Abstract

Systems and methods for predictive handover (PHO) are discussed herein. For example, a user equipment (UE) receives, from a base station, a configuration message including a handover mode configuration for a handover mode that uses increased measurement gaps as compared to a pre-handover mode of a pre-handover mode configuration. Then, the UE identifies a PHO event that predicts a measurement reporting event using an artificial intelligence (AI) / machine learning (ML) model. In response to identifying the PHO event, the UE switches from a pre-handover mode to a handover mode. If UE then detects the measurement reporting event according to the handover mode configuration of the handover mode, it performs handover. If the measurement reporting event is not detected, the UE may fall back to the pre-handover mode configuration. Optionally, the UE may indicate to a base station that it has identified the PHO event.

Description

USER EQUIPMENT CENTRIC PREDICTIVE DYNAMIC CONFIGURATION WITH HANDOVER MODETECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] This application relates generally to wireless communication systems, including the implementation of an artificial intelligence (AI)  / machine learning (ML) model for handover.BACKGROUND

[0002] Wireless mobile communication technology uses various standards and protocols to transmit data between a base station and a wireless communication device. Wireless communication system standards and protocols can include, for example, 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Long Term Evolution (LTE) (e.g., 4G) , 3GPP New Radio (NR) (e.g., 5G) , and Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11 standard for Wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN) (commonly known to industry groups as ) .

[0003] As contemplated by the 3GPP, different wireless communication systems' standards and protocols can use various radio access networks (RANs) for communicating between a base station of the RAN (which may also sometimes be referred to generally as a RAN node, a network node, or simply a node) and a wireless communication device known as a user equipment (UE) . 3GPP RANs can include, for example, Global System for Mobile communications (GSM) , Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE) RAN (GERAN) , Universal Terrestrial Radio Access Network (UTRAN) , Evolved Universal Terrestrial Radio Access Network (E-UTRAN) , and / or Next-Generation Radio Access Network (NG-RAN) .

[0004] Each RAN may use one or more radio access technologies (RATs) to perform communication between the base station and the UE. For example, the GERAN implements GSM and / or EDGE RAT, the UTRAN implements Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS) RAT or other 3GPP RAT, the E-UTRAN implements LTE RAT (sometimes simply referred to as LTE) , and NG-RAN implements NR RAT (sometimes referred to herein as 5G RAT, 5G NR RAT, or simply NR) . In certain deployments, the E-UTRAN may also implement NR RAT. In certain deployments, NG-RAN may also implement LTE RAT.

[0005] A base station used by a RAN may correspond to that RAN. One example of an E-UTRAN base station is an Evolved Universal Terrestrial Radio Access Network (E-UTRAN) Node B (also commonly denoted as evolved Node B, enhanced Node B, eNodeB, or eNB) . One example of an NG-RAN base station is a next generation Node B (also sometimes referred to as a g Node B or gNB) .

[0006] A RAN provides its communication services with external entities through its connection to a core network (CN) . For example, E-UTRAN may utilize an Evolved Packet Core (EPC) while NG-RAN may utilize a 5G Core Network (5GC) .

[0018] FIG. 10 illustrates a system for performing signaling between a wireless device and a network device, according to embodiments disclosed herein.DETAILED DESCRIPTION

[0019] Various embodiments are described with regard to a UE. However, reference to a UE is merely provided for illustrative purposes. The example embodiments may be utilized with any electronic component that may establish a connection to a network and is configured with the hardware, software, and / or firmware to exchange information and data with the network. Therefore, the UE as described herein is used to represent any appropriate electronic component.

[0020] In some wireless communication systems, certain use cases (e.g., extended reality (XR) cases) may use adaptive UE triggered configurations, such as cell specific artificial intelligence (AI)  / machine learning (ML) model updates, cell-UE measurements and antenna / beam configurations.

[0021] Additionally, while reducing sizes of measurement gaps (MG) used by the UE may improve latency, relatively larger measurement gaps may facilitate more reliable handover operation (as decreasing measurement gaps may degrade the performance of handover operations) . A balance between a reduction in measurement gaps for various use cases and a relatively high measurement gap for handover operations may therefore be considered in order to increase performance of both aspects as to further improve latency and throughput.

