[0001] The present invention relates to a pillow for providing ventilation during sleep. Especially, the invention relates to a pillow which has arrangements of perforations to provide ventilation during use. State of the Art:

[0002] Optimal sleep is important to long-term health. Comfort is a major factor in ensuring one receives an adequate night's sleep and, as such, using a pillow which is specifically shaped to provide support for the human head, face, and neck is important to achieving sufficient comfort to facilitate a good night's sleep.

[0003] The increasing recognition of the importance the pillow plays in the quality of sleep and by extension overall health has led to an emphasis on the development of shaped memory foam pillows which are complimentary to the shape of the neck, face, and head. For example, the Omnia Pillow as shown in Hague InternationalDesign No. DM / 100232 and Russian Utility Model No. 2017504403 / 49 claiming the original design.

[0004] The right thermo climate has a positive impact on the quality of human sleep as overheating of the human body during sleep, in particular the head, may lead to excessive tossing and turning, sweating, and disrupted sleep and hence a poorer quality of sleep. Therefore, a further factor that is of significance in ensuring a good night's sleep, is that the pillow provides adequate ventilation to the user so as to mitigate the user's sweat build-up whilst they sleep by reducing overheating by aiding in the dissipation of moisture and thus also maintaining improved comfort. As such, the perforation of pillows is a further factor contributing to intelligent pillow design. Furthermore, perforations also aid in reducing post-sleep facial puffiness / swelling when one sleeps on their side.Statement of Invention:

[0005] Accordingly, the present invention is directed to a pillow wherein secHons of the pillow possess an arrangement of perforations located to assist the ventilation effect to dissipate moisture build up and aid in comfort for the user, comprising:perforations located in the area where the vertex would be in contact with the pillow when the user is sleeping on their back, perforations located in the area where the cheek would be in contact with the pillow when the user is sleeping on their side, - perforations located in the area where the eyes would be in contact with the pillow when the user is sleeping on their side, perforations located in the area where the forehead would be in contact with the pillow when the user is sleeping on their side, perforations located in the area where the chin and jaw would be in contact with the pillow when the user is sleeping on their side, the remaining surface of the pillow will not include perforations.

[0006] In a preferred embodiment, the perforations located in the area where the vertex would be in contact with the pillow when the user is sleeping on their back, would be arranged in a circle within a recess where the vertex would rest with two curved lines of perforations which are complimentarily concentric with the circle of perforations such that there is one curved concentric line of perforations on the left side and one curved concentric line of perforations on the right side of the inside ofthe circle of perforations which make up approximately half of the circumference of a smaller interior circle such that there are no perforations in the remaining interior surface area of the circle of perforations inside the recess.

[0048] Figure 1 shows a pillow 10 according to the invention in a first configuration of perforations comprising of a memory foam material which has a purposefully designed shape to increase comfort and reduce sleep induced wrinkles. The pillow's 10 overall shape is largely rectangular such that the longest sides of the pillow 10 are its bottom 11 and top sides 13 which run transversely along the pillow whilst the short sides are the left 15 and right side 17 of the pillow 10 which rim longitudinally along the pillow 10. When reference is made to the left hand side 15 and right hand side 17 of the pillow 10 in this specification, that refers to the left 15 and right 17 as would be perceived from the orientation of one looking down at the pillow 10 as inFigure 1. The edges of the pillow 10 are not flat and are slightly concave on the left 15 and right side 17 of the pillow 10 and also the bottom 11 and top sides 13 of the pillow 10 are also concave but with a more substantial inwards curvature than the left 15 and right sides 17. At the centre of the pillow 10 there is a concave recess 12 which is intended to cradle the vertex of the head to provide head support when one is lying on their back. Between the concave recess 12 and bottom 11 side of the pillow10 there is a slight valley-like structure which decreases in elevation from theconcave recess 12 to the bottom 11 side of the pillow. This is referred to as the neck support valley 14 and is intended to support the neck such that the valley floor runs longitudinally along the central longitudinal axis of the pillow from the bottom 11 side to the concave recess 12 and the neck of the user is intended to rest along the valley floor. The bottom side 11 of the pillow is shaped such that the elevation of the pillow increases from the neck support valley 14 on each side until the elevation reaches an apex close to the bottom left and right edges of the pillow 10 and then the elevation deceases harshly to the bottom left 15 and right 17 edges. At the top 13 side of the pillow 10 there is a similar structure at the left and right sides as to that of the bottom left elevated ridge 20 and the bottom right elevated ridge 22. Thus, the lowest point along the top 13 side of the user surface of the pillow is the top centre of the pillow lO.The user surface of the pillow 11 elevates progressively to the top left 15 and rightsides 17 of the pillow 10 such that the apex is close to the top left and right edges of the pillow 10 and then the elevation decreases harshly to the top 13 left 15 and right17 edges. This elevated position at the top 13 left 15 and right 17 of the pillow 10 serves as the upper left elevated ridge 16 and upper right elevated ridge 18 which serve as head support bolsters to the user when sleeping. The bottom elevated ridges20, 22 have a longitudinal width which is approximately 4 / 5 of the upper elevated ridges 16, 18. On the centre left 15 and centre right 17 portions of the pillow 10 there is a left step-like structure 19 and right step-like structure 21 respectively such that there is a recess on the centre left 15 and centre right 17 sides of the pillow 10 between their respective upper elevated ridge 16, 18 and bottom elevated ridge 20, 22 and these recesses have a very low profile where they are adjacent to the sides 15, 17 of the pillow 10 but then there is a stepped elevation in profile within the recess approximately 3 / 5 of the way towards the concave recess 12 at the centre of the pillow 10 as one looks from the respective side 15, 17 of the pillow 10 to the centre of the pillow 10. The elevation from this step-like structure 19, 21 then increases a further time to create a thin apex between the stepped recess and the concave recess12 on the left 15 and right 17 hand sides of the pillow 10. This step-like recessstructure serves as a left face cradle 24 and a right face cradle 26 such that when one sleeps on their right their face would be supported by the left face cradle 24 and when one sleeps on their left their face would be supported by the right face cradle 26.

