Abstract

Example embodiments of the present disclosure relate to devices, methods, and computer storage medium for communication. A terminal device receives, from an LMF, a first measurement associated with a PRU with a known location, where the first measurement is determined based on a second measurement of the PRU and at least one parameter of training data of a positioning model deployed at the terminal device. The terminal device determines an inferred location of the PRU and further determines a monitoring metric of the positioning model. As such, a first measurement which is based on the at least one parameter of training data can be obtained by the terminal device, and accordingly the model performance monitoring is enabled.

[0044] The term “circuitry” used herein may refer to hardware circuits and / or combinations of hardware circuits and software. For example, the circuitry may be a combination of analog and / or digital hardware circuits with software / firmware. As a further example, the circuitry may be any portions of hardware processors with software including digital signal processor (s) , software, and memory (ies) that work together to cause an apparatus, such as a terminal device or a network device, to perform various functions. In a still further example, the circuitry may be hardware circuits and or processors, such as a microprocessor or a portion of a microprocessor, that requires software / firmware for operation, but the software may not be present when it is not needed for operation. As used herein, the term circuitry  also covers an implementation of merely a hardware circuit or processor (s) or a portion of a hardware circuit or processor (s) and its (or their) accompanying software and / or firmware.

[0045] As used herein, the singular forms “a” , “an” and “the” are intended to include the plural forms as well, unless the context clearly indicates otherwise. The term “includes” and its variants are to be read as open terms that mean “includes, but is not limited to. ” The term “based on” is to be read as “based at least in part on. ” The term “one embodiment” and “an embodiment” are to be read as “at least one embodiment. ” The term “another embodiment” is to be read as “at least one other embodiment. ” The terms “first, ” “second, ” and the like may refer to different or same objects. Other definitions, explicit and implicit, may be included below.

[0046] In some examples, values, procedures, or apparatus are referred to as “best, ” “lowest, ” “highest, ” “minimum, ” “maximum, ” or the like. It will be appreciated that such descriptions are intended to indicate that a selection among many used functional alternatives can be made, and such selections need not be better, smaller, higher, or otherwise preferable to other selections.

[0047] The terminal device or the network device may have AI or ML capability. It generally includes a model which has been trained from numerous collected data for a specific function, and can be used to predict some information.

[0048] As used herein, a model may be equivalent to at least one of the following: an AI / ML model, an ML model, an AI model, a data-driven, a data processing model, an algorithm, a functionality, a procedure, a process, an entity, a function, a feature, a feature group, a model identifier (ID) , an ID, a functionality ID, a configuration ID, a scenario ID, a site ID, or a dataset ID. As a result, the above terms may be used interchangeably. An “ID” may refer to an identifier, an identity, an identification, etc.

[0049] In some embodiments, the model may be represented by or associated with a channel, a resource, a resource set, a reference signal (RS) resource, an RS resource set, an RS port, a set of RS ports, an RS port ID, or a set of RS port IDs.

[0050] In some embodiments, the model may comprise a set of weights values that may be learned during training, e.g., for a specific architecture or configuration, where a set of weights values may also be called a parameter set.

[0051] In some embodiments, the model may be used to predict a target cell, or measurements of a set of beams of a set of candidate cells in future based on at least historical  measurements (e.g., layer 1 (L1) -reference signal received power (RSRP) , L1-signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) ) of a set of beams of a set of candidate cells.

[0052] In some embodiments, an input of the AI / ML model (i.e., AI input) may refer to the input of a model and indicate data inputted into the model, which may be equivalent to data.

[0053] In some embodiments, an output of AI / ML model (i.e., AI output) may refers to the output of a model and indicate result (s) outputted by the model, which is equivalent to label / data.

[0054] In some embodiments, “ground truth” , “ground truth label” , “ground truth label of data” , “input label” , “input data” and “data” can be used interchangeably.

[0055] In some embodiments, a ground truth label of data (or ground-truth label) for monitoring or training the ML model (i.e., AI output) may refers to the authoritative, accepted data, or true answer or outcome for AI / ML model.

[0056] In some embodiments, the ground truth can be interpreted as actual / factual (i.e. actual / factual measured) data / values / results / collections / parameters, which can be used as reference, compared to prediction or inference.

[0057] In some embodiments, the PRU is a normal terminal device with known location at some network device (e.g., LMF or gNB) .

[0058] AI / ML techniques play a significant role in enhancing the accuracy and reliability of positioning, which is particularly useful in indoor environments where global position system (GPS) signals might be weak or unavailable.

[0059] An AI / ML model may be deployed at a terminal device (such as a UE) , a network device (such as one or more gNBs or TRPs) , or a core network entity (such as an LMF) . The AI / ML model may be used for positioning, e.g. determining a positon (or location) of a UE. Some cases (case 1, case 2b, and case 3b below) are discussed as direct AI / ML positioning, and some other cases (case 2a, and case 3a below) are discussed as AI / ML assisted positioning:

[0060] · (1st priority) Case 1: UE-based positioning with UE-side model, direct AI / ML positioning.

[0061] · (2nd priority) Case 2b: UE-assisted / LMF-based positioning with LMF-side model, direct AI / ML positioning.

[0062] · (1st priority) Case 3b: NG-RAN node assisted positioning with LMF-side model,  direct AI / ML positioning.

[0063] · (2nd priority) Case 2a: UE-assisted / LMF-based positioning with UE-side model, AI / ML assisted positioning.

[0064] · (1st priority) Case 3a: NG-RAN node assisted positioning with gNB-side model, AI / ML assisted positioning.

[0065] An enhancement for the accuracy of the AI / ML based positioning is a work item (WI) in release 19. An AI / ML model can be deployed at UE side, gNB side, or LMF side. A model input may be integrated information of timing, power and phase, such as channel impulse response (CIR) , power delay profile (PDP) , or delay of path (DP) . A model output may be a UE location (i.e., direct AI / ML positioning) or an intermediate measurement (i.e., AI / ML assisted positioning) .

