Abstract
A system for accounting for drift of a position sensor. The system includes a position sensor, a robotic instrument including a first tracker, and an electronic processor. The electronic processor is configured to determine a matrix defining a position of the position sensor in a coordinate system, control movement of the robotic instrument to a predefined position, and capture, with the position sensor, a first position of the first tracker. The electronic processor is configured to, in response to determining that a predetermined amount of time has passed since the first position was captured, control movement of the robotic instrument to the predefined position, capture a second position of the first tracker with the position sensor, determine, based on a difference between the first position of the first tracker and the second position of the first tracker, a drift matrix, and update the matrix based on the drift matrix.
