[0001] RETRACTABLE SCREEN ASSEMBLY

[0002] BACKGROUND

[0003] The present invention relates to a retractable screen assembly, a retractable screen system, a track system for a retractable screen having a drawbar, a method of operating a retractable screen assembly and a method of installing a retractable screen assembly.

[0004] Retractable screen assemblies are known. A known retractable screen assembly comprises a retractable screen with a drawbar attached to the screen. The retractable screen is attached to a rotationally biased roller provided in a screen housing. A handle is provided on the drawbar. In order to extend the screen to an extended position it is necessary to pull the screen against tension and then secure the screen in the extended position.

[0005] A known way of securing the retractable screen in an extended position is to use a magnet in an end portion of the drawbar and locating a corresponding magnet in the housing of a receiver portion. Accordingly, the retractable screen is held in an extended position by utilising magnets.

[0006] However, a problem with the known arrangement is that the screen is not particularly secure in the extended position. Furthermore, the springs which rotationally bias the roller in the screen housing are placed under considerable load potentially for an extended period of time.

[0007] Accordingly, it is desired to provide an improved retractable screen assembly.

[0008] SUMMARY

[0009] According to an aspect there is provided a retractable screen assembly comprising: a retractable screen; and a drawbar attached to the screen, wherein the drawbar is arranged and adapted to allow a user to move the screen between a retracted position and an extended position; wherein: the drawbar further comprises one or more retractable detent members, wherein in a first mode of operation the one or more retractable detent members may be moved into or allowed to assume a first position to secure the screen in an extended position and wherein in a second mode of operation the one or more retractable detent members may be moved into or allowed to assume a second position to allow the screen to be at least partially retracted.

[0010] A retractable screen assembly according to various embodiments is advantageous in that the retractable detent member(s) which are utilised according to various embodiments provide a more secure and stronger way of securing the retractable screen in an extended position.

For example, recesses or cut-outs can be provided at one or more intermediate positions along the length of the tracks enabling the screen to be secured in a variety of different partially open positions which provide partial screening and partial ventilation.

[0014] A yet further advantage is that the tracks can be arranged in linear, curved or L- shaped arrangements and two screens can be installed in the same space, wherein in a closed position the drawbars of the two screens abut against each other directly without requiring a receiver portion.

[0015] Another advantage is that the one or more retractable detent members when in a retracted position may ride along one or more of the rails forming a track and can have a self-cleaning function.

[0016] It will be appreciated that the track can be customised and can be run around corners to meet or abut against another drawbar.

According to various embodiments the lower track may have a relatively low profile which facilitates unimpeded movement over the lower track. [0055] Fig. 1 shows a retractable screen assembly 100 according to various embodiments. The retractable screen assembly 100 comprises a retractable screen 1 and a drawbar 2 which is attached along an edge of the screen 1 . The drawbar 2 has a handle 4 which enables a user to slide the screen 1 along upper and lower tracks 10,20. In particular, the screen 1 may be slid by a user between a retracted position wherein the screen 1 is retracted into a screen housing 5 and a fully extended position as shown in Fig. 1 wherein the drawbar 2 attached to the screen 1 abuts against a receiver portion (not shown).

[0056] However, as will be described in more detail below, other embodiments are also contemplated wherein the screen 1 may be secured in one or more partially extended positions i.e. a position in between a fully retracted position and a fully extended position. Furthermore, the action of the one or more retractable detent members 3a, 3b engaging with one or more recesses or cut-outs provided in a portion of one or both rails of the upper and / or lower tracks 10,20 is sufficient to resist the tension applied to the screen 1 by a retraction mechanism provided within the screen housing 5. In a second mode of operation the one or more retractable detent members 3a, 3b may be moved or actuated into a different second position to allow the screen 1 to be at least partially or fully retracted. In particular, in the second mode of operation the one or more retractable detent members 3a, 3b may be moved or actuated out of engagement with or from the one or more recesses or cut-outs 30 provided in a portion of one or more rails of a track 10,20, thereby allowing the screen 1 to be slid along the upper and lower tracks 10,20.

Claims

Claims1 . A retractable screen assembly comprising: a retractable screen; and a drawbar attached to the screen, wherein the drawbar is arranged and adapted to allow a user to move the screen between a retracted position and an extended position; wherein: the drawbar further comprises one or more retractable detent members, wherein in a first mode of operation the one or more retractable detent members may be moved into or allowed to assume a first position to secure the screen in an extended or partially extended position and wherein in a second mode of operation the one or more retractable detent members may be moved into or allowed to assume a second position to allow the screen to be at least partially retracted.

2. A retractable screen assembly as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the one or more retractable detent members comprise a first or upper detent member and a second or lower detent member.

A retractable screen assembly as claimed in claim 2, further comprising one or more first or upper track members and one or more second or lower track members, wherein the first retractable detent member is arranged to slide, in use, along the one or more first or upper track members and wherein the second retractable detent member is arranged to slide, in use, along the one or more second or lower track members.

