[0002] Technical field of the invention
[0003] This present invention relates to the use of micro-RNAs in processed milk products derived from a dairy cattle as indicators of animal welfare, such as indicators of stress such as heat stress.
[0004] Background of the invention
[0005] International regulatory framework proposes observations of changes in animal health status and behaviour to define if the animal(s) are stressed and to propose improvements in animal welfare management. However, a visual observation alone is subjective and does not consider specific physiological markers of stress.
[0006] Currently, different indicators are used to evaluate if an animal has experienced or is experiencing stress conditions. These include,
[0007] - observations in changes in animal health status and behaviour, which is currently considered the reference tool to monitor and detect early warning signs in animal health and welfare deterioration;
[0008] - changes in blood parameters, such as glycemia, blood cell counts, levels of hormones and metabolites. However, these parameters are highly variable across different animal breeds, age, and stage of life. Moreover, the level of hormones such as cortisol passing in milk is too variable, and as such classical biomarkers are not suitable stress specific indicators.
[0009] By contrast, the expression of miRNA is specific to cells and tissues and well-regulated. loannidis et al. discloses associations of plasma microRNA expression with age, genetic background and functional traits in dairy cattle (SCIENTIFIC REPORTS (2018) 8:12955).
[0010] Miretti et al. discloses microRNAs as biomarkers for animal health and welfare in Livestock (Front. Vet. Sci. 7:578193). Billa et al. discloses that nutrigenomic analyses reveal miRNAs and mRNAs affected by feed restriction in the mammary gland of midlactation dairy cows (PLoS ONE 16(4): e0248680).
[0011] Li et al. (BMC Genomics (2018) 19:975) discloses characterization of miRNA profiles in the mammary tissue of dairy cattle in response to heat stress.
[0012] The present applicants found that 24 miRNAs are biomarkers in milk of acute stress in cattle. There is also a need to establish whether miRNAs can also act as biomarkers of stress at the herd level, and / or in processed milk products. This is important as if cattle welfare can be assessed with miRNA biomarkers at the herd level and in processed products, the welfare status of the animal can be easily communicated and confirmed to the consumer.
[0013] Hence, an improved method to non-invasively determine animal welfare in processed milk products would be advantageous, and in particular a more efficient and / or reliable method to determine animal stress, such as heat stress, would be advantageous. The present invention addresses this need.
[0014] Summary of the invention
[0015] The present invention relates to the identification of miRNA biomarkers from a processed milk sample, as indicators of welfare (or as used herein a welfare parameter) in cattle. In particular, the present invention relates to the identification of stress, particularly heat stress, in cattle, which in turn means actions can be taken to manage and improve productive animal welfare at the individual or the herd level.
[0016] Thus, an object of the present invention relates to the provision of miRNA biomarkers which can be indicative of welfare parameters in cattle, preferably dairy cattle where the sample is taken from a processed milk product.
[0017] In particular, it is an object of the present invention to provide miRNA biomarkers from biological sample derived exosomes, which can indicate heat stress in (dairy) cattle and which can be used across different breeds of (dairy) cattle.
[0018] Example 1 shows miRNA expression in bulk milk from a herd of cattle in heat stress. Example 2 shows miRNA expression in products processed from bulk milk obtained from a herd of cattle in heat stress.

Thus, a further aspect of the invention relates to a computer implemented method of determining from a processed milk product that has been subjected to at least heat treatment at around 65°C or higher whether at least one welfare parameter of at least one herd of cattle, preferably bovine, from which the milk was obtained has been compromised or not, the method comprising: providing levels of one or more miRNAs from a processed milk product produced from milk obtained from at least one herd of cattle selected from SEQ ID NOs: 1 , 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 , 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21 , 22, 23, and 24 or a functional variant thereof; providing a mathematical model comprising reference levels of one or more corresponding miRNAs selected from SEQ ID NOs: 1 , 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 , 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21 , 22, 23, and 24 prefeor a functional variant thereof; determining if the provided levels deviates significantly from the reference levels, using the mathematical model; and providing to a system or a user a determination of whether the welfare of the at least one herd of cattle has been or is compromised. In another aspect the invention relates to a computer implemented method of determining from a processed milk product whether at least one welfare parameter of at least one herd of cattle, preferably bovine, from which the milk was obtained has been compromised or not, the method comprising: providing levels of one or more miRNAs from a processed milk product produced from milk obtained from at least one herd of cattle selected from SEQ ID NOs: 1 , 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 , 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 and 18, preferably SEQ ID NOs: 16 or 17 or a functional variant thereof; providing a mathematical model comprising reference levels of one or more corresponding miRNAs selected from SEQ ID NOs: 1 , 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 , 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 and 18, preferably SEQ ID NOs: 16 or 17 or a functional variant thereof; determining if the provided levels deviates significantly from the reference levels, using the mathematical model; and providing to a system or a user a determination of whether the welfare of the at least one herd of cattle has been or is compromised.

