[0081] The following embodiments are exemplary. Although the specification may refer to “an” , “one” , or “some” embodiment (s) in several locations of the text, this does not necessarily mean that each reference is made to the same embodiment (s) , or that a particular feature only applies to a single embodiment. Single features of different embodiments may also be combined to provide other  embodiments. Further, when a particular feature, structure, or characteristic is de-scribed in connection of an embodiment, it is within the knowledge of one skilled in the art to apply such feature, structure, or characteristic in connection with other embodiments whether or not explicitly described. It shall be understood that although the terms “first, ” “second” and the like may be used herein to de-scribe various elements, these elements should not be limited by these terms. These terms are only used to distinguish one element from another.

[0082] For the purposes of the present disclosure, the phrases “at least one of A or B” , “at least one of A and B” , and “A and / or B” means (A) , (B) , or (A and B) . For the purposes of the present disclosure, the phrase “A, B, and / or C” means (A) , (B) , (C) , (A and B) , (A and C) , (B and C) , or (A, B, and C) .

[0083] In the following description and claims, unless defined otherwise, all technical and scientific terms used herein have the same meaning as commonly understood by one of ordinary skills in the art to which this disclosure belongs.

[0084] As defined herein, a “computer-readable storage medium, ” which refers to a non-transitory physical storage medium (e.g., volatile or non-volatile memory device) , may be differentiated from a “computer-readable transmission medium, ” which refers to an electromagnetic signal. Such a medium may take many forms, including, but not limited to a non-transitory computer-readable storage medium (e.g., non-volatile media, volatile media) , and transmission media. Transmission media include, for example, coaxial cables, copper wire, fiber optic cables, and carrier waves that travel through space without wires or cables, such as acoustic waves and electromagnetic waves, including radio, optical and infrared waves. Signals include man-made transient variations in amplitude, frequency, phase, polarization or other physical properties transmitted through the transmission media. Examples of non-transitory computer-readable media include a magnetic computer readable medium (e.g., a floppy disk, hard disk, magnetic tape, any other magnetic medium) , an optical computer readable medium (e.g., a compact disc read only memory (CD-ROM) , a digital versatile disc (DVD) , a Blu-Ray disc, or the like) , a random access memory (RAM) , a programmable read only memory (PROM) , an erasable programmable read only memory (EPROM) , a FLASH-EPROM, or any other non-transitory medium from which a computer may read. The term computer-readable storage medium is used herein to refer to any computer-readable medium except transmission media. However, it will be appreciated that where embodiments are described to use a computer-readable storage medium, other types of computer-readable mediums may be substituted for or used in addition to the computer-readable storage medium in alternative embodiments.

[0085] FIG. 1 illustrates an exemplary network architecture of IMS supporting an IMS DC solution in which embodiments of the present disclosure may be implemented. The architecture can provide  an end-to-end IMS data channel service for a UE 101, where a peer may correspond to a remote UE supported by a remote IMS 120. As shown in FIG. 1, an IMS network can comprise a proxy-call session control function (P-CSCF) 111, serving-call session control function (S-CSCF) 112, IMS application server (AS) 113, home subscriber server (HSS) 114, data channel signaling function (DCSF) 115, media function (MF)  / media resource function (MRF) 116, network exposure function (NEF) 117, data channel application server (DCAS) 118, and IMS access gateway (IMS-AGW) 119 and other related network elements, such as a data channel application repository (DCAR) . It should be noted that the network architecture of FIG. 1 is shown as an example. The present disclosure may be implemented in any suitable deployment of IMS.

[0086] DCSF 115, MF 116, DCAS 118 and DCAR may be new network function elements introduced to support data channel services. The DCSF 115 is a signaling control function that provides data channel control logic. The MF 116 provides media capabilities in support of IMS DC. Alternatively, an existing IMS MRF (also called MRF) may be enhanced to perform media functions related to IMS DC. The DCAS 118 is an application server that interacts with the DCSF and the DC media function for data channel traffic handling. The DCAR stores the verified data channel applications which are retrieved by the DCSF when required.

[0087] In order to support data channel services in IMS, the DCSF 115 may support the following functionalities: receives event reports from the IMS AS 113 and decides whether a data channel service is allowed to be provided during the IMS session; manages bootstrap data channel and (if applicable) application data channel resources at the MF or MRF 116 via the IMS AS 113; supports HTTP web server functionality to download data channel applications (bootstrapping) via MF and / or MRF to the UE based on UE subscription; downloads data channel applications from a data channel application repository (DCAR) ; interacts with NEF for data channel capability exposure via interface N33; interacts with the DCAS 118 for DC resource control via reference point or interface DC4 / DC3, and for traffic forwarding via interface MDC3 / MDC2; and interacts with HSS 114 for retrieving and storing DCSF service specific data via interface N72 / Sc.

[0088] The MF and MRF may provide media resource management and forwarding of data channel media traffic. Specifically, the MF and MRF may provide the following functionalities: manage the data channel media resources (bootstrap and application data channel resources, if applicable) under the control of the IMS AS; terminate the bootstrap data channel from the UE and forward HTTP traffic between the UE and DCSF via interface MDC1; anchor the application data channel in P2P scenarios, if required, and forward application data traffic from / to the UEs; relay traffic on the A2P / P2A application data channels between the UE and the DCAS via interface MDC2.

[0089] In order to support data channel services in IMS, the S-CSCF 112 may be enhanced to support the following functionality: includes a Feature-Caps header field indicating its data channel capability in the 200 OK response to the initial and any subsequent REGISTER request from the UE 101.