[0066] For an AI / ML assisted positioning, the candidate output may include timing information of light of sight (LOS) or non-line of sight (NLOS) indicator, timing information like reference signal time difference (RSTD) , downlink reference signal time of arrival (DL-RTOA) , or UE Rx-Tx time difference for DL positioning, or uplink reference signal time of arrival (UL-RTOA) or gNB Rx-Tx time difference for UL positioning.

[0067] Model performance monitoring is a critical step to ensure that the running model is efficient in the current environment. If the AI / ML model is deployed at UE side, both UE and LMF can perform the model performance monitoring, with or without the collected ground truth. If the ground truth is required to perform model performance monitoring, it is tricky to obtain the ground truth at UE side, since if the UE is capable to obtain the reliable location, it is questionable that why the AI / ML model is activated / triggered. In some cases, the PRU may be considered to assist the model performance monitoring for UE side model as the PRU’s location is known at LMF side. In this event, how to enable the model performance monitoring at UE side should be studied in detail.

[0068] Embodiments of the present disclosure provide a solution of communication. In the solution, a terminal device for model performance monitoring may receive measurement data from the LMF, and the measurement data may be determined based on the reported parameter of measurement for input from target UE side. As such, the measurement data can be used as model input and a corresponding model output can be obtained. Therefore, the model performance monitoring can be enabled at the terminal device assisted by a PRU with a known location. Principles and implementations of the present disclosure will be  described in detail below with reference to the figures.

[0069] FIG. 1A illustrates an example communication network 100 in which some embodiments of the present disclosure can be implemented. The communication network 100 may also be called as a network environment, a network system, a communication environment, a communication system, or the like, the present disclosure does not limit for this aspect. The communication network 100 includes a terminal device 110, multiple network devices 120-1 to 120-N, and an LMF 130. The communication network 100 further includes a PRU 140 and a network device 150 which serves the PRU 140. It should be appreciated that the LMF 130 may be a location server, which is located in the access network or in a core network.

[0070] In the present disclosure, there may be a positioning model deployed at the terminal device 110, for example, the terminal device 110 may also be referred to as a target terminal device or a target UE or a target device.

[0071] The multiple network devices 120-1 to 120-N (N is a positive integer, e.g. N>3) may be separately or collectively be referred to as a network device 120, which may be a gNB or a TRP. For example, N may equal to 18 or another integer.

[0072] In some examples, one of the network devices 120-1 to 120-N may be a serving gNB of the terminal device 110, which can control and manage other network devices 120 (e.g. TRP) . In some other examples, there may be an independent serving gNB which is different from any of the multiple TRPs.

[0073] In the communication network 100, the network device 120 can communicate / transmit data and control information to the terminal device 110, and the terminal device 110 can also communicate / transmit data and control information to the network device 120. A link from the network device 120 to the terminal device 110 is referred to as a DL, while a link from the terminal device 110 to the network device 120 is referred to as a UL. DL may comprise one or more logical channels, including but not limited to a Physical Downlink Control Channel (PDCCH) and a Physical Downlink Shared Channel (PDSCH) . UL may comprise one or more logical channels, including but not limited to a Physical Uplink Control Channel (PUCCH) and a Physical Uplink Shared Channel (PUSCH) . As used herein, the term “channel” may refer to a carrier or a part of a carrier consisting of a contiguous set of resource blocks (RBs) on which a channel access procedure is performed in shared spectrum.

[0074] In the communication network 100, the terminal device 110 can communicate with the LMF 130 according to any proper communication protocol, such as an LTE positioning protocol (LPP) . In the communication network 100, the network device 120 can communicate with the LMF 130 according to any proper communication protocol, such as an NR positioning protocol A (NRPPa) . It is to be understood that other protocol may also be applied and will not be listed herein.

[0075] In the communication network 100, the PRU 140 at a known location can perform positioning measurements (e.g., RSTD, RSRP, UE Rx-Tx Time Difference measurements, DL-RSCPD, DL-RSCP, etc. ) and report these measurements to a location server such as the LMF 130. In addition, the PRU 140 can transmit SRS to enable TRPs (such as part or all of the network devices 120 or some different nodes) to measure and report UL positioning measurements (e.g., RTOA, UL-AoA, gNB Rx-Tx Time Difference, UL-RSCP, etc. ) from PRU 140 at a known location. The PRU measurements can be compared by a location server with the measurements expected at the known PRU location to determine correction terms for other nearby target devices. The DL-and / or UL location measurements for other target devices can then be corrected based on the previously determined correction terms. In some examples, the PRU measurements may also be provided to the target device in the assistance data. In some examples, from a location server perspective, the PRU 140 functionality is realized by a UE with known location.

[0076] Embodiments of the present disclosure can be applied to any suitable scenarios. For example, embodiments of the present disclosure can be implemented at reduced capability NR devices. Alternatively, embodiments of the present disclosure can be implemented in one of the followings: NR multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) , NR sidelink enhancements, NR systems with frequency above 52.6GHz, an extending NR operation up to 71GHz, narrow band-Internet of Thing (NB-IOT)  / enhanced Machine Type Communication (eMTC) over non-terrestrial networks (NTN) , NTN, UE power saving enhancements, NR coverage enhancement, NB-IoT and LTE-MTC, Integrated Access and Backhaul (IAB) , NR Multicast and Broadcast Services, or enhancements on Multi-Radio Dual-Connectivity.

[0077] It is to be understood that the numbers of devices (i.e., the terminal devices 110, the network device 120, and the PRU 140) and their connection relationships and types shown in FIG. 1A are only for the purpose of illustration without suggesting any limitation. The communication network 100 may include any suitable numbers of devices adapted for  implementing embodiments of the present disclosure. The communication network 100 may include one or more entities which are not shown in FIG. 1A. Although the network device 150 is illustrated as a separate node, in actual scenario, the network device 150 may be one of the network device 120, and the present disclosure does not limit for this aspect.

[0078] It is to be understood that although the terminal device 110 and the PRU 140 are illustrated as a mobile phone in FIG. 1A, the type of the terminal device 110 or the PRU 140 can be another type and the present disclosure does not limit for this aspect.

