[0002] Magnetic toys, such as magnetic tile toys, are known for their ability to connect and form various structures through embedded magnets, are popular among children for their educational and entertainment value. However, there is an increasing demand for more interactive features that enhance the play experience, such through the use of electronic components. Introducing these features presents several challenges, particularly in terms of integrating electronic components within the compact confines of the toy housing. Accordingly, there is a need in the art for an improved magnetic toy integrating electronic components.SUMMARY
[0003] The present disclosure is generally directed to a magnetic toy. The magnetic toy includes a housing including a first major wall, a second major wall spaced from the first major wall, and a plurality of side walls each extending between the first major wall and the second major wall to define a housing interior. The magnetic toy also includes a plurality of magnets supported relative to the housing for connecting the magnetic toy to other magnetic or ferromagnetic items. The magnetic toy also includes a light emitter supported relative to the housing and configured to emit light and a sound emitter supported relative to housing and configured to emit sound. [0016] With reference to the Figures, wherein like numerals indicate like parts throughout the several views, a magnetic toy 100 according to the present disclosure is generally shown.
[0017] The magnetic toy 100 includes a housing 104 defining a housing interior 108. The housing 104 includes opposing major walls 112 (i.e., a first major wall 112A and a second major wall 112B spaced from the first major wall 112A) with a plurality of side walls 116 extending between the opposing major walls 112. Cumulatively, the opposing major walls 112 and the plurality of side walls 116 define the housing interior 108. The opposing major walls 112 may define a generally polygonal shape (e.g., triangles, rectangles, parallelograms, pentagons, hexagons, etc.), but other shapes are contemplated. The first major wall 112A and the second major wall 112B may have substantially the same shape and size such that the plurality of side walls 116 extend substantially orthogonally between the perimeter edges of the first major wall 112A and the second major wall 112B. In some examples, the height of the plurality of side walls 116 is substantially less than the dimensions (e.g., the length and width) of the opposing major walls 112.
[0018] The housing 104 may be comprised of a polymeric or other hard plastic / resin material, but other materials are contemplated. At least a portion of the housing 104 may be transparent or translucent to allow light generated by light emitter(s) (described below) to transmit from inside the housing interior 108 to outside of the housing 104. The housing 104 may be formed via injection molding, but other processes of forming the housing 104 are contemplated. The housing 104 may also include additional features to improve the structural integrity of the housing 104 such as ribs, gussets, braces, fillets, chamfers, the like, or any combination thereof.

Accordingly, the magnetic toy 100 is configured to be magnetically connected to other magnetic or ferromagnetic items (e.g., another magnetic toy) by virtue of the magnetic force of at least one of the plurality of magnets 120. The configuration and arrangement of the plurality of magnets 120 is not particularly limited for the purposes of this disclosure. The plurality of magnets 120 may be comprised of ferrite / ceramic, rare earth materials / neodymium, the like, or any combination thereof. For example, in some cases, one or more magnets 120 of the plurality of magnets 120 may be comprised of ferrite / ceramic, while another one or more magnets 120 of the plurality of magnets 120 are comprised of rare earth materials / neodymium. The direction of the polarity of the plurality of magnets 120 is also not necessarily limited for the purposes of this disclosure and may be implemented to achieve desired attractive / repelling behavior.
[0021] The plurality of magnets 120 may be supported within the housing interior 108 of the housing 104, but other configurations where the plurality of magnets 120 are at least partially exposed to ambient are contemplated. Typically, the plurality of magnets 120 includes at least one magnet 120 disposed adjacent to each of the plurality of side walls 116, but other configurations (i.e., greater or fewer magnets 120) are contemplated. In some examples, the plurality of magnet pockets 124 may receive respective magnet(s) 120 such that the magnet(s) 120 are constrained from translation and rotation within their respective magnet pocket 124. In other examples, such as shown in Figure 2, one or more the plurality of magnet pockets 124 may receive the magnet(s) 120 such that the magnet(s) 120 are configured to rotate within their respective magnet pocket 124 (e.g., so that the magnet can rotate to orient an attractive polarity outward to magnetically connect the magnetic toy 100 to other magnetic or ferromagnetic items, such as another magnetic toy). Other configurations and arrangements of the plurality of magnets 120 enabling the magnetic toy 100 to be magnetically connected to other magnetic or ferromagnetic items (e.g., another magnetic toy) are contemplated.