[0240] Example 1- miRNAs as indicators of cattle welfare in bulk milk Aim of study:
[0241] 1 . To investigate which miRNA biomarkers of heat stress can be detected in bulk milk derived from herds that have experienced acute heat stress.
[0242] 2. To evaluate the period during which deregulation of the identified miRNAs can be detected in bulk milk after cattle have been returned to normal conditions.
[0243] Materials and Methods:
[0244] In mid- June, farms were provided with dataloggers to detect and store data every 30 minutes on temperature and relative humidity. Dataloggers were placed in a cubicle in the middle of the resting area of the barn, at the height of the animal’s herd. The weather forecast of each zone where a farm is located was monitored using the detailed reports of the National Airforce weather station of Gioia del Colle.
[0245] During the warmest weeks (heat waves), when Temperature Humidity Index (THI) exceeded 69, the cooling systems were turned off for four consecutive days to induce acute heat stress, and then turned on during the morning of the fifth day.
[0246] During this 4 day period, physiological patterns (respiratory rate measured visually, rectal temperature measured by digital rectal thermometer, eye, muzzle, skin and vaginal temperature images were collected by thermography camera) were recorded and bulk milk samples were collected (there was no measure on individual milk samples). As usual in these commercial farms, milk was collected in the morning and in the afternoon. We were interested in the afternoon sample (when miRNA dysregulation was expected to be largest), as well as in the sample that pools morning and afternoon milk (representative of real-life conditions).
[0247] Milk was collected in normothermia before switching off the cooling system (day 1) and on days 2, 3, and 4 during the acute heat stress period.
[0248] Cooling systems were then turned on during the morning of the fifth day and were collected on day 7, 14, and 21 of the restoring phase.
[0249] Fourteen samples of the bulk milk were collected from each farm. Milk was immediately skimmed, stored at +4°C, and frozen within 2 hours. An aliquot of milk was used to test proteins, fat, dry matter, lactose, caseins, SCC, DSCC, fatty acids categories, pH, clotting aptitude, and MUN. Part of the milk was sent to UNIMI for extra vesiculas isolation and miRNAs quantification.
[0250] This longitudinal study required only one arm to evaluate the changes induced by the acute heat-stress phase and the restoring phase. Since bulk milk is the unit of interest, the sample size is defined at the level of commercial farms, not of individual animals. Six commercial farms were sufficient to confirm at farm level the results previously observed at individual cow level.
[0251] The previous study showed significant changes induced by acute heat stress on the average of 37 cows (19 Brown Swiss and 18 Holstein). Under the assumption that the bulk milk of a farm is representative of the average of the individual milk samples, the observed effect on the average of individuals should translate on the bulk milk. Consequently, farms with ~60 animals (>37) should be sufficient to observe the effect in the bulk milk of each farm. Repeating the experiment in six farms is a minimum to generalize the results. Six commercial farms raising an average of around 60 lactating cows of Holstein, Brown Swiss, or mixed Holstein / Brown Swiss animals were included in the study. The lactating cows' barns had cooling systems installed (ventilation) which were switched off for the 4 day heat stress period.
[0252] Animals were observed during the experiment. If, during the experiment, the investigators or the farm veterinarian observed clinical signs of pathological heat stress, the animals with symptoms were promptly excluded from the experiment and placed in conditions to allow the recovery to the normal physiological state.
[0253] Biological sampling was carried out through:
[0254] 1 . Normal milking, without any changes to this procedure.
[0255] 2. Routine veterinary control included blood sampling in a limited number of animals.
[0256] Social interactions and conditions at the farms participating in the experiment were not changed for the animals. The animals were kept in a free stall housing system. The removal of manure was carried out by an automated scraper, at least three times a day. All cows were fed in the same way with same feed, formulated according to specific nutritional needs. The ration was distributed twice a day, i.e. just after the morning and after the evening milking. The space in the free stall made it possible to maintain an adequate level of well-being, animals had free access to water and resting space.
[0257] The 4 day heat stress condition in this study was kept at conditions which are normal for farms that are not equipped with ventilators.

