Description

A GRIPPER FOR A ROBOTFIELD

[0001] Embodiments of the present disclosure generally relate to a robot, and more specifically, to a gripper for a robotic arm configured to pick up and push a grommet plug into a hole.BACKGROUND

[0002] In many applications, there is a need to push a grommet plug into a hole. For example, in an automobile industry, there are a plurality of holes that are formed in a workpiece (such as a vehicle body) during its producing process. After the workpiece is produced, the holes should be plugged with a grommet plug. Typically, this work is manually done and to plug hundreds and / or thousands of holes, without any error is labor intensive. There is need to provide a tool which can push the grommet plug into the hole with high precision and high repeatability.SUMMARY

[0003] Example embodiments of the present disclosure provide a gripper and a robot which mitigates or obviates one or more above mentioned problems.

[0004] In a first aspect of the present disclosure, there is provided a gripper. The gripper is configured to pick up and push a grommet plug into a hole and comprises: a body; an inner cylinder extending along an axial direction and comprising a suction passage, the inner cylinder comprising a suction end configured to attract the grommet plug by vacuum suction; and an outer cylinder attached to the body and surrounding the inner cylinder; wherein the inner cylinder is configured to be movable, with respect to the outer cylinder along the axial direction, between a retracted position at which the suction end of the inner cylinder does not protrude away from an end of the outer cylinder and an extended position at which the suction end of the inner cylinder protrudes away from the end of the outer cylinder by a distance to deform a central part of the grommet plug attached to the suction end of the inner cylinder.

[0005] According to the present disclosure, with the double cylinder arrangement, the  grommet plug can be pushed into the hole reliably with a simplified structure.

[0006] In some embodiments, the end of the outer cylinder may be away from the suction end of the inner cylinder along the axial direction by a gap, the gap providing an additional suction force when the grommet plug is attracted to the suction end by vacuum suction

[0033] Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a robot 100 according to one example embodiment of the present disclosure. As shown in Fig. 1, the robot 1 comprises a manipulator 20 formed by a plurality of joints. A tool 30 is fixed to an end flange 22 of the manipulator 20. The robot 1 is programmed to move within its workspace. The tool 30 is specifically designed and is configured to pick up and push a grommet plug 40 into a hole 52 of a workpiece (referring to Fig. 5) . According to the present disclosure, with the specially designed tool 30, by moving the manipulator 20, it is possible to pick up a grommet plug 40 and then  insert the grommet plug 40 into the hole with high reliability.

[0034] Fig. 2 is a partial enlarged view of the robot shown in Fig. 1. As shown in Fig. 2, the tool 30 may include a mounting portion 32 and a bracket 34 fixed to the mounting portion 32. The mounting portion 32 is configured to mate with the end flange 22 so as to mount the tool 30 to the end flange 22. In the shown example, the mounting portion 32 is shown as a flange and the mounting portion 32 can be fixed to the end flange 22 via screw fasteners. It is to be understood that the mounting portion 32 can be any other proper forms. On the bracket 34, one or more grippers 10 are provided. In the shown example, the bracket 34 may include a central hollow portion and one or more grippers 10 extend radially outward from the bracket 34.

[0035] Within the central hollow portion, hoses 60 for providing vacuum in the gripper 10 may be arranged. A distal end of the gripper 10 may be used as a working portion. Due to the fact that the hoses 60 are centrally arranged, it mitigates a tangling risk of the hoses. Also, with the distal end of the gripper 10 as a working portion, space for operation of the gripper is large and interference risks among different grippers 10 are mitigated. In the shown example, there are two grippers. It is to be understood that the shown arrangement is merely illustrative and the number of grippers 10 may be any other proper number.

[0036] Figs. 3-5 show structural details of the gripper 10 according to one example embodiment of the present disclosure. Fig. 3 is a closed-up perspective view of a gripper 10 with a grommet plug 40, and Figs. 4 and 5 show the inner structural details of the gripper 10 respectively. Figs. 4 and 5 also show how the gripper 10 operates to pick up the grommet plug 40 and how the gripper 10 operates to push the grommet plug 40 into a hole 52 in a workpiece 50. As shown in Fig 5, there are a number of holes 52 are provided in the workpiece 50. The grommet plug 40 is sized to be larger than a dimension of the hole 50. The grommet plug 40 may be made of flexible material and can be deformed to fit the shape of the hole 50, such as rubber, polymer, and the like. The grommet plug 40 may comprise a cover portion 44, a support potion 46, and a flange 42. The flange 42 is inversely arranged like a barb, and is of a size larger than the hole which means that the flange 42 cannot be directly inserted into the hole unless a sufficient force is applied thereto. In order to plug the grommet plug 40 into the hole, a sufficient force should be applied onto the cover portion 44 so as to deform the cover portion 44 as shown in Fig. 5. The deformation of the cover portion 44 allows the flange 42 to go into the hole. Once the flange 42 has been inserted  into the hole 50, the flange 42 returns to its original shape (as shown in dashed line) . The grommet plug 40 is thus locked in position within the hole.

