METHOD FOR IMPROVING SUSTAINABILITY OF DEVICE WITH LIMIT POWER STORAGEFIELD

[0001] The invention discussed below relates generally to wireless communication systems, and more particularly, to method for improving sustainability of device with limit power storage.BACKGROUND

[0002] For a low power IoT system, e.g., ambient IoT (A-IoT) in 3GPP Rel-19 and zero-power system for future 6G, the device always has a very limited power storage and is charged based on the ambient energy source, e.g., RF, solar, wind, vibration, etc. For such a system, it is essential to improve the sustainability / availability duration of the device and also reduce the latency and / or completion time of the device (s) for completing a task, e.g., inventory, so that the task can be completed within the device sustainability / availability duration.SUMMARY

[0003] The following presents a simplified summary of one or more aspects in order to provide a basic understanding of such aspects. This summary is not an extensive overview of all contemplated aspects, and is intended to neither identify key or critical elements of all aspects nor delineate the scope of any or all aspects. Its sole purpose is to present some concepts of one or more aspects in a simplified form as a prelude to the more detailed description that is presented later.

[0004] Various aspects of the present disclosure relate to the solutions on sustainability / availability improvement for a device with limit power storage, and latency / completion time reduction for a device completing a task / procedure. Specifically, based on whether the remaining energy of the device is enough for transmission and reception procedures or not, the device is defined as available and unavailable, respectively, with different power characteristics. Several solutions for triggering device transition between available and unavailable are disclosed including generally determined by the device itself and / or scheduled by the reader. The corresponding signaling involved in the device transition between available and unavailable are disclosed.

[0005] In another aspect of the disclosure, different solution for reducing the latency / completion time of the device for completing a task / procedure are presented. Specifically, based on device capability, a coarse info related to the energy storage, and / or explicit info related to the (remaining) energy storage can be reported by the device. Based on it, some info can be  provided by the reader to assist and / or schedule the device behavior, e.g., prioritized device (s) access, and / or resource allocation and / or inventory trigger for a specific device, and / or a group of devices.

[0006] To the accomplishment of the foregoing and related ends, the one or more aspects comprise the features hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims. The following description and the annexed figures set forth in detail certain illustrative features of the one or more aspects. These features are indicative, however, of but a few of the various ways in which the principles of various aspects may be employed, and this description is intended to include all such aspects and their equivalents.BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0008] FIG. 2 illustrates an exemplary diagram of the device operation procedures.DETAILED DESCRIPTION

[0009] The detailed description set forth below in connection with the appended drawings is intended as a description of various configurations and is not intended to represent the only configurations in which the concepts described herein may be practiced. The detailed description includes specific details for the purpose of providing a thorough understanding of various concepts. However, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that these concepts may be practiced without these specific details. In some instances, well known structures and components are shown in block diagram form in order to avoid obscuring such concepts.

[0010] Several aspects of telecommunication systems will now be presented with reference to various apparatus and methods. These apparatus and methods will be described in the following detailed description and illustrated in the accompanying drawings by various blocks, components, circuits, processes, algorithms, etc. (collectively referred to as “elements” ) . These elements may be implemented using electronic hardware, computer software, or any combination thereof. Whether such elements are implemented as hardware or software depends upon the particular application and design constraints imposed on the overall system.

[0011] This invention is motived by, but not limited to, a scenario of low power IoT, where a device with very limited power storage and very low peak power consumption is responsible for a communication with a reader, e.g., BS and / or UE. The device is charged when it performs energy harvesting based on the external / ambient sources like RF, solar, light, wind, and / or vibration, etc. The device is discharged when it performs signal transmission, signal reception, clock running,  and / or memory writing / reading, etc. Considering the very limited power storage of the device, to improving system efficiency, e.g., finish expected task (s) within a specific duration limit by the power storage, it is essential for solutions to solve two aspects. The first one is to improve device availability duration. The second one it to reduce the latency, and / or improve the efficiency for a device to complete the task (s) .