[0259] Eighteen miRNAs were found to be deregulated in bulk milk as a result of heat stress in herds of cattle. For each of these miRNA’s, a relative change was observed over the period when heat stress was induced. Therefore, it is possible to measure for a relative change in the concentration of any of these eighteen miRNA’s in a bulk milk sample collected from a herd of cattle to obtain an indicator of the welfare of the herd, in particular as an indicator of heat stress. As we described herein, this relative change is measured relative to a reference level, which may be the level in the same herd prior to heat stress or alternatively a standard for the given breed.
[0260] The Applicants have additionally found that some miRNAs show a significant change in concentration upon induction or relief to / from heat stress.
[0261] For example, miR-2285n-1-5p, miR-30f-5p, miR-1777a-3p, miR-502b-5p, miR-500-5p, miR-339a-5p, miR-339b-5p, miR-532-3p, miR-6525-5p and miR-664b-3p (encoded by SEQ ID Nos: 1 , 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 11 , 12, 13, 14 and 15, respectively) all showed a significant alteration in concentration during the course of the experiment. These miRNAs are therefore strong indicators of cattle welfare, in particular whether a herd is undergoing or been subject to heat stress.
[0262] In particular, miR-2285n-1-5p, miR-30f-5p, miR-1777a-3p, miR-502b-5p and miR-500-5p (encoded by SEQ ID NO: 1 , 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6) all showed significant alterations in their levels between either T-1 or T1 (the period before heat stress is applied or the day when heat stress is applied) and T4 and T5 (the final day of heat stress and the day following removal of heat stress conditions). These miRNAs are therefore strong indicators for cattle welfare, and are especially useful for methods in measuring herd welfare to potentially detrimental exposures e.g. humidity. Interestingly, miR2288-3p was significantly increased after cattle had been subjected to heat stress for 4 days (T4) as shown in figure 2. Interestingly, this effect on the expression of miR2288-3p was sustained at day 5 (T5), when cooling fans had been switched back on; and day 12 (T12), 6 days after cooling fans had been switched back on. This suggests that exposure to heat stress can have prolonged effects in cattle.
[0263] In contrast to miR2288-3p, the mRNA’s miR2285n-1-5p, miR30f-5p and miR-1777a-3p were both significantly decreased in bulk milk samples after cattle were subjected to heat stress, as shown in figures 3, 4 and 3 respectively. In the case of miR2285n-1-5p this effect was sustained at day 5 (T5), when cooling fans had been switched back on; and day 12 (T12), 6 days after cooling fans had been switched back on. However, for miR30f-5p the effect was sustained at day 5 (T5), when cooling fans had been switched back on but had returned to levels resembling those seen before heat stress was applied by day 12 (T12), 6 days after cooling fans had been switched back on.

[0266] In addition to analysing bulk milk obtained from a herd of cattle, the bulk milk sample was subsequently subjected to processing and analysed further. This experiment was intended to determine if any of the changes in the above eighteen miRNAs is still detectable following processing into products. In this way, it is possible to obtain an indication of herd welfare from processed products derived from the bulk milk collected from at least one herd. Specifically, the bulk milk was split into two fractions, extracellular vesicles and whole milk; and then subjected to the heat treatment parameters and spray drying process shown in Table 3 to obtain a spray dried milk sample.

[0268] Interestingly, miR-30a-5p and miR-30b-5p - encoded by SEQ ID NO: 16 and 17, respectively - were detected in the resulting spray-dried milk. Therefore, miR-30a-5p and miR-30b-5p, can be detected in products processed from the bulk milk to obtain an indication of herd welfare.
[0269] Figure 5 shows that miR-30a-5p and miR-30b-5p were detected in extracellular vesicles derived from raw milk, pasteurised milk and spray dried milk at TO (shortly after heat stress conditions began), T5 (when cooling fans had been switched back on) and T12 (6 days after cooling fans had been switched back on. Similarly, miR-30a-5p and miR30b-5p were also detected at TO, T5 and T12 in whole milk samples derived from raw milk, pasteurised milk and spray dried milk (figure 6). This led to the question of whether the processing method affects whether these miRNAs are detected. It was shown that both miR-30a-5p and miR30b-5p were clearly detected in extracellular vesicles (figure 7) and whole milk (figure 8) that was not treated (NT), after pasteurisation (AP) and after spray drying (AS) at all three time points, TO, T5 and T12. This data indicates that miR-30a-5p and miR30b-5p can reliably be used as indicators of cattle welfare in processed milk products. Interestingly, the fact the detection of miR-30a-5p and miR30b-5p was sustained in both extracellular vesicles and whole milk at day 5 (T5), when cooling fans had been switched back on; and day 12 (T12), 6 days after cooling fans had been switched back on suggests that exposure to heat stress can have prolonged effects in cattle that can be detected in processed milk products.
