Abstract

Methods and apparatus are provided for a user equipment (UE) -initiated beam report (UEIBR) in a wireless network. In response to an event trigger, a UE transmits a request to a base station in a first uplink (UL) channel. The request is for a resource of a second UL channel allocated for the UEIBR. The UE starts a beam report timer upon transmitting the request. While the beam report timer is running, the UE monitors downlink control information (DCI) for an indication of the resource for the second UL channel. When the beam report timer expires before detecting the indication, the UE retransmits the request in the first UL channel and restarts the beam report timer. In response to detecting the indication when the beam report timer is running, the UE transmits the UEIBR to the base station using the resource indicated for the second UL channel.

Description

METHODS FOR UE-INITIATED BEAM REPORT ON DYNAMICALLY-GRANTED PUSCH IN WIRELESS COMMUNICATIONSTECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] This application relates generally to wireless communication systems, including systems with beam reporting.BACKGROUND

[0002] Wireless mobile communication technology uses various standards and protocols to transmit data between a base station and a wireless communication device. Wireless communication system standards and protocols can include, for example, 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Long Term Evolution (LTE) (e.g., 4G) , 3GPP New Radio (NR) (e.g., 5G) , and Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11 standard for Wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN) (commonly known to industry groups as  ) .

[0003] As contemplated by the 3GPP, different wireless communication systems'standards and protocols can use various radio access networks (RANs) for communicating between a base station of the RAN (which may also sometimes be referred to generally as a RAN node, a network node, or simply a node) and a wireless communication device known as a user equipment (UE) . 3GPP RANs can include, for example, Global System for Mobile communications (GSM) , Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE) RAN (GERAN) , Universal Terrestrial Radio Access Network (UTRAN) , Evolved Universal Terrestrial Radio Access Network (E-UTRAN) , and / or Next-Generation Radio Access Network (NG-RAN) .

[0004] Each RAN may use one or more radio access technologies (RATs) to perform communication between the base station and the UE. For example, the GERAN implements GSM and / or EDGE RAT, the UTRAN implements Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS) RAT or other 3GPP RAT, the E-UTRAN implements LTE RAT (sometimes simply referred to as LTE) , and NG-RAN implements NR RAT (sometimes referred to herein as 5G RAT, 5G NR RAT, or simply NR) . In certain deployments, the E-UTRAN may also implement NR RAT. In certain deployments, NG-RAN may also implement LTE RAT.

[0005] A base station used by a RAN may correspond to that RAN. One example of an E-UTRAN base station is an Evolved Universal Terrestrial Radio Access Network (E-UTRAN) Node B (also commonly denoted as evolved Node B, enhanced Node B, eNodeB, or eNB) . One example of an NG-RAN base station is a next generation Node B (also sometimes referred to as a g Node B or gNB) .

[0006] A RAN provides its communication services with external entities through its connection to a core network (CN) . For example, E-UTRAN may utilize an Evolved Packet Core (EPC) while NG-RAN may utilize a 5G Core Network (5GC) .

[0015] FIG. 7 illustrates a system for performing signaling between a wireless device and a network device, according to embodiments disclosed herein.DETAILED DESCRIPTION

[0016] Various embodiments are described with regard to a UE. However, reference to a UE is merely provided for illustrative purposes. The example embodiments may be utilized with any electronic component that may establish a connection to a network and is configured with the hardware, software, and / or firmware to exchange information and data with the network. Therefore, the UE as described herein is used to represent any appropriate electronic component.

