[0001] The present disclosure relates generally to a mobile abattoir apparatus and attendant components and systems. Further related are methods for manufacturing and utilising the mobile abattoir and its components.BACKGROUND

[0002] To obtain animal meat for consumption, animals are typically transported to abattoirs. Often, this requires travel over significant distances. This increases costs, causes inhumane treatment, and substantially diminishes the quality of the end product.

[0003] During transportation, animals are generally placed in confined areas without sustenance. Being in close confinement causes bruising of the animals and discoloration of the carcass that is prepared. Animals arrive at a slaughterhouse in a highly stressed condition and are subjected to further stress while there. All of these factors significantly reduce animal welfare, as well as the value and desirability of the meat that is produced.

[0004] In spite of such clear disadvantages, many countries require animals to be slaughtered and processed through a regulated abattoir. If animals are slaughtered outside of a regulated abattoir (e.g., on a farm or small holding), this is considered to be unregulated “home kill”, and the meat is barred from being sold. The result is that standard transportation and standard abattoirs continue to be used, and continue to cause significant negative impacts to animals as well as the resulting meat.

[0005] It is clear that there is a critical need for new apparatuses, systems, and methods which allow more humane, hygienic, efficient, and cost effective meat production.SUMMARY

[0006] The present disclosure provides a highly advantageous mobile abattoir apparatus, as well as related components, systems, and methods.

[0007] In one aspect, the present disclosure encompasses a mobile abattoir apparatus comprising:(a) a chiller vehicle, the chiller vehicle comprising:(i) a crane adapted for lifting an animal carcass into a carcass processing area;(ii) an assembly adapted for enclosing the carcass processing area, the assembly comprising a roof extension engaged with one or more retractable screens;(iii) optionally, a tailgate adapted to provide an effective floor or partial floor for the carcass processing area when the tailgate is in a lowered position;(iv) at least one cooling area adapted for storing portions obtained from the animal carcass; and(b) optionally, a service vehicle.

CLAIMS:

1. A mobile abattoir apparatus comprising:(a) a chiller vehicle, the chiller vehicle comprising:(i) a crane adapted for lifting an animal carcass into a carcass processing area;(ii) an assembly adapted for enclosing the carcass processing area, the assembly comprising a roof extension engaged with one or more retractable screens;(iii) optionally, a tailgate adapted to provide an effective floor or partial floor for the carcass processing area when the tailgate is in a lowered position;(iv) at least one cooling area adapted for storing portions obtained from the animal carcass; and(b) optionally, a service vehicle.

2. The mobile abattoir apparatus of claim 1, wherein the chiller vehicle comprises one or more of:(a) a trailer with refrigeration capacity and / or cool storage capacity;(b) a truck with refrigeration capacity and / or cool storage capacity;(c) a trailer or truck assisted by hydraulic power take off;(d) a box truck trailer or a semi-trailer; or(e) a box truck or a semi-trailer truck.

3. The mobile abattoir apparatus of claim 1 or claim 2, wherein the chiller vehicle includes one or more of:(a) at least one cooling area adapted for storing carcass portions;(b) fan forced cooling;(c) one or more meat rails adapted for holding carcass portions; or(d) one or more meat racks adapted for holding carcass portions.

The mobile abattoir apparatus of any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein the chiller vehicle includes one or more of:(a) a knocking box;(b) a carcass cradle; or(c) hand wash stations, hoses, hose reels, inspection areas, sterilisers, water heaters, water pressure pumps, water stations, or any combination thereof.

The mobile abattoir apparatus of any one of claims 1 to 4, wherein the chiller vehicle includes one or more of:(a) supplementary lifting devices;(b) booms, hoists, pulleys, winches, or any combination thereof;(c) a ramp adapted for loading or unloading the chiller vehicle and / or the service vehicle;(d) one or more storage areas for slaughtering and / or butchering implements; or(e) a floor extension adapted to provide an effective floor or partial floor for the carcass processing area.

6. The mobile abattoir apparatus of any one of claims 1 to 5, which comprises one or more of:(a) the crane comprises a truck mounted or trailer mounted crane;(b) the crane is positioned in a rear portion of the chiller vehicle; or(c) the crane is adapted for hydraulic lifting and lowering.

The mobile abatoir apparatus of any one of claims 1 to 8, which comprises one or more of:(a) the one or more retractable screens include one or more of: covers, curtains, panels, sheets, tarps, shutters, moveable walls, and any combination thereof;(b) the one or more retractable screens are retractable upwards by rolling and / or folding the screen(s) to a retracted position;(c) the one or more retractable screens are extendable downwards by unrolling and / or unfolding the screen(s) to an extended position.; or(d) the one or more retractable screens are extendable sidewards by sliding and / or rolling the screen(s) along a perimeter or part of a perimeter of the roof extension.