[0049] In the embodiment shown in Figure 1 , around the inside edges of the concave recess 12 there is single complimentary circle of perforations 28 spaced evenly apart and within this circle of perforations 28 is a left concentric curved line of perforations 30 inside of the circle of perforations 28 and a symmetrical right concentric curved line of perforations 32 which are both concentric with their respective inside of the circle of perforations 28 and are mostly transverse in orientation except for their concentric curvature. This arrangement of perforations are referred to as the bottom left cheek perforations 34 and bottom right cheek perforations 36 and these aid in ventilation to the jawline / cheek area which is in contact with the bottom left elevated ridge 20 if one sleeps on their right and the bottom right elevated ridge 22 if one sleeps on their left and, as such, is in contact with the arrangement of the perforations. At the top left elevated ridge 16 and top right elevated ridge 18 there are perforations evenly spaced apart forming two concentric lines of evenly spaced perforations such that the lines of perforations curve upwards from their left and right sides in a complimentary shape to the curvature of their respective top left elevated ridge 16 and top right elevated ridge 18 just above the left face cradle 24 and right face cradle 26 and the arrangement of perforations forms a bean-like shaped outline which widens gradually as the shape extends along the elevated ridge 16, 18towards the edge of the pillow 10. The arrangement of perforations on the step-like structure 19, 21 of the left face cradle 24 and right face cradle 26 are symmetrical such that the lines curve towards the centre of the pillow10 from the top and bottom of both concentric lines. The arrangement of perforations on the step-like structure 19, 21 of the face cradle aid in ventilation to the cheek bone / centre cheek area which is in contact with the left face cradle 24 when one sleeps on their right side and in contact with the right face cradle 26 when one sleeps on their left side. The arrangement of perforations on the left step-like structure 19 of the left face cradle 24 are referred to as the left face cradle perforations 42 and the arrangement of perforations on the right step-like structure 21 of the right face cradle26 are referred to as the right face cradle perforations 44. The pillow 10 is thus symmetrical when comparing its left half and right half in terms of both structure and the arrangement and location of perforations. All perforations of the pillow are preferably approximately 5 mm in diameter. The perforations within the embodiments described in all the Figures, are approximately vertical in their orientation but, naturally, this orientation will be altered when the areas of the pillow10 are depressed by the weight of the user during use. Furthermore, all the perforations penetrate through the pillow 10 to the underside of the pillow 10.Therefore, whilst not displayed in the Figures, naturally the underside of the pillow 10 will have perforations which mirror those to the user surface given that these perforations are simply the other side of the perforations from the user surface.

