Description

TWO-COMPONENT ACRYLIC ADHESIVE COMPOSITIONS, ARTICLES AND ASSEMBLIES THEREFROMTechnical field

[0001] The present disclosure relates to two-component acrylic adhesive compositions suitable for structural adhesive applications, articles, and assemblies therefrom, especially structural adhesive compositions for bonding low surface energy material. The two-component acrylic adhesive compositions can be used, at a volume ratio of 1: 0.8 to 1: 1.2.Background of the invention

[0002] Structural adhesives are widely used in the various industry, for example display frame bonding, car body bonding, automotive components bonding and electric motor magnet bonding. Generally, all these applications demand extremely good bond strength throughout the final products'life cycle. Two-component (2K) acrylic adhesive initiated by organoborane is an ideal and effective adhesive for bonding low surface energy materials, especially for untreated polyolefin surface.

[0003] Two-component acrylic adhesives come in different ratios. Typically, the volume ratio is about 1: 1 between components A and B, but it can also be 2: 1, 4: 1, and 10: 1. The reason these different ratios are available is versatility. For traditional 10: 1 ratio adhesive initiated by organoborane, 1 Part usually has low viscosity, and 10 Part usually has high viscosity. Some rheological additives or fillers must be added into 1 Part to achieve a comparable viscosity.

[0004] Bead-on-bead is a unique technology for a two-component acrylic adhesive. Rather than premixing components A and B, each component is applied to the component and the mixing occurs when the two items to be bonded are joined. Thus bead-on-bead technology requires the two components both have similar viscosity and a mixing volume ratio / weight ratio of about 1: 1, for example, 1: 0.8 to 1: 1.2.

[0005] Some commercial two-component acrylic adhesives initiated by organoborane comprise MMA  (methyl methacrylate) or THFMA (tetrahydrofurfuryl methacrylate) in adhesive system as monomer due to its good adhesion ability to plastics and rapid reaction speed. But MMA leads to MMA odour and relatively high risk of flammability. This may become problematic in metal-working shops and other places where typical odour such as distinctive MMA odour is restricted. A high flammability induces a high risk of fire and / or explosion if there is a source of ignition nearby. THFMA, commercially available as Sartomer SR 203, is a CMR (Carcinogenic、Mutagenic、Reprotoxic) material and has H360 GHS label in its MSDS file, which may damage fertility or the unborn child (Danger Reproductive toxicity) . CMR material has been forbidden in recent years.

[0006] Then, how to balance bonding performance on low surface energy materials, sustainability and environmental protection of 1: 1 volume ratio / weight ratio acrylic adhesive system initiated by organoborane is still a big challenge.Summary of the invention

[0025] Unless otherwise defined, all terms used in the disclosing the invention, including technical and scientific terms, have the meaning as commonly understood by one of the ordinary skills in the art to which this invention belongs to. By means of further guidance, term definitions are included to better appreciate the teaching of the present invention.

[0026] In the context of this disclosure, several terms shall be utilized.

[0027] The terms “polymer” is used herein consistent with its common usage in chemistry. Polymers are composed of many repeated subunits. The term “polymer” is used to describe the resultant material formed from a polymerization reaction.

[0028] The term “acrylic” refers to both or any one of “acrylic” and “methacrylic” .

[0030] The terms “curing” is used herein means a process of hardening of a material. The term is intended to encompass the cross-linking of components within the material which possess reactive groups.

[0031] As used herein, the term “one component (1 K) composition" refers to a composition where, during storage of the composition, the composition components are all admixed together but the properties of the composition, including viscosity, remain consistent enough over the time of storage to permit successful utility of the composition later.

[0032] The term “two-component (2K) compositions" are understood to be compositions in which a first component / component and a second component / part must be stored in separate vessels because of their (high) reactivity. The two components / parts are mixed only shortly before application and  then react, typically without additional activation, with bond formation and thereby formation of a polymeric network.

[0033] The term “bead-on-bead” describes a unique chemistry for a two-component acrylic adhesive. Rather than premixing components A and B, each component is applied to the component and the mixing occurs when the two items to be bonded are joined.

[0034] The term “fixture time” refers to the amount of time it takes for the adhesive to not only bond but also reach handling strength. Fast fixturing allows parts to quickly gain enough strength to avoid displacement during subsequent processing.

[0035] Viscosities of the composition compositions may be determined using the Brookfield Viscometer, Model RVT at standard conditions of 25℃ and 50%Relative Humidity (RH) . The viscometer is calibrated using silicone oils of known viscosities, which vary from 5, 000 cps to 300, 000 cps. A set of RV spindles that attach to the viscometer are used for the calibration. Measurements of the damping composition are done at 25℃ using the No. 7 spindle at a speed of 20 revolutions per minute for 1 minute until the viscometer equilibrates.

