Description

TWO-COMPONENT POLYURETHANE COMPOSITIONS, AND STRUCTURAL ADHESIVES AND ASSEMBLIES THEREFROMTechnical field

[0001] The present disclosure relates to a two-component (2K) polyurethane composition. In particular, the present invention relates to a low density two-component polyurethane structural adhesive composition.Background of the invention

[0002] New energy vehicles (NEVs) have continued to develop rapidly in recent years. Due to the needs of environmental protection and energy conservation, the lightweighting of automobiles has become the development direction of new energy vehicles. During the installation of power batteries, some structural adhesives are used to fix the battery cells, thereby replacing metal steel to reduce the mass of the battery pack. The density of the traditional two-component polyurethane structural adhesive used for battery cell bonding is generally above 1.3 g / ml.

[0003] Most of the existing low-density structural adhesives use low density hollow glass microspheres to reduce the overall density of the structural adhesive. However, when hollow glass microspheres are used as fillers, there are often several problems. First, due to the strong alkalinity of hollow glass microspheres, the storage stability is often problematic; second, due to the increase in the amount of hollow glass microspheres added, both lap shear strength and bonding strength decrease; the system viscosity increases significantly, the elongation at break decreases largely, and then the brittleness of the cured sample increases a lot.

[0004] Therefore, there is a need to develop a low density (for example, 0.75 g / ml or less, preferably equal to or less than 0.7 g / ml) structural adhesive composition with high elongation at break and good lap shear strength.Summary of the invention

[0053] Bismuth catalyst (c)

[0054] The two-component polyurethane structural adhesive composition according to the present invention may contain one or more bismuth catalysts (c) in component (A) for the the reaction of hydroxyl groups and isocyanate groups that is able to form thio complexes.

[0055] Other catalysts in polyurethane chemistry, such as tertiary amine compounds, usual organometallic compounds, such as e.g. iron or in particular tin and zinc compounds, are not suitable for present invention.

[0056] Examples of suitable bismuth catalysts include complexes and salts of bismuth.

[0057] The bismuth catalyst preferably includes a bismuth compound, especially a bismuth (III) compound. It was surprisingly found that the bismuth catalyst can work with polythiol compound to balance the mechanical property and low density. Especially improve tensile strength and elongation at break properties in a low density 2K polyurethane structural adhesive.

[0058] A multiplicity of conventional bismuth catalysts may be used as the bismuth compound. Examples are bismuth carboxylates, for example bismuth acetate, oleate, octoate or neodecanoate, bismuth nitrate, bismuth halides such as the bromide, chloride, or iodide, bismuth sulfide, basic bismuth carboxylates such as bismuthyl neodecanoate, bismuth subgallate or bismuth subsalicylate, and mixtures thereof.

[0059] In a preferred embodiment, the bismuth catalyst is a bismuth (III) complex containing at least one ligand based on 8-hydroxyquinoline and 1, 3-ketoamide.

[0060] The bismuth catalyst is present in the component (A) in an amount of from 0.001 to less than 0.05 wt. %, or from 0.005 to 0.045 wt. %, or from 0.01 to 0.045 wt. %, or from 0.015 to 0.045 wt. %, or in an amount of 0.01 wt. %, or 0.012 wt. %, or 0.014 wt. %, or 0.016 wt. %, or 0.017wt. %, or 0.020 wt. %, or 0.025 wt. %, or 0.030wt. %, or 0.033 wt. %, or 0.040 wt. %, or 0.045wt. %, or 0.048 wt. %, based on the total weight of component (A) .

[0061] Polythiol compound (d)

[0062] The two-component polyurethane structural adhesive composition according to the present invention may contain at least a polythiol compound having at least three thiol groups in component (A) .

[0063] Suitable polythiol compound are all compounds having at least three thiol or mercapto groups that are able to be formulated into the composition of present invention. A thiol group is understood here as meaning an -SH group that is attached to an organic radical, for example an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic carbon radical.

[0064] Preference is given to polythiol compounds having at least 3, especially 3 to 4 thiol groups. Polythiol compounds having three thiol groups have the advantage that the mechanical properties of the low-density composition when cured are improved.

[0065] Examples of suitable polythiol compounds having at least three thiol groups are ethylene glycol di (3-mercaptopropionate) , dipentaerythritol hexa (3-mercaptopropionate) , and 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane.