[0090] In order to support the data channel services, the IMS AS 113 may be enhanced to support the following functionalities: interacts with the DCSF 115 via interface DC1 for event notifications; receives data channel control instructions from the DCSF 115 and accordingly interacts with the MF via interface DC2, or with the MRF via interface Mr' / Cr for data channel media resource management; and interacts with HSS 114 for retrieving and storing DC enhanced IMS AS service specific data via interface N71 / Sh.

[0091] In order to support data channel services, the HSS 114 may be enhanced with the following functionalities: stores IMS Data Channel subscription data as transparent data; interacts with the DCSF 115 during service data retrieval by the DCSF 115 via interface N72 / Sc; and interacts with IMS AS 113 during service data retrieval by IMS AS via interface N71 / Sh.

[0092] The UE 101 can establish an IMS data channel simultaneously while establishing an IMS audio / video session, or upgrade an ongoing IMS audio / video session through a re-INVITE to an IMS data channel session which has an IMS data channel. An IMS network and the UE need to mutually negotiate the capability of supporting IMS data channel when a UE supporting IMS data channel registers to the IMS network. In this regard, session initialization protocol (SIP) or session description protocol (SDP) may be utilized to perform SDP negotiation for the IMS data channel between the UE 101 and DCSF 115 or the MF 116. Based on a result of the SDP negotiation, the UE 101 could establish a bootstrap data channel with the MF 116, and retrieve a list of data channel application (also referred to simply as application, herein) and one or more applications from the MF 116 or DCSF 115 via the bootstrap data channel, by using related protocols, such as Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) , Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP) , Datagram Transport Layer Security (DTLS) , User Datagram Protocol (UDP) , and the like. In this context, a data channel application may be a Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML) page with embedded JavaScript (s) and optionally other objects, such as style sheet (s) or image (s) . A user of the UE can select any data channel application from the list. When the user wants to launch a data channel application, an SDP negotiation with an application data channel is performed. Once the SDP negotiation is completed, the application data channel may be established between the UE 101 and another UE or the IMS network (such as the DCAS 118) . The UE 101 could exchange data of the data channel application through the application data channel within an IMS session, with other UEs or with the IMS network.

[0093] Multimedia priority service (also referred to as MPS hereinafter) has been developed to provide a special high-priority access with a group of users and applies to an end-to-end session. MPS provides priority treatment for resources associated with the session (e.g., signaling-related resources and media bearer-related resources in IMS) . For example, an end-to-end priority treatment may include priority treatments supported by MPS capable network elements involved in a path of an MPS session, e.g., including an origination IMS network and a termination IMS network as well as any transit networks therebetween. Although priority services are available in IMS for audio channel services and video channel services, currently MPS can’t be supported in IMS DC service. From current standards, new components for supporting IMS data channel, such as DCSF, MF, DCAS, a new part of IMS AS for IMS data channel, are missed in the end-to-end priority treatment.

[0094] To at least partially tackle at least one of the above problems or other problems, there is proposed a solution to support priority services for IMS data channel.

[0095] Hereinafter, the solution of the present disclosure will be described in detail with reference to FIGs. 2 to 19.

[0096] FIG. 2 is a flow chart depicting a method 200 performed at an application server in IMS (such as IMS AS) according to embodiments of the present disclosure.

[0097] At block 210, an application server in IMS, e.g., an IMS AS 113 shown in FIG. 1, determines that a data channel to be established within an IMS session is prioritized over data channels within other IMS sessions.

[0098] The data channel to be established may be a bootstrap data channel and / or an application data channel. The bootstrap data channel is a data channel established within an IMS session between a UE and an IMS network, e.g., an MF in an originating IMS network (also called originating MF) , or an MF in a terminating IMS network (also called terminating MF) . The originating IMS network is an IMS network used to provide support to a UE (also called as originating UE) originating a call, and the terminating IMS network is an IMS used to provide support to a UE (also called as terminating UE) terminating a call. The bootstrap data channel may be used to transfer a graphical user interface that can include a list of data channel applications. The application data channel is a data channel within an IMS session used to transfer data of data channel applications between UEs or between the UE and an IMS network, e.g., an application server for data channel applications, such as DCAS.

[0099] The data channel within a session being prioritized may receive a higher priority service relative to data channels within other sessions. For example, related network elements (such as IMS AS, DCSF, MF, DCAS, and the like) in IMS may allocate and remain media resources for the data  channel, processing the session of the data channel, and transport signaling related to the data channel, based on a higher priority. The benefit of such higher priority service for data channel in IMS may be seen during adverse situations, e.g., natural disasters, security threats, or emergency situations when network congestion may occur etc.

[0100] The application server (such as IMS AS) may make the determination according to subscription data of a user of a terminal device (e.g., UE) originating a call for the data channel. For example, the user may be an authorized government, security, and special service users who need to be able to maintain communications via IMS during special situations. Such priority service for IMS DC may be allowed by an appropriate authority, and is done through an operator subscription mechanism with support for a special subscription profile for the priority service (e.g., MPS) . In an example, it is indicated by a priority level in the user’s IMS DC subscription data or MPS subscription profile in a subscriber server (such as HSS 114 in FIG. 1) , and retrieved by an IMS AS.

[0101] Although not shown, in some embodiments, the application server may authenticate that the data channel within the IMS session is prioritized over data channels within the other IMS sessions. For example, an IMS AS may retrieve from HSS, IMS DC subscription data or MPS subscription profile of an originating UE or a user of the originating UE of a call for the data channel, and check whether the UE or user is authorized to request a priority service for a data channel.