[0022] Existing rule-based mobility procedures are reactive and network centric by design. Thus, the UE may not have enough time to adapt to channel variations and / or network variations that may occur in current mechanisms. Additionally, the network may not be aware of UE mobility and UE contextual information (e.g., speed, location, direction) . In some cases, the UE may be configured with fixed settings optimized for an upcoming potential handover that may occur at any time.

[0023] Embodiments disclosed herein introduce the use of handover modes at the UE including a pre-handover mode and handover mode, where the handover mode is defined as a UE being close to an (e.g., predicted) upcoming handover process (e.g., by ΔT seconds) , thus accounting for the upcoming handover. The pre-handover mode 102 is defined as a UE not being close to an upcoming (e.g., predicted) handover process (or not in handover mode 104) , thus not having to account or use resources for the upcoming handover. Additionally, details on one or more UE configurations that are updated based on the current handover mode (e.g. measurement gap configuration, beam forming type or antenna configuration settings) are discussed herein. Further, embodiments discussed herein provide details on an AI / ML model with UE contextual information as an input / training input that detects handover mode switch (i.e., from a pre-handover mode 102 to a handover mode 104) and a time when the UE switches over to the handover mode 104 with corresponding  configuration parameters being updated based on the handover mode parameters and / or inputs to improve handover key performance indicators (KPIs) (e.g., radio link failure, ping ponging effects, reducing handover failure, finding cells for improved connectivity) . Additionally discussed herein are details on how a UE may stay in a handover mode 104 after handover occurs (if there is any handover) for a certain amount of time (e.g., ΔT2) as configured by the network.

[0024] FIG. 1 illustrates an example handover from a serving cell to a neighboring cell using a pre-handover mode 102 and a handover mode 104 with reference to reference signal received power (RSRP) measurement values, according to embodiments herein. Initially, in a pre-handover mode 102, the serving cell RSRP 106 is high as compared to the neighboring cell RSRP 108 as the UE is attached to the serving cell. While in pre-handover mode 102 the UE may not be accounting for any upcoming handover. At time t -ΔT 110, a predictive handover (PHO) mode switch may occur. As part of the PHO mode switch, the UE may switch from the pre-handover mode 102 to a handover mode 104 based on a prediction by an AI / ML model at the UE that a handover is upcoming (that a measurement reporting event corresponding to a handover is upcoming) . As part of the switch, corresponding configuration parameters are updated based on the handover mode requirements and or input (e.g., a handover condition for handover according to the handover mode 104 becomes actively monitored by the UE) . As illustrated, while in the handover mode 104, the serving cell RSRP 106 decreases and the neighboring cell RSRP 108 increases until a handover condition of the handover mode for handover to the neighboring cell occurs at time t 112. At time t 112, handover occurs and the UE is attached to the neighboring cell as opposed to the serving cell, thus the serving cell RSRP 106 decreases to zero and the neighboring cell RSRP 108 increases and levels out.

[0025] FIG. 2 illustrates an example of PHO using an AI / ML model to predict a handover event for handover mode switch from a pre-handover mode to a handover mode, according to embodiments herein.

[0026] In some embodiments discussed herein, a UE 202 may use an AI / ML model that is located at the UE 202 to predict an upcoming handover (e.g., predict a measurement reporting event triggering handover) for handover mode switch from a pre-handover mode to a handover mode. The UE 202 may receive various RSRP measurements 206 from various base stations as the UE 202 is moving (e.g., has a certain speed value) from the coverage of a first base station 204 to the coverage of a second base station 210 to the coverage of a third base station 208 and so on. In some examples, the AI / ML model at the UE 202 may use UE 202 contextual information to predict the upcoming handover for  handover mode switch including, but is not limited to, speed of the UE 202, direction of movement of the UE 202, location of the UE 202, quality of service (QoS) flows of the UE 202, and / or applications of the UE 202.