However, where the curved lines of perforations 628, 629 meet the straight longitudinal lines of perforations 630, 632 there is a gap lacking a single perforation at each location where one would be expected to exist based on the even order of the perforations such that there are, therefore, four such symmetrical gaps lacking perforations as seen in Figure 5 and Figure 6. Within the concave recess 612 and to the left and in parallel with the straight longitudinal line of perforations 630 is a shorter left exterior longitudinal line of perforations 631 which is shorter by approximately one perforation's space and this shorter left exterior longitudinal line of perforations 631 is situated such that its centre aligns with the centre of the largerinterior left straight longitudinal line of perforations 630. There is also a shorter right exterior longitudinal line of perforations 633 in parallel to the right of the longer right interior longitudinal line of perforations 632 which is entirely symmetrical to that of the arrangement of the shorter left exterior longitudinal line of perforations 631 in the same way as is true for the structure and arrangement of perforations for all embodiments of the pillow according to the invention when one compares the left and right sides of the pillow 610. All perforations preferably have a diameter of approximately 5 mm.

Claims

Claims1 . A pillow wherein sections of the pillow possess an arrangement of perforations located to assist the ventilation effect to dissipate moisture build up and aid in comfort for the user , comprising : perforations located in the area where the vertex would be in contact with the pillow when the user is sleeping on their back, perforations located in the area where the cheek would be in contact with the pillow when the user is sleeping on their side , perforations located in the area where the eyes would be in contact with the pillow when the user is sleeping on their side , perforations located in the area where the forehead would be in contact with the pillow when the user is sleeping on their side ,perforations located in the area where the chin and j aw would be in contact with the pillow when the user is sleeping on their side , the remaining surface of the pillow will not include perforations .2 . A pillow of Claim 1 , wherein the perforations located in the area where the vertex would be in contact with the pillow when the user is sleeping on their back, would be arranged in a circle within a recess where the vertex would rest with two curved lines of perforations which are complimentarily concentric with the circle of perforations such that there is one curved concentric line of perforations on the left side and one curved concentric line of perforations on the right side of the inside of the circle of perforations which make up approximately half of the circumference of a smaller interior circle such that there are no perforations in the remaining interior surface area of the circle of perforations inside the recess .3 . A pillow according to Claim 1 or 2 , wherein the perforations located in the area of the left and right sides of the pillowfor ventilation of the forehead and eyes would be arranged as complementary perforations along the top left and right of the pillow so as to align with the side of the forehead dependent on which side the user is sleeping on . 4 . A pillow according to any preceding claim, wherein the perforations located in the area of the left and right sides of the pillow for ventilation of the bottom of the cheeks would be arranged as complementary perforations along the bottom left and right of the pillow so as to align with the bottom of the cheek along the j awline dependent on which side the user is sleeping on .5 . A pillow according to any preceding claim, wherein the perforations located in the area of the left and right sides of the pillow for ventilation of the centre of the cheeks would be arranged as complementary perforations along the centre left and centre right of the pillow so as to align with the sides of the cheek along the cheek bone dependent on which side the user is sleeping on .6 . A pillow according to any preceding claim, wherein the perforations located in the area of the left and right sides of the pillow for ventilation of the forehead and eyes would be arranged as a bean-like shaped outline which curves upwards and widens gradually as the shape extends along a top elevated ridge towards the edge of the pillow .7 . A pillow according to any preceding claim, wherein the perforations located in the area of the left and right sides of the pillow for ventilation of the bottom of the cheeks would be arranged as a bean-like shaped outline which curves downwards and widens gradually as the shape extends along a bottom elevated ridge towards the edge of the pillow .8 . A pillow according to any preceding claim, wherein the perforations located in the area of the left and right sides of the pillow for ventilation of the forehead and eyes would be arranged as any number of concentric upwardly curved lines of complimentary perforations at the top left and right of the pillow such that they curve in a complimentary shape to that ofa human forehead' s curvature around the eye socket as viewed from a side profile perspective .9 . A pillow according to any preceding claim, wherein the perforations located in the area of the left and right sides of the pillow for ventilation of the bottom of the cheeks would be arranged as any number of concentric downwardly curved lines of complementary perforations at the bottom left and right of the pillow such that they curve in a complimentary shape to that of the curvature of the bottom of a human' s cheek along the j awline as viewed from a side profile perspective .10 . A pillow according to any preceding claim, wherein the perforations located in the area of the left and right sides of the pillow for ventilation of the centre of the cheeks would be arranged as any number of concentric curved lines of complementary perforations at the centre left and centre right of the pillow such that they curve inwards towards the direction of the centre of the pillow and are in a complimentary shape to that of the curvature of a human' s cheek bone as viewed from a side profile perspective .11 . A pillow according to any preceding claim, wherein the perforations located in the area of the left and right sides of the pillow for ventilation of the forehead and eyes would be