10. The mobile abatoir apparatus of any one of claims 1 to 9, which comprises one or more of:(a) the tailgate is adapted for hydraulic lifting and lowering;(b) the tailgate is adapted to be engaged with one or more of: a carcass cradle, a hand wash station, a knocking box, or any combination thereof;(c) the tailgate is adapted to be used with a tailgate extension; or(d) the service vehicle is adapted for auxiliary storage and / or auxiliary facilities.

11. A mobile abatoir system comprising:(a) a chiller vehicle, the chiller vehicle comprising:(i) a crane adapted for lifting an animal carcass into a carcass processing area;(ii) an assembly adapted for enclosing the carcass processing area, the assembly comprising a roof extension engaged with one or more retractable screens;(iii) optionally, a tailgate adapted to provide an effective floor or partial floor for the carcass processing area when the tailgate is in a lowered position;(iv) at least one cooling area adapted for storing portions obtained from the animal carcass; and(b) optionally, a service vehicle; wherein: with the chiller vehicle in a parked position, the roof extension is extended rearwards to define the carcass processing area beneath the roof extension; with the crane of the chiller vehicle, the animal carcass is lifted into the carcass processing area; with the animal carcass put in place, the carcass processing area is enveloped by one or more retractable screens that are engaged with the roof extension; and within the carcass processing area, the carcass is processed to obtain carcass portions.

12. The mobile abattoir system of claim 11, which includes one or more of:(a) the carcass portions are cooled in at least one cooling area of the chiller vehicle; or(b) the carcass portions are transported in the chiller vehicle to a site for further processing.

13. The mobile abattoir system of claim 11 or claim 12, wherein the chiller vehicle comprises one or more of:(a) a trailer with refrigeration capacity and / or cool storage capacity;(b) a truck with refrigeration capacity and / or cool storage capacity;(c) a trailer or truck assisted by hydraulic power take off;(d) a box truck trailer or a semi-trailer; or(e) a box truck or a semi-trailer truck.

14. The mobile abattoir system of any one of claims 11 to 13, wherein the chiller vehicle includes one or more of:(a) at least one cooling area adapted for storing carcass portions;(b) fan forced cooling;(c) one or more meat rails adapted for holding carcass portions; or(d) one or more meat racks adapted for holding carcass portions.

15. The mobile abattoir system of any one of claims 11 to 14, wherein the chiller vehicle includes one or more of:(a) a knocking box;(b) a carcass cradle; or(c) hand wash stations, hoses, hose reels, inspection areas, sterilisers, water heaters, water pressure pumps, water stations, or any combination thereof.

16. The mobile abattoir system of any one of claims 11 to 15, wherein the chiller vehicle includes one or more of:(a) supplementary lifting devices;(b) booms, hoists, pulleys, winches, or any combination thereof;(c) a ramp adapted for loading or unloading the chiller vehicle and / or the service vehicle;(d) one or more storage areas for slaughtering and / or butchering implements; or(e) a floor extension adapted to provide an effective floor or partial floor for the carcass processing area.

17. The mobile abattoir system of any one of claims 11 to 16, which comprises one or more of:(a) the crane comprises a truck mounted or trailer mounted crane;(b) the crane is positioned in a rear portion of the chiller vehicle; or(c) the crane is adapted for hydraulic lifting and lowering.

The mobile abattoir system of any one of claims 11 to 18, which comprises one or more of:(a) the roof extension comprises a flat or generally flat configuration;(b) the roof extension comprises a housing configuration;(c) The roof extension is engaged with one or more roof rails to allow shifting of the roof extension forwardly or rearwardly relative to the chiller vehicle;(d) the roof extension is engaged with a set of legs which allow a raising or lowering of the roof extension relative to the chiller vehicle;(e) the roof extension is adapted to cantilever beyond the rear portion of the chiller vehicle;(f) the roof extension is lockable in an extended position; or(g) the roof extension is lockable in a retracted position.

20. The mobile abattoir system of any one of claims 11 to 19, which comprises one or more of:(a) the one or more retractable screens include one or more of: covers, curtains, panels, sheets, tarps, shutters, moveable walls, and any combination thereof;(b) the one or more retractable screens are retractable upwards by rolling and / or folding the screen(s) to a retracted position;(c) the one or more retractable screens are extendable downwards by unrolling and / or unfolding the screen(s) to an extended position.; or(d) the one or more retractable screens are extendable sidewards by sliding and / or rolling the screen(s) along a perimeter or part of a perimeter of the roof extension.