[0027] In some wireless communication system mechanisms, a UE may have a fixed mobility / handover mode configuration irrespective of its mobility context (e.g., location, speed, and / or direction) . For example, the UE may be configured to measure a reference signal periodically (e.g., every 20 milliseconds (ms) with a narrow beam) in the case of intra-frequency handover, where the periodic measurement (e.g., every 20 ms) reduces overall throughput and latency as data transmission may need to be foregone. However, some embodiments discussed herein (e.g., in various extended reality (XR) cases) may introduce the use of and therefore the benefit of using a more dynamic use of configurations (e.g., pre-handover mode configuration and handover mode configuration) that may rely in part on UE contextual information (e.g., location, speed, directions, type of application, QoS) . In some cases, the UE may be configured with reduced measurement gaps (or aperiodic measurement gaps) and / or with a wider antenna beam pattern until the UE is close to handover (i.e., near a cell edge) . Additional avenues for adjustment within such configurations may include, for example, serving cell specific AI / ML model updates, antenna and beam configurations, compute offloading to edge servers, and / or de-activation of a processing heavy improved handover procedures.

[0028] Additionally, in some cases, the UE may be configured with increased measurements and / or with a narrower beam pattern for the best beam and cell selection when there is an imminent handover. Additional avenues for such configurations may include, for example, activated features such as radio resource management (RRM) predictions, AI / ML model updates for a target cell, antenna and beam configurations, proactive computer and caching resource updates, proactive bandwidth allocation, activation of improved handover procedures to reduce unnecessary handovers, pre-PHO resume time and conditions, and / or service activation (e.g., sensing) in service based architecture. In addition, the UE may be configured with the amount of time it should stay in the handover mode after a handover is completed.

[0029] Predictive Handover

[0030] In some embodiments, a handover mode may be introduced and defined as a UE-centric AI / ML model-initiated UE configuration which is designed for upcoming / imminent handover or handover that is predicted to occur soon. The network may configure the UE to  have two different configuration modes including a pre-handover mode and handover mode through, for example, a radio resource control (RRC) reconfiguration message.

[0031] Additionally, in certain embodiments, UE context dependent pre-PHO RRC configurations / conditions (e.g., pre-handover mode configurations) may include that the UE is configured with settings that optimize the UE for non-mobility related KPIs when the UE is not in the handover mode (and in some cases additionally that the UE is not expected to switch over to the handover mode within a given time-frame) .

[0032] The UE may also be configured with settings such that it is also optimized for the handover mode.

[0033] In some embodiments, an AI / ML based PHO indicator may be introduced. For example, the UE may switch its configuration when the AI / ML model indicates PHO, including the PHO switch-over time. Optionally, the UE may inform the PHO event to the network by sending an indication message including a quantized predicted PHO switch-over time in a PHO resource in a MAC CE message, in an indication message transmitted over a physical uplink control channel (PUCCH) , a radio resource control (RRC) message, or in user assistance information (UAI) .

[0034] Additionally, in some embodiments, post-PHO configuration switching may be introduced. The UE may switch configurations to a configuration which is optimized for handover mode (i.e., a handover mode configuration for the handover mode) . The UE may stay in this handover mode for a duration of time (e.g., ΔT seconds) , until the time that an actual measurement reporting event is detected and handover is correspondingly initiated. It should be understood that the duration of time may be determined by the UE, using the AI / ML model or indicated by the network in, for example, the RRC reconfiguration message. Further, if the duration of time is predicted by the UE, the UE may indicate the time duration to the network.

[0035] FIG. 3 illustrates an example flow diagram 300 of predictive handover mode switching, according to embodiments herein. Initially, a UE 302 transmits user data 310 to the serving cell 304 and the serving cell 304, similarly, transmits user data 310 to a user plane function (UPF) 308. Then, the serving cell 304 and the neighboring cells 306 share mobility and control and PHO information 312 as determined by an access and mobility management function (AMF) . Subsequently, the serving cell 304 sends an RRC connection reconfiguration 314 message to the UE 302 with a predictive handover (PHO) configuration and current handover (HO) configuration. It should be understood that, in some cases, current HO configurations may be encompassed by a pre-handover mode configuration as  the UE may remain in a pre-handover mode with no upcoming handover. In response, the UE 302 may send a PHO configuration complete 316 message to the serving cell 304 indicating that the UE is configured for PHO. When the PHO configuration complete 316 message is sent, the UE enters or is already in pre-handover mode 318. It should be understood that in some examples the entering the pre-handover mode 318 encompasses UE 302 making configuration changes and UE 302 setting changes preparatory for a later mode switch to a handover mode. However, in some other examples, the pre-handover mode 318 may either be the current mode of the UE 302 where no settings or configurations are changed preparatory for a later mode switch to the handover mode.