[0066] The two-component polyurethane structural adhesive composition, based on the total weight of the component (A) , preferably contains 0.02 wt. %to less than 0.5 wt. %, or 0.02 wt. %to 0.45 wt. %, or 0.02 wt. %to 0.4 wt. %, or 0.03 wt. %to 0.35 wt. %, or 0.03 wt. %to 0.33 wt. %, of the polythiol compound having at least three thiol groups. Preferably, the polythiol compound is present in component (A) in an amount of 0.02 wt. %, or 0.025 wt. %, or 0.030 wt. %, or 0.034 wt. %, or 0.05wt. %, or 0.06 wt. %, or 0.067 wt. %, or 0.07 wt. %, or 0.08 wt. %, or 0.10 wt. %, or 0.15wt. %, or 0.165 wt. %, or 0.25 wt. %, or 0.30 wt. %, or 0.33 wt. %, or 0.35 wt. %, or 0.45 wt. %, based on the total weight of component (A) .

[0067] In some embodiments, the weight ratio of the polythiol compound to the bismuth catalyst is from 10: 1 to greater than 1: 1, or from 10: 1 to 1.2: 1, or from 10: 1 to 1.5: 1, or from 10: 1 to 1.7: 1, or from 10: 1 to 2: 1. For example, the weight ratio of the polythiol compound to the bismuth catalyst is 10: 1, or 9: 1, or 8.5: 1, or 6: 1, or 5: 1, or 4: 1, or 3: 1, or 2: 1, or 1.8: 1, or 1.7: 1, or 1.5: 1, or 1.2: 1, or 1.1: 1.

[0068] Hollow glass microsphere (e)

[0069] The two-component polyurethane structural adhesive composition comprises at least one hollow glass microsphere (e) to provide the low density and appropriate strength to the structural adhesive  for using in battery application. The hollow glass microsphere is present in component (A) and / or component (B) .

[0070] The hollow glass microspheres used have a compressive strength, measured in accordance with ASTM D3102-72, of at least 20 MPa, preferably at least 25 MPa.

[0071] In addition, the hollow glass microspheres have a density of at least 0.2 kg / L, preferably at least 0.3 kg / L, especially at least 0.35 kg / L. When hollow beads having lower density are used, the strength of the composition is too low, and the hardness and surface characteristics of the structural adhesive no longer meet the demands used in battery application. When hollow beads having higher density are used, in order to achieve the target density of the adhesive, a higher content of glass beads needs to be added, which can lead to an uneven mixing of the system.

[0072] The hollow glass microspheres are essentially spherical bodies comprising a shell and a gas in the inner cavity. The gas may, for example, be air, CO2, nitrogen, oxygen, hydrogen, a noble gas or mixtures of said gases. The shell may be made, for example from, glass, in particular borosilicate glass, silicates, in particular aluminosilicate. The hollow glass microspheres may be surface-modified or non-surface modified.

[0073] The hollow glass microspheres provide ideal mechanical properties, which is advantageous in the case of structural adhesive for battery application. Other hollow beads, such as polymer microspheres don’t have such good mechanical properties.

[0074] Suitable, commercially available hollow glass microspheres made of glass are 3MTM Glass Bubbles, available from 3M Deutschland GmbH. Particular preference is given to the S60, K37, iM16K and S28HS products.

[0075] The hollow glass microspheres are preferably in both component (A) and component (B) . In this case, component (A) contains at least 15 wt. %, or at least 16 wt. %, or at least 18 wt. %, or at least 20 wt. %, or at least 25 wt. %, of hollow glass microspheres, based on the total weight of component (A) , and component (B) contains at least 15 wt. %, or at least 16 wt. %, or at least 18 wt. %, or at least  20 wt. %, or at least 25 wt. %, of hollow glass microspheres, based on the total weight of component (B) . The content of lightweight glass beads can be adjusted according to the desired final density of the adhesive to achieve a controlled adhesive density of less than 0.75 g / ml.

[0076] In some embodiments, the at least one polymeric polyol is present from 15 wt. %to 30 wt. %, or from 20 wt. %to 25 wt. %, or from 16 wt. %to 24 wt. %, from 17 wt. %to 22 wt. %, from 18 wt. %to 22 wt. %, based on the total weight of the two-component polyurethane structural adhesive composition.

[0077] Component (B)

[0078] Isocyanate-terminated compound (b)

[0079] The two-component polyurethane structural adhesive composition comprises an isocyanate-terminated compound in component (B) .