[0079] For AI / ML-assisted positioning, a “single-TRP construction” and a “multi-TRP construction” are being discussed. Single-TRP construction: the input of the ML model is the channel measurement between the target UE and a single TRP, and the output of the ML model is for the same pair of UE and TRP. Multi-TRP construction: the input of the ML model contains N sets of channel measurements between the target UE and N (N>1) TRPs, and the output of the ML model contains N sets of values, one for each of the N TRPs.

[0080] In some cases, three constructions may be evaluated for the AI / ML assisted positioning: Single-TRP, same model for N TRPs; Single-TRP, N models for N TRPs; and Multi-TRP (i.e., one model for N TRPs) .

[0081] In some cases, there may be N TRPs (TRP 0, TRP 1, …, TRP (N-1) ) used for AI / ML based positioning, and direct AI / ML positioning (FIG. 1B) and AI / ML assisted positioning (FIGS. 1C-1E) may be evaluated. FIG. 1B illustrates an example schematic of direct AI / ML positioning with an output is the UE location. FIG. 1C illustrates an example schematic of AI / ML assisted positioning with multi-TRP construction for model input, FIG. 1D illustrates an example schematic of AI / ML assisted positioning with single-TRP construction for model input and one same model for N TRPs, and FIG. 1E illustrates an example schematic of AI / ML assisted positioning with single-TRP construction and N different models for N TRPs.

[0082] As shown in FIGS. 1C-1E, the AI / ML assisted positioning can be applied using input data (such as CIR, PDP, or DP) associated with one single TRP or multiple TPRs. For the former scenario, N models with different parameters or a single model may be deployed to estimate time information (e.g., time of arrival (TOA) ) for N TRPs, which may be regarded as a distributed model on each TRP. In the latter scenario, a single comprehensive model (i.e. a centralized model) utilizes the data from multiple TRPs as the input and produces the multiple TOAs corresponding to the multiple TRPs.

[0083] An information element (IE) “NR-DL-TDOA-SignalMeasurementInformation” is  used by the target device to provide NR DL-TDOA measurements to the location server. The dl-PRS-ReferenceInfo defines the "RSTD reference" TRP. The nr-RSTD's and nr-RSTD-ResultDiff's in nr-DL-TDOA-MeasList are provided relative to the "RSTD reference" TRP. The "RSTD reference" TRP may or may not be the same as the "assistance data reference" TRP provided by nr-DL-PRS-ReferenceInfo in IE NR-DL-PRS-AssistanceData. The target device includes a value of zero for the nr-RSTD and nr-RSTD-ResultDiff of the "RSTD reference" TRP in nr-DL-TDOA-MeasList.

[0084] The IE NR-AdditionalPathList is used by the target device to provide information about additional paths in association to the TOA measurements associated to NR positioning in the form of a relative time difference and a quality value. The additional path nr-RelativeTimeDifference is the detected path timing relative to the detected path timing used for the TOA value, and each additional path can be associated with a quality value nr-PathQuality.

[0085] The IE NR-PRU-DL-Info is used by the location server to provide the carrier phase measurements with associated measurements and additional information reported by a PRU for UE-based DL-TDOA to a target UE.

[0086] The IE NR-PositionCalculationAssistance is used by the location server to provide assistance data including integrity information to enable UE-based downlink positioning.

[0087] It is agreed that for model performance monitoring of AI / ML positioning Case 1, for model performance monitoring metric calculation in label-based model performance monitoring, with regard to how to generate information on ground truth label, assistance data transfer framework from LMF to the target UE may be reused, where the PRU measurement (e.g., legacy measurement) and the corresponding PRU location are sent via LMF to the target UE. In some cases, the LMF performs monitoring metric calculation. For example, at least inference result (i.e., the model output corresponding to target UE’s channel measurement) of the target UE is sent by the target UE to LMF. For example, PRU’s channel measurement is sent via LMF to the target UE, and the inference result (i.e., the model output corresponding to PRU’s channel measurement) is sent by the target UE to LMF.

[0088] However, the measurement provided by the PRU may be in a different format with that used by the UE, in this event, how to obtain available measurement for the model performance monitoring at UE side should be addressed.

[0089] In the present disclosure, “AI / ML model” is a data driven algorithm that applies  AI / ML techniques to generate a set of outputs based on a set of inputs; “data collection” is a process of collecting data by the network nodes, management entity, or UE for the purpose of AI / ML model training, data analytics and inference; “model training” is a process to train an AI / ML Model by learning the input / output relationship in a data driven manner and obtain the trained AI / ML Model for inference; “model inference” is a process of using a trained AI / ML model to produce a set of outputs based on a set of inputs; “UE side model” means an AI / ML model whose inference is performed entirely at the UE; and “model performance monitoring” is a procedure that monitors the inference performance of the AI / ML model.

[0090] In the present disclosure, an entity for transmitting a PRS may be interchangeably used with one of: a TRP, a PRS, a reference TRP, a reference PRS, a reference entity, etc., and the present disclosure does not limit for this aspect.

[0091] In the present disclosure, a term “sample-based measurement” is used and may be defined as:

[0092] - The measurement is composed of Nt's amples of the estimated channel response in time domain. The timing information for the Nt's amples are reported with a timing granularity T, where T=2k×Tc. k represents the timing reporting granularity factor. Tc is the basic time unit for NR. The corresponding measurement (e.g., power if reported) corresponds to the measurement for the reported Nt's amples. Nt'a nd k can be signaled. The timing information is defined relative to a reference time.

[0093] In the present disclosure, a term “path-based measurement” is used and may refer to the measurement in the existing specifications (up to Rel-18) including measurement reporting, with potential enhancements on the number of reported paths (if needed) .

[0094] Reference is further made to FIG. 2, which illustrates a signalling chart illustrating communication process 200 in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. The process 200 may involve a terminal device 110, an LMF 130, and a PRU 140, with reference to FIG. 1A. It would be appreciated that the process 200 may be applied to other communication scenarios, which will not be described in detail.

[0095] There is a positioning model deployed at the terminal device 110, for example, the positioning model has been trained using training data. In some examples, the positioning model is a UE side model, which may be applied for above-mentioned Case 1: UE-based positioning with UE-side model, direct AI / ML positioning.