Claims
Claims1. A method of determining from a processed milk product, wherein said processed milk product has been subjected to at least heat treatment at around 65°C or higher, whether at least one welfare parameter of at least one herd of cattle from which the milk was obtained has been or is compromised, the method comprising determining in the processed milk product the level of at least one miRNA, wherein the miRNA is selected from SEQ ID NO: 1 , 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 , 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21 , 22, 23, and 24 or a functional variant thereof, wherein the functional variant has at least 60% overall sequence identity to SEQ ID NO: SEQ ID NO: 1 , 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 , 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21 , 22, 23 and 24 respectively; wherein if said one or more miRNA is detected at least one welfare parameter of the at least one herd of cattle has been or is compromised.
2. A method of determining from a processed milk product whether at least one welfare parameter of at least one herd of cattle from which the milk was obtained has been or is compromised, the method comprising determining in the processed milk product the level of at least one miRNA, wherein the miRNA is selected from SEQ ID NO: 1 , 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 , 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 and 18 or a functional variant thereof, wherein the functional variant has at least 60% overall sequence identity to SEQ ID NO: SEQ ID NO: 1 , 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 , 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 and 18 respectively; wherein if said one or more miRNA is detected at least one welfare parameter of the at least one herd of cattle has been or is compromised.
3. A method of improving the welfare of at least one herd of cattle, the method comprising i. determining in a biological sample the level of at least one miRNA selected from SEQ ID NO: 1 , 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 or a functional variant thereof wherein the functional variant has at least 60% overall sequence identity to SEQ ID NO: 1 , 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 respectively; ii. comparing the level of the at least one miRNA to a reference level, wherein if said level of one or more miRNA selected from SEQ ID NO: 1 , 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 is below said one or more reference level at least one welfare parameter of the at least one herd of cattle is or has been compromised; andiii. improving the welfare of the at least one herd of cattle.
4. A method of determining whether at least one welfare parameter of at least one herd of cattle is improved, the method comprising i. determining in a first processed milk product obtained from the at least one herd of cattle the level of at least one miRNA, wherein the miRNA is selected from SEQ ID NO: 1 , 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 , 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21 , 22, 23 and 24 or a functional variant thereof, and wherein the functional variant has at least 60% overall sequence identity to SEQ ID NO: 1 , 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 , 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21 , 22, 23, and 24 respectively; wherein if said at least one miRNA is detected at least one welfare parameter of the at least one herd of cattle is or has been compromised; ii. improving the welfare of the at least one herd of cattle if at least one welfare parameter of the at least one herd of cattle is or has been compromised; iii. determining in a second processed milk product obtained from the at least one herd of cattle the level of at least one miRNA selected from SEQ ID NO: 1 , 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 , 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21 , 22, 23 and 24 or a functional variant thereof, wherein the functional variant has at least 60% overall sequence identity to SEQ ID NO: 1 , 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 , 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21 , 22, 23, and 24 respectively; and iv. comparing the level of the at least one miRNA in the second processed milk product to the first processed milk product, wherein if the level of the miRNA in the second processed milk product has decreased compared to the first processed milk product, the welfare of the herd of cattle has improved wherein said first and second processed milk products have both been subjected to at least heat treatment at around 65°C or higher.

A method of determining whether at least one welfare parameter of at least one herd of cattle is improved, the method comprisingi. determining in a first processed milk product obtained from the at least one herd of cattle the level of at least one miRNA, wherein the miRNA is selected from SEQ ID NO: 1 , 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 , 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 and 18 or a functional variant thereof, and wherein the functional variant has at least 60% overall sequence identity to SEQ ID NO: 1 , 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 , 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 and 18 respectively; wherein if said at least one miRNA is detected at least one welfare parameter of the at least one herd of cattle is or has been compromised; ii. improving the welfare of the at least one herd of cattle if at least one welfare parameter of the at least one herd of cattle is or has been compromised; iii. determining in a second processed milk product obtained from the at least one herd of cattle the level of at least one miRNA selected from SEQ ID NO: 1 , 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 , 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 and 18 a functional variant thereof, wherein the functional variant has at least 60% overall sequence identity to SEQ ID NO: 1 , 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 , 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 and 18 respectively; and iv. comparing the level of the at least one miRNA in the second processed milk product to the first processed milk product, wherein if the level of the miRNA in the second processed milk product has decreased compared to the first processed milk product, the welfare of the herd of cattle has improved.