[0080] The isocyanate-terminated compound can be any compound having on average two, three or more isocyanate groups. As incorporated herein the term “isocyanate-terminated compound” encompasses diisocyanate, polymeric isocyanates, and isocyanate-terminated oligomers and polymers. It can be used both individually and mixtures, such isocyanate-terminated compounds. In one embodiment, the isocyanate-terminated compound is selected from the group consisting of an aromatic polyisocyanate, an alicyclic polyisocyanate, an aliphatic polyisocyanate, and mixture thereof, and preferably is one or more aliphatic polyisocyanates. The isocyanate-terminated compound preferably has an NCO content of 20 to 30%. The viscosity of the isocyanate-terminated compound is preferably no more than 5000 mPa. s.

[0081] Some advantageous isocyanate-terminated compounds have the general structure O=C=N-X-N=C=O where X is an aliphatic, alicyclic or aryl radical, preferably an aliphatic or alicyclic radical containing 4 to 18 carbon atoms.

[0082] Some suitable isocyanates include 1, 5-naphthylene diisocyanate, diphenyl methane diisocyanate (MDI) including the 2, 2’-2, 4’-and 4, 4'-isomers, polymeric MDI (pMDI) , hydrogenated MDI (HMDI) ,  xylylene diisocyanate (XDI) , tetramethyl xylylene diisocyanate (TMXDI) , di-and tetraalkylene diphenylmethane diisocyanate, 4, 4'-dibenzyl diisocyanate, 1, 3-phenylene diisocyanate, 1, 4-phenylene diisocyanate, the isomers of toluene diisocyanate (TDI) . Aromatic polyisocyanates are preferred and diphenyl methane diisocyanate (MDI) and its isomers and polymeric MDI (pMDI) are more preferred as part or all of the polyisocyanates used for synthesis of the pre-polymers.

[0083] Some suitable isocyanates include isocyanate functional pre-polymers. Such pre-polymers are formed by reacting excess amount of polyisocyanate with a polyol, a polyamine, polythiol, or the combination of them. “Excess” is understood to mean that there are more equivalents of isocyanate functionality from the polyisocyanate compound than equivalents of hydroxyl functionality from the polyol present during reaction to form the pre-polymer. In this disclosure, it is to be understood that the terms polyisocyanate pre-polymer or pre-polymer or isocyanate functional pre-polymer are applied to any compound made according to the forgoing description, i.e., as long as the compound is made with at least a stoichiometric excess of isocyanate groups to isocyanate reactive groups it will be referred to herein as polyisocyanate pre-polymer or a pre-polymer or isocyanate functional pre-polymer.

[0084] The isocyanate-terminated compound is stored in a separate component (isocyanate component or component B) before curing with polyols and is present in the component (B) in an amount of from 50 to 79 wt. %, or from 55 to 79 wt. %, or from 60 to 79 wt. %, or from 70 to 79 wt. %, based on the total weight of the component (B) .

[0085] The ratio of the isocyanate groups contained in the isocyanate-terminated compounds relative to the OH groups contained in the polyols is as a rule in the range of equivalence and it is expedient if a slight excess of isocyanate groups in relation to the humidity is present at the surface. According to the invention, the NCO / OH ratio is between 0.90: 1 and 1.5: 1, in particular between 1.0: 1 and 1.3: 1. According to the invention, the component (A) and the component (B) may be mixed in a weight ratio from 0.9: 1 to 1.1: 1, or about 1: 1, depending on the choices of polyols and isocyanate-terminated compounds.

[0086] In order to produce structural adhesive composition according to the invention, the polymeric polyol component and isocyanate-terminated component and other optional component are mixed optionally under heating, subsequently optionally solid components should be dissolved in the mixtures. Subsequently, the additives are mixed and dispersed. In this context, the humidity content should be kept low, for example water can be reduced by means of molecular sieves. Inert additives may also partially be admixed to the isocyanate-terminated compound. For application, the polyol parts and the isocyanate parts are mixed together in a manner known per se and the mixture is applied to the substrates to be bonded together.

[0087] Optional additives

[0088] The structural adhesive compositions of the present invention will typically further comprise optional additives, which are necessarily minor components, but which can nevertheless impart improved properties to these compositions. The total amount of optional additives in the compositions will preferably be up to 10 parts by weight, and more preferably from 0.1 to 10 parts by weight or from 0.1 to 7.5 parts by weight, of the composition.

[0089] Preparing Method of the 2-component polyurethane structural adhesive composition

[0090] The 2K polyurethane structural adhesive compositions could be prepared by any suitable process. The 2K polyurethane structural adhesive potting compositions are formulated by simple mixing all the components of component A and mixing all the components of component B.

[0091] No restrictions are required to prepare the 2K PU structural adhesive composition, as long as the method complies with a conventional method to prepare a two-component polyurethane structural adhesive composition. A 2-liter planetary mixer (manufactured by PC Laborsystem Co., Ltd. ) was used in the present invention to prepare the component A and the component B.