[0017] UE-Initiated Beam Reporting

[0018] Certain wireless communication systems support beam management procedures that can improve the direction and strength of a beam for efficient communication between a base station and a UE. Certain beam management procedures may be supported for NR.  These features may include, but are not limited to, beamforming, beam selection, beam tracking, and beam switching. In certain systems, the network (NW) can initiate a beam management procedure. Beam reporting allows the network to timely acquire the best beam for data and control transmissions. For example, the network can configure and / or activate frequent periodic or semi-persistent beam reporting or trigger frequent aperiodic beam reporting. In some examples, N best beams and corresponding layer 1 reference signal received powers (L1-RSRPs) can be used in beam reporting and management. These methods, however, can result in large overhead due to uplink (UL) reporting and control signaling. Conversely, without frequent beam reporting, the network may not receive timely beam reporting from the UE. This can result in degraded performance, as the network may not always acquire the best or preferred beam (s) for transmissions.

[0019] In certain wireless communication systems, the UE has better and more timely knowledge than the network of beam quality changes. Therefore, a UE-initiated beam reporting (UEIBR) procedure can lead to more timely beam reports. In addition, UEIBR can lead to reduced reporting overhead. In some NR systems, a UE-initiated and / or event-driven beam management can be facilitated to reduce overhead and / or latency. In these systems, unified transmission configuration indication (TCI) may be used with CSI measurement and reporting configuration frameworks that are already in place to target frequency range 2 (FR2) and single transmission reception point (sTRP) implementations that enable intra-cell and inter-cell beam management. To facilitate UE-initiated and / or event-driven beam management that supports fast beam switching, the UL signaling content (s) and procedure (s) have yet to be determined. Additionally, the UL signaling medium and / or container that is designed primarily for the purpose of beam reporting and considers the UE-initiated and / or event-driven nature of the UL transmission has yet to be determined.

[0020] For UEIBR, a beam report transmission procedure can support at least one of a Mode A or a Mode B. Mode A supports dynamically scheduling uplink control information (UCI) by a gNB. In Mode A, a UE can transmit in a first UL channel, such as a physical uplink control channel (PUCCH) (e.g., one-bit) , to request a resource for a second UL channel. The UE may transmit the first UL channel in response to an event trigger. The event trigger may include, for example, when a quality of at least one new beam, such as L1-RSRP, becomes a threshold amount better than the quality of a current beam. The UE can then detect the downlink control information (DCI) format that indicates a resource for a second UL channel to carry the beam report. The UE then transmits the beam report in the second UL channel. However, certain details for Mode A have not yet been determined, such as details on the second UL channel (e.g., whether the second UL channel is a PUCCH,  a physical uplink shared channel (PUSCH) , or both) or how to trigger the UEIBR by the UL-grant DCI format.

[0021] Mode B supports preconfigured resources for a second UL channel for UCI. In Mode B, a UE can transmit a notification in a first channel, such as a PUCCH, that a second UL channel will carry the beam report. In some examples, a periodic PUCCH resource (with PUCCH format 0 / 1) can be configured by dedicated radio resource configuration (RRC) signaling. The UE can then transmit the beam report in the second UL channel.

[0022] In certain wireless communication systems, support for simultaneous configuration of a NW-initiated beam reporting and UEIBR can be preferred. Certain embodiments disclosed herein address how to differentiate the DCI format received at the UE in Mode A from the DCI format used for a physical uplink shared channel (PUSCH) and / or NW-initiated aperiodic CSI report. In addition, the first UL channel in Mode A may experience decoding failures. A decoding failure on a UE request for a resource for a second UL channel can prohibit a UE from receiving a resource for a second UL channel and transmitting a beam report on the second UL channel. It follows that support for retransmission of the first channel in Mode A may be required. Certain embodiments disclosed herein address how to enable retransmission of the first UL channel in Mode A.

[0023] Resource Indication for the Second UL Channel in Mode A

[0024] Some embodiments disclosed herein provide a method for a UE to transmit a UEIBR to a base station in a wireless network. In certain such embodiments, in response to an event trigger, the UE transmits a request to a base station in a first UL channel. The request is for a resource of a second UL channel allocated for the UEIBR. The UE starts a beam report timer upon transmitting the request. While the beam report timer is running, the UE monitors DCI for an indication of the resource for the second UL channel. When the beam report timer expires before the UE detects the indication, the UE retransmits the request in the first UL channel and restarts the beam report timer. In response to detecting the indication while the beam report timer is still running, the UE transmits the UEIBR to the base station. The UEIBR can be transmitted using the resource indicated for the second UL channel.

