Using spanning tree protocol (STP) to enhance layer-2 network topology maps

Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) data is obtained via network switch (SNMP) queries to enhance identification of switch-to-switch links in Layer-2 mapping. In particular, by analyzing the STP data, ambiguity in determining switch uplink ports may be reduced. Specifically, the STP data can be used in conjunction with other topography data to provide Layer-2 connectivity for nodes on a network topology. Layer-2 address mapping tables are collected from a topology mapping, and STP data is collected, along with address translation tables (ARP) tables. Using this information, switches are identified using Layer-2 address tables. The STP data can be correlated by comparing data in switches, identifying switch ports directly connected to other switch ports, and eliminating direct switch-to-switch port connections from consideration for further Layer-2 node mappings.

Filtering of map topology based on network discovery characteristics

Embodiments of the present application enable a user to map a network topology and to then dynamically filter the map display by hiding or showing nodes based on discovery characteristics, such as Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) status, Active Directory (AD) Domain Controllers (DC) status, group membership status, etc. to allow customization of maps views. In particular, a topology mapping is formed by collecting topology data of a network and storing this topology data. Filtering criteria are received from a user, and the stored topology data is filtered using this received filtering criteria. The filtered topology data is then displayed to the user.

Multi-topology mapping method of virtual network

The invention provides a multi-topology mapping method of a virtual network. The method comprises four subalgorithms which carry out optimization on random-type (default), star-type, ring-type and tree-type topologies respectively. When a virtual network request arrives, a system can recognize the topology of the request by a value of a variable TOPO (Topoisomerase) and calls corresponding subalgorithms. According to the mapping method, since the subalgorithms fully utilize the characteristics of the corresponding topology structures, the use efficiency of bottom-layer physical network resources is greatly improved, and the income and expenditure ratio of mapping is increased. Simultaneously, a new topology subalgorithm also can be added into the multi-topology mapping method according to a similar mode. The method provided by the invention is applicable to networks such as experimental networks and provider networks and the like which have used or are going to use a network virtualization technology to carry out network separation, resource management and scheduling or customized service provision. The method has the characteristics of low link mapping complexity, high success rate of virtual-network mapping request and strong extendibility and the like.

Method and system for network management with platform-independent protocol interface for discovery and monitoring processes

A method, system, apparatus, and computer program product is presented for management of a distributed data processing system. An action at a target device is requested, and the completion of the action depends upon communication protocol operations on a set of devices along a logical route through the distributed data processing system. A set of supported protocols that are common to the set of devices along the logical route are identified, and a subset of supported protocols in the set of supported protocols that can be used to complete the action is then identified. An allowable supported protocol is selected for the action based on the type of requested action, after which the requesting application may use the action in accordance with the selected allowable supported protocol, e.g., to monitor or discover the target device. A topology mapping is used to derive an endpoint-to-endpoint route for completing the requested action. A comparison of assigned priorities of each allowable supported protocol may be performed to choose the selected allowable supported protocol.

Automated network to SAN topology linkage

Collection of topology mapping linkage information between a Storage Area Network (“SAN”) and a transparent interconnecting transport network is at least partially automated. Physical topology information is gathered by detecting use of a physical path between a port of a first SAN device and a port of a second SAN device logically proximate to the transport network. This may be accomplished by discovering World Wide Names of end-points in a Fibre Channel SAN, and discovering Media Access Control addresses of end-points in an Ethernet SAN. The discovered physical topology information is then employed with known transport network logical topology information to determine which logical path or paths are associated with the physical path, i.e., to generate a mapping.
