[0001] The present application claims priority to United States Provisional Patent Application Serial No. 63 / 649,990, filed on May 21, 2024, the entirety of which is incorporated herein by reference.FIELD OF THE TECHNOLOGY
[0002] The present invention generally relates to tools and techniques for covering and retaining desired temperature levels for cooked food items of varying sizes. More particularly, the invention relates to thermally insulative coverings for use in connection with covering and retaining heat for recently cooked food items.BACKGROUND
[0003] In many environments where food is prepared and cooked, oven or stove space is often at a premium for the chef preparing the food. This can be especially challenging for adequately preparing food for a larger than usual group of participants, such as during holiday meals, large family gatherings, graduation parties, or other special events. As shown in FIG. 1, for example, the same oven 102 may be used to cook multiple food items 104, 106, 108, which may have different cooking times, cooking temperatures, or other recipe-related cooking parameters. This creates a problem for keeping food items that have already been cooked suitably warm for consumption, while waiting for other food items are still in the process of being cooked.Conventional practices associated with covering cooked food items often involve materials such as aluminum foil. But these types of materials do not provide sufficient thermal insulation propertiesfor keeping a first food item sufficiently warm, for example, while a second food item is still being cooked.
[0004] What are needed, therefore, are enhanced tools and techniques for retaining a suitable temperature for cooked food items until the cooked items are ready to be eaten.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE FIGURES

[0032] FIGS. 2A-2C illustrate different views of one example of an adjustable insulating covering 202 structured in accordance with certain embodiments of the present invention. As described in more detail below, the covering 202 can be embodied as an insulated softshell cover,for example, designed to be collapsed to substantially conform to at least one contour of a prepared or cooked food item and to retain the temperature level of the food item. Examples of food items include, without limitation, turkeys of varying sizes, chickens, roasts, casseroles, and other cooked food items which may be removed from an oven or other cooking environment. The covering 202 may employ adjustable hook-and-loop fasteners (e.g., “Velcro” fasteners) to promote a snug customizable / adjustable fit for optimal coverage of the food item and to promote maximum heat retention. The covering 202 can be cut and / or molded to dimensions that suitably cover the size of the food item, and / or the size of the combination of the food item and the cooking apparatus (e.g., pot, pan, tray, etc.) in which the food item was prepared 106. For example, one type of covering 202 can be suitably structured and dimensioned to cover chicken-sized and turkey-sized food items and medium to large casserole sized food items, while another type of covering 202 could be structured and dimensioned to cover smaller meat and smaller casserole-sized food items 104. In certain aspects, custom color schemes and embossed patterns such as turkeys, pigs, cows, etc., could be incorporated into the covering 202 design to provide a more aesthetically pleasing look.
[0033] In certain aspects, the covering 202 can comprise a generally rectangularly shaped body 204 having a plurality of flaps 206A-206D or ears extending therefrom. A fastener portion 208A-208D can be attached to each of the flaps 206A-206D (respectively), as shown. In addition, mounting portions 210A, 210B, can be attached at each end of the body 204, each with a surface structured to connect with the fastener portions 208A-208D. In this example, fastener portions 208 A, 208C correspondingly interact with and connect with mounting portion 210A, and fastener portions 208B, 208D correspondingly interact and connect with mounting portion 210B. In one embodiment, the fastener portions 208A-208D and the mounting portions 210A, 210B collectively provide a hook-and-loop fastening arrangement (e.g., a “Velcro” fastening arrangement). In another aspect, the fastener portions 208A-208D can comprise the loop portion of the hook-and-loop fastening arrangement, for example, while the mounting portions 210A, 201B can comprise thehook portion of the hook-and-loop fastening arrangement. FIGS. 2A-2C include examples of physical dimensions which can be adjusted (higher or lower) in response to the type of food item to be covered and insulated by the covering 202.

In a similar manner, FIG. 4A illustrates a side view of the covering 202 in a first state prior to collapse, and FIG. 4B illustrates the covering 202 in a second state when the covering 202 has been collapsed and fastened to contain and secure a cooked food item, for example.
