Description

A CONTROL SYSTEM FOR A LIGHTING APPARATUS

[0079] The internal clocks 140a, 140b, 140c are internal oscillators and are used as a counter clock. The synchroniser 160a, 160b, 160c is configured to synchronize the external clock signal 122 and the internal clock signal 142a, 142b, 142c to generate a synchronised signal 162a, 162b, 162c. Then the internal clock signal 142a, 142b, 142c and the synchronised signal 162a, 162b, 162c are processed by the digital control signal generator 170a, 170b , 170c to generate the PWM signal 172a, 172b, 172c. The PWM signal 172a, 172b, 172c has a period proportional to the synchronised signal 162a, 162b, 162c. The internal clock signal 142a, 142b, 142c can be thought of as a counter clock of the synchronised signal 162a, 162b, 162c and sets different duty cycles for the PWM signal 172a, 172b, 172c, so the average LED current can be modified according to different PWM duty. Each controller 130a, 130b, 130c uses its own internal clock 140a, 140b, 140c.

[0080] Figure 2 is a waveform diagram of the synchronised signal 162a, the internal clock signal 142a and the PWM signal 172a for the first controller 130a of the control system 100 of Figure 1. The diagram also shows the waveforms of the internal clock signal 142b and PWM signal 172b for the second controller 130b of the control system 100 of Figure 1.

[0081] In the control system 100 of Figure 1, every controller 130a, 130b, 130c uses its own internal clock 140a, 140b, 140c to synchronize with the external clock 120. However, due to the manufacturing process and temperature drift, each of the internal clocks 140a, 140b, 140c has a different clock period and different jitters. This can be seen from the waveforms 142a and 142b in Figure 2. Therefore, the PWM signals 172a, 172b, 172c will also have different jitters and it is difficult for the controllers 130a, 130b, 130c to generate identical PWM duty. For example, in Figure 2 each controller is set such that the PWM signal 172a, 172b has a high time which lasts for four periods of the internal clock signal 142a, 142b. However, due to internal clock 142a of the first controller 130a experiencing different jitters to the internal clock 142b of the second controller 130b, the falling edge of the PWM signals 172a and 172b do not occur simultaneously. Therefore, the high time of each PWM 172a, 172b is different. This means that the luminance of some of the strings of LEDs are either too dim or are too bright.

[0082] Figure 3 is a test result for the control system 100 of Figure 1, for a practical implementation of the control system 100. The results show the PWM signal 310 for the first controller 130a and the PWM signal 320 for the second controller 130b. As can be seen, the PWM duty of PWM signal 320 has an approximately 10.8 microsecond variation compared to the PWM duty of PWM signal 310.

[0083] It is an objective of the present disclosure to provide a new control system for a lighting apparatus which reduces the PWM jitters in different chips and synchronises the PWM duty of different chips such that they match. It is a further objective of the present disclosure to provide a control system which better matches the average LED currents of different chips.. A further objective of the present disclosure is to provide a control system which realises the synchronisation of the count clocks of different chips.

[0084] Figure 4 is a diagram of an example embodiment of a control system 400 for a lighting apparatus 410 in accordance with a first embodiment of the present disclosure. The lighting apparatus 410 may be, for example, a light emitting diode (LED) backlight. The lighting apparatus 410 comprises a plurality of lighting modules 412, 414. The control system 400 comprises a first controller 420 for controlling a first lighting module 412 and a second controller 430 for controlling a second lighting module 414. The first lighting module 412 may comprise, for example, one or more lighting elements. The one or more lighting elements may be, for example, LEDs. The second lighting module 414 may comprise, for example, one or more lighting elements. The one or more lighting elements may be, for example, an LED.

