Abstract

Embodiments of the present disclosure relate to energy consumption optimization. In an aspect, a first device (for example, a terminal device) receives, from a second device (for example, a network device), a set of power saving configurations to be applied at a set of energy levels of the first device. Each of the set of power saving configurations indicates at least one operation to be performed by the first device at a corresponding energy level of the set of energy levels. The first device determines an energy level of the first device, and determines, based on the determined energy level, a power saving configuration among the set of power saving configurations. Moreover, the first device performs at least one operation indicated by the determined power saving configuration. Performing the at least one operation comprises one or more of the following: monitoring and / or responding to a request message, skipping monitoring and / or responding to a request message, performing a measurement, skipping performing a measurement, or transmitting data to the second device.

[0041] There are some technologies introduced for UE power saving, such as discontinuous reception (DRX) , the use of wake up signal (WUS) , or mobile initiated connection only (MICO) .

[0042] The UE may use the DRX in the RRC_IDLE and RRC_INACTIVE state in order to reduce power consumption. The UE monitors one paging occasion (PO) per DRX cycle. A PO is a set of PDCCH monitoring occasions and can consist of multiple time slots (e.g. subframe or OFDM symbol) where a paging DCI can be sent. One Paging Frame (PF) is one Radio Frame and may contain one or multiple PO (s) or the starting point of a PO. To further reduce power consumption, the UE may have extended DRX (eDRX) for connection management (CM) -IDLE and CM-CONNECTED with RRC-INACTIVE. When there is no downlink data, it is inefficient (in terms of power saving) for the UE to monitor POs.

[0043] The WUS allows for power saving at the UE. UEs save power by continuing to sleep (i.e., No wake up) even for the DRX OnDuration period when there is no data for the UE i.e., when gNB notifies the UE of 'No Wake Up'. When there is any data for the UE,  gNB would notify the UE of 'Wave Up's o that UE wakes up and receives data during OnDuration time. The UE needs to monitor the WUS to receive the alert message from the gNB.

[0044] In the 5G, MICO mode is introduced which can aid the UE in power saving. A device in MICO mode cannot be paged as it would not listen to paging to conserve battery power. When the access and mobility management function (AMF) indicates the MICO mode to a UE, the AMF considers the UE always unreachable while the UE CM state in the AMF is CM-IDLE. The AMF rejects any request for downlink data delivery for the UE in the MICO mode and whose UE CM state in the AMF is CM-IDLE with an appropriate cause. The UE in the MICO mode is only reachable for mobile terminated data or signaling when the UE is in CM-CONNECTED. A UE in the MICO mode need not listen to paging while it is in CM-IDLE. A UE in the MICO mode may stop any access stratum procedure in CM-IDLE until the UE initiates the transition from CM-IDLE to CM-CONNECTED due to one of the following triggers: a change in the UE (e.g. change in configuration) requires an update of its registration with the network; a periodic registration timer expires; MO data pending; or MO signaling pending (e.g. SM procedure initiated) .

[0045] In the 6G 3GPP release 20 or 21 (Rel-20 or 21) , low-power wide-area internet-of-things (LPWA IoT) is thought to be a day-1 use case. Low power operation is a key requirement for LPWA IoT UEs. LPWA IoT is crucial for enabling widespread IoT deployment, necessitating low power consumption and wide coverage areas, where devices may transmit small amounts of data over long distances. 6G aims to provide ubiquitous connectivity in both rural and remote areas, for which LPWA technologies are ideally suited, offering coverage in areas where traditional cellular connectivity might not be available. Furthermore, LPWA technologies have an energy-efficient design, enabling devices to operate on a single battery for many years, thus supporting sustainable and green 6G communication technologies. Moreover, LPWA technologies facilitate massive IoT deployments, accommodating a vast number of devices to scale IoT effectively. LPWA also aids in integrating sensing and communication, essential for applications ranging from environmental monitoring to smart agriculture, where sensing and low-rate data transmission are crucial. Cost-effectiveness, in terms of both device hardware and operational costs, is another advantage of LPWA technologies, aligning with the 6G vision of making advanced connectivity solutions affordable for a broader range of applications. Finally, LPWA technologies generate a large amount of data from sensors, which can be fed into artificial  intelligence (AI) algorithms for analysis and intelligent decision-making.