[0035] In certain aspects, the body 204 can be structured with multiple layers, including an outer shell 502, an inner shell 602, and / or a layer of batting or padding positioned between the outer shell and the inner shell. In other aspects, a bound edge 212 (see, e.g., FIG. 2B) can be incorporated to promote the structural integrity of the covering 202. The bound edge 2121 material can incorporate elastic band type material, for example, to enhance the adjustability of the design. FIG. 5 illustrates one example of a pattern for forming the outer shell 502 (FIG. 5 also includes examples of physical dimensions which can be adjusted (higher or lower) in response to the type of food item to be covered and insulated by the covering). FIG. 6 illustrates one example of a pattern for forming the inner shell 602 (FIG. 6 also includes examples of physical dimensions which can be adjusted (higher or lower) in response to the type of food item to be covered and insulated by the covering). The pattern for the inner shell 602 can be structured to differ from the pattern for the outer shell 502 to reduce seams and to reduce the potential for forming pockets that can be created by overlapping material (as shown in FIG. 8D). FIG. 6 also includes examples of physical dimensions which can beadjusted (higher or lower) to allow the cover to be produced in small-medium, medium, and / or large sizes, among other varying sizes.
[0036] The outer shell 502 can be comprised of cotton or a blend material for purpose of stain resistance and / or shrink resistance. The outer shell 502 can comprise a food safe material which is capable of safely coming into contact with different kinds of food items. The inner shell 602 can comprise a silicone-coated fabric such as nylon or cotton, silicone, and / or a heat reflective material. In one embodiment, the material for the inner shell 602 can comprise a polyester film such as biaxially -oriented polyethylene terephthalate (BoPET) (e.g., a trade-designed “Mylar” material or Mylar-like material). The inner shell 602 is generally intended to comprise a food safe material which is capable of safely coming into contact with and covering a cooked food item. In another example, a waterproof material such as polyurethane laminate (PUL) fabric can be used. In another aspect, the inner shell 602 can comprise a food safe silicone coated nylon (one side coated), with a coating in the range of 4.42 oz / sq. yd. + / - 5%. The inner shell 602 can also comprise a food safe silicone coated nylon, one side coated, with a coating in the range of 3.2 oz / sq. yd. + / - 10%. In another aspect, the inner shell 602 can comprise a food safe silicone coated nylon, two sides coated, with a coating in the range of 3.9 oz / sq. yd. + / - 10%. In another example, the inner shell 602 can comprise a food safe silicone aluminum coated nylon, one side coated, with a coating in the range of 3.2 oz / sq. yd. + / - 10%. The insulation or batting layer optionally positioned between the inner shell 602 and the outer shell 502 can comprise batting with different lofts, made of a suitable material such as cotton, wool, polyester, a natural fiber, and / or an effective blend thereof. For example, a polyester fabric marketed under the trade name “Dacron” can be used, and / or a heat-reflective material or polyester film such as biaxially-oriented polyethylene terephthalate (BoPET) (e.g., a trade-designed “Mylar” material or Mylar-like material).
[0037] FIG. 7 includes a process flow diagram illustrating one example of making an adjustable insulating covering in accordance with certain embodiments of the invention. In thiscovering construction example, a 3 / 8” - 1 / 2” seam allowance has been used. An outer shell (see FIG. 8A) and batting were stitched together (see FIG. 8B) using an approximate 3.5”-4” diamond pattern. At step 702, component pieces of the insulating covering can be measured and cut as follows: cut one (1) outer shell piece at 43.5” x 12”; cut one (1) inner shell pieces at 22.5” x 19.5”; cut one (1) piece of batting at 43.5” x 12”; and cut additional cutouts as needed per diagram measurements. At step 704, the outer shell unit can be formed by keeping the right sides of the pieces together, sewing the top tabs, and then sewing side seam (see FIG. 8C). At step 706, while keeping the right sides together, the outer shell unit is opened to match the tab seam with the side seam. The edges can be straightened and aligned, easing the curved area to the edges, sewing the seam, and repeating the process on the other side of the outer shell unit (see FIG. 8D). In FIG. 8D, it can be seen how pockets are formed by overlapping material to support the fastener arrangement and adjustment capabilities of the covering. At step 708, the flaps of the outer shell are pulled out and extended. At step 710, the fastener portions and the mounting portions can be attached to the insulating covering (see FIG. 8E). At step 712, the inner shell pattern (see FIG. 9A) can be sewn by aligning its edges and curved areas, with the food safe side of the inner shell facing outward (i.e., not facing the outer shell - see FIG. 9B and FIG. 9C showing all four corners sewn). Also, the inner shell can be inserted into the outer shell by aligning the shorter sides and the longer sides (respectively) from both shells (see FIG. 9D). At step 714, the adjustable insulating covering can be completed by creating a binding at the bottom edge of the covering (see, e.g., FIGS. 10A and 10B). The binding material can include elastic material, for example, to allow for increased adjustability.