[0037] As shown in Fig. 3, the gripper 10 may comprise a body 16, an inner cylinder 12 (referring to Figs. 4 to 5) , and an outer cylinder 14. The inner cylinder 12 and the outer cylinder 14 may be mounted to the body 16. The body 16 may be fixed to the bracket 34. The gripper 10 may be of an elongate shape and extends lengthwise (also called an axial direction) . The outer cylinder 14 comprises a central hole 142 and the central hole 142 extends along the axial direction. The inner cylinder 12 is partially arranged within the central hole 142 and is surrounded by the outer cylinder 14. In the shown example, the inner cylinder 12 and the outer cylinder 14 are of a cylindrical shape. It is to be understood that the shown example is merely illustrative and the inner cylinder 12 and the outer cylinder 14 may be of any other proper shapes.

[0038] As shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the inner cylinder 12 extends along an axial direction and defines a suction passage 122. The suction passage 122 may be in communication with an air compressor via a hose 60. The inner cylinder 12 comprises a suction end 124 configured to attract the grommet plug 40 by vacuum suction and an opposite end for connecting the hose 60. When the hose 60 is provided with vacuum, the grommet plug 40 is attracted on to a distal end of the gripper 10.

[0039] The inner cylinder 12 may be configured to be linearly movable with respect to the outer cylinder 14 along the axial direction between a retracted position and an extended position. Fig. 4 shows a state at which the inner cylinder 12 is located at the retracted position and Fig. 5 shows a state at which the inner cylinder 12 is located at the extended position. As shown in Figs. 4 and 5, at the retracted position, the suction end 124 of the inner cylinder 12 does not protrude away from an end 144 of the outer cylinder 14. At the extended position, the suction end 124 of the inner cylinder 12 protrudes away from the end 144 of the outer cylinder 14 by a distance. Due to this protrusion distance, it is possible to deform a central part of the grommet plug 40 attached to the suction end 124 of the inner cylinder 12, as shown in Fig. 5.

[0040] According to the present disclosure, the fact that the gripper comprises the inner cylinder and the outer cylinder, a synergistic effect can be achieved. The inner cylinder is responsible for applying a force to a center of the grommet plug so as to deform a central  part of the grommet plug. On the other hand, the outer cylinder is responsible for pressing a peripheral edge of the grommet plug such that the grommet plug is prevented from tilting. This allows the grommet plug to enter into the hole successfully and smoothly. After the grommet plug enters the hole, there is no risk that the grommet plug falls off the hole at all. Compared with a technique that the gripper is formed as a single piece, when the grommet plug is pushed into the hole by the single piece, there is a risk that the grommet plug tilts with respect to a surface where the hole is located. That is because, when the grommet plug is picked up via vacuum suction, the grommet plug may tilt. In this event, when pushing a grommet plug into the hole by the single piece, the risk that the grommet plug could not enter into the hole is very high. In contrast, according to the present disclosure, with the double cylinders arrangement, the rate that the grommet plug successfully goes into the hole is dramatically increased. According to the present disclosure, tests shows that the success rate can be 100%.

[0041] In some embodiments, as shown in Fig. 4, the end 144 of the outer cylinder 14 is higher than the suction end 124 of the inner cylinder 12 along the axial direction by a gap 13.The gap 13 provides additional suction force when the grommet plug 40 is attracted to the suction end 124 by vacuum suction. The suction passage 122 is in communication with an air compressor via a hose 60. During the pick-up process, the suction passage 122 creates a vacuum environment at its distal end 141. The inner cylinder 12 provides a main suction force which is used for holding the grommet. On the other hand, due to the provision of the gap, the gap provides an auxiliary suction, which prevents the grommet from tilting and / or displacement. The collaboration between the inner and outer cylinders ensure that the center suction caused by the inner cylinder 12 is strong and the outer suction caused by the outer cylinder 14 is coordinated and stable.

