Abstract
Description
[0001] Adhesive label for application to a lateral surface of a cylindrical body and method for producing an adhesive label
[0002] The invention relates to an adhesive label for application to a lateral surface of a cylindrical body, in particular a cylindrical plastic body, with a film adhesive material and a laminating film.
[0003] Furthermore, the invention relates to a method for producing such an adhesive label.
[0004] Modern product packaging typically features labels displaying a variety of information. In addition to product-related information, labels also feature elaborate print images, allowing for effective product presentation. State-of-the-art adhesive labels are used for product packaging labeling. These labels consist of a film adhesive material laminated with a thin backing film. In the case of cylindrical containers with a small radius or a low mandrel, such as plastic tubes for effervescent tablets, delamination of the backing film is regularly observed at the seam of the adhesive label because the adhesion of the backing film is insufficient to counteract the tension between the backing film and the film adhesive material. In the case discussed here, small radii refer to radii of approximately 1 cm.This effect is enhanced by additional printing or varnishing with UV inks on the outward-facing side of the laminating film. Furthermore, practice has shown that the inks used in the state-of-the-art technology are not sufficiently abrasion-resistant.
[0005] In addition, conventional adhesive labels are not suitable for meeting special customer requests such that the surface of the adhesive labels is fully pre-matted and partially printed with a glossy UV varnish.
[0006] The object of the invention is therefore to propose an adhesive label for application to the outer surface of a cylindrical body and a method for producing such an adhesive label. The adhesive label should, when applied, exhibit high lamination strength with a small radius of curvature of the cylindrical body. Furthermore, the outer printing of the lamination film should also be highly scratch-resistant.
[0007] This object is achieved by the adhesive label according to claim 1 and the method according to claim 7.
[0008] Within the scope of the adhesive label according to the invention, it is provided that
[0009] • the film adhesive material has a film face material which has an adhesive coating and a release liner on the underside and a printing varnish coating and a first print on the top side,
[0010] • the laminating film has an adhesion promoter coating (primer) and a printing varnish coating (topcoat) on the underside and is corona-coated on the top side and has a second printing, and
[0011] • the laminating film is laminated onto the printing of the film adhesive material using a laminating adhesive, with the printing varnish-coated side of the laminating film facing the film adhesive material.
[0012] The location and direction specifications "top" and "bottom" refer to the intended arrangement of the adhesive label when dispensed. "Bottom" means facing the cylindrical body, and "top" means facing away from the cylindrical body.
[0013] In a departure from the usual practice, the invention provides for the varnish-coated side of the laminating film to face the adhesive film. This, combined with the printing on the corona-coated side, surprisingly prevents delamination of the laminating film from the adhesive film when applied, even on plastic bodies with a small radius of curvature. Furthermore, the outer printing of the laminating film achieves high scratch resistance.
[0014] Advantageous further developments of the adhesive label according to the invention are specified below and in the subclaims.
[0015] Preferably, the release liner is made of glassine or is designed as a PET carrier. The glassine release liner preferably has a film mass of 60 g / m 2 up to 65g / m 2and the release liner in the form of a PET carrier preferably has a thickness of 23 pm to 30 pm.
[0016] It is preferably provided that the film outer material consists of polypropylene, which preferably has a thickness of 40 pm to 60 pm, in particular 50 pm.
[0017] The laminating adhesive is preferably a UV laminating adhesive.
[0018] According to an advantageous development of the invention, the laminating film comprises a polypropylene film which preferably has a thickness of 26 pm to 44 pm, in particular of 31 pm to 39 pm.
[0019] According to a preferred embodiment of the invention, the second print comprises a UV matt varnish.
[0020] The process according to the invention for producing the adhesive label comprises the following process steps:
[0021] • Providing a film adhesive material by coating a film facestock with a printing varnish, coating a release liner with an adhesive, and laminating the film facestock to the adhesive;
[0022] • Providing a laminating film which has an adhesion promoter coating and a printing varnish coating on the underside and is pre-coronized on the top side;
[0023] • Re-coronization of the laminating film;
[0024] • Top-side printing of the post-coronized laminating film;
[0025] • Laminating the laminating film onto the printed film adhesive material using a laminating adhesive, with the varnish-coated side of the laminating film facing the film adhesive material.
[0026] In a departure from the usual practice, the varnish-coated side of the laminating film is designed to face the adhesive film. This, combined with the printing on the corona-coated side, surprisingly prevents delamination of the laminating film from the adhesive film when applied, even on plastic objects with a small radius of curvature. Furthermore, the outer printing of the laminating film is highly scratch-resistant.
[0027] Advantageous further developments of the method are specified below and in the subclaims.