[0102] At block 220, the application server (such as IMS AS) may process an establishment of the data channel based on a priority associated with the data channel of the IMS session. The application server (such as IMS AS) may notify network elements related to the establishment of the data channel (such as DCSF, MF) of the priority, and transport signaling related to the establishment of the data channel based on the priority. The priority associated with the data channel is defined per IMS session. In this regard, the data channel would be established with a higher priority over data channels within other sessions. For example, during system overloads, normal calls may be rejected while a session with the data channel would be allowed.

[0103] In some embodiments, the priority associated with the data channel of the IMS session may be defined separately from other channels within the IMS session. In an example, an audio (or voice) channel and / or a video channel may be established simultaneously as the data channel within the IMS session, or may have been established within the IMS session. The data channel of the IMS session may have a dedicated priority, which is separated from priorities of the audio channel and the video channel.

[0104] In an example, more than one data channel would be established during the IMS session, some data channels may be established simultaneously as the data channel within the IMS session  and some data channels may have been established within the IMS session. All or a part of data channels within the IMS session may share a same priority. Alternatively, one data channel of the IMS session may have a dedicated priority, which is separated from priorities of other data channels within the IMS session. In this regard, the priority associated with the data channel is defined per data channel.

[0105] FIG. 3 is a flow chart depicting a method 300 performed at an application server (such as IMS AS) in IMS according to embodiments of the present disclosure. Block 310 may be implemented as or comprised in block 210 of FIG. 2. For some parts which have been described in the above embodiments, the description thereof is omitted here for brevity.

[0106] At block 310, the application server (such as IMS AS) may receive from a terminal device (e.g., UE 101 shown in FIG. 1) , a first request message for establishing the data channel. The first request message comprises an indication indicating the priority associated with the data channel of the IMS session.

[0107] The first request message may be a SIP INVITE request message or a SIP re-INVITE request message. In an embodiment, a UE can initiate an IMS session to establish an IMS bootstrap data channel, e.g., through an INVITE request message. In another embodiment, a UE can upgrade an ongoing IMS session (which comprises audio and / or video channels) through a re-INVITE request message to an IMS data channel session. An IMS bootstrap data channel may have been established during the ongoing IMS session, and the re-INVITE request message may request to establish an application data channel within the ongoing IMS session.

[0108] When a UE originates a call for establishing the data channel, MPS may be requested by including an indication, e.g., an MPS code / identifier in a session origination request, or optionally by using an MPS input string (e.g., a user identity) . The indication may be comprised in or may be a header or a payload of the first request message, such as a SIP Resource-Priority header. In an example, when initiating a call, a user of the UE may indicate that the call is a MPS call by adding a prefix to a directory number of a called party, such as *777+ Directory Number. This MPS call may be identified by an IMS network element (such as IMS Application Server, IMS AS) . Then the IMS AS adds a Resource-Priority header to an outgoing request message, so as to apply priority treatment to the call.

[0109] At block 320, the application server (such as IMS AS) may determine based on the indication, that an establishment of the data channel within the IMS session is prioritized over data channels within the other IMS sessions. In an example, according to the indication, an IMS AS may  retrieve from HSS, IMS DC subscription data or MPS subscription profile of the UE or a user of the UE, and check whether the UE or user is authorized to request a priority service for a data channel.

[0110] FIG. 4 is a flow chart depicting a method 400 performed at an application server (such as IMS AS) in IMS according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. For some parts which have been described in the above embodiments, the description thereof is omitted here for brevity.

[0111] At block 410, the application server (such as IMS AS) may send an indication indicating the priority associated with the data channel of the IMS session, to a first network element of data channel signaling function (DCSF) . As such, the first network element is enabled to perform priority treatment for the data channel, according to the indication.

[0112] In an embodiment, the indication may be transmitted via a second request message for session event control for the data channel. For example, the second request message may be a Nimsas_SessionEventControl_Notify request transmitted via DC1 interface, e.g., the DC1 interface between IMS AS 113 and a DCSF 115 as shown in FIG. 1.

[0113] The indication indicating the priority associated with the data channel of the IMS session may comprise any suitable information, such as a value or a string indicating a level of the priority associated with the data channel.

[0114] In an example, the indication indicating the priority associated with the data channel of the IMS session may be comprised in a payload of the second request message. In an example, an existing DC1 interface defined in 3GPP TS 29.175 may be changed to support priority service for IMS DC, by adding an attribute “resourcePriority” in Nimsas_SessionEventControl Service API of the DC1 interface. For example, the attribute “resourcePriority” may be defined as a type of SessionInfo as shown in Table 1. In this example, the “resourcePriority” is defined per session for IMS data channels.

[0115] Table 1

[0116] In another example, the indication indicating the priority associated with the data channel of the IMS session may be comprised in a header of the second request message. For example, when the session is identified as a MPS session, for a DC1 interface, a 3gpp-Sbi-Message-Priority header may be added to the second request message to indicate a priority associated with a data channel of the MPS session.

[0117] FIG. 5 is a flow chart depicting a method performed at an application server (such as IMS AS) in IMS according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. For some parts which have been described in the above embodiments, the description thereof is omitted here for brevity.

[0118] At block 510, the application server (such as IMS AS) may set a value of differentiated services code point (DSCP) for transmission of an indication indicating the priority associated with the data channel of the IMS session from the application server to the first network element, according to the priority associated with the data channel of the IMS session. DSCP may be set in a transport layer if applicable.

[0119] In an example, the application server may map the priority associated with the data channel of the IMS session to corresponding values of DSCP for the transmission. For example, the following table (Table 2) similar as that recommended by RFC 8837, can be applied to IMS data channel in setting DSCP.