[0039] FIGS. 13-1 A to 13-1C includes another example of an adjustable insulating covering 1302 which can be structured in accordance with different embodiments of the invention. In thisexample, the covering 1302 comprises a body portion 1304 divided into multiple segments 1306A- 1306D separated by slits. The body portion 1304 can be structured to expand outward when used to cover a food item 1308, for example, and to collapse inward when removed from the food item 1308. In addition, one or more buttons (such as buttons 1310A, 1310B) can be molded or stitched into the covering 1302 to secure the overlapping segments in response to varying sizes of the food item 1308 to be covered by the covering 1302.
[0040] FIG. 13-2A shows another example of an insulating covering 1322 which can be structured in accordance with different embodiments of the invention. The covering 1322 includes a body portion 1324 which can be comprised of a transparent or semi-transparent material, for example. In this manner, a food item 1326 covered by the covering 1322 can be viewed from the exterior of the covering 1322 when in use. A handle 1328 may be attached to the body portion 1324, for example, to facilitate placement or removal of the covering 1322 to / from the food item 1326. The handle 1328 can be molded into to the top of the covering 1322, for example, and it can be used to assist in placing and lifting the adjustable covering to / from the food item 1326. FIG. 13- 2B shows another example of an insulating covering 1330 structured similarly to the insulating covering 1322 but without a handle attached thereto.
[0041] FIGS. 14A and 14B include another example of an insulating covering which can be structured in accordance with different embodiments of the invention. FIGS. 15A and 15B include examples of insulating coverings which can be structured in accordance with different embodiments of the invention and which can be used to cover a cooking apparatus (e.g., a pan, a pot, a tray, etc.). FIG. 16A includes another example of an insulating covering which can be structured in accordance with different embodiments of the invention and which can be structured to cover the tray shown in FIG. 16B.
[0042] FIGS. 17A, 17B, and 18 illustrate an example of an insulating covering 1702 which can be structured and implemented in accordance with certain embodiments of the invention. In thisexample, the covering 1702 can be comprised of a silicone rubber “blanket” structure with overlapping panels designed to cover various sizes of food items 1704 contained within a cooking apparatus 1706. The covering 1702 can also be cut and / or molded to dimensions that suitably cover the size of the food item 1704, and / or the size of the combination of the food item 1704 and the cooking apparatus 1706. For example, one type of covering 1702 can be dimensioned to cover chicken-sized or turkey-sized food items 1704, while another type of covering 1702 could be dimensioned to cover casserole-sized food items 1704. In certain aspects, custom color schemes and embossed patterns such as turkeys, pigs, cows, etc., could be incorporated into the covering 1702 mold to provide a more aesthetically pleasing look. For example, the insulating covering 1702 can be printed, labeled, or customized with different ornamental aspects, such as the embossments 1902A-1902C shown in FIG. 19.
[0043] In certain embodiments, the adjustable insulating covering 1702 can be structured to incorporate one or more types of air pockets to provide additional heat insulating value. The insulating covering 1702 can be molded, structured, and / or comprised of different types of materials which, alone or in combination, improve the heat retention qualities of the covering 102.