[0025] Certain embodiments disclosed herein include a variety of methods to indicate the resource for the second UL channel. After transmitting the first UL signal, the UE monitors for a DCI format with a UL grant (e.g., DCI format 0_1 or DCI format 0_2) to determine a PUSCH resource to be used for the second UL channel in Mode A.

[0026] In some embodiments, a NW-initiated CSI report and the UEIBR may not be configured simultaneously for a given UE. In these embodiments, a CSI request field can be used to indicate whether the PUSCH scheduled by DCI can be used for the UEIBR. For example, a DCI including a CSI request field of all zeros can indicate that the allocated PUSCH is not used for the UEIBR, when a network-initiated CSI report is not configured. Conversely, a non-zero CSI request field (i.e., at least one bit is set to one) can indicate that the allocated PUSCH is used for the second UL channel in the UEIBR.

[0027] In some embodiments, a NW-initiated CSI report and the UEIBR can be configured simultaneously for a given UE. In these embodiments, a UEIBR indicator field can be introduced into the UL grant. For example, a one-bit UEIBR indicator field can be used. In some embodiments, a combination of the additional UEIBR indicator field and the CSI request field can be used to indicate whether a PUSCH scheduled by a UL grant may be used to carry a NW-initiated CSI report or a UEIBR report. Table 1 shows an example of how the combinations of the CSI request field and a one-bit UEIBR indicator field can be used to indicate the use of a PUSCH scheduled by a UL grant (i.e., whether the PUSCH is for a NW-initiated CSI report, a UEIBR, or neither the NW-initiated CSI report nor a UEIBR) .

[0028] Table 1

[0029] Other embodiments supporting simultaneous configuration of NW-initiated CSI reporting and UEIBR use different control resource sets (CORESETs) to explicitly indicate whether a UL grant is for UE-initiated beam reporting or triggering a NW-initiated CSI report. For example, a one-bit flag information element (IE) can be added to the CORESET configuration to indicate whether the CORESET is used to allocate a PUSCH resource for a second UL channel to be used for the UEIBR. In some embodiments, a UL grant with a non-zero CSI request field and a one-bit flag IE equal to one can indicate that a PUSCH is to be used for the UEIBR.

[0030] FIG. 1 is a graph illustrating an example of CORESET-based DCI monitoring, according to certain embodiments. In this example, three CORESETs (shown as CORESET 102 with index 0, CORESET 104 with index 1, and CORESET 106 with index 2) are configured by RRC signaling for an activated bandwidth part (BWP) . CORESET 106 includes a one-bit flag that is set to ‘1’ . CORESET 102 and CORESET 104 include no flag IE.In Mode A, the UE transmits a first UL channel 108 to request a resource for a second UL channel to carry a UEIBR. When the UE receives a UL grant 110 in CORESET 102, a PUSCH 114 allocated by the UL grant 110 is not used for the UEIBR. The PUSCH 114 allocated by the UL grant 110 is not used for UEIBR because the UL grant 110 was received  in CORESET 102, which includes no flag IE. When the UE receives a UL grant 112 in CORESET 106, an allocated PUSCH 116 can be used for the UEIBR. The PUSCH 116 allocated by the UL grant 112 can be used for the UEIBR because CORESET 106 includes the one-bit flag IE set to ‘1’ . It should be noted that, in the illustrated example, the UL grant 112 includes a non-zero CSI request field if PUSCH 116 allocated by UL grant 112 is to be used for UEIBR. Otherwise, the PUSCH 116 is not used for UEIBR.

