[0003] A HOME CARE CLEANING COMPOSITION FOR DELIVERING BENEFITS TO SKIN

[0004] Field of the Invention

[0005] 5 The present invention relates to a composition for delivering skin health. Particularly, the present invention relates to a laundry treatment composition that delivers the actives included therein to the fabric being laundered so that the person wearing the fabrics after laundering gets the benefits on to the skin which is in contact with laundered fabric. The actives may also be delivered through a cleaning composition like a laundry hand wash composition, or a hand dishwash composition such that when the composition is used to clean the desired surface using ones hands, the benefits of the invention are delivered to the skin surface which comes in contact with the composition.

[0006] Background of the Invention

[0007] 15 Washing fabrics, also known as laundering or simply as laundry, makes up one of the main chores that people undertake routinely. Laundering is undertaken primarily to remove noticeable stains which may be oily, particulate or food stains. Clothes are also laundered to remove malodour and give them a fresh look and smell. For this, people have been relying on detergent compositions that are widely available. Typically, a fabric is washed by contacting it with a

[0008] 20 detergent composition either in neat or diluted form, rinsing the fabric one or more times with water; and finally, drying it.

[0009] Many other actives are included in detergent compositions to deliver various other benefits like softness and conditioning benefits, antimicrobial benefits, anti-wrinkling benefits, sun-screening

[0010] 25 benefits etc. Although some attempts have been made to deliver skin care benefits through detergent compositions that are used to wash clothes worn by people, it is still a vastly unexplored area. The present inventors through their extensive experience in biochemistry of skin and the interfacial science of cleaning, conducted extensive experimentation with various actives that could be included into detergent composition to deliver perceptible skin benefits. To their surprise

[0011] 30 they found that two very commonly used polysaccharides pectin and resistant dextrin when included in a detergent composition upregulate two different genes which work in tandem to deliver skin health benefits. They also believe that this technology which uses commonly available and safe polysaccharides for improving skin health is a sustainable technology. P0001010 CPL

[0012] 2

[0013] Since the composition delivers the benefits on to skin through a wash off composition, it was found to be effective whenever the skin comes in contact with a wash liquor containing the composition like in the case of a hand wash laundry composition and a hand dish-wash composition.

[0014] 5

[0015] It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide for a laundry treatment composition that delivers skin care benefits to the person wearing the clothes laundered with the composition.

[0016] Summary of the Invention

[0017] The first aspect of the present invention relates to a home care cleaning composition for delivering benefits to skin comprising

[0018] (i) 0.001 to 10 wt% pectin;

[0019] (ii) 0.001 to 10 wt% resistant dextrin; and

[0020] (iii) a surface treatment active selected from one or both of a surfactant or a fabric softening

[0021] 15 active.

[0022] According to another aspect of the present invention there is provided a method of delivering skin health to a person wearing a laundered fabric wherein the laundry process comprises the steps of (i) contacting the fabric pre-wet with water with a composition of the first aspect; (ii) rinsing the

[0023] 20 fabric with water; and (ii) drying the rinsed fabric.

[0024] Detailed Description of the Invention

[0025] For the avoidance of doubt, any feature of one aspect of the present invention may be utilised in any other aspect of the invention. The word "comprising" is intended to mean "including" but not

[0026] 25 necessarily "consisting of” or "composed of". Thus, the term "comprising" is meant not to be limiting to any subsequently stated elements, but rather to optionally also encompass nonspecified elements of major or minor functional importance. In other words, the listed steps or options need not be exhaustive. Whenever the words "including" or "having" are used, these terms are meant to be equivalent to "comprising" as defined above. It is noted that the examples given in the description below are intended to clarify the invention and are not intended to limit the invention to those examples per se. Except in the examples, or where otherwise explicitly indicated, all numbers in this description indicating amounts of material or conditions of reaction, physical properties of materials and / or use are to be understood as modified by the word "about". Unless specified otherwise, numerical ranges expressed in the format "x to y" are understood to

[0027] 35 include x and y. When for a specific feature multiple preferred ranges are described in the format P0001010 CPL

[0028] 3

[0029] "x to y", it is understood that all ranges combining the different endpoints are also contemplated. Unless specified otherwise, amounts as used herein are expressed in percentage by weight based on total weight of the composition and is abbreviated as “wt%”.

[0030] 5 The composition of the invention delivers improved skin health through use of a home care cleaning composition like a laundry detergent composition or a fabric conditioning composition which are both used to clean clothes and other laundry articles. The laundered clothes after they are dried are used by the consumer. The fabric of the clothes so laundered when in touch with the skin during use by the consumer are seen to deliver the skin health. The skin health is also seen to be delivered to the hands of the person when he or she uses the laundry detergent composition or the fabric conditioning composition to wash the clothes by hand.

[0031] The skin health benefits of the composition of the invention is also delivered to the hands of the person who washes dishes using the hand dish wash composition of the invention.