[0046] For example, a soil moisture sensor deployed in a remote agricultural field measures the soil moisture level once a day. However, an unexpected dry spell may happen, which requires the irrigation system to provide more water to prevent crop stress. In such a case, a downlink command may be sent from a server to a sensor to decrease the interval between measurements. This type of communication is not expected to happen often and could be considered as an example of an infrequent downlink update in a NB-IoT scenario. In addition, for some of the data features, there may not need all the sensors to provide information, and it is enough if some can feedback, and others save the battery (energy) for more important application data.

[0047] In some scenarios, it is sufficient for the application server if a subset of a set of LPWA IoT UEs can communicate with the network. In an example of a such scenario, IoT sensors may have been spread over an area to collect and report environmental information (for example, temperature) to the server. For some information types (maybe not all the features) , it is enough for the application server if K out of M (K<M) available devices (for example, covering a specific area) can report the desired data. After such reporting, if more information is needed, the application server may trigger (some or certain) other devices to report the information as well.

[0048] Considering the above scenario, there might be some energy harvesting sensors that have low energy available and need to save energy for critical communication and / or require additional time to recharge their battery to be able to perform communication. As LPWA devices communicate less frequently with the application server (to save battery) and the available energy varies with time, the available energy of devices may not be available (or updated) at the application server. In view of the above, an improved paging method and UE behavior are needed to be further optimized to enhance the overall network behavior.

[0049] According to embodiments of the present disclosure, there is provided a scheme for energy consumption optimization. With this scheme, a first device (for example, a terminal device, such as an LPWA UE) receives, from a second device (for example, a network device) , a set of power saving configurations to be applied at a set of energy levels of the first device.

[0050] By allowing the first device to perform one or more of the above operations based on its energy level and the power saving configuration, power consumption at the first terminal device can be significantly reduced, and hence power saving at the first device is allowed. In this way, it is allowed to improve the flexibility and effectiveness of the communication performance.

[0051] Hereinafter, principles, and embodiments of the present disclosure will be described in detail below with reference to the accompanying drawings. Reference is first made to FIG. 1, which illustrates an example environment 100 in which example embodiments of the present disclosure can be implemented.

[0052] The environment 100, which may be a part of a communication network, comprises a terminal device 110 and a network device 120. To transmit data and / or control information, the terminal device 110 may perform communications with the network device 120. The communication between the terminal device 110 and the network device 120 may be direct or indirect. A link from the network device 120 to the terminal device 110 is referred to as a downlink (DL) , while a link from the terminal device 110 to the network device 120 is referred to as an uplink (UL) .

[0053] The terminal device 110 and / or the network device 120 may communicate with one or more further devices not shown in FIG. 1. In some embodiments, the environment 100 may further comprise an application server 130. In this case, the network device 120 may communicate with the application server 130.

[0054] Although the terminal device 110, the network device 120, and the application server 130 are described in the communication environment 100 of FIG. 1, embodiments of the present disclosure may equally apply to any other suitable communication devices in communication with one another. That is, embodiments of the present disclosure are not limited to the exemplary scenarios of FIG. 1. In this regard, it is noted that although the terminal device is schematically depicted as a mobile phone and the network device 120 is  schematically depicted as a base station in FIG. 1, it is understood that these depictions are exemplary in nature without suggesting any limitation. In other embodiments, the first device 110 and the network device 120 may be any other communication devices, for example, any other wireless communication devices.

[0055] It is to be understood that the particular number of various communication devices and the particular number of various communication links as shown in FIG. 1 is for illustration purpose only without suggesting any limitations. The communication environment 100 may include any suitable number of communication devices and any suitable number of communication links for implementing embodiments of the present disclosure. In addition, it should be appreciated that there may be various wireless as well as wireline communications (if needed) among all of the communication devices.

