[0007] Light fixtures can vary in dimension from a one or two feet to eight feet or more, for example, in length. For example, a light fixture that has a specific length may be selected for installation in a particular space based on, for example, the dimensions of the installation space. In some cases, longer and / or wider light fixtures may pose challenges related to packaging, storage, and / or installation. For example, packaging a relatively long light fixture may be more challenging than packaging a relatively shorter light fixture. As another example, carrying or lifting a relatively long light fixture, for example, during transportation, storage, and / or installation, may pose challenges as compared to relatively shorter light fixtures. Thus, a solution that enables shortening the length of a light fixture until the light fixture needs to have a full length may be desirable.

[0009] The present disclosure relates generally to lighting solutions, and in particular to retractable lighting devices. In an example embodiment, a retractable lighting device includes a first lighting device segment that includes a first housing segment. The retractable lighting device further includes a second lighting device segment that includes a second housing segment. The retractable lighting device also includes a first attachment system and a second attachment system. The first housing segment and the second housing segment are slidably attached to each other by the first attachment system and the second attachment system, where the retractable lighting device is extendable to a fully extended position such that the first lighting device segment and the second lighting device segment are linearly aligned with each other. FIGS. 1A-1C illustrate different views of a retractable lighting device 100 in a retracted position according to an example embodiment. For example, the retractable lighting device 100 may be a light fixture such as, for example, a troffer or a linear light fixture. The retractable lighting device 100 may be a recessed light fixture, a suspended light fixture, or another type of lighting device. In some example embodiments, the retractable lighting device 100 includes lighting device segments 102, 104. In the retractable position of the retractable lighting device 100 shown in FIGS. 1A-1C, the lighting device segment 104 is overlaid on the lighting device segment 102. The adjustable lighting device 100 is extendable to a fully extended position such that the lighting device segment 102 and the lighting device segment 104 are linearly aligned with each other.

A retractable lighting device (100, 1100, 1600), comprising: a first lighting device segment (102, 1102) comprising a first housing segment (112, 1106); a second lighting device segment (104, 1104) comprising a second housing segment (114, 1108); a first attachment system (106, 1112); and a second attachment system (108, 1154), wherein the first housing segment and the second housing segment are slidably attached to each other by the first attachment system and the second attachment system, wherein the retractable lighting device is extendable to a fully extended position such that the first lighting device segment and the second lighting device segment are linearly aligned with each other and wherein the retractable lighting device is retractable to a retracted position such that the second lighting device segment is overlaid on the first lighting device segment; wherein the first attachment system (106, 1112) comprises a first bracket (302, 1144) attached to the first housing segment (112, 1106) and to the second housing segment (114, 1108) and is rotatably attached to the first housing segment (112) by a first fastener (504) and to the second housing segment (114) by a second fastener (506) that extends through a first sliding slot (128) of the second housing segment such that the second housing segment is slidable relative to the second fastener (506).
2. The retractable lighting device of Claim 1, wherein the second attachment system (108, 1154) comprises a second bracket (402, 1170) attached to the first housing segment (112, 1106) and to the second housing segment (114, 1108).

The retractable lighting device of Claim 2, wherein the second bracket (402) is rotatably attached to the first housing segment (112) by a third fastener (604) and wherein the second bracket is attached to the second housing segment by a fourth fastener (606) that extends through a second sliding slot (134) of the second housing segment such that the second housing segment is slidable relative to the fourth fastener (606).2024PF80052274. The retractable lighting device of Claim 2, wherein the first bracket and the second bracket are attached to the first housing segment and to the second housing segment on opposite sides of the retractable lighting device from each other.
5. The retractable lighting device of Claim 2, wherein the second lighting device segment (104) is smaller in size than the first lighting device segment (102).
6. The retractable lighting device of Claim 5, wherein the first lighting device segment and the second lighting device segment are electrically connectable such that the first lighting device segment and the second lighting device segment are powered by a power supply component (148).

The retractable lighting device of Claim 6, further comprising an electronics housing (120) that is sized to contain the power supply equipment is attached to the first housing segment, wherein the electronics housing is positioned at a back side of the first housing segment and wherein the second lighting device segment is overlaid on the first lighting device segment at the back side of the first housing segment when the retractable lighting device is in the retracted position.

The retractable lighting device of Claim 2, further comprising: a third attachment system (1110); and a fourth attachment system (1152), wherein the first housing segment (1106) and the second housing segment (1108) are slidably attached to each other further by the third attachment system and the fourth attachment system.

The retractable lighting device of Claim 8, wherein the third attachment system (1110) comprises a third bracket (1136) attached to the first housing segment (1106) and to the second housing segment (1108) and wherein the fourth attachment system (1152) comprises a fourth bracket (1156) attached to the first housing segment (1106) and to the second housing segment (1108).
10. The retractable lighting device of Claim 9, wherein the third bracket (1136) is rotatably attached to the second housing segment (1108) by a first fastener (1140), wherein2024PF8005228 the third bracket (1136) is attached to the first housing segment (1106) by a second fastener (1138) that extends through a first sliding slot (1118) of the first housing segment (1106), wherein the fourth bracket (1156) is rotatably attached to the second housing segment (1108) by a third fastener (1160), and wherein the fourth bracket is attached to the first housing segment by a fourth fastener (1158) that extends through a second sliding slot (1174) of the first housing segment (1106).
11. The retractable lighting device of Claim 1, wherein the first lighting device segment (102) comprises a first edge-lit panel (516) and a first light source (518) and wherein the second lighting device segment (104) comprises a second edge-lit panel (140) and a second light source (202).
12. The retractable lighting device of Claim 1, further comprising a flexible lens (110) that is foldable such that a portion of the flexible lens is overlaid on the second lighting device segment (104) when the retractable lighting device is in the retracted position.
13. The retractable lighting device of Claim 1, wherein the retractable lighting device is a troffer light fixture or a linear light fixture.
14. The retractable lighting device of Claim 1, further comprising: a third lighting device segment (1606) having a third housing segment (1612); a third attachment system (1632); and a third attachment system (1634), wherein the second housing segment and the third housing segment are slidably attached to each other by the third attachment system (1632) and by the fourth attachment system (1634), wherein the retractable lighting device is extendable to the fully extended position such that the first lighting device segment, the second lighting device segment, and the third lighting device segment are linearly aligned with each other and wherein the adjustable lighting device is retractable to the retracted position such that the third lighting device segment is overlaid on the second lighting device segment.