[0036] Then, the UE 302, using an AI / ML model, may identify a PHO event 320 at a time t -ΔT that predicts a measurement reporting event 328, where the time t is the (predicted) time of the measurement reporting event 328 and time ΔT is the time between the measurement reporting event 328 and the corresponding PHO event 320. It should be understood that the time ΔT may also be predicted by the AI / ML model at the UE 302. Optionally, the UE 302 may send an indication 322 of the PHO event 320 to the serving cell 304 with or without a PHO indicator for the PHO event 320. In some such optional cases, the network may configure the target cell to increase available bandwidth as to allow for a smoother handover, or the network may indicate to the target cell to start a sensing procedure before handover is to be completed. Additionally, the network may optimize network measurements or network settings in view of the pre-handover mode 318 to handover mode 326 switch / the predicted measurement reporting event 328. Further, in this optional step, the serving cell 304 may respond with a medium access control (MAC) control element (CE) (MAC CE) indication 324 message, a an indication 324 sent over a physical downlink control channel (PDCCH) , or an RRC indication 324 message indicating to the UE 302 to switch to a handover mode, or to indicate to the UE 302 that the network has changed network settings according to the intended switch to the handover mode 326 (due to the PHO event 320) , or further to indicate to the UE 302, settings it should be configured with while in handover mode 326.

[0037] The UE 302 may then switch from the pre-handover mode 318 to a handover mode 326 according to various cases. In some cases, the UE 302 may switch from the pre-handover mode 318 to the handover mode 326 based an indication 324 from the serving cell 304. In some other cases, the UE 302 may switch from the pre-handover mode 318 to the handover mode 326 on its own (i.e., autonomously) without an indication from the serving cell 304. After switching to the handover mode 326, the UE 302 may detect the  measurement reporting event 328 (e.g., that the measurement reporting event 328 has actually occurred) and correspondingly perform handover.

[0038] Subsequently, the UE may send measurement reports 330 to the serving cell 304 based on the completed the handover and accordingly, the serving cell 304 and the neighboring cells 306 may perform cell selection and admission control 332. Additionally, the UE 302 and the serving cell 304 may perform a RAN HO complete communication procedure 334. Then, the flow diagram 300 ends similarly to how it initially began with user data 336 being transmitted from the UE 302 to the UPF 308, with the system taking a state that allows for the flow diagram 300 to begin again corresponding to a subsequent PHO. It should be understood that, in some cases, the UE 302 may remain in the handover mode 326 for a duration of time that extends past the point that the measurement reporting event 328 has been detected and handover has been performed.

[0039] It should also be understood that the pre-handover mode and the handover mode may use explicit signaling, and that the UE 302 may switch between these two mode configurations (i.e., the pre-handover mode configuration and the handover mode configuration) using its own intelligence (e.g., AI / ML model) before an actual handover process is initiated. The UE may stay in the handover mode for a duration of time (e.g., ΔT) , as, for example, predicted by the AI / ML model or indicated by the network and each configuration (i.e., the pre-handover mode configuration and the handover mode configuration) may be per target cell or more generally per base station.