[0032] The skin health benefits through use of the composition of the invention includes reduced water

[0033] 15 loss though the skin thereby keeping the skin less dry and so better hydrated. Concomitantly the skin is less prone to entry of foreign particles like allergens thus improving the defence mechanism of the skin. The benefits also include a more balanced microbiome on the skin.

[0034] The composition of the invention comprises pectin. Pectin is a structural

[0035] 20 acidic heteropolysaccharide contained in the primary and middle lamella and cell walls of terrestrial plants. Its main component is galacturonic acid, a sugar acid derived from galactose. It is produced commercially as a white to light brown powder, mainly extracted from citrus fruits, and is used in food as a gelling agent, particularly in jams and jellies. It is also used in dessert fillings, medicines, sweets, as a stabiliser in fruit juices and milk drinks, and as a

[0036] 25 source of dietary fibre. Pectin also known as pectic polysaccharides, are rich in galacturonic acid. Several distinct polysaccharides have been identified and characterised within the pectic group. Homogalacturonans are linear chains of a-(1— 4)-linked D-galacturonic acid. Substituted galacturonans are characterised by the presence of saccharide appendant residues (such as D- xylose or D-apiose in the respective cases of xylogalacturonan and apiogalacturonan) branching

[0037] 30 from a backbone of D-galacturonic acid residues. Rhamnogalacturonan pectins (RG-I) contain a backbone of the repeating disaccharide: 4)-a-D-galacturonic acid-(1 ,2)-a-L-rhamnose-(1. From many of the rhamnose residues, sidechains of various neutral sugars branch off. The neutral sugars are mainly D-galactose, L-arabinose and D-xylose, with the types and proportions of neutral sugars varying with the origin of pectin. Another structural type of pectin P0001010 CPL is rhamnogalacturonan II (RG-II), which is a less frequent, complex, highly branched polysaccharide.

[0038] Pectin is preferably derived from one or more of a fruit chosen from pear, apple, guava, plum,

[0039] 5 gooseberry, orange or any other citrus fruit, preferably citrus. It is preferably from apple or citrus fruit. It is preferred that the pectin included in the composition of the invention is in free form i.e. it is not delivered through the shells of microcapsules included in the composition. It is also preferred that the composition of the invention is not delivered through wipes. By wipes is meant a porous water - insoluble substrate into which the composition is impregnated.

[0040] Pectin consists predominantly of a-D galacturonic acid units, but also contains some amount of neutral sugars such as rhamnose, xylose, arabinose, galactose and glucose.

[0041] The percentage of galacturonic acid units is therefore the amount of galacturonic acid groups present relative to the total amount of the pectin. The galacturonic acid content of a sample can

[0042] 15 be determined by methods known in the art, such as for example the Saeman hydrolysis method (Englyst and Cummings (Analyst, 109(7), 937-942 (1984), Filisetti-Cozzi and Carpita (Analytical Biochemistry, 197, 157-162 (1991)).

[0043] Galacturonic acid typically has the following repeat unit structure:

[0044] 20

[0045] It is possible to esterify galacturonic acids on the carboxylic acid group. The percentage of esterified units is called the degree of esterification (DE). The degree of esterification can be determined according to methods known in the art, such as the base titration method (Shultz,

[0046] 25 1965) as proposed by the Food Chemical Codex (FCC (1981). 3rd ed., (1981) National Academy of Science, Washington, DC), quantification of methanol released during de-esterification using gas chromatography (GC) (Walter et al. (1983), Journal of Food Science, 48: 1006-10070), colorimetry (Hou et al. (1999), Botanical Bulletin of Academia Sincia, 40:115-119), high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) (Levigne S., et al. (2002), Food Hydrocolloids 16:

[0047] 30 547-550), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) (Rosenbohm et al. (2003) Carbohydrate Research, 338: 637-649) and capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) (Williams et al. (2003), Journal of Agricultural Food and Chemistry, 51 : 1777-1781). P0001010 CPL

[0048] 5

[0049] A method to separate pectin into fractions with different DE is described, for example, by Strom, et al. (2005), Carbohydrate Polymers, Volume 60, Issue 4, 20 June 2005, Pages 467-473.

[0050] In nature, the carboxylic groups are typically methylated to varying degrees to provide pectin methyl esters. The number fraction of carboxylic acid groups methylated is known as the degree

[0051] 5 of methyl esterification.

[0052] The pectin used in the composition of the present invention preferably has a degree of methyl esterification higher than 50%, more preferably 52.5% or higher, further more preferably 55% or higher, yet more preferably 57.5% or higher and most preferably 60% or higher.

[0053] The pectin used according to the invention preferably has a molecular weight of higher than 50kDa, more preferably higher than 100kDa. Typical upper limits of pectin molecular weights are preferably of the order of 1000kDa, more preferably 800kDa. Thus, the pectin for use in the composition of the invention preferably has a molecular weight of between 50 kDa and 1000kDa.