A retractable screen assembly as claimed in claim 3, wherein a portion of the one or more first or upper track members has one or more first recesses or cut-outs and wherein in the first mode of operation the first retractable detent member engages with the one or more first recesses or cut-outs in order to secure the screen in an extended or partially extended position and wherein the one or more second or lower track members has one or more second recesses or cut-outs and wherein in the first mode of operation the second retractable detent member engages with the one or more second recesses or cut-outs in order to secure the screen in an extended or partially extended position.

5. A retractable screen assembly as claimed in any of claims 2, 3 or 4, further comprising: a first housing secured to or forming part of a first end of the drawbar, wherein the first retractable detent member is housed within the first housing; and a second housing secured to or forming part of a second end of the drawbar, wherein the second retractable detent member is housed within the second housing.

A retractable screen assembly as claimed in claim 5, wherein:the first housing further comprises a first biasing member for biasing the first retractable detent member so that the first retractable detent member extends beyond the first housing in the first mode of operation; and the second housing further comprises a second biasing member for biasing the second retractable detent member so that the second retractable detent member extends beyond the second housing in the first mode of operation.

7. A retractable screen assembly as claimed in claim 6, wherein the drawbar further comprises a handle and a linking mechanism, wherein the handle is connected to a first rod member via the linking mechanism and wherein the handle is connected to a second rod member via the linking mechanism.

A retractable screen assembly as claimed in claim 7, wherein the handle is rotatable or translatable so that in the second mode of operation rotation or translation of the handle causes the linking mechanism to at least partially retract the first rod member into the first housing and the second rod member into the second housing, thereby facilitating a user being above to move or slide the drawbar to a different position.

A retractable screen assembly as claimed in any preceding claim, further comprising a screen housing, wherein when the screen is in a retracted position at least a portion of the screen is retracted into the screen housing and wherein when the screen is in an extended position at least a portion of the screen extends beyond the screen housing.

A retractable screen assembly as claimed in claim 9, wherein the screen housing further comprises a biasing mechanism, wherein the biasing mechanism applies a retraction force to the screen so as to cause the screen to retract into the screen housing and wherein a user must apply an opposed extension force to the drawbar in order to overcome the retraction force and cause the screen to assume an extended position.11 . A retractable screen assembly as claimed in claim 10, wherein an end of the screen is mounted to one or more rollers, and wherein the biasing mechanism comprises one or more springs arranged for rotationally biasing the one or more rollers.

12. A retractable screen system comprising: a first or upper track; a second or lower track; and a retractable screen assembly as claimed in claim 1 , wherein the retractable screen assembly is mounted or mountable so as to slide along the first or upper track and / or to slide along the second or lower track.

13. A retractable screen system as claimed in claim 12, further comprising one or more receiver sections arranged to maintain the first or upper track and the second or lower track in a spaced relationship.

14. A retractable screen system comprising: a first or upper track; a second or lower track; a first retractable screen assembly having a first screen and a first drawbar, wherein a first end portion of the first drawbar is arranged to slide along the first or upper track and / or a second end portion of the first drawbar is arranged to slide along the second or lower track; and a second retractable screen assembly having a second screen and a second drawbar, wherein a first end portion of the second drawbar is arranged to slide along the first or upper track and / or a second end portion of the second drawbar is arranged to slide along the second or lower track.

15. A retractable screen system as claimed in claim 14, wherein the first or upper track and the second or lower track are arranged, in use, to form a linear, curved or L- shaped track.

16. A retractable screen system as claimed in claim 14 or 15, wherein when the first screen is in an extended position and the second screen is in an extended position, then a portion of the first drawbar is arranged to abut against a portion of the second drawbar.

17. A track system for a retractable screen having a drawbar, wherein the track system comprises: one or more track sections for engaging with an end portion of a drawbar; and one or more latch sections, wherein the one or more latch sections are connected or connectable either: (i) to an end of a track section; (ii) between two track sections; (iii) between a track section and another latch section; or (iv) between two other latch sections.

18. A method of operating a retractable screen assembly comprising: providing a retractable screen having a drawbar attached to the screen, wherein the drawbar comprises one or more retractable detent members; using the drawbar to move the screen from a retracted position to an extended position; and allowing the one or more retractable detent members to engage with a recess or cut-out provided in a track in order to secure the screen in the extended position.

19. A method of operating a retractable screen assembly comprising:providing a retractable screen having a drawbar attached to the screen, wherein the drawbar further comprises one or more retractable detent members and a handle connected to one or more retractable detent members via a linking mechanism; rotating or moving the handle to cause the linking mechanism to withdraw the one or more retractable detent members out of engagement with a recess or cut-out provided in a track in order for the screen to be moved; and using the drawbar to move the screen from an extended position to a retracted position.

20. A method of manufacturing or installing a retractable screen assembly comprising: providing a retractable screen; and attaching a drawbar to the screen, wherein the drawbar is arranged and adapted to allow a user to move the screen between a retracted position and an extended position; and installing in the drawbar one or more retractable detent members, wherein in a first mode of operation the one or more retractable detent members may be moved into or allowed to assume a first position to secure the screen in an extended or partially extended position and wherein in a second mode of operation the one or more retractable detent members may be moved into or allowed to assume a second position to allow the screen to be at least partially or fully retracted.
