Description

Emulsifier for Polyamide Curing Agent CompositionField of the Invention

[0001] The present invention relates to modified polyamide emulsifier which can be used as an external emulsifier for polyamide curing agent. The present invention also relates to the two component waterborne epoxy coating composition and the coated article prepared from the same.Background of the Invention

[0002] Polyamide is a class of polymers with amide groups (-CO-NH-) in the repeating units of the macromolecular main chain. It plays a pivotal role as a curing agent for epoxy emulsion coatings in the industrial coating sector, especially in heavy-duty corrosion protection applications such as the protection of containers and ship hulls, owing to its exceptional durability, chemical resistance, and thermal stability.

[0003] In recent years, rising environmental concerns have sparked a movement away from traditional paint formulations that emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs) . This shift has sparked significant interest in developing more environmentally friendly, water-based polyamide hardeners. The aim is to reduce emissions, comply with global green manufacturing standards, while maintaining or even improving the quality of paints.

[0004] However, the transition of polyamide curing agents from oil based to waterborne systems has encountered multiple challenges. A primary obstacle lies in the inherent viscosity of polyamides, which hinders their uniform dispersion in water, thus complicating the application process. Additionally, due to their hydrophobic nature, polyamide hardeners tend to separate as oily precipitates when mixed with water, affecting the stability and shelf life of the paint.

[0005] Furthermore, the incompatibility between polyamide hardeners and the emulsified epoxy resin droplets in water-based paints can lead to incomplete hardening. This results in coatings that are weak, lack adhesion,  and are susceptible to weathering, failing to meet stringent performance standards.

[0006] Lastly, when polyamides dissolve in water, they form hydrogen bonds, significantly increasing the viscosity of the mixture and limiting its thinning capabilities. This hinders the ease of application and manipulation of the paint.

[0007] Currently, the primary strategies to address these challenges focus on resin modification techniques, such as the utilization of polyethylene glycol (PEG) , epoxy resin derivatives, polyamide-acrylic copolymers, or direct modification of the polyamide molecular structure to enhance water solubility, thus obtaining water-soluble waterborne polyamide curing agents. Nonetheless, these methods bear notable limitations, including elevated costs, technical intricacy, lack of universality, potential alteration of the amine value, and detrimental effects on the water resistance and other vital properties of the cured products.

[0008] Therefore, it is still desired to provide an aqueous polyamide hardener composition with desired viscosity and stability.Summary of the Invention

[0009] The present invention provide an external emulsification process to emulsify aqueous polyamide hardener composition, rather than the current existing resin modification techniques. Specifically, the present invention provide an emulsifier which can emulsify polyamide hardener without any detrimental effect to the performance thereof, especially not change the amine value of the polyamide hardener.

[0010] In one aspect of the present invention, it is provided a modified polyamide emulsifier, prepared by the process comprising the steps of

[0011] i) obtaining a polyamide by the polycondensation of dimer fatty acid and polyamines;

[0012] ii) modifying the polyamide with a poly (alkyl diols) glycidyl ether, wherein the poly (alkyl diols) glycidyl ether is represented by the formula I  and has a weight average molecular weight of 500 to 10,000, preferably 2000 to 6000,

[0013] wherein m, n, p, q, and x each are integers ranging from 0 to 50 provided that m, n, p and q cannot be 0 at the same time, R is an C1 to C4 alkyl; and

[0014] iii) modifying the polyamide with hydrophobic monomers selected from C2-C18 alcohol glycidyl ether, C1 to C18 carboxylic acid, and C2 to C36 anhydride.

[0015] In another aspect of the present invention, it is provided a waterborne polyamide curing agent composition comprising the modified polyamide emulsifier as illustrated above.

[0016] In yet another aspect of the present invention, it is provided a two component waterborne epoxy coating composition, comprising

[0017] a) an epoxy resin; and

[0018] b) the waterborne polyamide curing agent composition as illustrated above.