[0085] The first controller 420 comprises a first internal clock 422 and a first control signal generator 424. The first internal clock 422 is configured to generate a first clock signal CLK. The first control signal generator 424 is configured to generate a first control signal CS1 based on the first internal clock signal CLK. The first control signal generator 424 may be, for example, a digital signal processor which may be configured in a given register to generate the control signal CS1 desired. The first internal clock signal CLK may be, for example, a digital signal. The first control signal generator 424 is configured to receive digital signals. The first internal clock 422 is coupled to the first control signal generator 424 such that the first control signal generator 424 receives the first internal clock signal CLK as an input. During operation, the first controller 420 controls the first lighting module 412 using the first control signal CS1. The second controller 430 comprises a second control signal generator 432 configured to generate a second control signal CS2 based on the first internal clock signal CLK. Therefore, the second control signal CS2 is synchronised to the first control signal CS1. The second control signal generator 432 is also configured to receive digital signals. The first internal clock 422 is coupled to the second control signal generator 432 such that the second control signal generator 432 receives the first internal clock signal CLK as an input. During operation, the second controller 430 controls the second lighting module 414 using the second control signal CS2. The first controller 420 and the second controller 430 may be implemented as, for example, integrated circuit chips.

[0086] The first control signal generator 424 may comprise a first pulse width modulation (PWM) generator 424a. The second internal control signal generator 432 may comprise a second PWM generator 432a. The first control signal CS1 may, therefore, comprise a first duty cycle, a first rising edge and a first falling edge. The first duty cycle, the first rising edge and the first falling edge being dependent on the first internal clock signal CLK. The second control signal CS2 may comprise a second duty cycle, a second rising edge and a second falling edge. The second duty cycle, the second rising edge and the second falling edge being dependent on the first internal clock signal CLK such that the second control signal CS2 is synchronised to the first control signal CS1. In the context of the present disclosure, the second control signal CS2 is synchronised to the first control signal CS1 if either: the first rising edge and the second rising edge occur simultaneously; or the first falling edge and the second falling edge occur simultaneously; or the first rising edge and the second rising edge occur simultaneously and the first falling edge and the second falling edge occur simultaneously.

[0087] Figure 5 is a diagram of another example embodiment of a control system 400 for a lighting apparatus 410 according to a second embodiment of the present disclosure. The control system 400 is the same as the control system of Figure 4 with the addition of features 426 and 432. Hence, the same labelling has been kept and the components are taken to have the same functionality and meaning as for the control system 400 of Figure 4. The second controller 430 may comprise an internal clock 438.

[0088] The first controller 420 further comprises a first port module 426. The first port module 426 is configured to provide either an input port or an output port for the first controller 420. When the first port module 426 is configured as an output port, the first internal clock signal CLK may be transmitted from the first controller 420. When the first port module 426 is configured as an input port , the first internal clock signal CLK may be received at the first controller 420. The first port module 426 is coupled to the first internal clock 422. It is understood that the first port module 426 may be further coupled to other components of the first controller 420 in accordance with the understanding of the skilled person. The second controller 430 further comprises a second port module 434. The second port module 434 is configured to provide either an input port or an output port for the second controller 430. When the second port module is configured as an output porta signal may be transmitted from the second controller 430. The signal may be, for example, the first internal clock signal CLK. When the second port module is configured as an input port, a signal may be received at the second controller 430. The signal may be, for example, the first internal clock signal CLK. The second port module 434 is coupled to the first port module 426 and the second control signal generator 432. It is understood that the second bidirectional pin 434 may be further coupled to other components of the second controller 430 in accordance with the understanding of the skilled person.

[0089] When in operation, the control system 400 is configured in such a way that the first port module 426 is configured as an output port and the second port module 434 is configured as an input port. Hence the first internal clock signal CLK is transmitted from the first controller 420 to the second controller 430. CLK

[0090] Figure 6 is a diagram of another example embodiment of a control system 400 for a lighting apparatus 410 according to a third embodiment of the present disclosure. The control system 400 is the same as the control system of Figure 5 with the addition of features 426a. 434a, 428, 436, SET1 and SET2. Hence, the same labelling has been kept and the components are taken to have the same functionality and meaning as for the control system 400 of Figure 5.