[0022] The magnetic toy 100 also includes a light emitter 128. Of course, it should be appreciated that the magnetic toy 100 may include a plurality of light emitter 128. The light emitter(s) 128 may be implemented as light emitting diodes (LED) or the like. In some examples, the light emitter(s) 128 may emit a fixed color (e.g., red) or selectively emit assorted colors (e.g., adjustable RGB LEDs). In configurations where the magnetic toy 100 includes a plurality of light emitters 128, the light emitters 128 may be configured to respectively emit a different color (e.g., one light emitter 128 configured to emit red light and another light emitter 128 configured to emit blue light). As mentioned above, in configurations where at least a portion of the housing 104 is transparent or translucent, the light emitter(s) 128 may be arranged within the housing interior 108 of the housing 104 and configured to emit light through the5Attorney Docket No. 122746.00339transparent or translucent portion of the housing 104. In other configurations, the light emitter(s) 128 may be arranged on or embedded in one of the walls of the housing 104.
[0023] The magnetic toy 100 also includes a sound emitter 132. Of course, it should be appreciated that the magnetic toy 100 may include a plurality of sound emitters 132. The sound emitter(s) 132 may be implemented as electrically powered / actuated speakers, buzzers, sirens, bells, the like, or any combination thereof. As best shown in Figure 1 A, in some examples, the sound emitter(s) 132 may be supported within the housing interior 108 of the housing 104. In these configurations, the housing 104 may define void(s) 134 configured to permit the sound generated by the sound emitter(s) 132 to escape the housing 104. In other configurations, the sound emitter(s) 132 may be arranged on or embedded in one of the walls of the housing 104.
[0024] The magnetic toy 100 may also include or be configured to receive power from a power source, such as a battery. For example, the magnetic toy 100 may include a battery receptacle 136 supported within the housing interior 108 and configured to receive / house a battery (not shown) for supplying power to the light emitter(s) 128 and the sound emitter(s) 132. The battery receptacle 136 may include a plurality of terminals 138 (e.g., a positive terminal and a negative terminal) each configured to contact the battery to electrically couple the light emitter(s) 128 and the sound emitter(s) 132 to the battery (e.g., via a circuit assembly, described in further detail below). In some examples, the battery may be permanently disposed in the battery receptacle 136 and be rechargeable (e.g., via USB cable or wireless charging). In other examples, such as best shown in Figures 3B, 4B, and 5B, the battery receptacle 136 may be configured to releasably receive the battery. For example, the battery receptacle 136 may be configured to releasably receive batteries having a button form-factor (as illustrated in the Figures), a cylindrical form-factor, etc. In configurations where the battery is removable / replaceable, the housing 104 may define a battery access opening 140 (best shown in Figure 3B) sized to permit the battery to be inserted / removed from the battery receptacle6Attorney Docket No. 122746.00339136. Here, the housing 104 may also include a battery receptacle cover 144 releasably coupled to the housing 104 for covering the battery access opening 140. The battery receptacle cover 144 may be releasably coupled to the housing 104 via interlocking features, screws, clips, the like, or any combination thereof.
[0025] A variety of configurations of the battery receptacle 136 and the plurality of terminals 138 for releasably receiving one or more batteries are contemplated. In the examples illustrated in FIGS. 3B, 4B, and 5B, the battery receptacle 136 is configured to releasably receive one battery having a button form-factor. Here, the plurality of terminals 138 includes a first terminal 139-1 implemented as a leaf spring that is biased away from the housing 104 and arranged to contact a negative terminal of the button form-factor battery (typically a circular face of the button form-factor battery), and a second terminal 139-2 implemented as a pair of resilient arms that are biased radially inward and arranged to contact a positive terminal of the button form-factor battery (typically a cylindrical face of the button form-factor battery). In other examples, referring to Figures 6 and 7, the battery receptacle 136 may be configured to releasably receive multiple batteries having a button form-factor. Stated differently, the battery receptacle 136 may define a plurality of sub-receptacles 137 each configured to receive a respective battery having a button form- factor. In the examples of Figures 6 and 7, the battery receptacle 1 6 defines a first sub-receptacle 137-1 configured to receive a first battery having a button form- factor and a second sub-receptacle 137-2 configured to receive a second battery having a button form-factor. In these examples, each of the first sub-receptacle 137-1 and the second sub-receptacle 137-2 include a plurality of terminals 138 configured to contact the battery. Referring to Figure 6, in one example, the first terminal 137-1 is implemented as a helical spring that is biased away from the housing 104 and arranged to contact a negative terminal of the button form- factor battery. In the example of Figure 7, the first terminal 137-1 is implemented as a resilient arm comprised of wire that is biased away from the housing 1047Attorney Docket No. 122746.00339and arranged to contact a negative terminal of the button form-factor battery. In the examples of both Figures 6 and 7, the second terminal 137-2 is implemented as a pair of resilient arms comprised of wire that are biased radially inward and arranged to contact a positive terminal of the button form-factor battery. It should be appreciated that the implementations of the plurality of terminals 138 illustrated herein are illustrative and other configurations are contemplated.