[0040] In certain embodiments, a UE vendor may train the AI / ML model to identify a PHO event with the UE's contextual information included in the settings and conditions that a network may share with the UE vendor. The network may also share environmental information of the UE (e.g., urban environment including highways and buildings) , the location of the UE (e.g., areas that have high handover failure such as sporting events and museums) , configuration / conditions of the UE (e.g. range of speed) that may be useful to identify the PHO event. Additionally, the network may share the contextual UE information for training of the AI / ML model as, in some examples, the UE may encounter issues which may need multiple UEs trained and tested with the common network data. In some cases, the UE is configured by the network with parameters for a proactive measurement reporting event trigger for a set of cells and their set of neighboring cells and the configuration may include, for example, an AI / ML model identifier (ID) , parameter settings for an AI / ML model such as the UE's speed, location, direction, RSRP values, and resource type for measurements performed by the UE. It should be understood that this information may be shared with the UE via the RRC reconfiguration message discussed herein.

[0041] Additionally, in some embodiments, the network may configure the UE for PHO use (i.e., with a pre-handover mode configuration and a handover mode configuration) through an RRC connection reconfiguration message. The configurations may include, a pre-PHO configuration (apre-handover mode configuration) to reduce the measurement gap in order to increase throughput, reduce latency and reduce power consumption. The configurations may also define a PHO indicator that may be reported to the network to indicate a configuration change corresponding to a PHO event. The complimentary signaling may include, for example, a predicted time of the expected mobility related event, a cell ID of PHO detected cell, and / or logged measurements (if any) . The configuration may also include post-PHO (i.e., handover mode configuration) information as to increase the measurement gap for better cell selection. The complimentary features may include what / when to report measurements, cancelation conditions, activated features such as RRM predictions, AI / ML model updates, and pre-PHO resume time and / or conditions. In addition, the UE may be configured with the amount of time it should stay in a handover mode after handover process (i.e., after handover has occurred) .

[0042] With reference to embodiments discussed herein, beneficially, both the network and the UE may be aware of the UE's contextual information (e.g., the UE's mobility) . The network may configure the UE such that the UE is not constrained by mobility related parameters when the UE is not in handover mode. Additionally, both the network and the UE have more flexibility for network optimization. The network may schedule the UE more often, as the measurement gaps are reduced and the network may benefit from context based UE intelligence for the configuration change instead of depending on fixed events as done in current wireless communication systems. In some instances, the UE may retain measurement efficiency, may save power, and / or may benefit from increased throughput and / or reduced latency due to the use of a pre-handover mode and a handover mode discussed herein. For example, these modes may be more optimal than current A2-A3 events, because the pre-handover mode and the handover mode configurations discussed herein may be UE-specific and designed to be closer to handover by a duration of time (e.g., ΔT seconds) relative to current RSRP threshold or rule procedures) .

[0043] Embodiments discussed herein additionally introduce robustness in the case of prediction errors if a prediction is earlier than a duration of time (e.g., ΔT) . The UE may switch to the handover mode early which may result in reduced performance gains from non-mobility related configurations. If the prediction is later than the duration of time discussed herein (e.g., ΔT) , it may lead to reduced performance gains from mobility related configurations. Additionally, the AI / ML model for the PHO indicator discussed herein may  consider traditional mobility KPIs for the optimization of the PHO AI / ML model including that handover failures may be reduced as the handovers may be either occur too early, occur too late, are ping-pong handovers, and / or have a short time of stay.

[0044] In some embodiments, the UE may determine that a handover to a target cell may be possibly necessary in the future predicted by an AI / ML model based on signal measurements and user information used to train and as inputs for the AI / ML model. For example, the signal measurements may include source and target base station signal strength measurements (e.g., RSRP) . The user information may include mobility information (e.g., speed of motion, and / or heading) , and / or application information (QoE) . Further, signal measurements and user information may be applied to an AI / ML model (i.e., a machine learning algorithm) to determine that a handover to a target base station may be needed at a future time. Additionally, network information (e.g., network deployment information, network loading status) may also be considered. The network information discussed may be indicated by the base station, to the UE, via a downlink (DL) message.

[0045] In certain embodiments, the UE, upon the determination of the possible future handover, may transmit a signal to the serving base station. The transmitted signal may include the predicted future time of handover and the confidence level of the prediction. In some examples, the UE may autonomously switch modes (i.e., from a pre-handover mode to a handover mode) and the UE may send an uplink (UL) message to the network to notify the network of the switch. In some other examples the network may indicate to the UE, to switch modes where the initial UL message from the UE includes a recommendation to switch handover modes.