[0096] In some implementations, it is up to UE implementation to generate model input for  the positioning model, that is, the LMF 130 may not know how to generate the measurement in UE side.

[0097] In the process 200, the terminal device 110 may transmit at least one parameter to the LMF 130 at 204. In some example embodiments, if the positioning model is triggered or activated, the terminal device 110 may transmit the at least one parameter of model input in training data of the positioning model. In some example embodiments, the at least one parameter may be at least one sampling parameter of model input in training data or be at least one path parameter of model input in training data.

[0098] In some example embodiments, the at least one sampling parameter may include part or all of the following: an identifier of an entity for transmitting a PRS at least for positioning the terminal device, an identifier of a PRS, a timing granularity for generating samples, a reference time for determining timing information, a number of samples, a rule for determining the number of samples, or a sampling window. In some examples, the entity may be a TRP, for example, one or more TRP identifiers may be included, while the one or more TRPs are involved in the model input, and the TRP identifiers can be represented by the IE dl-PRS-ID in current 37.355. In some examples, the timing granularity T may be explicitly included, or a timing reporting granularity factor k may be included for representing T. In some examples, the number of samples may be a value of Nt’ , which is the number of samples corresponds to the measurement. In some examples, the rule for determining the number of samples may be a rule for selecting Nt’ samples, for example, the rule may be strongest power or be uniform spacing. For example, if multiple rules can be used by the terminal device 110, then a bitstring can be used for indicating the rule. For instance, a bitstring “0” or “00” may represent a rule of strongest power. For instance, a bitstring “1” or “01” may represent a rule of uniform spacing.

[0099] In some example embodiments, the at least one path parameters may include part or all of the following: an identifier of an entity for transmitting a PRS at least for positioning the terminal device, an identifier of a PRS, a required number of paths, a rule for determining paths, or a window for detecting a path. In some examples, the entity may be a TRP, for example, one or more TRP identifiers may be included, while the one or more TRPs are involved in the model input, and the TRP identifiers can be represented by the IE dl-PRS-ID in current TS37.355. In some examples, the paths may include a reference path and one or more additional paths. In some examples, the rule for determining paths may be a rule for selecting additional paths, e.g., strongest power or closest to the reference path in time  domain. For example, if multiple rules can be used by the terminal device 110, then a bitstring can be used for indicating the rule. For instance, a bitstring “0” or “00” may represent a rule of strongest power. For instance, a bitstring “1” or “01” may represent a rule of closest to the reference path.

[0100] In some other implementations, the terminal device 110 may generate the model input for the positioning model based on an instruction from the LMF 130, that is, the LMF 130 knows how to generate the measurement in UE side. In this case, the LMF 130 may be aware of the at least one parameter itself, for example, the operation 204 may be omitted.

[0101] In the process 200, the LMF 130 may transmit the at least one parameter to the PRU 140 at 206. In some example embodiments, configuration information of at least one entity (e.g., at least one TRP) that are used for generating measurement of model input for positioning the terminal device 110 but not involved in a measurement collection process of the PRU 140 may also be provided from the LMF 130 to the PRU 140.

[0102] In the process 200, the PRU 140 may transmit a first measurement to the LMF at 208. In some example embodiments, the PRU 140 may generate the first measurement which may be a sample-based measurement or a path-based measurement based on the at least one parameter.

[0103] In addition or alternatively, at least one path parameter may be provided to the PRU 140 at 206, in some examples, if the PRU 140 is incapable to generate the first measurement for paths that indicted in the at least one path parameter, the PRU 140 may transmit a response to the LMF 130, and the response may indicate that the PRU 140 is incapable of generating the first measurement based on the at least one path parameter. For example, the response may include a cause value which indicate that the first measurement with a required number of path is not provided.

[0104] In the process 200, the LMF 130 transmits the first measurement to the terminal device 110 at 212, where the first measurement may be the sample-based measurement or the path-based measurement. Alternatively, a known location of the PRU 140 may also be provided to the terminal device 110 by the LMF 130, e.g., at the operation 212. For example, the known location may be regarded as a ground truth of PRU location.

[0105] In some example embodiments, the first measurement may be determined (or generated) by the PRU 140. In some examples, the operation 206 is performed and the first measurement is transmitted at 208.

[0106] In some other example embodiments, the first measurement may be determined (or generated) by the LMF 130, e.g., at 210. In some examples, the operation 206 may not be performed and a second measurement is transmitted at 208. In some examples, the LMF 130 may determine or generate the first measurement at 210 based on the second measurement from the PRU 140 and the at least one parameter.

[0107] In some examples, the LMF 130 may further transmit a request to a network device 150 which serves the PRU 140, where the request may be used for requesting a channel estimation result of the PRU 140. In addition, the LMF 130 may receive the channel estimation result from the network device 150. In some examples, the first measurement may be determined at 210 based on the second measurement from the PRU 140, the channel estimation result from the network device 150, and the at least one parameter.

[0108] In the process 200, the terminal device 110 determines an inferred location of the PRU 140 based on the first measurement at 214. In some example embodiments, the first measurement, i.e., the sample-based measurement or the path-based measurement, may be used for determining a model input of the positioning model, and accordingly the model output may be obtained. For example, the model output represents the inferred location of the PRU 140.

[0109] In the process 200, the terminal device 110 determines a monitoring metric at 216, e.g., based on the inferred location and the known location of the PRU 140. In some examples, the inferred location may be compared with the known location provided by the LMF 130, to obtain a model monitoring metric. For example, the monitoring metric may be a drift of the inferred location from positioning model comparing with known location of the PRU 140. For example, the monitoring metric may be represented in a form of percentage.

[0110] In the process 200, the terminal device 110 transmits the monitoring metric to the LMF 130 at 218. In addition, the LMF 130 may make a monitoring decision based on the monitoring metric.

[0111] In the process 200, the LMF 130 transmits a monitoring decision to the terminal device 110 at 220. In some example embodiments, the monitoring decision may indicate a model performance of the positioning model. For example, the monitoring decision may also be referred to as a model performance monitoring decision, information about the model performance, or the like, and the present disclosure does not limit for this aspect.