21. The mobile abattoir system of any one of claims 11 to 20, which comprises one or more of:(a) the tailgate is adapted for hydraulic lifting and lowering;(b) the tailgate is adapted to be engaged with one or more of: a carcass cradle, a hand wash station, a knocking box, or any combination thereof;(c) the tailgate is adapted to be used with a tailgate extension; or(d) the service vehicle is adapted for auxiliary storage and / or auxiliary facilities.

22. A method of utilising a mobile abattoir apparatus of a preceding aspect, the method comprising:(i) with the chiller vehicle in a parked position, extending rearwards the roof extension to define a carcass processing area beneath the roof extension, and optionally, lowering the tailgate of the chiller vehicle to provide an effective floor or partial floor for the carcass processing area;(ii) with the crane of the chiller vehicle, lifting an animal carcass into the carcass processing area; and(ii) with the animal carcass in position, enveloping the carcass processing area by the one or more retractable screens that are engaged with the roof extension.

23. A method of utilising a mobile abattoir apparatus of a preceding aspect, the method comprising:(i) with the chiller vehicle in a parked position, extending rearwards the roof extension to define a carcass processing area beneath the roof extension, and optionally, lowering the tailgate of the chiller vehicle to provide an effective floor or partial floor for the carcass processing area;(ii) with the crane of the chiller vehicle, lifting an animal carcass into the carcass processing area;(ii) with the animal carcass in position, enveloping the carcass processing area by the one or more retractable screens that are engaged with the roof extension; and(iii) within the carcass processing area, processing the carcass to obtain carcass portions.

24. The method of claim 22 or claim 23, wherein the lifting by the crane provides the animal carcass into a carcass cradle in the carcass processing area.

25. The method of any one of claims 22 to 24, wherein the processing of the animal carcass includes one or more of: removing head, removing hocks, removing skin, removing guts, removing cheeks, removing tongue, quartering the carcass, and any combination thereof.

26. The method of any one of claims 22 to 25, wherein the processing of the animal carcass includes one or more of: separating edible offal from the carcass, separating inedible offal from the carcass, separating pet food parts from the carcass, and any combination thereof.

27. The method of any one of claims 22 to 25, wherein the method further comprises transitioning the carcass portions to be retained to at least one cooling area of the chiller vehicle.

28. The method of any one of claims 22 to 27, wherein the method further comprises transitioning carcass portions to be discarded to a service vehicle.

29. The method of any one of claims 22 to 28, wherein the method further comprises storing the carcass portions on one or more meat rails and / or one or more meat racks in the at least one cooling area.

30. The method of any one of claims 22 to 29, wherein the method further comprises washing down the carcass processing area.

31. The method of any one of claims 22 to 30, wherein the method further comprises transporting the carcass portions in the chiller vehicle to a site for further processing.

32. A roof extension for a chiller vehicle, the roof extension comprising:(i) a flat or generally flat portion, this portion being adapted as roofing for a carcass processing area;(ii) one or more engagement means for at least one retractable screen, the at least one retractable screen being adapted to be an outer partition, or part of an outer partition, for the carcass processing area; and(iii) at least one roof rail that is engaged with the roof extension, the at least one roof rail allowing a shift of the roof extension forwardly and toward the front portion of the chiller vehicle and a shift of the roof extension rearwardly and out from the rear portion of the vehicle.

33. A roof extension for a chiller vehicle, the roof extension comprising:(i) a housing, this housing being adapted as roofing for a carcass processing area;(ii) one or more engagement means for at least one retractable screen, the at least one retractable screen being adapted to be an outer partition, or part of an outer partition, for the carcass processing area; and(iii) at least one roof rail that is engaged with the roof extension, the at least one roof rail allowing a shift of the roof extension forwardly and in toward the front portion of the chiller vehicle and rearwardly and out from the rear portion of the chiller vehicle.

34. The roof extension of claim 32, wherein the flat or generally flat portion comprises one or more slats supported by framing.

35. The roof extension of any one of claims 33, wherein the housing comprises a top portion, a front portion, and two side portions.

36. The roof extension of any one of claims 32 to 35, wherein the roof extension is engaged with two retractable screens.

37. The roof extension of any one of claims 32 to 36, wherein the one or more retractable screens include one or more of: covers, curtains, panels, sheets, tarps, shutters, moveable walls, or any combination thereof.

38. The roof extension of any one of claims 32 to 37, which includes one or more of:(a) the one or more retractable screens are retractable upwards by rolling and / or folding the screen(s);(b) the one or more retractable screens are extendable downwards by unrolling and / or unfolding the screen(s);(c) the one or more retractable screens are extendable sidewards by sliding and / or rolling the screen(s) along a perimeter or part of a perimeter of the roof extension.

39. The roof extension of any one of claims 32 to 38, wherein the at least one roof rail allows shifting of the roof extension rearwardly and so as to cantilever beyond the rear portion of the chiller vehicle.