[0012] In one aspect of the disclosure, the solutions for improving device availability duration are presented. Basically, based on whether the stored energy is sufficient for at least signal transmission / reception or not, the device becomes available or unavailable, respectively. When device becomes available, it is capable of signal transmission, signal reception / monitoring / detection, clock running, volatile memory (VM) writing and / or reading, non-volatile memory (NVM) writing and / or reading, and / or energy harvesting. When device becomes unavailable, it is not capable of signal transmission, and / or signal reception / monitoring / detection, and is capable of energy harvesting, and / or NVM maintaining (i.e., the information stored in NVM is retained) . Whether the device is capable of VM maintain (i.e., the information stored in VM is not retained) depends on the energy status when device becomes unavailable. For example, if the remaining energy is no less than a threshold for maintaining a VM, then the device is capable of the VM maintain when it becomes unavailable. Otherwise, the device is not capable of the VM maintain when it becomes unavailable. Additionally, regarding clock running when device becomes unavailable, two capabilities are defined. The first one, clock-capability#1, is w / o clock running. The second one, clock-capability#2, is w / clock running. For clock-capability#2, it can be further divided into different sub-capabilities of #2-1, #2-2, etc., based on the clock characteristics, e.g., clock power consumption, and / or accuracy.

[0013] In addition to the two basic definition of device availability and unavailability, two further solutions are proposed in this disclosure regarding the availability improvement of the device. Solution#1 is purely based on device energy status and then device becomes available or unavailable. For example, if the device stored energy / remaining energy is no less than a threshold / percentage, e.g., 100%, 70%or X%, etc., compared to the device energy storage size, then the device becomes available, and is capable of the corresponding operations / functions as defined above when device becomes available. Otherwise, if the device stored energy is smaller than a threshold / percentage, e.g., 70%, 50%, Y%, etc., compared to the device energy storage size, then the device becomes unavailable, and the capabilities of the devices is described above as device becomes unavailable. Additionally, for this solution #1, when device is unavailable, clock-capability#1 is applied.

[0014] Regarding availability improvement of the device, another solution#2 is based on the information provided by the reader, the device becomes available or unavailable. For this solution  #2, the operations from both the device side and reader side are discussed. From the device side, the energy storage info or energy storage related info is reported to the reader. In one aspect of the disclosure, one case is that the device is not capable of measurement / judgement on the remaining energy storage. In this case, the energy storage related info is reported to the reader after the connection between device and reader established. For example, the capacitor size, energy storage size / capacity, device type, etc, can be reported by the device to the reader through a D2R transmission / PDRCH channel. Based on the reported energy storage related info, reader can estimate the availability status / duration of the device. In another aspect of the disclosure, another case is that the device is capable of measurement / judgement on the remaining energy storage. In this case, the measured energy status, e.g., remaining energy amount, and / or further availability duration can be dynamically reported by the device to the reader through a D2R transmission / PDRCH channel. Alternatively, the device can also calculate the availability duration based on the measure energy status, and then report its availability duration to the reader via PRDCH transmission. For the case that the reported energy status is remaining energy amount, then reader can estimate the availability status / duration of the device.

[0015] For solution #2, from the reader side, information is provided by the reader for triggering / assist device transition between available and unavailable. In one aspect of the solution #2, it could be dynamic scheduling. Further, one detailed mechanism for dynamic scheduling is energy based prioritized triggering. For example, based on the reported energy or energy related info from the device, or based on the report device availability status / duration estimation, a prioritized scheduling or access sent by the reader to device can be applied. That means, based on this prioritized scheduling or access provided by the reader, the device (s) w / prioritized scheduling or access will become available first. While the device (s) w / deprioritized scheduling or access will become unavailable first, and become available later. For example, for a specific device or a group of device (s) with availability duration or energy storage size smaller than a threshold, and / or for a specific device or a group of device (s) with faster charging / energy harvesting duration, e.g., a smaller energy storage size, and / or a closer distance from the reader, it can be scheduled with a prioritization, e.g., by allocating earlier time resource (s)  / access slot (s) or by indicating an earlies transition to available. Otherwise, the device (s) is scheduled with a de-prioritization, e.g., by allocating later time resource (s)  / access slot (s) or by indication of an unavailable transition first for a duration before the communication with prioritized scheduling is finished, and a later triggering for available transition after the communication with prioritized scheduling is finished.