[0056] The communications in the environment 100 may follow any suitable communication standards or protocols, which are already in existence or to be developed in the future, such as Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) , long term evolution (LTE) , LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) , the fifth generation (5G) New Radio (NR) , 6G, Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi) and Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) standards, and employs any suitable communication technologies, including, for example, Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) , Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) , time division multiplexing (TDM) , frequency division multiplexing (FDM) , code division multiplexing (CDM) , Bluetooth, ZigBee, and machine type communication (MTC) , enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) , massive machine type communication (mMTC) , ultra-reliable low latency communication (URLLC) , Carrier Aggregation (CA) , Dual Connectivity (DC) , and New Radio Unlicensed (NR-U) technologies.

[0057] FIG. 2 illustrates a signaling flow 200 between a first device 201 and a second device 202 according to some example embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the signaling flow 200 will be described with reference to FIG. 1. In some example embodiments, the first device 201 may comprise the terminal device 110. Alternatively or additionally, the first device 201 may comprise a tag or a chipset. In some example embodiments, the second device 202 may comprise the network device 120. Alternatively or additionally, the second device 202 may comprise an activator or a chipset. The signaling flow 200 may further involve the application server 130.

[0058] As shown in FIG. 2, the second device 202 determines (205) a set of power saving  configurations to be applied at a set of energy levels (for example, also referred to as a set of metric levels) of the first device 201. Each of the set of power saving configurations may indicate at least one operation to be performed by the first device 201 at a corresponding energy level of the set of energy levels. For example, the at least one operation may be performed by the first device 201 during the idle / inactive mode, or even connected mode. The set of power saving configurations may enable terminal device classifications, such that the second device 202 may inform the first device 201 which power saving class should react to a received request message (for example, a paging message, an early paging message, or a WUS) . The first device 201 may be assumed to be not selfish and willing to communicate with the second device 202 when it is required provided that the first device 201 has a sufficient remaining battery level.

[0059] In some example embodiments, the set of power saving saving configurations may specify the terminal device behaviors based on the energy levels, such as monitoring and / or responding to a request message (for example, a paging message, an early paging message, or a WUS) , skipping monitoring and / or responding to a request message, performing a measurement, skipping performing a measurement, or transmitting data to the second device 202, which will be further discussed later in details when discussing the behaviors at the side of the first device 201. For example, the set of power saving saving configurations may specify whether or not and to which WUS / paging signal / early paging signal the first device 202 needs to react.

[0060] In some example embodiments, according to the set of power saving configurations, terminal device classifications may be enabled based on the energy levels. For example, the set of power saving configurations may comprise one or more of a set of power saving classes, a terminal device behavior setting and configuration for each power saving class, and the mapping between the set of power saving classes and the energy levels. The set of power saving classes may be indicated explicitly or implicitly.

[0061] The set of power saving configurations may be determined in a variety of ways. For example, depending on the data’s target destination (for example, for application data or RAN specific data) , the set of power saving configurations may be determined differently.

[0062] In some example embodiments, the second device 202 may coordinate the set of power saving configurations (or in other words, coordinate the terminal device classifications, or power saving mode behaviors) with the application server 130. In some implementations,  the server application 130 may provide the second device 202 with some additional information to assist the power saving configuration, such as a set of communication types, for which part of a plurality of terminal devices comprising the first device 201 need to communicate with the second device 202, a power level of one or more terminal devices comprising the first device 201 that need to communicate with the second device 202, a number or ratio of one or more terminal devices comprising the first device 201 that need to communicate with the second device 202, or one or more identifiers of one or more terminal devices comprising the first device 201 that need to communicate with the second device 202. As an example implementation, the server application 130 may indicate to the second device 202 to initiate a type of communication with one or more specific terminal devices (for example, indicated via their IDs, group IDs) , terminal devices having a certain power level / mode, a certain number or ratio of terminal devices, for example, in a cell / area. As an example, for application data, the application server 130 may inform the second device 202 that for a set of data communication types, it is enough if only some of the available terminal devices may provide (or receive) the information, and some further information exchange on the terminal device groups based on the power and number of terminal devices that need to provide (or receive) the information may be supported.

[0063] In some example embodiments, the set of power saving configurations may be determined by the second device 202 itself. As an example, for RAN specific data (for example, if the first device 201 requires some data (for example, target data, such as AI / machine language (ML) data for training) , the second device 202 may decide to classify the terminal devices, and determine the set of power saving configurations accordingly.