[0031] Whereas some embodiments use multiple CORESETs to support simultaneous configuration of NW-initiated CSI reporting and the UEIBR, other embodiments use a search space set within a CORESET. A dedicated search space set may be provided by higher layers (e.g., RRC signaling) . In addition, a dedicated search space set can be divided into a search space for NW-initiated beam reporting and a search space for the UEIBR. A UE may monitor the dedicated search space for a UL grant that can provide a second UL channel in which the UEIBR can be transmitted.

[0032] In certain embodiments using a dedicated search space set for monitoring the UL grant, to minimize power consumption, a UE starts monitoring the dedicated search space that is configured by RRC signaling only after an event trigger and the corresponding first UL channel is transmitted. The event trigger may include, for example, a quality of at least one new beam, such as L1-RSRP, becoming a threshold amount better than the quality of a current beam. The UE stops monitoring the dedicated search space upon receiving a UL grant with a non-zero CSI request field in the search space. The UL grant with the non-zero CSI request field detected in the dedicated search space indicates the PUSCH resource to use for the second channel.

[0033] FIG. 2 is a graph illustrating an example for monitoring a dedicated search space 202, according to certain embodiments. In this example, the dedicated search space 202 is one of a plurality of search spaces 204. The dedicated search space 202 is configured for monitoring uplink grants 206. However, the UE only starts monitoring the dedicated search space 202 in a monitoring window 208 after the first UL transmission 210 requesting a PUSCH resource to use for a second UL channel. In this example, the UE detects UL grant 212, UL grant 214, and UL grant 216 while monitoring the dedicated search space 202 during the monitoring window 208. UL grant 212 and UL grant 214 may not have a non-zero CSI request field and are thus not used for the UEIBR. UL grant 216, however, includes a non-zero CSI request field, indicating that the PUSCH resource allocated by the UL grant 216 can be used as the second UL channel for the UEIBR. After the UE detects that the UL grant 216 is for the second UL channel, the UE stops monitoring the dedicated search space 202.

[0034] In some embodiments supporting simultaneous configuration for NW-initiated beam reporting and UEIBR, RRC signaling is used to select a codepoint of a CSI request field in a UL grant for the UEIBR. In one such embodiment (Option A in Table 2) , a dedicated codepoint of the CSI request field is configured by RRC signaling and used for UEIBR only. In another embodiment (Option B in Table 2) , the RRC-selected codepoint is allowed to trigger both NW-initiated CSI reporting and UE-initiated beam reporting. In some embodiments, a mapping order of NW-initiated and UE-initiated beam report triggered by a single CSI request may be predefined (e.g., in a 3GPP specification) . For example, a predetermined mapping order may specify first mapping the NW-Initiated beam reporting and second mapping the UEIBR report, or vice versa.

[0035] Table 2 depicts examples for Option A and Option B. In the example shown in Table 2, a 2-bit CSI-request field with four codepoint values is used in the UL grant. With Option A, RRC signaling configures codepoint ‘11’ of the CSI request field. The UE transmits UEIBR only on the second UL channel when detecting an RRC-configured codepoint of ‘11’ . With Option B, a CSI request with a codepoint of ‘11’ is associated with two beam reporting (i.e., one is a NW-initiated beam report and the other is a UEIBR) . When codepoint ‘11’ is detected in a UL grant, both NW-initiated and UEIBR reports are included in the PUSCH scheduled by the UL grant.

[0036] Table 2

[0037] In other embodiments supporting simultaneous configuration for NW-initiated beam reporting and UEIBR, a dedicated radio network temporary identifier (RNTI) associated with the UEIBR (e.g., UEIBR-C-RNTI) is predetermined or provided by RRC signaling. When the UE receives a DCI with cyclic redundancy check (CRC) bits scrambled with UEIBR-C-RNTI and a non-zero CSI request, the UEIBR is transmitted on the PUSCH scheduled by the DCI.