[0026] Referring to Figures 2-5B, the magnetic toy 100 may include a circuit assembly 148 configured to direct power from a power source (e.g., a battery) to the light emitter(s) 128 and / or the sound emitter(s) 132 to operate the light emitter(s) 128 and / or the sound emitter(s) 132. The circuit assembly 148 may include a printed circuit board (PCB) 152. The PCB 152 may be sized to be disposed within the housing interior 108 and supported by the housing 104 within the housing interior 108. For example, as best shown in Figure 2, the housing 104 may include a plurality of standoffs 154 for supporting the PCB 152 within the housing interior 108 of the housing 104.
[0027] The PCB 152 includes a first surface 152A and a second surface 152B opposite the first surface 152A. As best shown in Figures 2 and 4A-5B, the first surface 152A of the PCB 152 may support the light emitter(s) 128 and / or the sound emitter(s) 132, and the second surface 152B may support the battery receptacle 136. The PCB 152 may also include a plurality of conductive traces 156 for electrically connecting the terminals 138 of the battery receptacle 136 to the light emitter(s) 128 and the sound emitter(s) 132 such that the battery energizes the light emitter(s) 128 and the sound emitter(s) 132.
[0028] A variety of configurations for the conductive traces 156 for connecting the terminals of the battery receptacle 136 to the light emitter(s) 128 and the sound emitter(s) 132 are contemplated. Notably, where the first surface 152 A of the PCB 152 supports the light emitter(s) 128 and the sound emitter(s) 132 and the second surface 152B support, the battery receptacle 136, the conductive trace(s) 156 may be configured to extend between the first surface 152 A and the second surface 152B through vias 158 defined by the PCB 152.
[0029] With continued reference to Figures 4A-5B, the circuit assembly 148 may also include a switch 160 arranged for user engagement for interrupting the electrical coupling between the battery receptacle 136 and the light emitter(s) 128 and the sound emitter(s) 132. The switch 160 may be operable between a coupled state and a decoupled state in response to user engagement. In the coupled state, the switch 160 is configured to electrically couple the terminals 138 of the battery receptacle 136 to the light emitter(s) 128 and the sound emitter(s) 132 such that the battery energizes the light emitter(s) 128 and the sound emitter(s) 1 2. In the decoupled state, the switch 160 is configured to interrupt electrical coupling of the terminals 138 of the battery receptacle 136 to the light emitter(s) 128 and the sound emitter(s) 132.
[0030] In the illustrated example, the switch 160 is interposed between the battery receptacle 136 and the first light emitter 128A the interrupt electrical coupling therebetween. The switch 160 may be implemented as a toggle button (as shown in the Figures), a rocker switch, or the like. The switch 160 may be supported within the housing interior 108 (e.g. disposed on the first surface 152A of the PCB 152) and may extend through a switch void 164 in the housing 104 such that the switch 160 is arranged for user engagement. The switch cover 168 may be comprised of an elastomeric material, but other configurations are contemplated. In one example, as opposed to the PCB 152 including a plurality of conductive traces 156 shown throughout the Figures, the terminals 138 of the battery receptacle 136 and the light emitter / s) 128 and the sound emitter(s) 132 may be interconnected with wires. The circuit assembly 148 may additionally or alternatively include a microcontroller including a processor and memory storing instructions or other logic such that the microprocessor is configured to operate the circuit assembly 148 to energize the light emitter(s) 128 and / or the sound emitter(s) 132 in response to user engagement with a user input device (such as a button, switch, etc.). Implementation of a microcontroller to operate the light emitter(s) 128 and / or the sound emitter(s) 132 may provide for more sophisticated control capabilities, such as independent operation of the light emitter(s) 128 and sound emitter(s) 132, the ability to change the color, brightness, etc. of the light emitted by the light emitter(s) 128, the ability to operate the light emitter(s) 128 and / or the sound emitter(s) 132 in a programed sequence or routine (e.g., flashing the light emitter(s) 128 in a programmed sequence optionally in conjunction with a sound routine), adjust the volume of the sound emitted by the sound emitter(s) 132, emit a variety of stored sounds via the sound emitter(s) 132, etc.