[0064] As described above, depending on the data’s target destination, the application server 130 and the second device 202 (for application data) or the second device 202 itself (for RAN specific data) may decide the terminal device classifications, that is, decide the power saving configurations. For example, in determining the power saving configurations, the terminal devices that are eligible for such classifications may need to be determined, as well as how many power saving classes should be defined (for example, 3 or 4) . Alternatively or additionally, there is also a need to determine based on which metric (s) associated with the energy levels, the terminal device classifications may be defined. As an example, the terminal device classifications may be defined based on the available battery status at the first device 201, either in an absolute level (e.g., amount of energy available) or at a relative level (e.g., percentage of remaining level with respect to the fully charged status,  such as X %of the battery) . As an implementation, the terminal device may be classified as available battery status being less than 20%of the battery, available battery status being between 20%to 60%of the battery, and available battery status being more than 60%of the battery. In this case, the above set of energy levels indicated in the set of power saving configurations may be associated with the available energy status of the first device 201. As another example, the terminal device classifications may be defined based on the required energy for data communication. In this case, the above set of energy levels indicated in the set of power saving configurations may be associated with the energy required for data transmission. As a further example, the terminal device classifications may be defined based on the type (for example, importance) of the data that needs to be transmitted. The data importance may be determined, for example, based on different paging messages and / or the data type that needs to be transmitted. In this case, the above set of energy levels indicated in the set of power saving configurations may be associated with the importance of data to be transmitted. Alternatively or additionally, the above one or more metrics may be combined when determining the terminal device classifications.

[0065] In some example embodiments, in the set of power saving configurations, a set of occasions for a request message (for example, a paging message, an early paging message, or a WUS) may be defined based on the set of energy levels. The occasion may indicate where (in which time and frequency) and with which periodicity to search for the request message. In this case, for different power saving classes, the request message may be transmitted using different occasions, for example, different time / frequency resources or different periodicities. It is to be understood that an example of the request message is the paging message and an example of the energy level is the UE battery level when discussing an example implementation, and other types of request messages and other one or more metrics associated with the energy level also apply.

[0066] As an example implementation, a set of paging occasions (Pos) may be mapped to a set of UE battery levels, as shown in the following Table 1. For example, the first line of Table 1 may be considered as the power saving class A, and there may be the mapping between the power saving class A and battery status 20%of the battery. Transmitting the request message in PO#1 may indicate the power saving class A via Table 1. In this case, the power saving classes may be indicated implicitly. The first device 201 with battery status below 20%of the battery may be configured to monitor PO#1, the first device 201 with battery status between 20-50%of the battery may be configured to monitor PO#2, and  the first device 201 with battery status above 60%of the battery may be configured to monitor PO#3.

[0068] Alternatively or additionally, the power saving classes may be indicated explicitly, as shown in the following Table 2. The first device 201 may be provided with a set of power saving configurations including a set of 3 power saving classes (e.g., power saving classes A, B, and C) . As an example, the power saving class A may be for the first device 201 with battery status below 20%of the battery, the power saving class B may be for the first device 201 with battery status between 20-50%of the battery, and the power saving class C is for the first device 201 with battery status above 60%of the battery. For the power saving class A, the first device 201 may be configured to monitor PO#1, for the power saving class B, the first device 201 may be configured to monitor PO#2, and for the power saving class C, the first device 201 may be configured to monitor PO#3.

[0069] Table 2: Example mapping between UE available battery levels and POs

[0070] In the example embodiments where the above Table 1 or Table 2 is applied, a paging identifier (ID) may be configured to a group of terminal devices including the first device 201 for the set of POs. Based on the available battery at the first device 201, the first device 201 may only be configured to monitor a paging occasion that is mapped to its battery level. For example, the PO that is mapped to the lower battery level may have a higher periodicity. Alternatively or additionally, considering that the first device 201 may need to wake up well before the PO to read a number of SSBs (around 1 to 3 SSBs) prior to the PO to ensure time-frequency synchronization with the second device 202 in order to be ready to decode the paging record in the physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH) , which may cause high  energy consumption for the first device 201, to overcome such issue, a tracking reference signal (TRS) may be configured to be near to the PO to complement the SSB for time-frequency synchronization, so the first device 201 may not be required to wake up well before. Thus, different mappings may be configured between available battery levels and POs in a case where an additional reference signal (RS) is provided or in a case where a PO is assigned with an allocated TRS for a low available battery level. In this case, the PO that is near a TRS may be associated with a terminal device with a low available battery level, while other PO (s) that don’t follow a TRS may be given for a terminal device with a high battery level.