[0046] In some embodiments, the UE, upon determination of the possible future handover, may switch to a different configuration (i.e., from a pre-handover mode to a handover mode or a handover mode to a pre-handover mode) . In some examples, this switch may be done implicitly based on previously configured parameters provided by the network. The previously configured parameters may include the time instance for configuration switch upon handover prediction. In some other examples, in response to the transmitted signal to the serving cell, the UE may be provided by the serving cell with a new configuration or an identifier of a different pre-configured configuration. In yet some other examples, the UE may switch to a different configuration explicitly, and communicate the change to the serving cell in a future signal transmission (e.g., the UE may indicate a different antenna configuration used for reference signal measurements after the future handover prediction when reporting measurement results to the base station) .

[0047] As discussed herein, in some embodiments, the UE has contextual information such as location, speed, direction, and / or sensing, which are useful to predict upcoming mobility event. In certain embodiments, a proactive handover trigger (i.e., an indication to switch from a pre-handover mode to a handover mode) may be identified by an AI / ML model running at the UE. In some cases, the AI / ML model may be global, per local area, per serving cell, per trajectory, or per serving-neighboring cell pair. Additionally, the AI / ML model may use radio measurements and UE specific data. In some instances, the AI / ML model may also be used together with the other models such as RRM prediction, trajectory prediction, accelerometer prediction, and / or location prediction. The AI / ML model may also be designed to work in specific conditions such as for a range of speed, range of measurement, and / or range of location. Further, the network may configure the UE with PHO through an RRC connection reconfiguration message which includes, for example, configurations (i.e., a pre-handover mode configuration) before the PHO trigger predicted by the AI / ML model, how to report PHO to the network and what to do after PHO is completed.

[0048] In some embodiments, the pre-handover mode configuration may be configured by the network. For example, the network may configure the UE, in the pre-handover mode configuration, to skip some of channel measurements (or to have traffic dependent aperiodic measurements) and reporting such as RSRP and / or reference signal received quality (RSRQ) . The network may also configure the UE, in the pre-handover mode configuration, with the list of neighboring cells and frequency bands to monitor for PHO. In some cases, the network may configure the UE, using the pre-handover mode configuration, to disable some features until the PHO event is predicted by the AI / ML such as disabling RRM prediction and / or interference prediction. Additionally, the network may provide, in the pre-handover mode configuration, a prediction model, to the UE, or configure the UE to use a particular model, and / or specify the inputs to the model.

[0049] In certain embodiments, a PHO reporting configuration (i.e., the indication message sent to the network when a measurement reporting event is predicted) may be configured by the network for the UE for reporting of the predicted measurement reporting event to the network. For example, the network may configure the UE, in the PHO reporting configuration, to report the predicted measurement reporting event when the AI / ML model predicts that there is an upcoming handover. The report, included in the PHO reporting configuration may include an indicator (e.g., 1-bit in size) to indicate that a PHO condition is satisfied and may further include a quantized expected handover time, a predicted duration of time by the AI / ML model between the predicted measurement reporting event  and the detected actual measurement reporting event (e.g., ΔT) , and a list of PHO triggered neighboring cells.

[0050] The report, that is sent to the network, may further include some of the historical channel measurements of serving / neighboring cells. The historical measurements may be used for network intelligence at network side. The report may further include the type of PHO if there are multiple PHO indicators (e.g., PHO to indicate too early or late handovers, QoS degradation etc. ) . For example, to predict the multiple PHO indicators, the training data, used to train the AI / ML model would need to be generated explicitly for these cases. The report may further include AI / ML model (s) or AI / ML model IDs of some of the AI / ML features which may be specific to potential target cells for early preparation such as caching AI / ML models to a modem from an application processor (e.g., cell specific channel state information (CSI) compression / beam management (BM) models) . The report may further include the expected KPIs and futures from target cells such as computational information, storage information, wireless communication system features, the confidence level of the prediction, the new measurement configuration chosen by the UE for a post-PHO phase (i.e., in handover mode) , and / or if multiple measurement configurations are pre-configured or available. In some more optimized network aware UE configuration change alternatives, the UE may report the PHO to the network.