[0054] 15 The composition comprises pectin to be included at a concentration of 0.001 to 10%, preferably 0.01 to 5%, more preferably 0.1 to 3%, further more preferably 0.1 to 2% by weight of the composition.

[0055] The composition of the invention comprises resistant dextrin. Resistant dextrin is also known by

[0056] 20 some as digestion resistant maltodextrin. It is usually prepared by highly controlled partial hydrolysis of corn, potatoes, barley or wheat preferably from corn starch. It usually contains 3 to 20 D-glucose units that are linked by a(1 -4), a(1 -6), p(1 -4) and p(1 -6) glycosidic bond. It is also reported to contain some 1 ,2 and 1 ,3 glycosidic bond. It usually has the chemical formula C6nH( n+2)O(5n+i) or (CeHioOsjn where ‘n’ represents the number of glucose units linked together.

[0057] 25 It is usually sold as an off-white powder which is odourless. It is soluble in water. A preferred supplier of resistant dextrin is ADM Bio Science & Technology (Tianjin) Co. Ltd., Tianjin, China who sell it under the brand name Fibersol or FibersolR2. Resistant dextrin is included in 0.001 to 10%, preferably 0.01 to 5%, more preferably 0.1 to 3%, further more preferably 0.1 to 2% by weight of the composition.

[0058] 30

[0059] For the sake of clarity, the resistant dextrin referred herein is not what is generally known as maltodextrin (or digestible maltodextrin) which predominantly contains only a(1-4) glycosidic bonds. P0001010 CPL

[0060] 6

[0061] Without wishing to be bound by theory the inventors believe that the pectin and resistant dextrin delivered to the skin via the laundered fabric upregulate certain genes on the skin that work in tandem to deliver better skin health. They believe that these two polysaccharides act on the skin and improve skin health by selectively turning on genes which are involved in skin regeneration,

[0062] 5 maintenance, and desquamation. They work alone or in tandem especially when they turn on different genes. The present inventors have shown that there is benefit in both solo or combination modes. In combination, pectin and resistant dextrin are seen to work in tandem to deliver enhanced benefit. While they can turn on beneficial genes by themselves, the net effect of turning on genes which are upstream and downstream together makes it more powerful. Pectin turns on KLK5 and resistant dextrin in combination with Pectin turns on Involucrin, Loricrin and Filaggrin. KLK5 is a protease and Involucrin is a substrate for the protease. Together this results in enhanced benefit.

[0063] The composition of the invention preferably comprises a hydrotrope. Suitable hydrotropes for

[0064] 15 inclusion in the composition of the invention are one or more of an alkali metal cumene sulphonate, alkali metal xylene sulphonate, polyethylene glycol (PEG), mono propylene glycol (MPG), and dipropylene glycol (DPG). The preferred alkali metal cumene sulphonate is sodium cumene sulphone (SOS). The preferred alkali metal xylene sulphonate is sodium xylene sulphonate (SXS). The most preferred hydrotrope for use in the present invention is one or both

[0065] 20 of SOS and MPG. The composition preferably comprises 0.05% to 5 wt%, more preferably 0.1 to 4 wt% hydrotrope.

[0066] It is especially preferred that the composition of the invention includes a preservative.

[0067] 25 It is further preferred that the composition of the invention includes a fragrance. [0089] 35 P0001010 CPL

[0090] 9

[0091] Liquid laundry detergent compositions also generally comprise agents like soil release polymers, hydrotropes, co-surfactants, builders, polymeric thickeners, and shading dyes in addition to the above described ingredients. [0240] 22

[0241] Volunteers had one hand immersed into in a 3 gram per liter (gpl) solution of composition of Example B while the other hand was immersed in a 3 gpl solution of composition of Example 6. The composition of Examples B and 6 were randomised amongst 24 volunteers. The hands were

[0242] 5 dipped in to the wash liquor for 10 minutes on day 1 , 2 and 3. Hydration and TEWL (trans epidermal water loss) assessments were done on day 1 , 2 and 3 before and after hand dipping.

[0243] Hydration was measured using a Corneometer, which works based on the principle of electrical conductance. Output is presented in the unit of micro-Siemens (pS). Electrical conductance of

[0244] 10 the stratum corneum is directly proportional to the skin’s hydration level. Corneometry can be used to demonstrate the efficacy of products applied to the skin which are intended to improve hydration

[0245] Skin TEWL measurement was done using a Tewameter probe which measures the density gradient of the water evaporation from the skin indirectly by two pairs of sensors (temperature and relative humidity).

[0246] The difference before and after hand immersion was plotted as the percentage change in hydration and TEWL. The data is presented in Table -7 as an average % change for 24

[0247] 20 volunteers.

[0248] Table -7: P0001010 CPL

[0249] 23

[0250] The data in the Table - 7 above indicates that composition as per the invention (Example -6) consistently delivers lower decrease in hydration over the three days as compared to a standard detergent powder (Example - B). This benefit is further corroborated by TEWL measurements 5 where the composition as per the invention (Example - 6) deliver lower amount of water loss as compared to Example - B.