[0071] In some example embodiments, in the set of power saving configurations, a set of paging IDs (or in other words, paging indications) of the request message (for example, a paging message, an early paging message, or a WUS) may be defined based on the set of energy levels. It is to be understood that an example of the request message is the paging message and an example of the energy level is the UE battery level when discussing an example implementation, and other types of request messages and other one or more metrics associated with the energy level also apply. In this case, a set of paging IDs (P-IDs) may be mapped to a set of battery levels, as exampled in the following Table 3. The second device 202 may configure a set of P-IDs which are mapped to a set of battery levels to a group of terminal devices comprising the first device 201. For each paging ID, the second device 202 may define paging occasions to the group of terminal devices. The paging occasions for the set of paging IDs may be overlapped or the same. In this scenario, the POs may be shared among the group of terminal devices but separate P-IDs may be transmitted to trigger the terminal devices with different battery levels. Alternatively or additionally, the power saving classes may be indicated explicitly or implicitly likewise.

[0072] Table 3: Example mapping between UE available battery levels and P-IDs

[0073] In the example implementations where the request message comprises the early paging message, the terminal devices may be configured with different early paging messages similarly as described above. Alternatively or additionally, the content of the early paging message may provide information indicating that the terminal devices with  different battery levels may skip a certain number of POs.

[0074] In some example embodiments, the set of power saving configurations may indicate a number of request messages (and / or a number of occasions for the request messages, also referred to as monitor occasions) that the first device 201 can skip. For example, the first device 201 may be configured with a limit for how many times it can skip, for a certain battery level, one or more of monitoring of the number of request messages, skipping monitoring of the number of monitor occasions, skipping performing a measurement of the number of request messages, or skipping performing a measurement of the number of monitor occasions. As an example, for the available battery status being 20%of the battery, the first device 201 may be configured to skip up to X consecutive times, and for the available battery status being 60%of the battery, the first device 201 may be configured to skip up to Y, where X may be typically higher than Y. In this case, it is allowed to ensure the second device 202 may still reach the first device 201 with a certain reliability. As an example implementation, it is possible to implement this embodiment together with the above embodiment described with reference to Table 1, in case it is assumed that for high battery levels, the paging occasions to be monitored may include also the occasions to be monitored for the low battery level (s) . For example, in a case where the available battery status is below 20%of the battery, the first device 201 may be configured to monitor PO#1 and skip X times PO#2 and PO#3, and in a case where the available battery status is between 20%and 60%of the battery, the first device 201 may be configured to monitor PO#1 and / or PO#2 and skip Y times PO#3, and in a case where the available battery status is above 60%of the battery, the first device 201 may be configured to monitor PO#1, PO#2, and / or PO#3.

[0075] In some example embodiments, the set of power saving configurations may indicate a mapping between a set of energy levels, either in absolute or in relative measure, and a set of response probabilities for the request message. For example, the network may define occasions for the request message with a common paging ID. It is to be understood that an example of the request message is the paging message and an example of the energy level is the UE battery level when discussing an example implementation, and other types of request messages and other one or more metrics associated with the energy level also apply. As an example implementation, the network may configure a set of paging response probabilities to be mapped to a set of battery levels, where the paging response probability reflects the fact that the first device 201 decides whether to perform a paging response based on the paging response probability corresponding to its battery level. The first device 201 may be  configured to determine whether to respond to the request message based on the paging response probability after receiving the paging message. Alternatively or additionally, first device 201 may be configured to determine whether to perform a measurement based on the paging response probability after receiving the paging message.