[0091] The first port module 426 may comprise a first bidirectional pin 426a coupled to a first selection circuit 428. The first bidirectional pin 426a may be configured as either an input pin or an output pin. If the first bidirectional pin 426a is configured as an output pin, then the first port module 426 is configured as an output port. If the first bidirectional pin 426a is configured as an input pin, then the first port module 426 is configured as an input port. The first selection circuit 428 may comprise, for example, one or more multiplexers (not shown in Figure 6) . The first selection circuit 428 is configured to generate a first setting signal SET1 which sets the first bidirectional pin 426a as either an input pin or an output pin. The first setting signal SET1 comprises either a first value or a second value, the first value being greater than the second value. The first value sets the first bidirectional pin 426a as an output pin and the second value sets the first bidirectional pin 426a as an input pin. The first selection circuit 428 is coupled to the first bidirectional pin 426a. It is understood that the first selection circuit 428 may be further coupled to other components of the first controller 420 in accordance with the understanding of the skilled person. The second port module 430 comprises a second bidirectional pin 434a coupled to a second selection circuit 436. The second bidirectional pin 434a may be configured as either an input pin or an output pin. If the second bidirectional pin 434a is configured as an output pin, then the second port module 434 is configured as an output port. If the second bidirectional pin is configured as an input pin, then the second port module is configured as an input port.. The second selection circuit 436 may comprise, for example, one or more multiplexers (not shown in Figure 6) . The second selection circuit 436 is configured to generate a second setting signal SET2. The second setting signal SET2 comprises either a third value or a fourth value, the third value being greater than the fourth value. The third value sets the second bidirectional pin 434a as an output pin and the fourth value sets the second bidirectional pin 434a as an input pin. The second selection circuit 436 is coupled to the second bidirectional pin 434a. It is understood that the second selection circuit 436 may be further coupled to other components of the second controller 430 in accordance with the understanding of the skilled person.

[0092] In operation, the control system 400 is configured in such a way that the first setting signal SET1 comprises the first value and the second setting signal SET2 comprises the fourth value. Therefore, the first bidirectional pin 426a is configured as an output pin and hence the first port module 426 operates as an output port for the first controller. The second bidirectional pin 434a is configured as an input pin and hence the second port module 434 operates as an input port for the second controller 430. Hence, the first internal clock signal CLK is transmitted from the first controller 420 to the second controller 430.

[0093] The first controller 420 may, for example, further comprise a first digital block (not shown in Figure 6) , wherein the first digital block is configured to control the first selection circuit 428. The first digital block controls the selection circuit 428 by outputting a binary signal with a value of either 0 or 1. The second controller 430 may, for example, further comprise a second digital block (not shown in Figure 6) , wherein the second digital block is configured to control the second selection circuit 436.

[0094] Figure 7 is a diagram of another example embodiment of a control system 400 for a lighting apparatus 410 according to a fourth embodiment of the present disclosure. The control system 400 is the same as the control system of Figure 6 with the addition of features 440 and EXT. Therefore, the same labelling has been kept and the components are taken to have the same functionality and meaning as for the control system 400 of Figure 6.

[0095] The control system 400 further comprises an external clock 440 configured to generate an external clock signal EXT. The external clock 440 is coupled to both the first controller 420 and the second controller 430 such that the external clock signal is transmitted to both the first controller 420 and the second controller 430 simultaneously.

[0096] The first controller 420 is further configured to receive the external clock signal EXT such that the first control signal CS1 is based on both the first internal clock signal CLK and the external clock signal EXT. The second controller 430 is further configured to receive the external clock signal EXT such that the second control signal CS2 is based on both the first internal clock signal CLK and the external clock signal EXT.

[0097] Figure 8 is a diagram of another example embodiment of a control system 400 for a lighting apparatus 410 according to a fifth embodiment of the present disclosure. The control system 400 is the same as the control system of Figure 7 with the addition of features 450, 460, SYNC1 and SYNC2. Hence, the same labelling has been kept and the components are taken to have the same functionality and meaning as for the control system 400 of Figure 7.

[0098] The first controller 420 further comprises a first synchroniser 450 configured to synchronise the external clock signal EXT to the first internal clock signal CLK. The first synchroniser 450 is further configured to generate a first synchronised signal SYNC1. The first synchroniser 450 is coupled to the first internal clock 422, the external clock 440 and the first control signal generator 424 such that the first control signal generator 424 receives both the first internal clock signal CLK and the first synchronised signal SYNC1 as inputs. It is understood that the first synchroniser 450 may be further coupled to other components of the first controller 420 in accordance with the understanding of the skilled person. In operation, the first control signal generator 424 receives the first internal clock signal CLK and the first synchronised signal SYNC1. The first control signal generator 424 then generates the first control signal CS1 for controlling the first lighting module 412. The first control signal CS1 being based on both the first internal clock signal CLK and the first synchronised signal SYNC1.