[0120] Table 2

[0121] In this example shown in Table 2, the priority associated with the data channel of the IMS session is indicated by the “Flow Type” column, such as "Very Low" , "Low" , "Medium" , and "High" , signifying relative importance of a flow within the session for an IMS data channel application. The application server (such as IMS AS) may select corresponding value of DSCP from the “Data channel” column, such as LE (1) , DF (0) , AF11, and AF21, and adjust network transport behavior for the transmission accordingly.

[0122] FIG. 6 is a flow chart depicting a method performed at an application server (such as IMS AS) in IMS according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. For some parts which have been described in the above embodiments, the description thereof is omitted here for brevity.

[0123] At block 610, the application server (such as IMS AS) may receive from a first network element of data channel signaling function (DCSF) , a first instruction to handle media for the data  channel, wherein the first instruction comprises an indication indicating a priority associated with the data channel of the IMS session. As such, the application server may perform priority treatment for the data channel, according to the first instruction.

[0124] In an embodiment, the first instruction may instruct the application server (such as IMS AS) how to set a bootstrap data channel or an application data channel. For example, the first instruction may be transmitted through a Nimsas_MediaControl_Notify request or other Nimsas_MediaControl_MediaInstruction operations via DC1 interface, e.g., the DC1 interface between IMS AS 113 and a DCSF 115 as shown in FIG. 1.

[0125] The indication indicating the priority associated with the data channel of the IMS session may comprise any suitable information, such as a value or a string indicating a level of the priority associated with the data channel.

[0126] In an example, the indication indicating the priority associated with the data channel of the IMS session may be comprised in a payload of the second request message. In an example, an existing DC1 interface defined in 3GPP TS 29.175 may be changed to support priority service for IMS DC, by adding an attribute “resourcePriority” in Nimsas_MediaControl Service API of the DC1 interface. For example, the attribute “resourcePriority” may be defined as a type of MediainstructionData as shown in Table 3. In this example, the “resourcePriority” is defined per session for IMS data channels.

[0127] Table 3

[0128] In another example, the indication indicating the priority associated with the data channel of the IMS session may be comprised in a header of the second request message. For example, when the session is identified as a MPS session, for a DC1 interface, a 3gpp-Sbi-Message-Priority header may be added to a message of the first instruction to indicate a priority associated with a data channel of the MPS session.

[0129] FIG. 7 is a flow chart depicting a method performed at an application server (such as IMS AS) in IMS according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. For some parts which have been described in the above embodiments, the description thereof is omitted here for brevity.

[0130] At block 710, the application server (such as IMS AS) may transmit to a second network element of media function (MF) or a third network element of media resource function (MRF) , a second instruction to allocate media resources for the data channel. The second instruction comprises an indication indicating a priority associated with the data channel of the IMS session.

[0131] In an embodiment, the second instruction may instruct the MF or MRF how to allocate and manage media resources for the data channel. For example, the second instruction may be carried in a Nmf_MRM Service request via DC2 interface, e.g., the DC2 interface between IMS AS 113 and a MF 116 as shown in FIG. 1.

[0132] The indication indicating the priority associated with the data channel of the IMS session may comprise any suitable information, such as a value or a string indicating a level of the priority associated with the data channel. In an example, the indication indicating the priority associated with the data channel of the IMS session may be comprised in a payload of a message. Taking a DC2 interface defined in 3GPP TS 29.176 as an example, an existing DC2 interface may be changed to support priority service for IMS DC, by adding an attribute “resourcePriority” in Nmf_MRM Service API of the DC2 interface. For example, the attribute “resourcePriority” may be defined as a type of MediaContext as shown in Table 4. In this example, the “resourcePriority” is defined per session for IMS data channels.

[0133] Table 4

[0134] In another example, the indication indicating the priority associated with the data channel of the IMS session may be comprised in a header of the second request message. For example, when the session is identified as a MPS session, for a DC2 interface, a 3gpp-Sbi-Message-Priority header  may be added to a message of the first instruction to indicate a priority associated with a data channel of the MPS session.

[0135] In an embodiment, the application server (such as IMS AS) may transmit to the second network element (such as MF) or the third network element (such as MRF) , a third instruction to update media resources related to the data channel. The third instruction comprises an indication indicating a priority associated with the data channel of the IMS session. In example, after a bootstrap data channel is established, the IMS AS may request the MF to update media endpoint information of a terminating UE of a call for a bootstrap data channel. In another example, after an application data channel is established, the IMS AS may request the MF to update media endpoint information for the data channel, e.g., media endpoint information of both a terminating UE and a DCAS for an application data channel.

[0136] In an embodiment, the application server (such as IMS AS) may transmit the second instruction and the third instruction according to an instruction from the first network element of data channel signaling function (such as DCSF) , e.g., the first instruction received from the DCSF.

[0137] FIG. 8 is a flow chart depicting a method 800 performed at a network element of data channel signaling function (such as a DCSF) in IMS according to an embodiment of the present disclosure.

[0138] At block 810, the network element of data channel signaling function in IMS, e.g., DCSF 115 shown in FIG. 1, receive from an application server in the IMS (such as an IMS AS) , an indication indicating a priority associated with a data channel to be established within an IMS session.

[0139] In an embodiment, the indication may be received via a second request message for session event control for the data channel of the IMS session. For example, the second request message may be a Nimsas_SessionEventControl_Notify request transmitted via DC1 interface, e.g., the DC1 interface between IMS AS 113 and a DCSF 115 as shown in FIG. 1. The Nimsas_SessionEventControl_Notify request may notify the DCSF of a media change request event for an establishment of a bootstrap data channel or an application data channel. The indication indicating the priority associated with the data channel of the IMS session may be defined as an attribute “resourcePriority” as shown in Table 1.