[0112] According to embodiments with reference to FIG. 2, a first measurement associated with the PRU which is consistent with the model input of a positioning model deployed at the terminal device can be provided to the terminal device by the LMF, as such, a model performance monitoring is enabled and the model performance can be determined. Some detailed embodiments will be provided below with reference to FIGS. 3A-4D.

[0113] FIG. 3A illustrates an example schematic of model inference 310 at the terminal device in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. The terminal device 110 may receive a PRS 301 from a network device 120, and further determine model input up to UE implementation 304, the model input may be input into the positioning model 302, and the model output is the location 303. Up to UE implementation 304, the terminal device 110 may measure received PRS 301 to generate a measurement, e.g., a sample-based measurement or a path-based measurement, and the model input may be extracted from the measurement. In this case, the LMF 130 and the PRU 140 may not know how to generate the measurement (and corresponding model input) by the terminal device 110.

[0114] In some example embodiments, the terminal device 110 may determine a sample-based measurement, however, details of which may not be known by the LMF 130 or the PRU 140. In this case, although the PRU 140 provide its measurement to the terminal device 110 via the LMF 130, the sample-based measurement generated by the terminal device 110 may not show the accurate first path of the measurement from the PRU 140. FIG. 3B illustrates an example schematic of measurements 320 at the PRU and at the terminal device. For example, there may be a timing error between the measurement 308 at UE side and the measurement 307 at PRU side. For example, a sampling period or a sample rate of sample-based measurement at the UE side may depend on the training data set. For example, due to the timing error, the model input cannot accurately represent a channel measurement of the PRU, resulting in an inaccurate location of the model output.

[0115] FIG. 3C illustrates an example process 330 in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. The process 330 involves the terminal device 110, the LMF 130, and the PRU 140.

[0116] In the process 330, as a positioning model is triggered or activated to infer UE position, the terminal device 110 transmits sampling parameters to the LMF 130 at 331. In some examples, the sampling parameters may be provided via an LPP message, such as a  dedicated LPP message. In some examples, the sampling parameters can be used to generate a first measurement (asample-based measurement) for model input at the terminal device 110.

[0117] The sampling parameters may include TRP identifiers involved in model input, e.g., dl-PRS-ID defined in current TS 37.355. The sampling parameters may include a timing granularity T for generating samples, or timing reporting granularity factor k for representing T. The sampling parameters may include a reference time for defining timing information. The sampling parameters may include a value of Nt’ , which is the number of samples corresponds to the measurement. The sampling parameters may include a rule for selecting Nt’ samples, e.g., strongest power or uniform spacing. For example, if multiple rules can be selected by the terminal device 110 or multiple rules are provided to the terminal device 110 UE, a bitstring can be used for differentiating rules. For example, ‘0’ or ‘00’ represents selecting Nt’ samples by strongest power, and ‘1’ or ‘01’ represents selecting Nt’ samples by uniform spacing. The sampling parameters may include a sampling window, if exists.

[0118] In the process 330, the LMF 130 transmits the sampling parameters to the PRU 140 at 332. In some examples, the sampling parameters may be transferred by the LMF 130 via an LPP message, e.g., by an IE NR-DL-TDOA-ProvideAssistanceData or NR-DL-AoD-ProvideAssistanceData. In some other examples, the sampling parameters may be transferred by the LMF 130 via a new LPP message associated with or without an AI / ML feature. Optionally, as mentioned above, the sampling parameters may include TRP identifiers involved in model input, if at least one of TRPs indicated by the sampling parameters (e.g., by TRP identifiers) is not involved in a measurement collection process of the PRU 140, the LMF 130 also provides the PRS configuration of the at least one TRP to the PRU 140.

[0119] As such, the terminal device 110 provides sampling parameters (or called as sample related parameters) of training data to the LMF 130, and the LMF 130 forwards the parameters to the PRU 140 for measurement generation.

[0120] In the process 330, the PRU 140 measures at least one positioning reference signal to generate a sample-based measurement at 333. In some examples, the PRU 140 generates the sample-based measurement according to the sampling parameters after they are received, or after receiving an indicator to generate the measurement for model performance monitoring.

[0121] The PRU 140 transmits the sample-based measurement to the LMF 130 at 334. In some examples, the sample-based measurement may be sent via an LPP message, e.g. an updated LPP message NR-DL-TDOA-SignalMeasurementInformation. In some examples, the sample-based measurement may be sent via a newly-defined LPP message for model related measurement or data transfer. In some examples, the transmission of the sample-based measurement at 334 may be the same or similar with a transmission of sample-based measurement from terminal device to network device.

[0122] The LMF 130 transmits the sample-based measurement to the terminal device 110 at 335. In some examples, the LMF 130 transmits the sample-based measurement and corresponding PRU location (if it is not known by the terminal device 110) . In some examples, the sample-based measurement (optionally, and the PRU location) may be transmitted via an LPP message NR-PRU-DL-Info, or via a new LPP message associated with or without an AI / ML feature.

[0123] In the process 330, the terminal device 110 determines a model output using the positioning model at 336. In some examples, the terminal device 110 may determine a model input based on the sample-based measurement, for example, the model input may be extracted from the sample-based measurement, for example, the model input may be a duplet {timing information, power information} or a triplet {timing information, power information, phase information} . In some example, a model inference may be performed by inputting the model input, and the model output is an inferred PRU location.

[0124] The terminal device 110 determines a monitoring metric at 337. In some examples, a calculator may be used by the terminal device 110. For example, an input of the calculator may include a model output at 336 (i.e., an inferred location from the AI / ML model) and a PRU location (e.g., that provided by the LMF 130 at 335) . For example, an output of the calculator may be a monitoring metric, which is also called as a label-based model performance metric. In some examples, the terminal device 110 may perform a model performance monitoring by comparing the model output (i.e. an inferred location) and the PRU location.

[0125] The terminal device 110 transmits the monitoring metric to the LMF 130 at 338. In some examples, the monitoring metric is reported to the LMF 130 for making a monitoring decision.