[0038] Mechanism for First Channel Retransmission in Mode-A

[0039] Certain embodiments disclosed herein enable retransmission of the first UL channel in Mode A. In one embodiment, for Mode A, a timer value for a beam report timer (BeamReportTimer) and a transmission maximum value (TransMax) parameter are configured by RRC signaling. For example, RRC signaling may configure the timer value for the BeamReportTimer for the UE-initiated beam report as part of Event-2 configuration. The timer value for the BeamReportTimer may be defined either in milliseconds (ms) or in a unit of slots. The TransMax parameter indicates a maximum number of first UL channel transmissions when Event-2 is triggered and Mode A is configured. The BeamReportTimer and the TransMax parameter may be used with a first channel transmission counter in a procedure for the retransmission of the first UL channel. The BeamReportTimer and the TransMax parameter may be configured on a per event configuration (i.e., different events have different configurations) or may be configured to share a configuration for all events.

[0040] In one embodiment, a procedure for retransmission of the first UL channel in Mode A includes: after Event-2 is triggered and the UE transmits the first UL channel for Mode-A, the BeamReportTimer is (re) started; while the BeamReportTimer is running, the UE monitors a DCI format used to schedule the second UL channel; and if the DCI format that schedules second UL channel in Mode A is detected, the UE transmits the UEIBR on the second UL channel scheduled by DCI format and stops the BeamReportTimer. If, however, the BeamReportTimer expires and the DCI format has not been received, the UE considers that the first UL channel is not successful. The UE then increments the first channel transmission counter by ‘1’ . If the first channel transmission counter ≤ TransMax, the UE retransmits the first UL channel using the earliest transmission occasion and again restarts the BeamReportTimer and monitors for the DCI format used to schedule the second UL channel. If, however, the first channel transmission counter > TransMax (i.e., is equal to TransMax+1) , the UE considers the UE-initiated beam report procedure unsuccessfully completed.

[0041] In some embodiments, a power ramping operation can be applied for each retransmission of the first PUCCH channel. For a retransmisison attempt ‘k’ (where k ≥ 1) a power-ramping parameter ΔPRamp, i is used and transmission power of the ith retransmission on the first channel can be calculated as where represents the transmission power computed based on, for example, 3GPP Rel-18.

[0042] FIG. 3 illustrates examples of first channel retransmission, according to certain embodiments. In the illustrated examples, the maximum number of retransmissions is TransMax = 3. In a first example 302, after an initial transmission 306 of the first UL channel, the UE omits further transmissions due to the timer running for a BeamReportTimer length 308, during which time the UE monitors for the DCI format. The UE retransmits the first UL channel in a first retransmission 310, a second retransmission 312, and a third retransmission 314, with each retransmisison occurring after the BeamReportTimer expires (at which times the first channel transmission counter is incremented) . However, no DCI format is detected after the third retransmission 314, causing the UE to consider the UE-initiated beam report procedure unsuccessfully completed.

[0043] In a second example 304, a DCI format 316 is detected after the second retransmission 312 of the first UL channel. Consequently, the UE considers that the UE-initiated beam report procedure is successfully completed (and the UE does not send a third retransmission of the first UL channel, as in the first example 302) .

[0044] FIG. 2 also show the power ramping with step size (e.g., ΔPRamp, i discussed above) being applied during each retransmission to increase the detection reliability of the first UL channel.

[0045] Transmission Occasion Validation for the First UL Channel

[0046] In some embodiments, a transmission occasion of the first UL channel is considered to be valid, including for both initial transmission and retransmission operations, on condition that: the transmission occasion does not partially or fully overlap with the set of symbols of the slot that is indicated as ‘downlink’ by higher layers signal (e.g., tdd-UL-DL-ConfigurationCommon or tdd-UL-DL-ConfigurationDedicated or DCI format 2_0) ; the transmission occasion does not overlap with a measurement gap; and the UE does not detect a DCI format indicating to the UE to receive CSI-RS or PDSCH in a subset of symbols from a second set of the symbols that are configured by the higher layers to transmit the first UL channel.