[0140] At block 820, the network element of data channel signaling function (such as DCSF) provides a control signaling for an establishment of the data channel based on the priority associated with the data channel of the IMS session.

[0141] In an embodiment, a DCSF may decide whether the data channel is allowed to be established during the IMS session, based on the priority associated with the data channel of the IMS session; and provide corresponding control signaling. For example, when network congestion occurs, a data  channel with a higher priority is allowed to be established, while a channel with a lower priority is not allowed to be established. In another embodiment, a DCSF may decide an order of session processing for the data channel, based on the priority associated with the data channel of the IMS session. For example, the DCSF may decide to prioritize session processing for a data channel with a higher priority.

[0142] FIG. 9 is a flow chart depicting a method 900 performed at a network element of data channel signaling function (such as a DCSF) in IMS according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. Block 910 may be implemented as or comprised in block 820 of FIG. 8. For some parts which have been described in the above embodiments, the description thereof is omitted here for brevity.

[0143] At block 910, the network element of data channel signaling function (such as DCSF) may determine a policy about at least one of resource allocation, session processing, signaling transport for the establishment of the data channel, based on the priority associated with the data channel of the IMS session. In this policy, a data channel with a higher priority generally may be prioritized in resource allocation, session processing, signaling transport for the establishment of the data channel.

[0144] In an embodiment, several policies about resource allocation, session processing, signaling transport may be predefined in a standard, e.g., in 3GPP specification. A DCSF may select an appropriate policy for at least one of resource allocation, session processing, signaling transport, based on the priority associated with the data channel of the IMS session.

[0145] FIG. 10 is a flow chart depicting a method 1000 performed at a network element of data channel signaling function (such as a DCSF) in IMS according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. For some parts which have been described in the above embodiments, the description thereof is omitted here for brevity.

[0146] At block 1010, the network element of data channel signaling function (such as DCSF) may may transmit to the application server (such as IMS AS) , a first instruction to handle media for the data channel, wherein the first instruction comprises an indication indicating a priority associated with the data channel of the IMS session. The priority associated with the data channel of the IMS session may be obtained from the IMS AS in a simas shown in block 810.

[0147] In an embodiment, the first instruction may instruct the application server (such as IMS AS) how to set a bootstrap data channel or an application data channel. 1. In an example, an existing DC1 interface  may be changed to support priority service for IMS DC, by adding an attribute “resourcePriority” in Nimsas_MediaControl Service API of the DC1 interface, as shown in Table 3.

[0148] FIG. 11 is a flow chart depicting a method 1100 performed at a network element of data channel signaling function (such as a DCSF) in IMS according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. For some parts which have been described in the above embodiments, the description thereof is omitted here for brevity.

[0149] At block 1110, the network element of data channel signaling function (such as DCSF) may transmit to another application server for data channels (such as DCAS) , a third request message for establishment of the data channel. The third request message may comprise an indication indicating the priority associated with the data channel. The priority associated with the data channel of the IMS session may be obtained from an IMS AS as shown in block 810.

[0150] In an example, a DCSF may interact with a DCAS for DC resource control via DC4 / DC3. The third request message may be transmitted for requesting an establishment of an application data channel, so that the establishment of the application data channel may be performed based on the priority associated with the data channel. The indication indicating the priority associated with the data channel of the IMS session may be comprised in a header or a payload of the third request message.

[0151] FIG. 12 is a flow chart depicting a method 1200 performed at a network element of media function (such as MF) in IMS according to an embodiment of the present disclosure.

[0152] At block 1210, the network element of media function in IMS, such as MF or MRF shown in FIG. 1, receives from an application server in the IMS (such as an IMS AS) , a second instruction to allocate media resources for a data channel to be established within the IMS session. The second instruction comprises an indication indicating the priority associated with the data channel. In this regard, the priority may be defined per data channel.

[0153] In an embodiment, the second instruction may instruct the MF how to allocate and manage media resources for the data channel. For example, the second instruction may be carried in a Nmf_MRM Service request via DC2 interface, e.g., the DC2 interface between IMS AS 113 and a MF 116 as shown in FIG. 1. For example, an attribute “resourcePriority” in Nmf_MRM Service API of a DC2 interface may be added to indicate the priority associated with the data channel, as shown in Table 4.

[0154] At block 1220, the network element of media function in IMS, such as MF or MRF shown in FIG. 1, allocates media resources for the data channel based on the priority associated with the data  channel of the IMS session. Then, the allocated media resources would be reserved for the data channel.

[0155] In some embodiment, the MF / MRF may perform processes relation to at least one of resource allocation, session processing, signaling transport for an establishment of the data channel, based on the priority associated with the data channel of the IMS session. For example, the MF / MRF may prioritize resource allocation, session processing, signaling transport for a data channel with a higher priority over a data channel with a lower priority within a same session.

[0156] FIG. 13 is a flow chart depicting a method 1300 performed at a network element of media function (such as MF) in IMS according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. For some parts which have been described in the above embodiments, the description thereof is omitted here for brevity.

[0157] At block 1310, the network element of media function (such as MF or MRF) may receive from an application server in IMS (such as IMS AS) , a third instruction to update media resources related to a data channel. The third instruction comprises an indication indicating a priority associated with the data channel of the IMS session.

[0158] In an embodiment, Nmf_MRM_Update service operation may be used to update existing media endpoints. In an example, after a bootstrap data channel is established, the MF / MRF may be requested by the IMS AS to update media endpoint information of a terminating UE of a call for a bootstrap data channel. In another example, after an application data channel is established, the MF / MRF may be requested by the IMS AS to update media endpoint information of both a terminating UE and a DCAS for the application data channel.

