[0004] Technical Field
[0005] The invention relates to a robot for automatically equipping and operating at least one test instrument, to a method of automatically equipping and operating at least one test instrument, to a test system for automatically performing at least one test procedure on at least one sample and to a method of automatically performing at least one test procedure. The devices and methods of the present invention, as an example, may be used in the field of medical or chemical laboratories in which typically at least one sample has to be handled. The sample may contain a liquid sample, for example a biological sample, such as blood, blood plasma, blood serum, urine, saliva or other types of body fluid, and / or a chemical sample, such as a reagent, a reactant or a solvent. As an example, the robot may be used for equipping at least one test instrument with the sample and may operate for operating the test instrument, such as for performing an analytical and / or a pre-analytical step. However, other types of applications are also feasible.
[0006] Background art
[0007] In the field of medical or chemical laboratories, even though making use of automated sample handling, generally still require human skill and coordination for a plurality of tasks. As an example, tasks that involve coordination of both timing and positioning of samples, such as when operating laboratory equipment for performing test procedures on samples, are typically performed by laboratory personnel and / or on site staff. However, due to usually temperature sensitive samples, working environment and conditions are challenging for humans.
[0008] Similarly, testing and quality control of laboratory equipment, usually done under real operating conditions, typically also requires human skill and coordination. Thus, as an example, handling samples, operating laboratory equipment as well as testing and quality control of laboratory equipment are usually performed by laboratory personnel and / or on-site staff under challenging environmental conditions.
[0009] Reliability and accuracy of sample handling, as well as the desire to speed up operating and testing procedures are technical challenges that remain. In particular, increasing the speed of handover operations, reducing handling errors and automating system operation is crucial for increasing throughput of laboratory procedures. P39263

Then, still as part of step B), at least one of the drawers of the refrigerator 124, on which the at least one tube rack 128 may be stored, may be pulled out by using the multifunctional transport component 150. Subsequently and further by using the multifunctional transport component 150, the tube rack 128 may be moved from the refrigerator 124 to the desk. In a further subsequent motion, e.g. still as part of step B), the at least one drawer of the refrigerator 124 may be pushed back into the refrigerator 124, e.g. by further using the multifunctional transport component 150. Afterwards, i.e. still in step B), the refrigerator door may close automatically. Subsequently, the method 194 may comprise a step, specifically before performing step C), in which the tube gripper 140 may be used to unscrew and store aside the at least one cap of at least one sample tube 126, wherein the caps may be stored in a predefined cap storage area. Then, i.e. in step C), the robot 114, specifically by using the multifunctional transport component 150 and the robotic arm 132 may move the tube rack 128 from the desk to the pipetting robot, where liquid may be transferred into the sample tube 126. Further, subsequently, i.e. as part of step E) of the method 194 and as part of step d) of the method 166, the robot 114, specifically by using the scanning device 144, may scan the identifier 146 of the at least one sample tube 126, e.g. a barcode attached to an outer surface of the sample tube 126, specifically while the sample tube 126 may be positioned within the tube rack 128. Subsequently, i.e. as part of step E) of the method 194, the at least one sample tube 126 may be moved, e.g. by using the multifunctional transport component 150 and the robotic arm 132, from the desk to the at least one test instrument 116. As an example, an exact position of the test instrument 116 may be predetermined and / or preset, e.g. by using one or more mounting frames and / or baskets, into which the test instrument 116 may be positionable. As an example, the position of the test instrument 116 may be hardware coded by matching the carrying basket with a frame mounted to the surface of the desk and / or table. The frame and / or basket may also be configured to provide electrical contacts for powering the test instrument 116. Thus, as an example, the robot 114 may have access to a position information of the test instrument 116 allowing for a precise positioning of the at least one sample tube 126 into the sample receptacle 120 of the test instrument 116. Subsequently, e.g. as part of step E) of the method 194 and as part of step g) of the method 166, the artificial finger 143 may be used P39263
[0196] - 36 - for turning on the power to the test instrument 116 and may further be used for entering a key combination into the input unit 118, indicating to the test instrument 116 that a “new test” is to be performed, and may further start the testing procedure, e.g. one or more measurements and / or analyses, performed by the test instrument 116. The item of information on the respective sample tube 126 provided to the test instrument 116, as stored in the data base, may simultaneously and / or subsequently be displayed on the e-paper display 148 and scanned by the test instrument’s scanner 122. Once the test instrument 116 has performed the at least one test procedure, e.g. as part of step E) of the method 194 and as part of step k) of the method 166, the at least one sample tube 126 may be removed from the sample receptacle 120 of the test instrument 116 by using the tube gripper 140 and the robotic arm 132 of the robot 114. Subsequently, e.g. as part of step E) of the method 194 and as part of step 1) of the method 166, the at least one test instrument 116 may be returned to the trolley 172.