[0051] In some embodiments, a post-PHO configuration (i.e., handover mode configuration) may be configured by the network for the UE to switch to after the upcoming measurement reporting event is predicted. For example, the UE may switch AI / ML models for a UE and network interaction. The UE may change beam patterns and / or the UE may initiate collecting mobility / handover related intelligence. Additionally, the UE may measure reference signals with an increased frequency.

[0052] In some examples, the network may configure the UE with one or more of the following settings through an RRC reconfiguration message per target cell for use during the handover mode. The network may initiate current and fast conditional handover (FCHO) processes by sending candidate cells and related configurations to the UE. In some cases, the network may ignore the PHO request and reconfigure the UE back to pre-PHO configuration (i.e., the pre-handover mode configuration) and / or the network may configure the UE to predict future RRMs and / or to select an AI / ML model for the target cell. Additionally, the network may send a new configuration (i.e., the handover mode configuration) , to the UE, through a MAC CE message or in an indication message transmitted over the PDCCH. Alternatively, the network may send an indication, to the UE,  for the UE to select a configuration (i.e., either the pre-handover mode configuration or the handover mode configuration) within the RRC reconfiguration message.

[0053] In some cases, the UE may fall back to the pre-handover mode configuration discussed herein if the upcoming conditions for handover mode are not valid such as the UE may change the direction of movement, speed or any other UE contextual information discussed herein. In such cases, the UE may inform the network about switching back to (i.e., falling back to) the pre-handover mode configuration.

[0054] FIG. 4 illustrates an example UE-based flow diagram 400 of configuration, activation and deactivation procedures for PHO, according to embodiments herein.

[0055] The flow diagram 400 begins with the UE and the base station being configured 402 for predictive handover (i.e., the base station configures and transmits the pre-handover mode configuration and the handover mode configuration to the UE) , with the UE starting in the pre-handover mode configuration 404. Then, using the AI / ML model 406 at the UE, a measurement reporting event is predicted (i.e., PHO event is detected 408) . If the measurement reporting event is not predicted (i.e., a PHO event is not detected) the AI / ML model 406 at the UE may again try to predict another measurement reporting event. If a measurement reporting event is predicted (i.e., a PHO event is detected 408) , optionally, an indication may be sent to the base station 416 including an indication of the PHO event. Then, if the measurement reporting event is predicted, the UE switches to the handover mode configuration 410. In some cases, the UE may perform handover, according to measurement-based handover events 414 with an indication of handover sent to the base station 416.

[0056] While in the handover mode configuration 410, the UE may also check if the conditions for UE fallback been met 412. If the conditions for UE fallback have been met, the UE may switch back to the pre-handover mode configuration 404 (e.g., instead of performing a handover) . If the conditions for fallback have not been met, the UE may ignore the fallback conditions and continue to attempt handover (e.g., according to the measurement-based handover events 414 used by the UE while in the handover mode) . Fallback conditions may include, for example, if a handover has failed, if a previously predicted measurement reporting event is not actually detected while in the handover mode, and / or if the AI / ML model determines that the UE should fall back to the pre-handover mode. In some examples, an indication of the conditions for fallback being met (or not being met) may be sent to the base station 416.

[0057] FIG. 5 illustrates an example flow diagram 500 of predictive handover mode switching with more than one cell, according to embodiments herein.

[0058] In certain embodiments, the UE may be configured for FCHO. Instead of preparing one target cell for PHO as discussed herein, in some embodiments, multiple candidate target cells are prepared for PHO in advance by the network. Instead of applying a HO command as in current mechanisms, the UE may wait for condition to be met before executing the stored handover command.

[0059] With PHO, as discussed herein, the UE may be configured for a pre-handover mode and a handover mode on a per-neighboring-cell basis. In some instances, this may reduce overall network resource reservation at the candidate cell for FCHO because each candidate cell may be configured at different times depending on the UE contextual information (e.g., mobility, direction, or speed) . Additionally, this enables the UE to change its configuration (s) on a per-neighboring-cell basis (e.g., increase measurement gaps for the PHO detected for an individual neighboring cell) . Additionally, the UE may inform the network if a handover mode for a neighboring cell is not valid anymore so that neighboring cell and serving cell are aware of the configuration change back to the pre-handover mode.