6. A method of improving at least one of milk yield, milk quality, meat yield or meat quality of at least one herd of cattle, the method comprising i. determining in a processed milk product that has been subjected to at least heat treatment at around 65°C or higher obtained from the at least one herd of cattle the level of at least one miRNA, wherein the miRNA is selected from SEQ ID NO: 1 , 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 , 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21 , 22, 23 and 24 or a functional variant thereof wherein the functional variant has at least 60% overall sequence identity to SEQ ID NO: 1 , 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 , 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21 , 22, 23 and 24; wherein detection of the at least one miRNA is indicative that at least one welfare parameter of the at least one herd of cattle has been or is compromised; andii. if at least one welfare parameter of the at least one herd of cattle has been or is compromised, then improving the welfare of the at least one herd of cattle; wherein improving the welfare of the at least one herd of cattle improves at least one of milk yield, milk quality, meat yield and meat quality.
7. A method of improving at least one of milk yield, milk quality, meat yield or meat quality of at least one herd of cattle, the method comprising i. determining in a processed milk product obtained from the at least one herd of cattle the level of at least one miRNA, wherein the miRNA is selected from SEQ ID NO: 1 , 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 , 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 and 18 or a functional variant thereof wherein the functional variant has at least 60% overall sequence identity to SEQ ID NO: 1 , 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 , 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 and 18; wherein detection of the at least one miRNA is indicative that at least one welfare parameter of the at least one herd of cattle has been or is compromised; and ii. if at least one welfare parameter of the at least one herd of cattle has been or is compromised, then improving the welfare of the at least one herd of cattle; wherein improving the welfare of the at least one herd of cattle improves at least one of milk yield, milk quality, meat yield and meat quality.
8. The method of any preceding claim, wherein the miRNA is SEQ ID NO: 16 and / or SEQ ID NO: 17.
9. The method according to claim 3 or 4, wherein improving or altering the welfare of the at least one herd of cattle comprises one or more of changing heat exposure, improving access to additional water, changing the feed, reducing animal density and the provision of cooling systems.
10. The method according to any preceding claim, wherein the processed milk sample is from a single or plurality of breeds of cattle, wherein preferably the breed of cattle is selected from Holstein and / or Brown Swiss.
11. The method according to any preceding claim wherein the processed milk sample has been processed by at least one of pasteurisation, spray drying, homogenisation, filtration, or centrifugation.
12. The method according to any preceding claim wherein the processed milk sample is in a dairy product such as skimmed milk, yoghurt, buttermilk, cream, cheese, butter, or milk powder.
13. The method according to any preceding claim, wherein the method comprises determining the level of both of SEQ ID NO: 16 or 17 or a functional variant thereof wherein the functional variant has at least 60% overall sequence identity to SEQ ID Nos: 16 or 17 respectively.
14. A device or system adapted to determine if at least one welfare parameter of at least one herd of cattle has been or is compromised, the device comprising: i. a unit able to determine the level of one or more miRNAs selected from SEQ ID NO: 1 , 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 , 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21 , 22, 23 and 24 in a processed milk product produced from milk obtained from at least one herd of cattle; and ii. a processor configured with a reference table, said reference table corresponding to reference levels of one or more miRNA; wherein the device or system is adapted to; receive a processed milk product produced from milk obtained from at least one herd of cattle; determine the levels of the one or more miRNAs in the processed milk product; compare the determined levels of the one or more miRNAs to the reference value; and determine if the welfare of the at least one herd of cattle has been or is compromised.

A computer implemented method of determining if the welfare of at least one herd of cattle has been compromised, the method comprising: i. providing levels of one or more miRNAs from a processed milk product produced from milk obtained from at least one herd of cattle selected from SEQ ID NOs: 1 , 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 , 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19,20, 21 , 22, 23 and 24 , preferably SEQ ID NO: 16 and / or 17 or a functional variant thereof; ii. providing a mathematical model comprising reference levels of one or more corresponding miRNAs selected from SEQ ID NOs: 1 , 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 , 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21 , 22, 23 and 24, preferably SEQ ID NO: 16 and / or 17 or a functional variant thereof; iii. determining if the provided levels deviates significantly from the reference levels, using the mathematical model; and iv. providing to a system or a user a determination of whether the welfare of the at least one herd of cattle has been or is compromised.
16. A kit for evaluating at least one welfare parameter of at least one herd of cattle in a processed milk product, the kit comprising the device of claim 13 and instructions for use.

A kit for determining from a processed milk product whether at least welfare parameter of at least one herd of cattle from which from which the milk was obtained has been or is compromised, wherein said kit comprises: i. a means for collecting a sample of the processed milk product obtained from at least one herd of cattle ; and ii. a unit for measuring the level of at least one miRNA selected from SEQ ID NO: 1 , 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 , 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21 , 22, 23 and 24 in the processed milk product sample; and iii. instructions for use.