[0019] In still another aspect of the present invention, it is provided a coated article, comprising a substrate and a coating layer applied on the substrate, wherein the coating layer is formed by applying the two component waterborne epoxy coating composition onto the substrate.Detailed description of the Invention

[0020] 1. Modified polyamide emulsifier

[0021] In one aspect of the present invention, it is provided a modified polyamide emulsifier, particularly to emulsify polyamide hardener formulation. The modified polyamide emulsifier is prepared by the process comprising the steps of

[0022] i) obtaining a polyamide by the polycondensation of dimer fatty acid and polyamines;

[0023] ii) modifying the polyamide with a poly (alkyl diols) glycidyl ether, wherein the poly (alkyl diols) glycidyl ether is represented by the formula I and has a weight average molecular weight of 500 to 10,000, preferably 2000 to 6000,

[0024] wherein m, n, p, q, and x each are integers ranging from 0 to 50 provided that m, n, p and q cannot be 0 at the same time, R is an C1 to C4 alkyl; R is an C1 to C4 alkyl; and

[0025] iii) modifying the polyamide with hydrophobic monomers selected from C2-C18 alcohol glycidyl ether, C1 to C18 carboxylic acid, and C2 to C36 anhydride.

[0026] The polyamide which can be used in the present invention can be prepared by the polycondensation of dimer fatty acid and polyamines.

[0027] “Dimerized” or “dimer” or “polymerized” fatty acid refers, in a general way, to polymerized acids obtained from unsaturated fatty acids. They are described more fully in T. E. Breuer, as noted above, which description is incorporated by reference. Common monofunctional unsaturated fatty acids used in making the dimer acid compositions include tall oil fatty acid (TOFA) , soya fatty acid and cottonseed fatty acid. The dimer acids are prepared by polymerizing the fatty acids under pressure, and then removing most of the unreacted fatty mono-acids by distillation. The final product comprises mostly dimeric acids, but includes trimeric as well as some higher acids. The ratio of dimeric acids to trimeric and higher acids is variable, depending on processing conditions and the unsaturated acid feedstock. The dimer acid may also be further processed by, for example, hydrogenation, which reduces the degree of unsaturation and the color of the product.

[0028] Suitable for the purposes of the present invention are dimer acids with a dimer content as measured by GC ranging from about 50 wt %to about 95 wt %, and a trimer and higher acid content of from about 3 wt %to about 40 wt %, the remainder being monomeric fatty acids. However, as the amount of trimer acid is increased, it will be necessary to increase the amount of polyamine and / or the amount of fatty mono-acid in order to maintain the desired viscosity of the final product, since the higher functionality of the trimeric and higher fatty acids will lead to more branching and increase the molecular weight in the product, and may even gel the product, as will be appreciated by those skilled in the art. Esters of dimer acids, particularly the C1 to C4 alkyl esters, can also be employed in the current invention.

[0029] In one embodiment of the present invention, the dimer fatty acid is the one or more selected from saturated or unsaturated C8 to C30 aliphatic dimer fatty acid, C8 to C30 alicyclic dimer fatty acid, C8 to C30 and aromatic dimer fatty acid, preferably the dimer fatty acid is a dimer of C18 to C30 unsaturated aliphatic acid, preferably C12 to C18 unsaturated aliphatic acid, more preferably the dimer fatty acid is a dimer of linoleic acid, oleic acid, linolenic acid, soybean oil acid, elaidic acid, and eleurotic acid.

[0030] In one embodiment of the present invention, some fatty acids can be blended with the dimer fatty acid, such fatty acids include, but not limited to tall oil fatty acid and soya fatty acid.

[0031] If desired, other monofunctional and multifunctional carboxylic acids may be incorporated into the dimer acid portion of the reaction composition.

[0032] The polyamine refers to the amine compounds bearing two or more amine groups (-NH2-) . The polyamine which can be employed in the present invention includes, but not limited to, ethylenediamine, propylenediamine, butylenediamine, 2-methyl-1, 5-pentanediamine, 1, 6-hexanediamine, m-xylylenediamine, p-xylylenediamine, 1, 3-bis(aminomethyl) cyclohexylamine, 1-ethyl-1, 3-propanediamine, p-aminodicyclohexylmethane, 2, 2, 4-trimethyl-1, 6-hexanediamine, diethyltoluene diamine, isophorone diamine, and polyethylene ether amine.

[0033] Polyamides of the present invention can be manufactured by any number of processes known to those skilled in the art. Normally, the amines and acids are combined at temperatures ranging from about room temperature to about 100 ℃. Heat is then supplied to raise the temperature as water is condensed from the reaction mixture. Heating is normally continued until the specified amount of water is removed that will yield a product with the desired amide and imidazoline or tetrahydropyrimidine content. Optionally, vacuum can be applied particularly in the late stages of the process to aid in the removal of water from the mixture. To reduce foaming, which can be a problem particularly under vacuum conditions, small amounts of defoamers may be added to the polyamide composition. Appropriate defoamers include various acrylic copolymers containing 2-ethylhexyl acrylate as part of the copolymer composition, various polysiloxane copolymers, and the like.