[0141] Example 2-5, and CE1-CE15

[0142] The two-component polyurethane structural adhesive compositions of E2 to E5, CE1 to CE15 were prepared in reference to Example 1. More details are listed in below result part.

[0143] Test Methods

[0144] Density of the two-component polyurethane structural adhesive

[0145] Component A and Component B were mixed by a static mixing system at volume ratio of 1: 1, mixed adhesive is injected into a density cup to calculate density before curing. The density of the specimen was then calculated by weight / volume.

[0146] Density results are recorded and ranked as follows:

[0147] - Not pass: the density is greater than 0.75 g / ml.

[0148] - Pass: the density is equal to or lower than 0.75 g / ml.

[0149] - Good: the density is equal to or lower than 0.70 g / ml.

[0150] Lap-shear strength

[0151] The overlap shear strength was tested according to GBT 7124. Aluminum (3003Al H24 Aluminum from Zhejiang GuanHua ELECTRIC CO., LTD, and epoxy powder coated 3003Al H24 Aluminum from Xiamen XingShengZhe Industry and Trade CO., LTD) strips (25 mm width, 100 mm length) were wiped 3 times with isopropanol before using. Bond two aluminum sample strips together with adhesive, control the bonding area around 12.5 mm *25 mm, the thickness around 0.2 mm.

[0152] The test specimens were cured for 7 days in a controlled environment room (25±3 ℃, 30-70%relative humidity) , and then tests of overlap shear strength were performed by using a Zwick tension  tester at moving speed of 5 mm / min. Each test was repeated 3 samples to get the average value in MPa.

[0153] Lap Shear Strength results are recorded and ranked as follows:

[0154] - Not pass: lower than 8.0 Mpa.

[0155] - Pass: greater than or equal to 8.0 Mpa.

[0156] - Good: greater than or equal to 9.0 Mpa.

[0157] <E-Modulus and Elongation at break test>

[0158] The modulus and elongation at break test were carried out by Instron universal testing machine, and the test method was in accordance with ISO 527-2. Methods of preparing test specimen included injection molding and die cutting. The e-modulus and elongation at break test were then carried out at 50 mm / min and the data would be calculated automatically by the testing machine. The test results are shown in below tables.

[0159] E-Modulus results are recorded and ranked as follows:

[0160] - Not pass: the Modulus is greater than 200 Mpa.

[0173] Table 4.

[0174] Table 4 shows testing results of the 2K polyurethane structural adhesive compositions CE6-CE15.

[0175] In Examples 1 to 5, the two-component polyurethane structural adhesive compositions were prepared according to the formulations provided by the present invention. The uncured structural adhesives have a density of equal to or less than 0.70 g / ml. It can be seen that when the contents of the claimed components of the present invention are within certain ranges, especially when the weight ratio of the polythiol compound to the bismuth catalyst is from 10: 1 to 2: 1, the prepared structural adhesives show good balance between good elongation, e-modulus, lap shear strength, tensile strength. That is the adhesives have good mechanical strength and adhesion performance even at low density.

[0176] It can be seen from CE1 and CE2, the absence of polythiol compound or bismuth catalyst will result in poor balance of elongation and lap shear strength at low density.

[0177] Compared CE3, CE4 and CE5, using tin catalyst alone or with polythiol compound can’t reach good balance of elongation and lap shear strength at low density.

[0178] Compared with E1, hollow glass microsphere is absent in CE6, and hollow glass microsphere is replaced by a filler with conventional density in CE7. The adhesive samples of CE6 and CE7 show high density (1.2 g / ml and 1.4 g / ml) and the adhesives don’t have balance issue of elongation and lap shear strength.

[0179] CE8 and CE4 contain fillers of different densities, and sample tests show that the CE8 adhesives containing higher density fillers have higher densities, but do not show mechanical property problems, such as elongation at break and lap shear strength.

[0180] CE9 to CE12 comprise the same amount of bismuth catalyst of E1, but the polythiol compounds have only 1 thiol group or 2 thiol groups per molecular, thus the structural adhesive samples don’t have both good elongation and lap shear strength at low density.

[0181] CE13 comprise excess amount of polythiol compound or bismuth catalyst, which impacts both elongation and lap shear strength.

[0182] In comparative examples CE14-CE15, the weight ratio of the polythiol compound to the bismuth catalyst is 1: 1 and 1: 2 separately, which is out of claimed scope of 10: 1 to greater than1: 1. Subtle differences in weight ratio of the polythiol compound to the bismuth catalyst will lead to huge different result.