[0047] FIG. 4 is a flowchart illustrating a method 400 for a UE to transmit UEIBR to a base station in a wireless network, according to certain embodiments. In block 402, in response to an event trigger, the method 400 includes transmitting a request to a base station in a first UL channel. The request is for a resource of a second UL channel allocated for the UEIBR. In block 404, method 400 includes starting a beam report timer upon transmitting the request. In block 406, while the beam report timer is running, the method 400 includes monitoring DCI for an indication of the resource for the second UL channel. In block 408, when the beam report timer expires before detects the indication, the method 400 includes retransmitting the request in the first UL channel and restarting the beam report timer. In block 410, in response to detecting the indication when the beam report timer is running, the method 400 includes transmitting the UEIBR to the base station using the resource indicated for the second UL channel.

[0079] FIG. 6 illustrates an example architecture of a wireless communication system 600, according to embodiments disclosed herein. The following description is provided for an example wireless communication system 600 that operates in conjunction with the LTE system standards and / or 5G or NR system standards as provided by 3GPP technical specifications.

[0080] As shown by FIG. 6, the wireless communication system 600 includes UE 602 and UE 604 (although any number of UEs may be used) . In this example, the UE 602 and the UE 604 are illustrated as smartphones (e.g., handheld touchscreen mobile computing devices connectable to one or more cellular networks) , but may also comprise any mobile or non-mobile computing device configured for wireless communication.

[0081] The UE 602 and UE 604 may be configured to communicatively couple with a RAN 606. In embodiments, the RAN 606 may be NG-RAN, E-UTRAN, etc. The UE 602 and UE 604 utilize connections (or channels) (shown as connection 608 and connection 610, respectively) with the RAN 606, each of which comprises a physical communications interface. The RAN 606 can include one or more base stations (such as base station 612 and base station 614) that enable the connection 608 and connection 610.

[0082] In this example, the connection 608 and connection 610 are air interfaces to enable such communicative coupling, and may be consistent with RAT (s) used by the RAN 606, such as, for example, an LTE and / or NR.

[0083] In some embodiments, the UE 602 and UE 604 may also directly exchange communication data via a sidelink interface 616. The UE 604 is shown to be configured to access an access point (shown as AP 618) via connection 620. By way of example, the connection 620 can comprise a local wireless connection, such as a connection consistent with any IEEE 802.11 protocol, wherein the AP 618 may comprise a router. In this example, the AP 618 may be connected to another network (for example, the Internet) without going through a CN 624.

[0084] In embodiments, the UE 602 and UE 604 can be configured to communicate using orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) communication signals with each other or with the base station 612 and / or the base station 614 over a multicarrier communication channel in accordance with various communication techniques, such as, but not limited to, an orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) communication technique (e.g.,  for downlink communications) or a single carrier frequency division multiple access (SC-FDMA) communication technique (e.g., for uplink and ProSe or sidelink communications) , although the scope of the embodiments is not limited in this respect. The OFDM signals can comprise a plurality of orthogonal subcarriers.

[0085] In some embodiments, all or parts of the base station 612 or base station 614 may be implemented as one or more software entities running on server computers as part of a virtual network. In addition, or in other embodiments, the base station 612 or base station 614 may be configured to communicate with one another via interface 622. In embodiments where the wireless communication system 600 is an LTE system (e.g., when the CN 624 is an EPC) , the interface 622 may be an X2 interface. The X2 interface may be defined between two or more base stations (e.g., two or more eNBs and the like) that connect to an EPC, and / or between two eNBs connecting to the EPC. In embodiments where the wireless communication system 600 is an NR system (e.g., when CN 624 is a 5GC) , the interface 622 may be an Xn interface. The Xn interface is defined between two or more base stations (e.g., two or more gNBs and the like) that connect to 5GC, between a base station 612 (e.g., a gNB) connecting to 5GC and an eNB, and / or between two eNBs connecting to 5GC (e.g., CN 624) .