[0034] During the condensation reaction, it is possible to cause some of the amine functional amides to cyclize with further loss of water to form imidazoline and tetrahydropyrimidines. All possible levels of imidazoline and tetrahydropyrimidine functionality of the polyamide compound are considered to be part of the current invention.

[0035] The polyamide compound as above prepared is further modified with poly (alkyl diols) glycidyl ether, wherein the poly (alkyl diols) glycidyl ether is represented by the formula I and has a weight average molecular weight of 500 to 10,000, preferably 2000 to 6000,

[0036] wherein m, n, p, q, and x each are integers ranging from 0 to 50 provided that m, n, p and q cannot be 0 at the same time, R is an C1 to C4 alky.

[0037] The polyamide compound as above prepared is further modified with hydrophobic monomers selected from C2-C18 alcohol glycidyl ether, C1 to C18 carboxylic acid, and C2 to C36 anhydride.

[0038] In the present invention, the polyamide obtained in step i) is further modified with poly (alkyl diols) glycidyl ether (step ii) and hydrophobic monomers (step iii) , wherein the step ii) can be performed in advance to or after step iii) .

[0039] In one embodiment of the present invention, the modified polyamide emulsifier as prepared above has an amine value higher than 380, determined by titration.

[0040] 2. Waterbone polyamide curing agent

[0041] The polyamide curing agent used in the present invention is not particularly limited as long as it is a curing agent containing a compound (polyamide compound) that has a polyamide structure in the molecule and has at least two active hydrogens. In the present specification, "active hydrogen" refers to hydrogen bonded to a nitrogen atom of an amino group in a polyamide compound and a polyamine compound.

[0042] A general method can be used as the method for producing the polyamide compound used for the polyamide amine-based curing agent. For example, the polyamide compound can be obtained by a condensation reaction between a polyamine compound and the dimer fatty acid. At this time, the amount of active hydrogens in the obtained polyamide compound can be adjusted by adjusting the ratio of the polyamine compound and the dimer fatty acid used in the reaction.

[0043] The dimer fatty acid and the polyamine compound are defined as above.

[0044] The polyamide curing agent may be a single polyamide curing agent, a mixture of two or more polyamide curing agents, or a mixture of at least one polyamide curing agent and another co-curing agent compound different from the polyamide curing agent. The polyamide curing agent, may include at least one polyamide hardener. The curing agent can also be referred to as "hardener" or a "crosslinking agent" , it may be blended with the epoxy resin and the other components of the composition, to prepare the curable epoxy resin formulation or composition. The curable epoxy resin composition may then be cured under curing conditions to form a cured product or thermoset which is in the form of a solid cured coating.

[0045] The polyamide curing agent may be selected from one or more of the following chemical compounds including amino polyamides, amidopolyamides, and mixtures thereof. Non-limiting examples of some commercial polyamide hardeners may include YD-8115A and YD 8200N from Wilmar Intl., H3210 and H2360 from ACR, Ancamide 2839 from Evonik, Aradur 3951 from HUNTSMAN.

[0046] The waterborne polyamide curing agent composition of the present invention comprises the modified polyamide emulsifier and the polyamide curing agent as defined above. The modified polyamide emulsifier is employed as an external emulsifier to emulsify the polyamide curing agent, thus provide the waterborne composition.

[0047] Some additives and adjuvants can be added to the waterborne composition if needed.

[0048] The waterborne polyamide curing agent composition has no solvent or active dilute therein, therefore it is low VOCs and more environment friendly. On the other hand, because of the external emulsification, the amine value of the polyamide curing agent doesn’t’ changed, therefore there is no detrimental effect to the curing agent’s performance.

[0049] 3. The two component waterborne epoxy coating composition

[0050] In another aspect of the present invention, it is provided a two component waterborne epoxy coating composition, comprising

[0051] a) an epoxy resin; and

[0052] b) the waterborne polyamide curing agent composition as illustrated above.

[0068] Examples

[0069] 1. Synthesis of the Polyamide

[0070] The polyamide is prepared by the polycondensation of the Oleic dimer acid and triethylenetetramine, the process can be referred to CN102030900A.

[0071] The amine value was determined by titration which is specifically described as below:

[0072] - Weigh 0.5g sample accurately to the nearest 0.001g (note weight) into a 100mL Plastic titration cup.