[0159] At block 1320, the network element of media function (such as MF or MRF) may update media resources related to the data channel based on the priority associated with the data channel of the IMS session. For example, a MF can use a latest priority of the data channel for processing and update a DSCP for existing media resource / endpoint.

[0160] In an embodiment, the priority associated with the data channel of the IMS session may be defined separately from other channels within the IMS session. In an embodiment, the priority associated with the data channel of the IMS session may be defined relative to data channels within other IMS sessions.

[0161] FIG. 14 is a flow chart depicting a method 1400 performed at a network element of media function (such as MF) in IMS according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. For some parts which have been described in the above embodiments, the description thereof is omitted here for brevity.

[0162] At block 1410, the network element of media function (such as MF or MRF) may set a value of differentiated services code point (DSCP) for transmission of the data channel after the data channel is established, according to the priority associated with the data channel of the IMS session. The priority associated with the data channel of the IMS session may be obtained from an IMS AS as shown in block 1210 or block 1310.

[0163] In an example, the MF or MRF may map the priority associated with the data channel of the IMS session to corresponding values of DSCP for the transmission. For example, a mapping between the priority of the data channel and values of DSCP as shown in Table 2 can be applied to IMS data channel in setting DSCP. The MF or MRF may select an appropriate value of DSCP according to the mapping, and adjust network transport behavior for the transmission of the established data channel accordingly.

[0164] FIG. 15 is a flow chart depicting a method 1500 performed at another application server (such as DC application server) in IMS according to an embodiment of the present disclosure.

[0165] At block 1510, the DC application server, e.g., DCAS 118 shown in FIG. 1, receives from a network element of data channel signaling function (such as DCSF) in the IMS, a third request message for establishment of a data channel within an IMS session. The third request message comprises an indication indicating the priority associated with the data channel of the IMS session.

[0166] In an example, the third request message may be received via DC4 or DC3 interface from a DCSF. The indication indicating the priority associated with the data channel of the IMS session may be comprised in a header or a payload of the third request message.

[0167] At block 1520, the DC application server handles data channel traffic for the data channel, based on the priority associated with the data channel of the IMS session. As such, the establishment of the application data channel may be prioritized by the DC application server.

[0168] In an embodiment, the DC application server may perform processes relation to at least one of resource allocation, session processing, signaling transport for the establishment of the data channel, based on the priority associated with the data channel of the IMS session. The indication indicating the priority associated with the data channel of the IMS session may be comprised in a header or a payload of the third request message.

[0169] In an embodiment, the priority associated with the data channel of the IMS session may be defined separately from other channels within the IMS session. In an embodiment, the priority associated with the data channel of the IMS session may be defined relative to data channels within other IMS sessions.

[0170] FIG. 16 is a flow chart depicting a method 1600 performed at another application server (such as DC application server) in IMS according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. For some parts which have been described in the above embodiments, the description thereof is omitted here for brevity.

[0171] At block 1610, the DC application server may set a value of differentiated services code point (DSCP) for transmission of the data channel after the data channel is established, according to the priority associated with the data channel of the IMS session. The priority associated with the data channel of the IMS session may be received from a DCSF as shown at block 1510.

[0172] In an embodiment, the data channel may be an application data channel.

[0173] In an example, the DC application server may map the priority associated with the data channel of the IMS session to corresponding values of DSCP for the transmission. For example, a mapping between the priority of the data channel and values of DSCP as shown in Table 2 can be applied to IMS data channel in setting DSCP. The DC application server may select an appropriate value of DSCP according to the mapping, and adjust network transport behavior for the transmission of the established data channel accordingly.

[0174] FIG. 17 illustrates an exemplary signaling procedure for a call flow of IMS DC with multimedia priority according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. The exemplary signaling procedure is based on a bootstrap data channel setup signaling procedure of 3GPP TS 23.228, the entire contents of which are incorporated here by reference.

[0175] At step 1701, UE#1 initiates a call by sending a SIP INVITE request with an initial SDP to the IMS AS (e.g., IMS AS 113) , through P-CSCF and S-CSCF in an originating IMS network. The initial SDP contains offers for a bootstrap data channel establishment request with bootstrap DC stream identity (ID) . In this example procedure, the SDP contains both bootstrap data channel offers for originating side and terminating side.

[0176] At step 1702, the IMS AS (e.g., IMS AS 113) determinates that the call is a MPS call for IMS DC, and optionally authenticates the MPS call. IMS AS validates user subscription data to determine whether the data channel call request should be notified to DCSF.

[0177] If the IMS AS determined, based on the user profile, that data channel call request needs to be notified to DCSF, the IMS AS selects a DCSF for this user based on local configuration or discovery and selection of a DCSF instance via NRF. If the IMS AS determined, based on the user profile, that the data channel call request need not to be notified to DCSF, or DCSF decides that DC request is not allowed, the IMS AS proceeds with normal IMS procedures to setup the MMTel  session without performing Data Channel bootstrapping, by deleting DC related media information and sending the updated SIP INVITE to the originating S-CSCF.

[0178] At step 1703, the IMS AS notifies a DCSF (e.g., DCSF 115 shown in FIG. 1) of the DC call event by sending Nimsas_SessionEventControl_Notify (SessionEstablishmentRequestEvent, Session ID, Calling ID, Called ID, Session Case, Event initiator, Media InfoList, DC Stream ID) request to the DCSF. In an embodiment, an indication of priority associated with the data channel, e.g., a resource priority, is also included in the request when the call has multimedia priority service. In an embodiment, the priority may be also applied on the transport of the request by the IMS AS by setting a corresponding DSCP value for the transport according to the priority.

