can be dispensed with such that the molding assembly or the molding module can be manually conveyed.

[0048] Figs. 3A and 3B schematically illustrate an embodiment of the molding assembly 110 according to the present disclosure. In the illustrated embodiment, the molding assembly 110 comprises four molds 111 each of which is comprised of two half-molds 111a and 111b which are designed to be selectively separated from or closed to each other. The molding assembly 110 also comprises two parallel connector members 112a and 112b. A first connector member 112a of them is connected to all left half-molds 111a of the molds 111, and a second connector member 112b of them is connected to all right half-molds 111b of the molds 111 such that the left half-molds 111a can be moved together with the first connector member 112a and the right half-molds 111b can be moved together with the second connector member 112b. The parallel connector members 112a and 112b are configured as racks such that they are movable parallel relative to each other. Moreover, the racks have opposing sides on which teeth are formed respectively. The molding assembly 110 also comprises a rotatable gear 113 which can be selectively rotated in opposing directions respectively around a rotational axis which is stationary relative to the first and second connector members 112a and 112b. The gear 113 is configured to mesh with the teeth of both of the first and second connector members 112a and 112b respectively such that rotation of the gear 113 can move the first and second connector members 112a and 112b relative to each other, and thus the molding assembly 110 is selectively switchable between an open state and a closed state. In the open state as shown by Fig. 3A, the left half-mold and the right half-mold of each mold 111 can be separated from each other such that a metallic part of a smart phone casing formed with at least an open-split can be inserted one of the half-molds. In the closed state as shown by Fig. 3B, the left half-mold and the right -half mold of each mold 111 can be closed to each other such that an injection port, for example formed in the top of each mold 111 can be in fluid communication with the respective open-split. In the illustrated embodiment, the open-split is formed adjacent to an end of the casing part to be inserted into the mold 111. In an alternative embodiment, the first and second half-molds 111a and 111b can be articulated with each other for example at one lower end thereof.

[0049] Fig. 5A schematically illustrates a non-limiting example of one mold 111 which is  designed to have a left (or first) half-mold 111a and a right (or second) half-mold 111b openable or closable relative to each other. For instance, each of the left half-mold 111a and the right half-mold 111b is formed with a half hollow cavity such that when the mold 111 is closed, the two half hollow cavities together form a hollow cavity for receiving at least a portion of the smart phone casing part, for example one end of the smart phone casing part. In the top of any one of the left half-mold 111a and the right half-mold 111b or both of them, the injection port 114 is formed such that it can be in fluid communication with the open-split of a casing part of the smart phone already inserted in the mold 111, for example via an internal passage formed in an inner wall of the mold 111. Fig. 5B schematically illustrates that the mold 111 of Fig. 5A has received the casing part of the smart phone. It can be seen that the exposed injection port 114 on the top of the mold 111 enables it to be in fluid communication with the open-split 220 of the casing part 210. In an embodiment of the present disclosure, the casing part 210 can be held in the half-mold 111a, 111b or the mold 111 via a dedicated clamp well known in the mechanical art.

[0050] In another embodiment of the present disclosure, the left half-mold or the right half-mold of each mold 111 can be formed with a groove on opposite sides such that opposite sides of the respective casing part can be slid into the grooves of the mold 111 and held here in the open state of the molding assembly 110. Then, in the closed state of the molding assembly 110, the injection port of each mold 111 can be in fluid communication with the open-split formed in the respective casing part already held in the mold 111. Thereafter, the glue-injecting module 200 can be operated such that the liquid glue can be filled through the injection ports into the open-splits of the casing parts held in the molds 111 respectively.

[0051] For instance, a vibration mechanism 121 (such as a vibration pump) driven by an electric motor (not shown) is installed on the base 120 such that the molding assembly 110 is operatively coupled to the vibration mechanism. It is conceived by a person skilled in the art that the vibration mechanism 121 can be accomplished in any suitable manner known in the mechanism art. When the vibration mechanism 121 is driven, the molding assembly 110 can be vibrated or shaken in various directions and / or at different frequencies for a given period (such as from a second to an hour) . The de-bubbling chamber 400 or the vacuum chamber 400 is provided with a closable or openable inlet door and a closable or openable outlet door. Therefore, when the inlet door of the chamber 400 is open, the molding assembly 110 together with the base 120 can be fed into the chamber 400 by the conveying module 300 and can stay there for a given period during which the molding assembly 110 can be vibrated or shaken in various directions and / or at a given frequency. The vacuum chamber 400 can be configured to have an  absolute pressure of about 10 –200 mBar, to encourage the bubbles to escape from the liquid glue. In a preferred embodiment, only when the molding assembly 111 is within the vacuum chamber 400, the vibration mechanism is able to operate such that the molding assembly 111 is vibrated or shaken. In this case, the low air pressure in the vacuum chamber 400 will facilitate any bubbles probably mixed in the liquid glue to escape therefrom. Of course, it is conceived by a person skilled in the art that in an alternative embodiment the vacuum chamber 400 can be dispensed with such that the molding assembly 110 can be vibrated or shaken directly under ambient atmosphere.

[0052] After being vibrated or shaken, the molding assembly 111 can be conveyed into the curing chamber 500 in which the molding assembly 111 is heated such that the liquid glue kept and de-bubbled in the molds 111 is cured and finally the antenna splits can be generated in the casing parts. Thereafter, as the molding assembly 111 is conveyed out of the curing chamber 500 and cools down, the casting parts already provided with the antenna splits can be removed from the molds respectively after the rotatable gear 113 is operated to enable the molding assembly 111 to be in its open state. For facilitating de-molding, a mold releaser can be applied in the respective mold in advance. In an alternative or additional embodiment, each mold can be made of a metal and has a coating of Teflon on its inner wall. Alternatively, the mold can be made of a silicon rubber or a plastic material.

[0053] Although some specific embodiments and / or examples of the present disclosure are described here, they are given for illustrative purposes only and cannot be deemed to constrain the scope of the present disclosure in any way. Furthermore, it should be understood by a skilled person in the art that the embodiments and / or examples described here can be combined with each other. Without departing from the spirit and scope of the present disclosure, various replacements, modifications, and alternations can be carried out.