[0036] As discussed previously, embodiments of the present disclosure are directed to a two-component acrylic adhesive composition comprising a component A (part A) and a component B (part B) . The two-component acrylic adhesive composition comprises an organoborane amine complex initiator in the component A, an acid decomplexer in the component B, a toughening agent in the component A and the component B, a specific first acrylate monomer in the component A and the component B, wherein the volume ratio or weight ratio of component A to component B is from 1: 0.8 to 1: 1.2.

[0037] Organoborane amine complex initiator

[0038] The two-component acrylic adhesive composition of present invention comprises an organoborane amine complex initiator in the component A.

[0039] The organoborane amine complex initiator comprises any suitable complex of an organoborane with a complexing agent. A “complex” is understood to be a tightly coordinated salt formed by  association of a Lewis base (e.g. amine) .

[0040] One suitable type of initiator comprises a complex of an organoborane with an amine. The amine may be of any type of amine that complexes the organoborane and that can be decomplexed to free the organoborane when desired.

[0041] Such organoborane amine complexes may be represented by the following formula:

[0042] where R1 is C1-C6 alkyl; R2 and R3, which may be the same or different, are H, C1-C6 alkyl or C3-C6 cycloalkyl, phenyl, or phenyl-substituted C1-C6 alkyl or C3-C6 cycloalkyl, provided that any two of R1-R3 may optionally be part of a carbocyclic ring; and A is an amine. Preferably, R1, R2 and R3 are independently selected from C1-C5 alkyl, especially C2-C4 alkyl. Most preferably, R1, R2 and R3 are the same.

[0043] The value of n is selected to provide an effective ratio of primary or secondary amine nitrogen atoms to boron atoms in the complex. The ratio of primary or secondary amine nitrogen atoms to boron atoms in the complex is from about 0.5: 1 to 4: 1, preferably about 1: 1.

[0044] Suitable initiator is selected from triethylborane-1, 3-diaminopropane, tributylborane-3-methoxypropylamine, tributylborane-hexamethylene diamine and triethylborane diethylenetriamine.

[0045] In some of the embodiments, the initiator may be present in the composition from 1 wt. %to 7 wt. %, or from 1.1 wt. %to 6 wt. %, or from 1.1 wt. %to 5 wt. %, based on the total weight of the component A.

[0046] If the content of the initiator is less than 1 wt. %in component A, the composition may not have desired cure speed, whereas if the content of the initiator is greater than 7 wt. %, it may lead to  instability issue and too high in initiator content may also result in low molecular weight product and too brittle cured product.

[0047] In some embodiments, the initiator is present in the composition from 0.5 wt. %to 3.5 wt. %, or from 0.5 wt. %to 3 wt. %, or from 0.55 wt. %to 3 wt. %, or from 0.5 wt. %to 2.5 wt. %, based on the total weight of the composition.

[0048] Acid decomplexer

[0049] B component of traditional two component acrylic compositions usually include an amine reactive compound, which is reactive with the organoborane amine complex initiator and can liberate the organoborane for initiating polymerization of acrylate monomer. Useful amine reactive compounds include acid, aldehyde and anhydride. The amine reactive compound can also be called as decomplexer.

[0050] As known, for traditional two-component organoborane acrylic adhesives, in addition to organoborane amine complex initiator, carrier is an important compound in component A. A wide variety of aziridine-functional materials may be used as carrier, including monofunctional aziridine and polyaziridine. The viscosity of component A can be adjusted by the amount of carrier to configure two-component adhesives with different mixing ratios. Since such carrier reacts with acid in situ to crosslink, the amount of acid decomplexer in component B preferably is equal to the sum of the number of equivalents of amine functionality plus the number of equivalents of aziridine functionality in the composition. Thus, it is hard to add acidic components such as acrylate monomers or tougheners with acidic functional groups in component A. In present invention, component A doesn’ t comprise such carrier, but comprise the first acrylate monomer and the toughening agent.

[0051] The two-component acrylic adhesive composition according to the present invention comprises an acid decomplexer in the component B.

[0052] Suitable acid decomplexer for present invention comprises acidic acrylate monomer. The acidic acrylate monomer comprises one or more selected from methacrylic acid, acrylic acid, maleic acid and maleic anhydride. Other kind of decomplexer, such as (3-Methacryloxypropyl) triacetoxysilane, epoxy and isocyanate terminated compounds exhibited slower reaction speed and resulted in longer fixture time. Organic acid is not preferred, because it can’ t participate in polymerization in the composition and cause odour.