[0179] At step 1704, after receiving the DC control request, the DCSF determines a policy about how to process the bootstrap data channel establishment request based on the related parameters in the Data Channel control request (e.g. CallingID, CalledID, DC Stream ID) and / or DCSF service specific policy. In an embodiment, the DCSF provides priority treatment to the session request when the resource priority is identified. In this regard, the DCSF would handle the session request, and provide control signaling for the establishment of the data channel based on the priority associated with the data channel.

[0180] At step 1705, since the SessionEstablishmentRequestEvent indicates that served user is offered local bootstrap media, DCSF, based on its policies reserves originating side MDC1 media information, as well as the terminating side MDC1 remote bootstrap media (targeting remote UE) , which are used to receive UE request for application downloading from MF or MRF (e.g., MF / MRF 116 shown in FIG. 1) .

[0181] At step 1706, the DCSF invokes the Nimsas_MediaControl_MediaInstruction (Session ID, Media Instruction Set) operation based on its policies instructing the IMS AS how to set up bootstrap data channel with MF both for originating and terminating side. The MediaInstructionSet provided by the DSCF, includes its MDC1 media endpoint addresses created in step 1705, DC Stream ID, and the replacement HTTP URL representing the application list offered via the MDC1 interface. The priority associated with the data channel, e.g., resource priority, may be also included when the call session has a resource priority.

[0182] In this scenario, the DCSF instructs the IMS AS to terminate bootstrap data channel establishment request on originating MF, and initiate remote bootstrap data channel establishment request (targeting remote UE) as well as forwarding remote bootstrap data channel establishment request of served user (targeting remote DCSF) towards terminating network.

[0183] At step 1707, the IMS AS selects a MF based on local configuration or discovers and selects a MF instance or MRF supporting DC media function via NRF.

[0184] At step 1708, IMS AS invokes Nmf_MRM_Create (List of Media Termination Descriptors) service operation to instruct MF to allocate required data channel media resources. IMS AS requests creation of two different Media Terminations, one representing the local bootstrap media to be terminated and the other representing the remote bootstrap media to be offered to remote UE. Each Media Termination includes information required to allocate resources in both Mb and the MDC1 interfaces. The MF responds with the negotiated data channel media resource information to IMS AS. If MRF is used, IMS AS uses Mr' / Cr to the MRF to reserve data channel media resources. In an embodiment, a priority associated with the data channel, e.g., resource priority may be also included when the call has multimedia priority service for IMS data channel. The MF or MRF shall allocate media resources based on the resource priority.

[0185] At step 1709, the IMS AS responds to the MediaInstruction request received in step 1706. The response may include the atomic success result of operation and the negotiated data channel media resource information for MDC1.

[0186] At step 1710, the DCSF stores the media resource information and responds to the Notify Request received in step 1703.

[0187] At steps 1711-1713, the IMS AS sends the INVITE which includes the updated SDP offer adding media information of MF or MRF via the originating S-CSCF to remote network side and UE#2. In this scenario, the SDP offer for bootstrap data channel to UE#2 is included.

[0188] At step 1714, UE#2 and terminating network returns an 18X response with the SDP answer to bootstrap data channel to originating network. According to the received SDP answer, IMS AS may instruct MF or MRF to update data channel media resource information for UE#2.

[0189] At steps 1715-1716, UE#2 and terminating network returns a 200 OK response.

[0190] At step 1717, the IMS AS notifies the successful session establishment event, Nimsas_SessionEventControl Notify (SessionEstablishmentSuccessEvent, Session ID, Media Info List) to DCSF.

[0191] At step 1718, the DCSF responds to the Nimsas notification request.

[0192] At step 1719, 200 OK forwarded to UE#1 which indicates the bootstrap data channel has been established.

[0193] At steps 1720-1723, the bootstrap data channels have been established between originating MF or MRF and UE#1 / UE#2. The UEs send application request messages to MF or MRF to request a data channel application or an application list if multiple DC applications are available, via the established bootstrap data channel with its data channel capabilities. The MF or MRF replaces the root URL with the replacement URL received in steps 1708 and forwards the message to received media point of DCSF. The DCSF provides the application list and proper data channel applications further to UE#1 and UE#2 based on their data channel capabilities and their choices through MF or MRF.

[0194] The bootstrap data channels have also been established between terminating MF or MRF and UE#1 / UE#2. Then, a data channel application is requested and downloaded to UE#1 and UE#2 from terminating DCSF through terminating MF or MRF.

[0195] In an embodiment, when the bootstrap data channels have also been established, e.g., after steps 1720-1, 1721-1, 1722-1 and 1723, the MF or MRF may set DSCP with priority on transport on the bootstrap data channels when the resource priority is applied to the data channel connection. In this regard, a value of DSCP may be set to correspond to the resource priority.

[0196] Steps at steps 1720-1723 may be executed after step 1714, if the SDP answer in 200 OK to the PRACK and UPDATE messages contain the information required to establish bootstrap data channels.

[0197] At step 1724, subsequent procedures continue.

[0198] FIG. 18 illustrates another exemplary signaling procedure for a call flow of IMS DC with multimedia priority according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. The exemplary signaling procedure is based on Person-to-Application (P2A) application data channel setup signaling procedure of 3GPP TS 23.228, the entire contents of which are incorporated here by reference.

[0199] At step 1800, an IMS session and a bootstrap data channel have been established. Selected data channel application (s) have been downloaded to UE#1 and possibly UE#2.

[0200] At step 1801, UE#1 sends a SIP reINVITE request with an updated SDP to IMS AS (e.g., IMS AS 113) , through originating network P-CSCF and S-CSCF. The updated SDP contains the bootstrap data channel information, as well as the requested application data channel and the associated DC application binding information.