[0044] One example of a disposable insulating covering 1702 can be made by using a BoPET-type material. Also, another example of a reusable insulating covering 1702 option can be made by using a silicone rubber material which can be washed to permit recycling and reuse of the covering 1702, for example. In various embodiments, the covering 1702 can comprise a material having a hardness (as measured by a standard measurement method with a durometer) in the range of 10A to 60A, or more preferably 10A. In one experimental test, a 10A 1 / 16" thick FDA-approved rubber silicone was used as the primary material for the covering 1702 which provided satisfactory results. In this experiment, an hour after the experimental food item (a chicken) was removed from the oven, the test chicken dropped by a temperature of 31 degrees (F) by using aluminum foil as the primary material for the covering 1702, but only by a temperature of 13 degrees (F) when usingrubber silicone as the primary materials for the covering 1702. Consequently, the food item covered by the covering 1702 was about 18 degrees (F) hotter when served after an hour after being removed from the oven.
[0045] FIGS. 20A, 20B, and 21 illustrate another example of an insulating covering 2002 which can be structured and implemented in accordance with certain embodiments of the invention. In this example, the covering 2002 comprises a multi-layer BoPET, which is a polyester film made from stretched polyethylene terephthalate which can be used for its high tensile strength, chemical and dimensional stability, and gas and aroma barrier properties. One example of BoPET which can comprise the covering 2002 is the trade-designated “Mylar” material. In other embodiments, the covering 2002 may comprise a Mylar polyethylene laminate and / or an infrared (IR) reflective Mylar type material.
[0046] In this example, the insulating covering 2002 can be used to cover a food item 2004 (e.g., a turkey or chicken) which is positioned inside of a cooking apparatus 2006 (e.g., a roaster). In certain embodiments, another kind of insulating covering 2002A may be provided with an integral elastic band 2008 structured to secure the insulating covering 2002A in place over the food item 2004 contained in the cooking apparatus 2006. In other embodiments, the elastic band 2010 may be a separate component used in conjunction with the insulating covering 2002 to secure the insulating covering 2002 in place over both the cooking apparatus 2006 and the food item 2004 contained in the cooking apparatus 2006 (e.g., as shown in FIG. 21).
[0047] FIGS. 22 and 23 illustrate other examples of how a disposable, adjustable insulating covering 2202 can be packaged together with an elastic band 2204 provided as a separate component, perhaps as part of a kit, for example. As shown in FIG. 22, the single layer is comprised of a Mylar type material, for example.

In one aspect, depending on the insulative heat properties desired for the insulating covering, one of the multiple layers may be an air layer 2408 to provide an air gap between the other layers 2402, 2406. In another aspect, one or more struts or pins 2410, 2412, 2414, struts, or other devices may be provided to promote the air layer 2408 between the other two layers 2402, 2406.

Claims
CLAIMSWHAT IS CLAIMED IS:
1. An adjustable insulating covering structured for covering and thermally insulating at least one cooked food item therein, the insulating covering comprising: a body having a plurality of flaps extending from the body; at least one fastener portion attached to at least one of the flaps; at least one mounting portion attached to at least one end of the body; at least one mounting portion having a surface structured to connect with at least one fastener portion; and wherein, in a collapsed state of the insulating covering, when the fastener portion is connected with the surface of the mounting portion, the flap associated with the connected fastener portion is collapsed against the body to: substantially conform the body to at least one contour of the cooked food item, and to promote retention of a temperature level of the food item.
2. The adjustable insulating covering of Claim 1, further comprising the fastener portion and the mounting portion collectively comprise a hook-and-loop fastening arrangement .
3. The adjustable insulating covering of Claim 1, further comprising the fastener portion attached to the flap structured to be moved inwardly toward the mounting portion to collapse the body.
4. The adjustable insulating covering of Claim 1, further comprising the body comprising multiple layers.
5. The adjustable insulating covering of Claim 4, further comprising the multiple layers comprising at least an outer shell and an inner shell.
6. The adjustable insulating covering of Claim 5, further comprising a layer of batting or padding positioned between the outer shell and the inner shell.
7. The adjustable insulating covering of Claim 1, further comprising the body having a bound edge.
8. The adjustable insulating covering of Claim 5, further comprising the outer shell comprising at least one of a cotton fabric, a polyester fabric, and / or a blended fabric.
9. The adjustable insulating covering of Claim 5, further comprising the inner shell comprising a food safe material.
10. The adjustable insulating covering of Claim 5, further comprising the inner shell comprising a blended material comprised of a stain-resistant and shrink-resistant material.