[0076] After determining the set of power saving configurations as described above, the second device 202 transmits (210) the set of power saving configurations to the first device 201. Accordingly, the first device 201 receives the set of power saving configurations from the second device 202.

[0077] The second device 202 may determine a target power saving class of a set of power saving classes to be paged, or a target energy level of the set of energy levels to be paged. The target power saving class may correspond to the target energy level. As an example, the target power saving class or the target energy level may be obtained from the application server 130. As another example, the target power saving class or the target energy level may be determined by the second device 202 itself. On the basis of the determined target power saving class or the determined target energy level, the second device 202 may transmit a request message (for example, a paging message, an early paging message, or a WUS) to the terminal device accordingly. In the example embodiments where the power saving configuration with the target energy level indicates a mapping between the target energy level and an occasion for transmitting the request message, when the first device 201 is in the idle / inactive mode or even in connected mode, the second device 202 may transmit, to the first device 201, the request message on the occasion. In the example embodiments where the power saving configuration with the target energy level indicates a mapping between the target energy level and an ID of the request message, when the first device 201 is in the idle / inactive mode or even in connected mode, the second device 202 may transmit, to the first device 201, the request message based on the ID (i.e., transmitting the request message comprising the ID) . In this case, the request message may indicate the power saving class informing the first device 201 which power saving class should react to the received request. Different request messages may correspond to different requested power saving classes.

[0078] As shown in FIG. 2, the first device determines (215) an energy level of the first device 201. For example, the first device 201 may determine its available battery status. As another example, the first device 201 may determine the energy required for data transmission. In this case, the first device 201 may estimate the required energy for data transmission (for example, based on the measured path loss and expected data packet to be  transmitted) . For example, if the first device 201 is a low mobile UE, it may estimate the required energy for data packet transmission by using the previous estimated pathloss and / or transmission. Alternatively or additionally, the first device 201 may take into account the availability of additional RS (e.g., if TRS presence is indicated in system information block (SIB) 17) for determining the required energy for the data transmission. As a further example, the first device 201 may determine the importance of data to be transmitted. In this case, depending on the importance of the data to be transmitted, the monitoring and / or responding to the paging / WUS signals may be skipped. For example, for very important data, the monitoring and / or responding to the paging / WUS signals may not be skipped. for important data, the monitoring and / or responding to the paging / WUS signals may be skipped with a probability. for not important data, the monitoring and / or responding to the paging / WUS signals may be totally skipped.

[0079] Then, the first device 201 determines (220) , based on the determined energy level, a power saving configuration among the set of power saving configurations. The first device 201 may apply the configuration according to the determined energy level and its available power. In other words, the first device 201 may perform a mapping between its current condition and the power saving configuration. Then, the first device 201 performs (225) at least one operation indicated by the determined power saving configuration. For example, when the first device 201 is in the idle / inactive mode or even in connected mode, based on the determined energy level and the mapping between power saving classes and energy levels, the first device 201 may select the appropriate power saving configuration and behave correspondingly.

[0080] In the example embodiments where the determined power saving configuration indicates a mapping between the determined energy level and an occasion for monitoring the request message, the first device 201 may perform one or more of monitoring the request message on the occasion, responding to the request message, or performing a measurement on the occasion. In this case, the first device 201 may monitor the occasion mapped to its power saving class for the potential request message.

[0081] In the example embodiments where the determined power saving configuration indicates a mapping between the determined energy level and an ID of the request message, the first device 201 may perform one or more of monitoring the request message based on the ID, responding to the request message, or performing a measurement based on the ID. For example, in case its power saving class mapped to the determined energy level matches  the requested power saving class indicated in the request message, the first device 201 may transmit data to the second device 202 in response to the request message. As another example, if the power saving class has not been indicated in the request message, the first device 201 may then decide not the react to the received request message. In other words, if there is a different power saving class indicated in the request message, the first device 201 may not respond to the request message.