[0201] At step 1802, the IMS AS determinates the call is a MPS call for IMS DC, and optionally authenticates the MPS call. The IMS AS validates user subscription data to determine whether the media change request event should be notified to a DCSF (e.g., DCSF 115 shown in FIG. 1) .

[0202] At step 1803, the IMS AS may notify the DCSF, via Nimsas_SessionEventControl_Notify (MediaChangeRequest Event, Session ID, Event Direction, Event initiator, Media Info List) of the media change request event.

[0203] At step 1804, after receiving the session event notification, the DCSF determines the policy about how to process the application data channel establishment request based on the related parameters (i.e. associated DC application binding information) in the notification and / or DCSF service specific policy. The DCSF may provide priority treatment to the session request when the priority associated with the data channel (e.g., resource priority) is identified. In this regard, the DCSF would handle the session request, and provide control signaling for the establishment of the data channel based on the resource priority.

[0204] At step 1805, the DCSF determines that the added Application Data Channel media of the offer takes DC Application Server as target endpoint and requires to anchor in the MF or MRF (e.g., MF / MRF 116 shown in FIG. 1) .

[0205] At step 1806, the DCSF invokes Nimsas_MediaControl service operation to instruct IMS AS to terminate the media flow of the originating UE to MF. The instruction also includes information to be consumed by the MF that the data channel media shall be relayed via the MDC2 interface. The resource priority may be also included in the instruction when the call session has a resource priority.

[0206] At step 1807, the IMS AS invokes Nmf_MRM_Create (List of Media Termination Descriptors) service operation to instruct MF on application data channel establishment and data channel media resource reservation based on the DC media information received from DCSF. If MRF is used, IMS AS uses Mr' / Cr to MRF to reserve data channel media resources. The resource priority is also included when the call has multimedia priority service. The MF or MRF shall allocate media resources based on the resource priority.

[0207] At step 1808, the IMS AS notifies the MediaControl instruction control response to DCSF.

[0208] At step 1809, the DCSF stores the media resource information and sends a P2A application data channel establishment request (including the MDC2 media resource received from MF / MRF) to a DC Application Server (e.g., DCAS 118 shown in FIG. 1) via DC3 / DC4. The resource priority is also included when the call session has resource priority.

[0209] At step 1810, the DC Application Server accepts the P2A application data channel establishment request, returning an MDC2 reserved media resource as answer and is prepared for UE#1 traffic through MDC2. The DC Application Server may provide priority treatment to the invocation signaling when the resource priority is identified.

[0210] At step 1811, the DCSF requests IMS AS to update the MF / MRF resource with MDC2 media endpoint information of DC Application Server.

[0211] At step 1812, the IMS AS updates the MF / MRF resource. In an embodiment, the resource priority is also included when the call session has resource priority for IMS DC.

[0212] At step 1813, the IMS AS notifies the MediaControl instruction control response to DCSF.

[0213] At step 1814, the DCSF replies to the notification received in step 1813.

[0214] At step 1815-1816, the IMS AS sends the re-INVITE to remote network side and UE#2, via the originating S-CSCF, which does not include application data channel request in the SDP for the application data channel.

[0215] At step 1817-1819: UE#2 and terminating network returns a 200 OK response with SDP answer for audio / video.

[0216] At step 1820, the IMS AS notifies the DCSF about the successful result of the MediaChangeRequest event.

[0217] At step 1821, the DCSF replies to the notification.

[0218] At step 1822-1823, the IMS AS includes SDP answer for application data channels to UE#1 in 200 OK response and sends 200 OK response to S-CSCF and P-CSCF.

[0219] At step 1824, the originating network P-CSCF executes QoS procedure for application data channel media based on the SDP answer information from the 200 OK response.

[0234] It should be appreciated that at least some aspects of the exemplary embodiments of the disclosures may be embodied in computer-executable instructions, such as in one or more program modules, executed by one or more computers or other devices. Generally, program modules include routines, programs, objects, components, data structures, etc. that perform particular tasks or implement particular abstract data types when executed by a processor in a computer or other device. The computer executable instructions may be stored on a computer readable medium, for example, non-transitory computer readable medium, such as a hard disk, optical disk, removable storage media, solid state memory, RAM, etc. As will be appreciated by one of skills in the art, the function of the program modules may be combined or distributed as desired in various embodiments. In addition, the function may be embodied in whole or in part in firmware or hardware equivalents such as integrated circuits, field programmable gate arrays (FPGA) , and the like.

[0235] Further, while operations are depicted in a particular order, this should not be understood as requiring that such operations be performed in the particular order shown or in sequential order, or that all illustrated operations be performed, to achieve desirable results. In certain circumstances, multitasking and parallel processing may be advantageous. Likewise, while several specific implementation details are contained in the above discussions, these should not be construed as limitations on the scope of the present disclosure, but rather as descriptions of features that may be specific to particular embodiments. Certain features that are described in the context of separate embodiments may also be implemented in combination in a single embodiment. Conversely, various features that are described in the context of a single embodiment may also be implemented in multiple embodiments separately or in any suitable sub-combination.

[0236] Even though the invention has been described above with reference to an example according to the accompanying drawings, it is clear that the invention is not restricted thereto but may be modified in several ways within the scope of the appended claims. Therefore, all words and  expressions should be interpreted broadly and they are intended to illustrate, not to restrict, the embodiment. It will be obvious to a person skilled in the art that, as technology advances, the inventive concept may be implemented in various ways. Further, it is clear to a person skilled in the art that the described embodiments may, but are not required to, be combined with other embodiments in various ways.