[0016] Additionally, another detailed mechanism for dynamic scheduling is slotted-ALOHA based opportunistic triggering. For example, for the device scheduled by a slotted-ALOHA channel access, after the random slotted-ALOHA counter generated, the device (s) w / slotted- ALOHA counter value no less than threshold (e.g., 3) can become unavailable. For this mechanism, two issues need to be solved. The first one is for the device become unavailable after random slotted-ALOHA counter generation, when it becomes available. Another issue is after the device becomes available from unavailable, how the device determines its slotted-ALOHA counter value or access occasion. For the first issue, one solution is reader can indicate a time duration for determining when device (s) or a group of devices become available. For example, the time duration could be a time length starting from the time occasion that the R2D transmission (e.g., paging message) is transmitted from the reader, or the R2D transmission is received by the device. The indication could be per device w / a device ID, and / or per device group w / a device group ID. Another solution is a fixed reference duration Tref can be (pre-) defined /  (pre-) configured. The fixed duration could be a min duration only considering the case of empty access occasion, i.e., the occasion with only one R2D transmission (e.g., Msg. 0) duration and no corresponding D2R response. In this case, the fixed duration is comprised of one R2D transmission duration TR2D_trans, and one reader waiting / processing duration (with a (pre-) defined /  (pre-) configured value as Treader_w) , i.e., Tref=TR2D_trans+Treader_w. Then, for the case that the device becomes unavailable after generating the random slotted-ALOHA counter of value q, it can become available in (q-n) ×Tref-Tgap. The value of n is (pre-) defined or (pre-) configured, e.g., n=2 and q>n. The Tgap is a gap comprised of durations by considering the device type / capability, and / or device SFO value, and / or min processing timing for Rx / Tx of the device, and / or additional margin for avoid missing the target access occasion by considering collision status. For the case of n=2, the device will switch from unavailable to available after (q-2) ×Tref-Tgap since the device became unavailable. After that, at least one R2D transmission (e.g., Msg. 0 of count-down and / or QueryRep signal) from the reader for indicating the count-down information can be received by the device. Based on the specific count-down information (as detailed below) , the device is able to calculate the slotted-ALOHA counter value after it receives the R2D transmission (e.g., Msg. 0 of count-down and / or QueryRep signal) . Alternatively, the fixed duration Tref could be a max duration considering the case of non-empty access occasion, i.e., the occasion with M i.e., one or multiple, same or different R2D transmission duration (s) , e.g., Msg. 0, Msg. 2, etc., N i.e., one or multiple, same or different D2R transmission duration (s) TD2R_trans, e.g., Msg. 1, Msg. 3, etc., P1, i.e., one or multiple, same or different waiting / processing duration (s) at the reader side, and / or P2, i.e., one or multiple, same or different waiting / processing duration (s) at the device sideTdevice_w. In this case, fixed duration Tref is calculated by considering all the above mentioned R2D / D2R transmission duration (s) , reader / device waiting / processing duration (s) . It should be noted that, as mentioned above, based on the specific transmission signal, e.g., whether it is Msg.  0 or Msg. 2, each R2D transmission duration could be same or different. Similar principle also applies D2R transmission duration, reader and device waiting / processing duration. Based on it, the Then, for a device with generated random slotted-ALOHA counter of q, it can switch to available after (q-n) ×Tref-Tgap. It should be noted that, for different fixed duration definition, the value of Tgap could be different, and all parameters are in a time unit, e.g., second.

[0017] For slotted-ALOHA based opportunistic triggering, regarding the 2nd issue, after the device becomes available from unavailable, how the device determines its slotted-ALOHA counter value or access occasion. One solution is each time when reader sends the Msg. 0 (e.g., count-down and / or QueryRep signal) , it will also indicate the transmission times of the current Msg. 0. That means, a count-down signaling counter for counting how many times the Msg. 0 or count-down signaling is transmitted is maintained by the reader, and the reader will send the value of count-down signaling counter together with Msg. 0 (e.g., count-down) signaling. For example, for the 1st, 2nd, and Xth count-down signaling transmission, reader also sends the count-down signaling counter value as 1, 2, and X, respectively, together with the count-down signaling. In this case, after device receives the signaling of count-down and count-down signaling counter, it is aware of the transmission time that the count-down signaling transmitted, thus is able to calculate the slotted-ALOHA counter value based on the count-down signaling counter value. For example, if the value of count-down signaling counter is c, then the device can calculate the value of its slotted-ALOHA counter as q-c . Based on the new calculated value q-c of slotted-ALOHA counter, legacy slotted-ALOHA procedures can be utilized by the device in the following procedures. That is each time when the device receives a count-down signaling, the slotted-ALOHA counter is decreased by 1. When the slotted-ALOHA counter is decreased to 0, the device will send the corresponding D2R transmission. Additionally, in this disclosure, if the count-down signaling counter value is not transmitted by the reader, the device will transmit corresponding D2R at the occasion after the occasion that device switch from unavailable to available.