40. The roof extension of any one of claims 32 to 39, wherein the roof extension is engaged with a set of legs which allow an upward raising of the roof extension and a downward lowering of the roof extension.

41. The roof extension of claim 39, which includes one or more of:(a) each leg includes an upper linkage proximate to the roof extension;(b) each leg includes an upper linkage proximate to a roof rail;(c) each leg includes a lower linkage proximate to a mount for the chiller vehicle; or(d) each leg is positioned parallel or essentially parallel to each other leg.

42. The roof extension of claim 41, wherein:(a) the lower linkage is a pivoting linkage or a hinging linkage; or(b) upper linkage is a pivoting linkage or a hinging linkage.

43. The roof extension of claim 42, wherein the pivoting linkage comprises at least one of: pin, bolt, boss, bush, disc, finger, gasket, nut, ring, rivet, washer, or any combination thereof.

44. The roof extension of any one of claims 41 to 43, wherein the lower linkage and the upper linkage of each leg provides for a parallel motion, such that the leg(s) can facilitate movement of the roof extension upwardly from the chiller vehicle, and the leg(s) can facilitate movement of the roof extension downwardly towards the chiller vehicle.

45. The roof extension of any one of claims 40 to 44, wherein opposing legs are engaged with opposing mounts on the chiller vehicle.

46. The roof extension of claim 45, wherein the opposing legs are further engaged with opposing roof rails of the roof extension.

47. The roof extension of claim 46, wherein an engagement of the opposing legs with the opposing roof rails allows the roof extension to shift rearwardly and cantilever beyond the rear portion of the chiller vehicle.

48. The roof extension of claim 46 or claim 47, the engagement of a leg and a roof rail is mediated by a guide.

49. The roof extension of claim 48, wherein the guide is engaged with one or more wheels or rollers that are positioned on the roof rail.

50. A method of producing a mobile abattoir apparatus, the method comprising:(i) providing a chiller vehicle, the chiller vehicle comprising a crane adapted for lifting an animal carcass into a carcass processing area; the chiller vehicle further comprising at least one cooling area adapted for storing animal carcass portions;(ii) engaging a roof extension to the chiller vehicle, the roof extension being engageable with one or more retractable screens, and the roof extension and the one or more screens being adapted for enclosing the carcass processing area; and optionally, the chiller vehicle further comprising a tailgate adapted to provide an effective floor or partial floor for the carcass processing area when the tailgate is in a lowered position.

51. A method of producing a mobile abattoir apparatus, the method comprising:(i) providing a chiller vehicle, the chiller vehicle comprising at least one cooling area for storing carcass portions;(ii) engaging a crane to the chiller vehicle, the crane being adapted for lifting an animal carcass into a carcass processing area;(iii) engaging a roof extension to the chiller vehicle, the roof extension being engageable with one or more retractable screens, and the roof extension and the one or more screens being adapted for enclosing the carcass processing area; and optionally, the chiller vehicle further comprising a tailgate adapted to provide an effective floor or partial floor for the carcass processing area when the tailgate is in a lowered position.

52. The method of claim 50 or claim 51, wherein the chiller vehicle comprises one or more of:(a) a trailer with refrigeration capacity and / or cool storage capacity;(b) a truck with refrigeration capacity and / or cool storage capacity;(c) a trailer or truck assisted by hydraulic power take off;(d) a box truck trailer or a semi-trailer; or(e) a box truck or a semi-trailer truck.

53. The method of any one of claims 50 to 52, wherein the chiller vehicle includes one or more of:(a) at least one cooling area adapted for storing carcass portions;(b) fan forced cooling;(c) one or more meat rails adapted for holding carcass portions; or(d) one or more meat racks adapted for holding carcass portions.

54. The method of any one of claims 50 to 53, wherein the chiller vehicle includes one or more of:(a) a knocking box;(b) a carcass cradle; or(c) hand wash stations, hoses, hose reels, inspection areas, sterilisers, water heaters, water pressure pumps, water stations, or any combination thereof.

55. The method of any one of claims 50 to 54, wherein the chiller vehicle includes one or more of:(a) supplementary lifting devices;(b) booms, hoists, pulleys, winches, or any combination thereof;(c) a ramp adapted for loading or unloading the chiller vehicle and / or the service vehicle;(d) one or more storage areas for slaughtering and / or butchering implements; or(e) a floor extension adapted to provide an effective floor or partial floor for the carcass processing area.

56. The method of any one of claims 50 to 55, which comprises one or more of: (a) the crane comprises a truck mounted or trailer mounted crane;(b) the crane is positioned in a rear portion of the chiller vehicle; or(c) the crane is adapted for hydraulic lifting and lowering.