[0126] The LMF 130 makes a monitoring decision based on the monitoring metric. The  LMF 130 transmits the decision to the terminal device 110 at 339. In some examples, the LMF 130 informs the terminal device 110 of the model perform monitoring decision.

[0127] According to embodiments with reference to FIG. 3C, the sample-based measurement can be generated and provided by the PRU 140, e.g., based on the sampling parameters from terminal device 110 via the LMF 130. The operations at the LMF 130 and the terminal device 110 can be simplified.

[0128] FIG. 3D illustrates an example process 340 in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. The process 340 involves the terminal device 110, the LMF 130, and the PRU 140. The process 340 may include operations 341, 331, 342-345, and 335-339, where the operations 331 and 335-339 shown in FIG. 3D may refer to those discussed in FIG. 3C, detailed of which will not be repeated herein.

[0129] In the process 340, the LMF 130 may transmit a request for the sampling parameters to the terminal device 110 at 341. In some examples, the request may be included in an LPP message. For example, the LMF 130 may transmit the LPP message that requires the terminal device 110 to provide sampling parameters.

[0130] The LMF 130 may transmit an LPP message ProvideAssistanceData to the PRU 140 at 342 if necessary. In some examples, the LMF 130 may provide PRS configuration of at least one TRP to the PRU 140 for generating a second measurement, where the at least one TRP is used for generating measurement for model input for positioning the terminal device 110 but is not involved in a measurement collection process of the PRU 140.

[0131] The PRU 140 may measure received at least one PRS at 343 to obtain a second measurement at 343. In addition, the PRU 140 transmits the second measurement to the LMF 130 at 344, e.g., via an LPP message ProvideLocationInformation. For example, the PRU 140 may generate the second measurement and report it to the LMF 130 in a legacy way.

[0132] Alternatively, the LMF 130 may request the network device 150 (e.g., a gNB which serves the PRU 140) to provide a channel estimation result of the PRU 140. For example, the request to the network device 150 may be included in an NRPPa message. For example, the channel estimation result of the PRU 140 may include a CSI report.

[0133] The LMF 130 may generate the sample-based measurement at 345. In some examples, the LMF 130 may transform the second measurement to the sample-based measurement based on the sampling parameters from the terminal device 110 and optional  the channel estimation result.

[0134] According to embodiments with reference to FIG. 3D, the sample-based measurement can be generated (e.g., transformed) by the LMF 130, e.g., based on the second measurement from the PRU 140 and the sampling parameters from terminal device 110. The sample-based measurement transformed from the original measurement can be used by the terminal device 110 for model performance monitoring. As such, there is no need to introduce additional signaling for the PRU 140, and the specification effect on PRU can be avoided.

[0135] In some other example embodiments, referring back to FIG. 3A, the terminal device 110 may determine a path-based measurement, however, details of which may not be known by the LMF 130 or the PRU 140. In this case, the terminal device 110 and the PRU 140 may select different paths.

[0136] FIG. 3E illustrates an example schematic of measurements 350 associated with paths at the PRU and at the terminal device. As illustrated, the paths selected by the PRU 140 are different from that selected by the terminal device 110.

[0137] Path-based measurement may consist of timing and power information of detected paths. For the path-based measurement, the method to determine the detected paths is up to implementation. Besides, even if the terminal device 110 and PRU 140 use the same method to identify the paths, the terminal device 110 may select different paths when generate the path-based measurement. For example, as shown in FIG. 3E, it is assumed that the terminal device 110 and PRU 140 are deployed at a same physical environment and use the same method to identify the paths, and at most 2 paths (e.g., the LMF 130 configures the terminal device 110 and PRU 140 with NR-AdditionalPathList rather than NR-AdditionalPathListExt) are required for reporting. In some examples, different algorithm may be used to identify the paths. For instance, the PRU 140 may choose the two paths which are closest to the reference path in time domain, while the terminal device 110 may choose the two paths with strongest power after the reference path in time domain, resulting different paths are selected by the PRU 140 and the terminal device 110 when generate the path-based measurement if any alignment is not provided between the terminal device 110 and PRU 140.

[0138] Moreover, the terminal device 110 deployed with an AI / ML model may face an enhancement with more than 8 paths to be measured, while the PRU 140 may not face this  situation, this may result the path-based measurement provides from PRU 140 cannot be applied to the terminal device 110 for model performance monitoring directly, if positioning accuracy degradation is not expected when using the AI / ML model for positioning.

[0139] FIG. 3F illustrates an example process 360 in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. The process 360 involves the terminal device 110, the LMF 130, and the PRU 140.

[0140] In the process 360, as a positioning model is triggered or activated to infer UE position, the terminal device 110 transmits path parameters to the LMF 130 at 361. In some examples, the path parameters may be provided via an LPP message, such as a dedicated LPP message. In some examples, the path parameters can be used to generate a first measurement (a path-based measurement) for model input at the terminal device 110.

[0141] The path parameters may include TRP identifiers involved in model input, e.g., dl-PRS-ID defined in current TS 37.355. The path parameters may include a required path number for generating model input. The path parameters may include a rule for selecting paths, e.g., strongest power or closest to the reference path in time domain. For example, if multiple rules can be selected by the terminal device 110 or multiple rules are provided to the terminal device 110, a bitstring can be used for differentiating rules. For example, ‘0’ or ‘00’ represents selecting Nt strongest power paths among all detected paths, and ‘1’ or ‘01’ represents selecting Nt closest paths relative to the reference path among all detected paths. The path parameters may include a window for detecting the paths, if exists.

[0142] In the process 360, the LMF 130 transmits the path parameters to the PRU 140 at 362. In some examples, the path parameters may be transferred by the LMF 130 via an LPP message, e.g., by an IE NR-DL-TDOA-ProvideAssistanceData or NR-DL-AoD-ProvideAssistanceData. In some other examples, the path parameters may be transferred by the LMF 130 via a new LPP message associated with or without an AI / ML feature. Optionally, as mentioned above, the path parameters may include TRP identifiers involved in model input, if at least one of TRPs indicated by the path parameters (e.g., by TRP identifiers) is not involved in a measurement collection process of the PRU 140, the LMF 130 also provides the PRS configuration of the at least one TRP to the PRU 140.