[0018] Figure 1 is given for illustrating the above dynamic scheduling of slotted-ALOHA based opportunistic triggering. In the beginning of the inventory, reader will issue a Query or paging message for indicating the Q value of the slotted-ALOHA. After device receives this message, a slotted-ALOHA counter is randomly generated in the range of [0, 2Q-1] . Within the coverage of the reader, there are three devices indexed as device 1 / 2 / 3 with random slotted-ALOHA counter q of 1 / 4 / 6. In this example, it is assumed n=2. Thus, for the device 2 / 3 w / q>n, they become unavailable. While for the device 1 w / q<n, it becomes available. Then for  device 1, based on the QueryRep info in the following transmission of QueryRep w / count-down signaling (CDS) counter from reader, device 1 decreases its slotted-ALOHA counter by 1 each time when it receives the transmission of QueryRep w / count-down signaling (CDS) counter. When the slotted-ALOHA counter of device 1 is decreased to 0, the corresponding communication between device 1 and reader can be performed, i.e., Msg. 1 / 2 / 3 transmission illustrating in the figure. For device 2 or 3, based on the clock running, it becomes available after a duration of (q-2) ×Tref-Tgap. Then based on the CDS-counter value in the following transmission of QueryRep w / count-down signaling (CDS) counter from reader, device 2 or 3 can determine its slotted-ALOHA counter value. For example, after device 2 becomes available, it receives a QueryRep w / count-down signaling (CDS) counter = 3, then it can determine its slotted-ALOHA counter value as 4-3=1. After that, device 2 decreases its slotted-ALOHA counter by 1 each time when it receives the transmission of QueryRep w / count-down signaling (CDS) counter. When the slotted-ALOHA counter of device 2 is decreased to 0, the corresponding communication between device 2 and reader can be performed, i.e., Msg. 1 / 2 / 3 transmission illustrating in the figure. Similar procedures also applied for device 2.

[0019] Additionally, another dynamic scheduling is task based dedicated device triggering. Specifically, the device (s) and / or device group (s) targeted for a task can be indicated by the reader via the device ID (s) and / or device group ID (s) , respectively, in the initial transmission e.g., paging transmission. Then only the corresponding device (s) and / or device group (s) will stay in available. And the other device (s) and / or device group (s) will stay in unavailable. It should be noted that for dynamical scheduling, the above sub-solution can be applied simultaneously. For example, the slotted-ALOHA based opportunistic triggering can be applied together with the task based dedicated device triggering.

[0020] In another aspect of the disclosure, for solution #2, from the reader side, information is provided by the reader for triggering / assisting device transition between available and unavailable. Specifically, it could be periodic scheduling for triggering a device transition between available and unavailable by indicating the transition condition is periodic and also the value of periodicity via PRDCH.

[0021] In another aspect of the disclosure, for solution #2, from the reader side, information is provided by the reader for triggering / assist device transition between available and unavailable. Specifically, it could be pre-defined triggering by (pre-) defined /  (pre-) configured a time duration and if there is no expected R2D within a pre-defined duration, then device transits to unavailable.

[0022] Figure 2 is given for illustrating the device operations. After device initialization, if the energy level is no less than a threshold (e.g., 70%, or a value for support the device Tx / Rx for a specific duration) , then the device is available. Otherwise, if the energy level is less than a  threshold, then the device is available. If device is unavailable, device performs EH. Then is the energy level being no less than a threshold, the device switch to available. Otherwise, the device is still unavailable. If the device is available, the device can perform the functions supported when device is available, e.g., signal transmission and / or reception. After that, the energy level is judged. If the energy level is less than a threshold, the device switch to unavailable. Otherwise, if the energy level is no less than a threshold, and if the device (e.g., Dev1 is the figure) support Clock-capability#1 as aforementioned, i.e., w / o clock running when unavailable, then the device is still available. Otherwise, if f the energy level is no less than a threshold, and if the device support Clock-capability#2 (e.g., Dev2 in the figure) as aforementioned, i.e., w / clock running when unavailable, then it is further judged whether the device support transition between available and unavailable based on the Solution#2 aforementioned. If no, the device is still available. Otherwise, the device will judge whether switch to unavailable based on the mechanisms in Solution#2 as described before, e.g., energy based prioritized triggering, slotted-ALOHA based opportunistic triggering, and task based dedicated device triggering. After it, the device determines whether stay in available, or switch to unavailable. If device determines to switch to unavailable, then the device performs EH and also run a clock (i.e., Clocl-capability#2) , and device will determine whether further stay in unavailable, or switch to available based on its running clock and also the information / scheduling provided by the reader. It should be noted that,