[0082] In the example embodiments where the determined power saving configuration indicates a mapping between the determined energy level and a response probability for the request message, the first device 201 may perform one or more of determining whether to respond to the request message based on the response probability after receiving the request message, or determining whether to perform a measurement based on the response probability after receiving the request message. As an example, after receiving the paging message, the first device 201 may decide whether to perform a paging response based on the response probability corresponding to its energy level, and if the response probability corresponding to the current energy level is higher than a threshold, the first device 201 may respond to the paging message or perform a measurement, otherwise, it may skip.

[0083] In the example embodiments where the determined power saving configuration indicates a number of request messages and / or a number of monitor occasions that the first device 201 can skip, the first device 201 may perform one or more of skipping monitoring of the number of request messages or the number of monitor occasions, skipping performing a measurement of the number of request messages, or skipping performing a measurement of the number of monitor occasions.

[0084] In some example embodiments, after receiving the paging message, the first device 201 may transmit some data (for example, target information) to the second device 202, for example, without taking into account the available power (energy) . In this case, in case of the need for the target information, the first device 201 may be configured with a specific paging message to transmit the target information. The target information may be some information needed by the application server 130 (or the second device 202) which is needed from the first device 201, and the application server 103 (or the second device 202) may want the first device 201 to transmit it without taking into account the available power (energy) .

[0085] In some example embodiments, the first device 201 may transmit, to the second device 202, the determined energy level. Alternatively or additionally, the first device 201  may report the power saving class corresponding to the determined energy level to the second device 202.

[0086] According to some embodiments with reference to FIG. 2, for example, in the LPWA IoT context where energy harvesting devices may not have sufficient battery level to respond to every request message, and especially, for some use cases where uplink data transmissions in response to the request message are not needed from all available devices, but it is enough to receive responses from a subset of available devices, the power saving configurations enable low battery devices to spend less energy on monitoring and / or responding to paging signals, WUS signals, early paging occasions, measurements, and data transmission. Thus, it is allowed to optimize the performance of LPWA UEs.

[0087] FIG. 3 illustrates an example communication process according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the process 300 will be described with reference to FIG. 1. Accordingly, the UE 301 may be an example of the terminal device 110, the gNB 302 may be an example of the network device 120, and the application 303 may be an example of the application server 130.

[0088] As shown in FIG. 3, at 304, the gNB 302 and the application server 303 make a coordination on a set of power saving configurations. At 306, the gNB 302 transmits the set of UE power saving configurations to the UE 301. At 308, the UE 301 identifies the energy level (for example, associated with one or more of the available battery status, the required energy for data transmission or the data information of data to be transmitted) , maps the identified energy level to a power saving configuration of the set of power saving configurations, and then behaves based on the mapped power saving configuration.

[0089] At 310, the application server 303 determines which power saving class to be indicated with DL alert, and then indicates this (for example, power saving class #x ) to the gNB 302 at 312. At 314, the gNB 302 determines which settings to be used. For example, the gNB 302 may determine the type of the DL alert (also referred to as a request message) , such as a paging message, a WUS, or an early paging message. Alternatively or additionally, the gNB 302 may determine to page the power saving class #x and the corresponding power saving configuration to be used for paging. At 316, the gNB 302 transmits, to the UE 301, the DL alert based on the power saving class #x.

[0090] At the UE side, the UE 301 may only monitor a PO which is mapped to its energy level for potential DL alert, and at 318, react to the DL alert, such as responding to the DL  alert (and decoding the DL alert) . Alternatively or additionally, at 320, the UE 301 may transmit data to the gNB 302, and the data may be then transmitted to the application server 303. Alternatively or additionally, the UE 301 may consider reporting its energy level (or power saving class level (also referred to as power saving mode level, or associated power saving configuration number) to the network.

[0091] Operations and features as described above with reference to FIG. 2 are likewise applicable to the process 300 and have similar effects. For the purpose of simplification, the details will be omitted.

[0092] FIG. 4 illustrates a flowchart 400 of a method implemented at a terminal device according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purpose of discussion, the method 400 will be described from the perspective of the first device 201 with reference to FIG. 2.

[0093] At block 410, the first device 201 receives, from a second device 202, a set of power saving configurations to be applied at a set of energy levels of the first device 201. Each of the set of power saving configurations indicates at least one operation to be performed by the first device 201 at a corresponding energy level of the set of energy levels.