[0143] As such, the terminal device 110 provides path parameters (or called as path related parameters) of training data to the LMF 130, and the LMF 130 forwards the parameters to the PRU 140 for measurement collection.

[0144] In the process 360, the PRU 140 measures at least one positioning reference signal to generate a path-based measurement at 363. In some examples, the PRU 140 generates the path-based measurement according to the path parameters after they are received, or after receiving an indicator to generate the measurement for model performance monitoring.

[0145] Alternatively, if the PRU 140 is incapable of generating the path-based measurement for more paths as indicated by the path parameters, the PRU 140 may transmit (or returns) failure information. For example, the failure information may be provided in an LPP message of type ProvideLocationInformation which includes a cause indication indicating that a measurement with more than required path number is not (cannot be) provided.

[0146] The PRU 140 transmits the path-based measurement to the LMF 130 at 364. In some examples, the path-based measurement may be sent via an LPP message, e.g. an updated LPP message NR-DL-TDOA-SignalMeasurementInformation. In some examples, the path-based measurement may be sent via a newly-defined LPP message for model related measurement or data transfer. In some examples, the transmission of the path-based measurement at 364 may be the same or similar with a transmission of path-based measurement from terminal device to network device.

[0147] The LMF 130 transmits the path-based measurement to the terminal device 110 at 365. In some examples, the LMF 130 transmits the path-based measurement and corresponding PRU location (if it is not known by the terminal device 110) . In some examples, the path-based measurement (optionally, and the PRU location) may be transmitted via an LPP message NR-PRU-DL-Info, or via a new LPP message associated with or without an AI / ML feature.

[0148] In the process 360, the terminal device 110 determines a model output using the positioning model at 366. In some examples, the terminal device 110 may determine a model input based on the path-based measurement, for example, the model input may be extracted from the path-based measurement, for example, the model input may be a duplet {timing information, power information} or a triplet {timing information, power information, phase information} . In some example, a model inference may be performed by inputting the model input, and the model output is an inferred PRU location.

[0149] The terminal device 110 determines a monitoring metric at 367. In some examples, a calculator may be used by the terminal device 110. For example, an input of the calculator may include a model output at 366 (i.e., an inferred location from the AI / ML model) and a  PRU location (e.g., that provided by the LMF 130 at 365) . For example, an output of the calculator may be a monitoring metric, which is also called as a label-based model performance metric. In some examples, the terminal device 110 may perform a model performance monitoring by comparing the model output (i.e. an inferred location) and the PRU location.

[0150] The terminal device 110 transmits the monitoring metric to the LMF 130 at 368. In some examples, the monitoring metric is reported to the LMF 130 for making a monitoring decision.

[0151] The LMF 130 makes a monitoring decision based on the monitoring metric. The LMF 130 transmits the decision to the terminal device 110 at 369. In some examples, the LMF 130 informs the terminal device 110 of the model perform monitoring decision.

[0152] According to embodiments with reference to FIG. 3F, the path-based measurement can be generated and provided by the PRU 140, e.g., based on the path parameters from terminal device 110 via the LMF 130. The operations at the LMF 130 and the terminal device 110 can be simplified.

[0153] FIG. 3G illustrates an example process 370 in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. The process 370 involves the terminal device 110, the LMF 130, and the PRU 140. The process 370 may include operations 371, 361, 372-375, and 365-369, where the operations 361 and 365-369 shown in FIG. 3G may refer to those discussed in FIG. 3F, detailed of which will not be repeated herein.

[0154] In the process 370, the LMF 130 may transmit a request for the path parameters to the terminal device 110 at 371. In some examples, the request may be included in an LPP message. For example, the LMF 130 may transmit the LPP message that requires the terminal device 110 to provide path parameters.

[0155] The LMF 130 may transmit an LPP message ProvideAssistanceData to the PRU 140 at 372 if necessary. In some examples, the LMF 130 may provide PRS configuration of at least one TRP to the PRU 140 for generating a second measurement, where the at least one TRP is used for generating the measurement for model input for positioning the terminal device 110 but is not involved in a measurement collection process of the PRU 140.

[0156] The PRU 140 may measure received at least one PRS at 373 to obtain a second measurement at 373. In addition, the PRU 140 transmits the second measurement to the LMF 130 at 374, e.g., via an LPP message ProvideLocationInformation. For example, the  PRU 140 may generate the second measurement and report it to the LMF 130 in a legacy way.

[0157] Alternatively, the LMF 130 may request the network device 150 (e.g., a gNB which serves the PRU 140) to provide a channel estimation result of the PRU 140. For example, the request to the network device 150 may be included in an NRPPa message. For example, the channel estimation result of the PRU 140 may include a CSI report.

[0158] The LMF 130 may generate the path-based measurement at 375. In some examples, the LMF 130 may transform the second measurement to the path-based measurement based on the path parameters from the terminal device 110 and optional the channel estimation result.

[0159] According to embodiments with reference to FIG. 3G, the path-based measurement can be generated (e.g., transformed) by the LMF 130, e.g., based on the second measurement from the PRU 140 and the path parameters from terminal device 110. The path-based measurement transformed from the original measurement can be used by the terminal device 110 for model performance monitoring. As such, there is no need to introduce additional signaling for the PRU 140, and the specification effect on PRU can be avoided.

[0160] According to embodiments with reference to FIGS. 3A-3G, in case the measurement is generated by the terminal device 110 upon UE implementations, the sampling parameters or the path parameters can be provided to the LMF 130 by the terminal device 110. As such, a corresponding sample-based measurement or path-based measurement can be provided to the terminal device 110 for model performance monitoring.

[0161] FIG. 4A illustrates an example schematic of model inference 410 at the terminal device in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. The terminal device 110 may receive a PRS 401 from a network device 120, and further determine model input as that instructed by LMF 404, the model input may be input into the positioning model 402, and the model output is the location 403. In this case, the model input may be extracted from the sample-based or path-based measurement, and the parameters used to generate the sample-based or path-based measurement are provided by the LMF 130. That is to say, the LMF 130 know how to generate the measurement (the sample-based or path-based measurement) at the terminal device 110.