[0060] For example, flow diagram 500 includes signaling for predictive handover including a UE 502, a serving cell 504, a first neighboring cell 506, a second neighboring cell 508 and a UPF 510. It should be understood that this flow diagram 500 is for example only and signaling may include one, two, or more than two neighboring cells. The flow diagram 500 begins with user data 512 being transmitted between the UE 502 and the serving cell 504 and the serving cell 504 and the second neighboring cell 508. Next the serving cell 504, the first neighboring cell 506, and the second neighboring cell 508 share mobility and control and PHO information 514 as determined by an AMF. Then, the serving cell 504 sends an RRC connection reconfiguration message 516 to the UE 502 that may include, for example, the pre-handover mode configuration, the handover mode configuration and an indication of an AI / ML model. In response, the UE 502 may send a configuration complete message 518 to the serving cell 504 indicating that the PHO configuration is complete. Then, the UE 502, if not already in pre-handover mode 520, enters pre-handover mode 520 according to the pre-handover mode configuration received in the RRC connection reconfiguration message 516. Subsequently, an AI / ML model, at the UE 502, may be used to identify an upcoming PHO event 522 for the first neighboring cell 506. Optionally, the UE 502 may send a PHO indication message 524 to the serving cell 504 indicating that an upcoming measurement reporting event has been predicted for the first neighboring cell 506. The serving cell may then send a PHO request 526 to the first  neighboring cell 506 and receive a response PHO request acknowledgement 528. Then, still optionally, the serving cell 504 may send a MAC CE indication message 530 or an indication message 530 transmitted over a PDCCH to the UE 502 indicating to the UE 502 to switch to a handover mode for the first neighboring cell 506.

[0061] Accordingly, the UE 502 may switch to a first handover mode for the first neighboring cell 532 based on the optionally received indication message 530 from the serving cell 504 or based on a determination made by the UE 502 to switch to a first handover mode for the first neighboring cell 532. The UE 502 may, then, using the AI / ML model, at the UE, identify an upcoming PHO event 534 for a second neighboring cell 508. If predicted, similarly to the first neighboring cell 506, optionally, the UE 502 may send a PHO indication message 536 to the serving cell 504 indicating that an upcoming measurement reporting event has been predicted for the second neighboring cell 508. The serving cell may then send a PHO request 538 to the second neighboring cell 508 and receive a response PHO request acknowledgement 540. Then, still optionally, the serving cell 504 may send a MAC CE indication message 542 or an indication message 542 transmitted over a PDCCH to the UE 502 indicating to the UE 502 to switch to a second handover mode for the second neighboring cell 508. Accordingly, the UE 502 may switch to a second handover mode for the second neighboring cell 544 based on the optionally received indication message 542 from the serving cell 504 or based on a determination made by the UE 502 to switch to a first handover mode for the first neighboring cell 532. Note that the UE may switch from the first handover mode to the second handover mode without ever performing a handover to the first neighboring cell (as illustrated) .

[0062] After switching to the second handover mode for the second neighboring cell 544, the UE 502 may detect a measurement reporting event 546 (for the second neighboring cell) and perform handover. Subsequently, the UE 502 may send measurement reports 548 to the serving cell 504 corresponding to the handover and accordingly, the serving cell 504 and the first neighboring cell 506 may perform cell selection and admission control 550. Additionally, the UE 502 and the serving cell 504 may perform a RAN HO complete communication procedure 552. Then, the flow diagram 500 ends similarly to how it initially began with user data 554 being transmitted from the UE 502 to the first neighboring cell 506, with the system taking a state that allows for the flow diagram 500 to begin again corresponding to a subsequent PHO. It should be understood that, in some cases, the UE 502 may remain in first handover mode for the first neighboring cell 532 or second handover mode for the second neighboring cell 544 for a duration of time that extends past the point  that the measurement reporting event 546 has been detected and handover has been performed.