[0073] - Add to the cup 3-4 mL of Tetraethylammonium bromide solution and 30 mL glacial acetic acid and stir to dissolve. Use gently heat if necessary.

[0074] - On titrator T50, titrate sample with 0.1 N perchloric acid to the potentiometric end point. Note volume of perchloric acid consumed.

[0075] The polyamides obtained as above were further modified by MPEG epoxy and hydrophobic monomers. MPEG epoxy was prepared as follows:

[0076] - Charge MPEG 500g into a 1 L four-neck flask. The flask has one inlet for N2 and one outlet. The flask was deep into a water bath. The temperature of the water bath was set as 70℃.

[0077] - When all the MPEG was melt, the agitator was open and the agitating speed was set as 200-300rpm.

[0078] - 1g water and 8.47g KOH (91.07%) were added into the flask.

[0079] - After the reaction mixture was stirred at 70℃ for 1 h, 13.88g epichlorohydrin was added into the flask.

[0080] - The reaction mixture was kept being stirred at 70 ℃. The reaction was tracked by sampling for PH test (5g / L water solution) and epoxy value test.

[0081] - When the PH of the sample was less than 8, N2 blowing was opened to remove water.

[0082] - When no obvious water remaining in the flask, all the reaction mixture was discharged.

[0083] After MPEG-epoxy was obtained, it was used to modify the polyamide as follows, thereby the emulsifiers were obtained:

[0084] - Charge MPEG-epoxy 100g and 20g YD8140A into a 250L four necks flask. The flask has one inlet for N2 and one outlet. The flask was deep into an oil bath. The temperature of the water bath was set as 70℃.

[0085] - When all the MPEG-epoxy was melted, the agitator was open and the agitating speed was set as 200-300 rpm. Sample for epoxy value +amine value and amine value test to track this reaction.

[0086] - When the epoxy value + amine value was stable, hydrophobic monomers were added into the four necks flask, MPEG was added as solvent if needed.

[0087] - Take a sample for amine value + epoxy value test. When the value was stable, all the reaction mixture was discharged.

[0088] -

[0089] 3. The emulsification performance

[0090] The emulsifiers (10g) obtained as above was dissolved with 55g DI water into a light yellow clear solution with stirring. Add 100g polyamide hardener (Y-8140A) into the emulsifier solution, slowly stir the mixture using an anchor or paddle mixture, the mixing speed is 100-200 rpm, until the light yellow viscous mixture is homogeneous. Keep low speed stirring, dilute the viscous mixture with 55 g DI water slowly, to yield a light yellow emulsion.

[0091] The emulsions with solid content of 50%, 45%, 40%, 35%, 30%, 25%, 20%were obtained, and the viscosity was determined by spindle 04 at 30 rpm. The particle size distribution (PSD) was d (90) data determined according to ISO13321: 1996 with Malvern ZEN3600 Nano-ZS.

[0092] As shown in table 1 as below, the emulsifier modified by hydrophobic monomers shows good emulsification performance, however those not modified don’t show any performance, meaning the hydrophobic modification is essential to the performance of the emulsifiers. As shown in table 2 as below, the hydrophobic monomers of AGE, lauryl acid and acetic anhydride can result an aqueous emulsion.

[0093] Table 1: hydrophobic monomer modified emulsifier

[0094] AGE: C12 alcohol glycidyl ether

[0095] Table 2: hydrophobic monomers

[0096] 4. The coating composition

[0097] The aqueous emulsion prepared as above was stirred at low stirring speed, the epoxy resin (NPEL-128) was added fully mixed to provide the coating composition.

[0098] The coating composition as prepared was applied on a plastic substrate, wet film 200 μm (50%SC%, 100μm dried film) , and kept at R. T. for 7 days till totally dried and test the performance as follows:

[0099] - Hardness was determined according to GB / T 1730-93

[0100] - Gloss was measured at the 60 ° gloss of film after dried at R. T. for 7 days with BYK micro-TRI-gloss

[0101] - Leveling was measured at the 85° gloss of film after dried at R. T. for 7 days with BYK micro-TRI-gloss

[0102] - Tapping was determined by using fingers to tap the film and determine whether sticky or not, after drying for 1, 3 and 7 days at R.T.

[0103] - Solvent resistance was determined according to GB / T 30648.4-2015

[0104] - Anti Scrub was measured by the weight loss and appearance after scrub, by BGD 521 from BIuged, 750g, 500 cycles with ethanol.

[0105] As it is shown in the table 3, the coating performance was maintained after adding the emulsifier of the present invention.