arranged as two concentric curved lines of complimentary perforations at the top left and right of the pillow such that they curve upwards in a complimentary shape to that of a human forehead' s curvature around the eye socket as viewed from a side profile perspective .12 . A pillow according to any preceding claim, wherein the perforations located in the area of the left and right sides of the pillow for ventilation of the bottom of the cheeks would be arranged as two concentric downwardly curved lines of complementary perforations at the bottom left and right of the pillow such that they curve in a complimentary shape to that of the curvature bottom of a human' s cheek along the j awline as viewed from a side profile perspective .13 . A pillow according to any preceding claim, wherein the perforations located in the area of the left and right sides of the pillow for ventilation of the centre of the cheeks would bearranged as two concentric curved lines of complementary perforations at the centre left and centre right of the pillow such that they curve inwards towards the direction of the centre of the pillow and in a complimentary shape to that of the curvature of a human' s cheek bone as viewed from a side profile perspective .14 . A pillow according to any preceding claim, wherein the perforations located in the area where the vertex would be in contact with the pillow when the user is sleeping on their back, would be arranged in a circle within a recess where the vertex would rest with two complimentary semi circles of perforations on the inside of the circle which fit into the left side and right side of the inside of the circle of perforations .15 . A pillow according to any preceding claim, wherein the perforations located in the area where the vertex would be in contact with the pillow when the user is sleeping on their back, would be arranged in a circle within a recess where the vertex would rest with two longitudinal lines of perforations insidethe circle of perforations with one on the left side and one on the right side .16 . A pillow according to any of Claims 1 to 14 , wherein the perforations located in the area where the vertex would be in contact with the pillow when the user is sleeping on their back, would be arranged with two sets of parallel longitudinal lines of perforations such that there would be two parallel longitudinal lines of perforations on the left side and two parallel longitudinal lines of perforations on the right side of the recess with the inside line of each pair being j oined by one curved line of perforations at their bottom and one curved line of perforations at their top which connect to the inside longitudinal line on the other side and are complimentary in their curvature to the curvature of the concave recess .17 . A pillow according to any of the preceding claim, wherein the perforations located in the area where the vertex would be in contact with the pillow when the user is sleeping on their back, would be arranged in a circle within a recess where thevertex would rest with a smaller circle of perforations inside the first circle of perforations .18 . A pillow according to any of claims 1 to 14 , 16 , or 17 , wherein the perforations located in the area where the vertex would be in contact with the pillow when the user is sleeping on their back, would be arranged with two sets of parallel longitudinal lines of perforations such that there would be two parallel longitudinal lines of perforations on the left and two parallel longitudinal lines of perforations on the right of the recess with the inside line of each pair being j oined by a curved line of perforations at their bottom and top which connect to the inside longitudinal line on the other side and which are complimentary in their curvature to the curvature of the concave recess and inside this arrangement of perforations would be a circle of perforations .19 . A pillow according to any of claims 1 to 14 , or 16 to 18 , wherein the perforations located in the area where the vertex would be in contact with the pillow when the user is sleeping on their back, would be arranged with two sets of parallellongitudinal lines of perforations such that there would be two parallel longitudinal lines of perforations on the left side and two parallel longitudinal lines of perforations on the right side of the recess with the inside line of each pair being j oined by a curved line of perforations at their bottom and top which connect to the inside longitudinal line on the other side and are complimentary in their curvature to the curvature of the concave recess and inside this arrangement of perforations would be two curved transverse lines of perforations with one curved transverse line in the top half and one curved transverse line in the bottom half of the concave recess such that the two transverse lines are surrounded by the arrangement of the other perforations within the recess and these two transverse lines of perforations would be symmetrical with one another and curve away from each other such that the transverse line in the hop half of the recess curves upwards and the transverse line in the bottom half of the recess curves downwards .20 . A pillow according to any preceding claim, wherein the arrangement of perforations of the present invention would beapplied to the user surface of a pillow comprising of a central concave recess for resting the vertex with a longitudinal valleylike structure for supporting the neck, an elevated ridge at each of the four corners of the pillow and a left and right side step-like recess for cradling the side of the face between the upper elevated ridge for supporting the forehead and bottom elevated ridge for supporting the cheeks and j awline .21 . A pillow according to any preceding claim, wherein any number of the perforations would be approximately 5 mm in diameter . 22 . A pillow according to any preceding claim, wherein any number of the perforations would be between approximately 2 mm in diameter and approximately 6 mm in diameter .23 . A pillow according to any preceding claim, wherein the perforated pillow would be comprised of any number of perforations which are approximately 3 mm in diameter and any number of perforations would be 6 mm in diameter .24 . A pillow according to any preceding claim, wherein the perforated pillow would be comprised of polyurethane .25 . A pillow according to any preceding claim, wherein the perforated pillow would be comprised of latex .