[0028] According to an advantageous development of the invention, the printing varnish coating of the film face material is printed onto the release liner before or after lamination. The printing of the printing varnish of the film adhesive material is preferably carried out using UV flexographic printing, and / or the printing of the laminating film is preferably carried out using a UV matte varnish.
[0029] In practice, pre-coronization is performed by the manufacturer of the laminating film and is preferably carried out up to a surface tension of the laminating film of 35 dyn to 38 dyn. The laminating film is delivered for further processing, where post-coronization is preferably carried out up to a surface tension of the laminating film of 42 dyn to 44 dyn.
[0030] The adhesive labels and thus the composite of laminating film and film adhesive material are then punched and finished so that the adhesive labels can be dispensed onto the outer surface of the cylindrical body, in particular the cylindrical plastic body.
[0031] A specific embodiment of the invention is explained below with reference to the figures. They show:
[0032] Fig. 1a is a side view of a cylindrical body with an adhesive label;
[0033] Fig. lB top view of a cylindrical body
[0034] Fig. lc a cross-sectional view of an adhesive label
[0035] Fig. 2 a flow chart
[0036] Fig. 1a shows a side view of a cylindrical body 10, which in the illustrated embodiment is designed as a plastic body 101. Such a cylindrical body 10 is typically used as product packaging for effervescent tablets and similar products and is reversibly sealable by means of a lid 11.
[0037] Fig. 1b shows a cross-sectional view along the cross-sectional plane A-A of the cylindrical, thin-walled body 10, which has an inner radius R of 1 cm. The outer surface of the cylindrical body 10, apart from the seam 24, is completely encompassed by an adhesive label 100 on which product information (not shown) is reproduced.
[0038] Fig. 1c shows a cross-sectional view and thus the layered structure of the adhesive label 100 in the unapplied state. The adhesive label 100 comprises a film adhesive material 12 and a laminating film 13.
[0039] The film adhesive material 12 has a film outer material 14, which has an adhesive coating 15 on the underside and then a release liner 16, which in the embodiment shown is made of Glassine 161 with a film mass of 60 g / m 2 The film outer material 14 is made of polypropylene and has a thickness of 40 μm. On the upper side, the film adhesive material 14 initially has a printing varnish coating 17 and then a first print 18.
[0040] The laminating film 13 consists of a polypropylene film 19 with a thickness of 31 μm and has an adhesion promoter coating 20 on the underside and then a printing varnish coating 21. On the top side, the laminating film 14 is pre-coronized 57 and post-coronized 58 and has a second print 22.
[0041] The laminating film 14 is laminated to the first print 18 of the film adhesive material 12 using a laminating adhesive 23, with the varnish-coated side of the laminating film 13 facing the film adhesive material 12. The laminating adhesive 23 is a UV laminating adhesive, and the second print 22 has a UV matte varnish.
[0042] Because the varnish-coated side of the laminating film 13 faces the adhesive film 12 and the second print 22 is applied to the corona-coated side of the laminating film 13, delamination of the laminating film 13 from the adhesive film 12 is avoided when the adhesive label 100 is dispensed, particularly at the seam 24. Furthermore, a surprisingly high scratch resistance of the outer (second) print 22 of the laminating film 13 is achieved.
[0043] Fig. 2 shows a flow chart of the method 200 for producing an adhesive label 100 according to Fig. 1c.
[0044] First, the film adhesive material 12 is provided (50) by coating the film face material 14 on the top side with the printing varnish 17 (51), coating the release liner 16 with the adhesive 15 (52) and laminating the film face material 14 onto the adhesive 15 (53).
[0045] Furthermore, a laminating film is provided (54) which has been coated on the underside with an adhesion promoter and a printing varnish (55, 56) and pre-coronized on the top side (57). The pre-coronized side of the laminating film 13 has a surface tension of 36 dyn. The laminating film 13 is post-coronized in a separate step to a surface tension of 43 dyn (58). The post-coronized laminating film 13 is then printed on the top side (59). The laminating film 13 is laminated onto the printed film adhesive material 12 using the laminating adhesive (60), with the varnish-coated side of the laminating film 13 facing the film adhesive material 12.
[0046] In the illustrated embodiment, the coating 51 of the film outer material 12 with the printing varnish coating 17 takes place before lamination 53 onto the release liner 16. The printing 51 of the printing varnish 17 of the film adhesive material 12 is performed using UV flexographic printing. The printing 59 of the laminating film 13 is performed using a UV matte varnish.
[0047] The adhesive label 100 and thus the composite of laminating film 13 and film adhesive material 12 is then punched and finished so that individual adhesive label sections can be dispensed onto the outer surface of the cylindrical body 10, in particular the cylindrical plastic body 101.