[0162] In some example embodiments, although the parameters used by the terminal device 110 may be provided by the LMF 130, the PRU 140 may not know this. In this case,  although the PRU 140 provide its measurement to the terminal device 110 via the LMF 130, the sample-based measurement generated by the terminal device 110 may not show the accurate paths of the measurement from the PRU 140. For example, there may be a timing error between a measurement at UE side and a measurement at PRU side. For example, a sampling period or a sample rate of sample-based measurement at the UE side may depend on the training data set. For example, due to the timing error, the model input cannot accurately represent a channel measurement of the PRU, resulting in an inaccurate location of the model output.

[0163] FIG. 4B illustrates an example process 420 in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. The process 420 involves the terminal device 110, the LMF 130, and the PRU 140. The process 420 may include operations 421 and 333-339, where the operations 333-339 shown in FIG. 4B may refer to those discussed in FIG. 3C, detailed of which will not be repeated herein.

[0164] In the process 420, as a positioning model is triggered or activated to infer UE position at the terminal device 110, the LMF 130 transmits sampling parameters to the PRU 140 at 421. In some examples, the sampling parameters may be transferred by the LMF 130 via an LPP message which may be an existing LPP message or a new LPP message associated with or without an AI / ML feature.

[0165] In some examples, the LPP message may include sampling parameters that are discussed with reference to FIG. 3C, and may further include configuration information of at least one TRP. For example, the LPP message may include a PRS configuration of the at least one TRP, where the at least one TRP is involved in a positioning process of the terminal device 110 but is not involved in the measurement collection process of the PRU 140.

[0166] It is understood that the details of operations 333-339 may refer to those provided with reference to FIG. 3C, and thus will not be repeated herein.

[0167] According to embodiments with reference to FIG. 4B, the sample-based measurement can be generated and provided by the PRU 140, e.g., based on the sampling parameters from the LMF 130. The operations at the LMF 130 and the terminal device 110 can be simplified.

[0168] FIG. 4C illustrates an example process 430 in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. The process 430 involves the terminal device 110, the LMF 130, and the PRU 140. The process 430 may include operations 342-345, and  335-339, where the operations 342-345 shown in FIG. 4C may refer to those discussed in FIG. 3D and the operations 335-339 shown in FIG. 4C may refer to those discussed in FIG. 3C, detailed of which will not be repeated herein.

[0169] According to embodiments with reference to FIG. 4C, the sample-based measurement can be generated (e.g., transformed) by the LMF 130, e.g., based on the second measurement from the PRU 140 and the sampling parameters which are known by the LMF 130. The sample-based measurement transformed from the original measurement can be used by the terminal device 110 for model performance monitoring. As such, there is no need to introduce additional signaling for the PRU 140, and the specification effect on PRU can be avoided.

[0170] FIG. 4D illustrates an example process 440 in accordance with some example embodiments of the present disclosure. The process 440 involves the terminal device 110, the LMF 130, and the PRU 140. The process 440 may include operations 441 and 363-369, where the operations 363-369 shown in FIG. 4D may refer to those discussed in FIG. 3F, detailed of which will not be repeated herein.

[0171] In the process 440, as a positioning model is triggered or activated to infer UE position at the terminal device 110, the LMF 130 transmits path parameters to the PRU 140 at 441. In some examples, the path parameters may be transferred by the LMF 130 via an LPP message which may be an existing LPP message or a new LPP message associated with or without an AI / ML feature.

[0172] In some examples, the LPP message may include path parameters that are discussed with reference to FIG. 3F, and may further include configuration information of at least one TRP. For example, the LPP message may include a PRS configuration of the at least one TRP, where the at least one TRP is involved in a positioning process of the terminal device 110 but is not involved in the measurement collection process of the PRU 140.

[0173] According to embodiments with reference to FIG. 4D, the path-based measurement can be generated and provided by the PRU 140, e.g., based on the path parameters from the LMF 130. The operations at the LMF 130 and the terminal device 110 can be simplified.

[0174] For label-based model preference monitoring of AI / ML positioning case 1, it has agreed that either a target UE (e.g., the terminal device 110) or LMF (e.g., the LMF 130) can performs monitoring metric calculation. Besides, as the ground truth label is difficult to be generated at target UE side, PRU 140 can be regarded as a valid entity to assist monitoring  data collection.

[0175] If model performance monitoring metric calculation is performed at UE side, and the PRU is designated to provide monitoring data to assist the model performance monitoring, the generic process is that: a PRU measurement is transferred to the LMF, and the LMF forwards the measurement and the corresponding PRU location to the target UE. As long as the UE receives the PRU measurement, the UE runs the model and preforms metric calculation by comparing the difference between the model output (by inputting the related measurement provided from the PRU) and the PRU location, and reports the monitoring metric to LMF. In addition, the LMF makes the monitoring decision and informs it to the UE. The generic process can be shown below.

[0176] In some cases, for timing information, the measurement forwarded from LMF to UE may contain TDOA measurement, i.e., RSTD value. However, the model input may be the duplet {timing information, power information} or triplet {timing information, power information, phase information} based on the path-based measurement or sample-based measurement.

[0177] In the present disclosure, if the model input is determined based on the sample-based measurement, the sample-based measurement may be generated by the PRU or may be transformed by the LMF from the PRU measurement. That is, a mechanism is provided to transform the PRU measurement to the sample-based measurement that the terminal device needs for extracting model input. For example, the PRU measurement may be timing difference between two TRPs, while the sample-based measurement is a sampled timing of channel state.

[0178] In the present disclosure, if the model input is determined based on the path-based measurement, the path-based measurement may be generated by the PRU or may be transformed by the LMF from the PRU measurement. That is, a mechanism is provided to align the paths between PRU and the terminal device.

[0179] FIG. 5 illustrates a flowchart of an example method 500 implemented at a terminal device in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For example, the terminal device may be the terminal device 110 with reference to FIG. 1A which has a deployed AI / ML positioning model.