CLAIMSWhat is claimed is:
1. A magnetic toy, comprising: a housing including a first major wall, a second major wall spaced from the first major wall, and a plurality of side walls each extending between the first major wall and the second major wall to define a housing interior; a plurality of magnets supported relative to the housing for connecting the magnetic toy to other magnetic or ferromagnetic items; a light emitter supported relative to the housing and configured to emit light; a sound emitter supported relative to housing and configured to emit sound; and a circuit assembly supported within the housing interior and configured to direct power from a power source to at least one of the light emitter and the sound emitter to operate the light emitter and the sound emitter.
2. The magnetic toy of claim 1, wherein the light emitter is supported within the housing interior, and wherein at least a portion of the housing is at least partially transparent to allow light emitted by the light emitter to transmit from inside the housing interior to outside of the housing.
3. The magnetic toy of claim 1, wherein the sound emitter is supported arranged within the housing interior, and wherein the housing defines a void configured to permit the sound generated by the sound emitter to escape the housing.
4. The magnetic toy of claim 1 , further comprising a battery receptacle supported within the housing interior and configured to receive a battery.15Attorney Docket No. 122746.003395. The magnetic toy of claim 4, wherein battery receptacle is configured to releasably receive the battery, the housing defines a battery access opening sized to permit the battery to be inserted and removed from the battery receptacle, and the housing includes a battery receptacle cover releasably coupled to the housing for covering the battery access opening.

The magnetic toy of claim 4, wherein the battery receptacle includes a plurality of terminals each configured to contact the battery to electrically couple the light emitter and the sound emitter to the battery via the circuit assembly, and wherein the plurality of terminals includes a first terminal arranged to contact a negative terminal of the battery and a second terminal arranged to contact a positive terminal of the battery.
7. The magnetic toy of claim 6, wherein the battery receptacle is configured to receive a battery having a button form-factor.
8. The magnetic toy of claim 7, wherein the first terminal is biased away from the housing and arranged to contact a negative terminal on a circular face of the battery having a button formfactor.
9. The magnetic toy of claim 7, wherein the second terminal biased radially inward and arranged to contact a positive terminal on a cylindrical face of the battery having a button formfactor.
10. The magnetic toy of claim 1, wherein the circuit assembly includes a printed circuit board(PCB) supported within the housing interior.16Attorney Docket No. 122746.0033911. The magnetic toy of claim 10, wherein the PCB includes a first surface and a second surface opposite the first surface, and wherein the first surface supports at least one of the light emitter and the sound emitter, and the second surface supports a battery receptacle configured to receive a battery.
12. The magnetic toy of claim 10, wherein the PCB includes a plurality of conductive traces for electrically connecting the power source to the light emitter and the sound emitter.
13. The magnetic toy of claim 1, wherein the circuit assembly includes a switch operable between a coupled state and a decoupled state to control electrical coupling between the power source and the light emitter and the sound emitter.
14. The magnetic toy of claim 13, wherein the switch is supported within the housing interior and extends through a void in the housing for user engagement, and the magnetic toy further comprises a switch cover disposed above the switch to prevent debris from entering the housing interior.
15. The magnetic toy of claim 1 , wherein the circuit assembly includes a timer chip configured to interrupt electrical coupling between the power source and the light emitter and the sound emitter after a predetermined period of time.

The magnetic toy of claim 1, wherein the circuit assembly includes a microcontroller configured to operate the circuit assembly to energize at least one of the light emitter and the sound emitter in response to user engagement with a user input device.17Attorney Docket No. 122746.0033917. The magnetic toy of claim 1, wherein the housing defines a plurality of magnet pockets each configured to receive and support one or more magnets of the plurality of magnets.
18. The magnetic toy of claim 17, wherein the plurality of side walls each at least partially delimit one or more of the plurality of magnet pockets.
19. The magnetic toy of claim 17, wherein at least one of the plurality of magnets is configured to rotate within their respective magnet pocket to orient an attractive polarity outward.