[0099] The second controller 430 further comprises a second synchroniser 460 configured to synchronise the external clock signal EXT to the first internal clock signal CLK. The second synchroniser 460 is further configured to generate a second synchronised signal SYNC2. The second synchroniser 460 is coupled to the second bidirectional pin 434, the external clock 440 and the second control signal generator 432 such that the second control signal generator 432 receives both the first internal clock signal CLK and the external clock signal EXT as inputs. It is understood that the second synchroniser 460 may be further coupled to other components of the second controller 430 in accordance with the understanding of the skilled person. In operation, the second control signal generator 432 receives the first internal clock signal CLK and the second synchronised signal SYNC2. The second control signal generator 432 then generates the second control signal CS2 for controlling the second lighting module 414. The second control signal CS2 being based on both the first internal clock signal CLK and the second synchronised signal SYNC2.

[0100] The first control signal generator 424 may comprise, for example, a first PWM generator 424a. The second internal control signal generator 432 may comprise, for example, a second PWM generator 432a. The first control signal CS1 may, therefore, comprise a first duty cycle, a first rising edge, and a first falling edge. The first duty cycle, the first rising edge and the first falling being dependent on the first internal clock signal CLK. The second control signal CS2 may comprise a second duty cycle, a second rising edge and a second falling edge. The second duty cycle, the second rising edge and the second falling edge being dependent on the first internal clock signal CLK . Hence the second control signal CS2 is synchronised to the first control signal CS1.

[0101] Figure 9 is an exemplary embodiment of a control system 400 for a lighting apparatus 410 according to a sixth embodiment of the present disclosure. The control system 400 is the same as the control system of Figure 8 except with the addition of a third controller 910 and a third lighting module 920. Therefore, the same labelling has been kept and the components are taken to have the same functionality and meaning as for Figure 8.

[0102] The control system 400 further comprises a third controller 910 for controlling a third lighting module 920 using a third control signal CS3. The third lighting module may comprise, for example, one or more lighting elements. The lighting elements, may be, for example, LEDs. The third controller 910 comprises a third control signal generator 912 configured to generate the third control signal CS3 based on the first internal clock signal CLK. The third controller 910 may, for example, be configured to receive the first internal clock signal CLK from the first controller 420. In alternative embodiments, the third controller 910 may, for example, be configured to receive the first internal clock signal CLK from the second controller 430 (see Figure 12) . The third controller may be implemented as, for example, an integrated circuit chip.

[0103] The third controller also comprises: a third port module 914. The third port module comprising a third bidirectional pin 914a coupled to a third selection circuit 916 configured to generate a third setting signal SET3, and a third synchroniser 930 configured to generate a synchronised signal SYNC3. It is to be understood that the third controller 910 is a replication of the second controller 430. Hence, the third control signal generator 912, the third port module 914, the third bidirectional pin 914a, the third selection circuit 916, and the third synchroniser 930 are taken to have the same functionality and meaning as the second control signal generator 432, the second bidirectional pin 434, the second selection circuit 436 and the second synchroniser 460.

[0104] In other embodiments, the lighting apparatus 410 may comprise one or more additional lighting modules. The control system 400 may also comprise one or more additional controls. Each of the one or more additional controllers is configured to control each of the one or more additional lighting modules using one or more additional control signals. Each of the one or more additional controllers comprises an additional control signal generator configured to generate an additional control signal based on the first internal clock signal. Hence, each of the additional control signals are synchronized to the first control signal.

[0105] Figure 10 is an exemplary waveform diagram of the first synchronised signal SYNC1, the first internal clock signal CLK, the first control signal CS1 and the second control signal CS2 of the exemplary control system 400 of Figure 9. The first control signal CS1 and the second control signal CS2 in this exemplary embodiment are PWM signals.