[0053] In some embodiments, the acid decomplexer is present in the composition from 0.5 wt. %to 4.0 wt. %, or from 0.7 wt. %to 3.5 wt. %, or from 1 wt. %to 3.5 wt. %, or from 1.5 wt. %to 3.5 wt. %, based on the total weight of the composition.

[0054] Toughening agent

[0055] <Rubber toughening agent>

[0056] The composition according to the present invention comprises a rubber. The rubber is present in part A of the composition and / or in part B of the composition, the rubber in the part A is the same or different than the rubber in part B.

[0057] The rubber may be liquid or solid natural or synthetic rubber elastomeric polymer. Preferably the rubber is selected from the group consisting of polybutadienes, functionalized polybutadienes, polyisobutylenes, functionalized polyisobutylenes, butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymers, functionalized butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymers, functionalized styrene-butadiene copolymers, styrene butadiene copolymers, styrene-isoprene copolymers, functionalized styrene-isoprene copolymers, polyisoprenes, methyl methacrylate-Butadiene-Styrene copolymers, and mixtures thereof, wherein said polybutadienes, polyisobutylenes, butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymers and styrene-butadiene copolymers are functionalized with a functional group selected from the group consisting of a hydroxyl, a carboxyl, a carboxylic acid anhydride, an epoxy, and mixtures thereof, more preferably the rubber is selected from the group consisting of , styrene-butadiene copolymers, butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymers, styrene-isoprene copolymers, Methyl methacrylate-Butadiene-Styrene copolymers and mixtures thereof.

[0058] Above listed rubbers are preferred because they provide good impact resistant properties while hydrophobic properties of the selected rubbers ensure that they do not impact high temperature, high humidity performance.

[0059] Suitable commercially available rubber for use in the present invention include but is not limited to Kraton D 1155ES from Kraton.

[0060] If the content of rubber toughening agent is less than 20 wt. %in component A or component B, the composition may not have desired adhesion strength on low surface energy surface.

[0061] The rubber may be present in the part A or Part B of the composition according to the present invention from 20 wt. %to 35 wt. %, or from 20 wt. %to 34 wt. %, or from 22 wt. %to 31 wt. %.

[0062] In some embodiments, the rubber is present from 20 wt. %to 35 wt. %, or from 20 wt. %to 34 wt. %, or from 24 wt. %to 31 wt. %, based on the total weight of the composition.

[0063] < (meth) acrylate oligomer toughening agent>

[0188] Apply a small drop (0.01g) of Component A to microscope slide 1 and apply a small drop (0.01g) of Component B to microscope slide 2 separately, as in Fig. 2.

[0189] Assemble the microscope slide 2 as in Fig. 3 such that the two slides form an angle between the 30° and 90°. Press the slides together to ensure the two drops contact each other perfectly and spreads out evenly.

[0190] Cure the microscope slide assembly in room temperature for certain time during the testing.

[0191] Apply a shearing movement to the microscope slide assembly, by hand, as shown in Fig. 3. Avoid  applying a tensile or bending force to the microscope slide assembly.

[0192] The microscope slide assembly is considered fixtured if the adhesive bond supports the shearing moment without relative movement of two microscope slides.

[0193] Record the fixture time as the shortest cure time at which 3 microscope slide assembly replicated are fixtured.

[0194] Prewashed glass microscope slides, with approximate dimensions of 76 by 26 by 1 mm. Isopropyl alcohol wipe all specimens to remove dust.

[0213] CE6: Failure to bond PP substrate.

[0214] CE8: Part A gelled and cured during preparation / failed

[0215] In Examples 1 to 13 the structural adhesive compositions were prepared according to the formulations according to the present invention. These formulations especially include claimed first acrylate monomer, toughening agent, organoborane amine complex initiator, and acid decomplexer. It can be seen that when the contents of the claimed components of the present invention are within certain ranges, especially the first acrylate monomer, the structural adhesive samples have good lap shear strength on PP surface at both high temperature and room temperature, required failure mode and desired mixture time.

[0216] Compared with E1, the amount of toughening agent in comparative example CE1 is less than claimed amount, and the structural adhesive composition with insufficient amount of toughening agent can’ t pass the lap-shear strength test on low surface energy material at room temperature, and it failed the test at high temperature too.

[0217] In CE2, the composition comprises another type of decomplexer, which has negative impact on both fixture time and lap-shear strength.

[0218] From the result of CE3, it can be seen that the amount of the first acrylate monomer is insufficient, thus the rubber toughening agent can’ t completely dissolved in the composition.

[0219] In the compositions of CE5 and CE6, rubber toughening agent can be dissolved well, but the bonding strengths on PP substrate are poor.

[0220] Compared the results of E7 and CE8, adding carrier in the adhesive composition of present invention leads to an obvious decrease in bonding strength.