[0106] In operation, each controller receives the first internal clock signal CLK, hence, all controllers are using the same counter clock. Therefore the different controllers can realize clock synchronization. Figure 10 illustrates the timing and benefits of this using the first internal clock signal CLK for all controllers. The first internal clock signal CLK means all controllers have identical periods and jitters such that the falling edges of the first control signal CS1 and the second control signal CS2 are simultaneous and the PWM duty of all controllers are matched. Therefore, the control signals of all the controllers have the same high time such that the average LED current of the lighting elements are more uniform compared with known systems. Hence the luminance of all the lighting elements is more uniform compared with known systems.

[0107] Figure 11 is a test result for the exemplary control system 400 of Figure 9, for a practical implementation of the control system 400. The first control signal CS1 and the second control signal CS2 were implemented as PWM signals. The plot shows the first PWM signal 1110 and the second PWM signal 1120. The PWM duty of the second PWM signal 1120 has only 1.08 microsecond variation from the PWM duty of the first PWM signal 1110. Hence, the performance of the control system 400 is improved beyond that of what is known in the art.

[0108] Figure 12 is another exemplary embodiment of a control system 400 for a lighting apparatus according to a seventh embodiment of the present disclosure. The control system 400 is the same as the control system of Figure 9 except for the addition of features 1210 and 1220. Therefore, the same labelling has been kept and the components are taken to have the same meaning and functionality as for Figure 9. In this exemplary embodiment, the third controller 910 is configured to receive the first internal clock signal CLK from the second controller 430.

[0109] The second controller 430 comprises a first additional pin 1210. The third controller 910 a second additional pin 1220. The first and / or second additional pins 1210, 1220 may each be a bidirectional pin and / or an output pin. The first controller 420, the second controller 430 and the third controller 910 are coupled together in such a way that they form a daisy-chain structure.

[0110] In operation, the first controller 420 synchronizes the first internal clock signal CLK with the second controller 430 via the first bidirectional pin 426 and the second bidirectional pin 434. Then, the second controller 430 propagates the first internal clock signal CLK to the third controller 910 via the first additional pin 1210 and the third bidirectional pin 914a. Similarly, the third controller 910 may propagate the first internal clock signal CLK to a fourth controller via the second additional pin 1220. The fourth controller may propagate the first internal clock signal CLK onto the next chip and so on until the first internal clock signal CLK has reached the final chip.

[0111] In this alternative embodiment, each of the controllers may also further comprise a buffer which is configured to improve the quality of signal.

[0112] An advantage of this daisy-chain structure is that the load impedance of each of the bidirectional pins is reduced. Hence, the first internal clock signal CLK will have a smaller transition time at each controller. Another advantage is that the printed circuit board route is simpler and shorter as the connections will be between adjacent controllers. However, this alternative embodiment requires an additional pin on each controller to realise the daisy-chain structure.

[0113] Figure 13 is a diagram of an example lighting apparatus 1300 in accordance with an eight embodiment of the present disclosure. The lighting apparatus 1300 comprises a first lighting module 412, a second lighting module 414 and a control system 400 The control system 400 may be any one of the embodiments described in the present disclosure.

[0114] The lighting apparatus 1300 may be, for example, a backlight light emitting diode (LED) apparatus.

[0115] Figure 14 is a flow chart showing a method for controlling a lighting apparatus comprising a first lighting module and a second lighting module.

[0116] At step 1410, the first lighting module is controlled using a first control signal. The first control signal may be provided by a first controller. The first controller may comprise a first internal clock and a first control signal generator. The first internal clock may be configured to generate a first internal clock signal and the first control signal generator may be configured to generate the first control signal based on the first internal clock signal.

[0117] At step 1420, the second lighting module is controlled using a second control signal. The second control signal may be provided by a second controller. The second controller may comprise a second control signal generator configured to generate the second control signal based on the first internal clock signal.

[0118] It will be appreciated that the control systems of the present disclosure may be control systems for backlighting apparatuses. Further embodiments may relate to control systems for other lighting applications and for other input voltages, in accordance with the understanding of the skilled person.

[0119] Various improvements and modifications may be made without departing from the scope of the disclosure.

[0120] A skilled person will appreciate that variations of the disclosed arrangements are possible without departing from the disclosure. Accordingly, the above description of the specific embodiments is made by way of example only and not for the purposes of limitation. It will be clear to the skilled person that minor modifications may be made without significant changes to the operation described.