[0042] In some embodiments, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the inner cylinder 12 and / or the outer cylinder 14 may additionally comprise contact caps 121, 141 respectively provided at the distal ends of the cylinders. In some embodiments, the contact caps 121, 141 may be detachably attached to the distal ends of the cylinders. The contact caps 121, 141 may be of proper shapes for contacting the grommet plug 40. When the holes 52 are of different size, this is advantageous. For example, by replacing the contact caps 121, 141 of different sizes without modifying the structures of the inner cylinder 12 and / or the outer cylinder 14, the grippers is adapted to various grommet plugs 40 and various holes. In addition, after long  term use of the grippers, by replacing the contact caps 121, 141, the gripper can maintain good performances. In the shown example, both the inner cylinder 12 and the outer cylinder 14 comprise contact caps 121, 141. It is to be understood that the shown example is merely illustrative. In some embodiments, one of the inner cylinder 12 and the outer cylinder 14 is provided with a contact cap.

[0043] There are many ways to realize relative movement between the inner cylinder 12 and the outer cylinder 14. In some embodiments, there is an active mechanism configured to drive the inner cylinder 12 such that the inner cylinder 12 moves within the central hole 142 of the outer cylinder 14. For example, an actuator may be arranged on the body 16 or the bracket 34 and is configured to drive the inner cylinder 12. In some embodiments, there is no active mechanism to create relative movement between the inner cylinder 12 and the outer cylinder 14. Rather, the relative movement between the inner cylinder 12 and the outer cylinder 14 is created by movement of the manipulator.

[0044] Figs. 6-8 shows an embodiment which no active mechanism is provided. Fig. 6 is a sectional view of a gripper 10 cut along its axial direction as well as a grommet plug 40 according to one example embodiment of the present disclosure. Figs. 7 and 8 are exploded views of the gripper shown in Fig. 6.

[0045] As shown in Figs. 6-8, the body 16 of the gripper 10 may comprise a mounting hole 162 extending along the axial direction. The outer cylinder 14 is received in the mounting hole 162. The length of the inner cylinder 12 is larger than the outer cylinder 14 and thus is also movably received in the mounting hole 162. The body 16 may comprise a hose hole 161 in communication with the mounting hole 162. The hose 60 enter a cavity of the mounting hole 162 via the hose hole 161 and the hose 60 may be fixed to the inner cylinder 12 at the bottom of the inner cylinder 12. In some embodiments, as shown in Fig. 6, the bottom of the inner cylinder 12 may be provided with threads 125. The hose 60 may be fixed to the inner cylinder 12 via thread connection. It is to be understood that the shown example is merely illustrative and there are many other proper ways to fix the hose 60.

[0046] In some embodiments, both the inner cylinder 12 and the outer cylinder 14 are configured to linearly move along the axial direction. As the manipulator 30 moves, the inner cylinder 12 moves further than the outer cylinder 14 such that the suction end 124 of the inner cylinder 12 protrudes away from the end 144 of the outer cylinder 14 to deform  the central part of the grommet plug 40. During this process, the end 144 of the outer cylinder 14 may be used to press against the peripheral edge of the cover portion 44 (also referring to Fig. 4) so as to stabilize the grommet plug 40, this may prevent the grommet plug 40 from tilting when the inner cylinder 12 deforms the central part of the grommet plug 40.

[0047] In some embodiments, the outer cylinder 14 is supported by a first spring 15 having a first elastic modulus arranged within the mounting hole 162, and the inner cylinder 12 is supported by a second spring 17 having a second elastic modulus larger than the first elastic modulus arranged within the mounting hole 162. As the outer cylinder 14 and the inner cylinder 12 are of different elastic modulus, this may facilitate movement of the inner cylinder 12 to deform the central part of the grommet plug 40.

[0048] During operation, as the manipulator 30 moves, the gripper 10 firstly moves to the grommet plug 40 and aligns with the grommet plug 40. In this state, both the outer cylinder 14 and the inner cylinder 12 are in contact with the cover portion of the grommet plug 40. When the gripper 10 further moves, both the outer cylinder 14 and the inner cylinder 12 linearly retracts the same distance along a first direction along the axially direction and both the first spring 15 and the second spring 17 store energy. The stored energy in the first spring 15 causes the outer cylinder 14 to press against the peripheral edge of the cover portion 44 to stabilize the grommet plug 40. The stored energy in the first spring 15 causes the inner cylinder 12 to protrude away from the end 144 of the outer cylinder 14 so to deform the central part of the grommet plug 40. After the central part of the grommet plug 40 is deformed, as shown in Fig. 6, the flange 42 goes into the hole 52 smoothly. Once the flange 42 has been inserted into the hole 50, the flange 42 returns to its original shape (as shown in) . The grommet plug 40 is thus locked in position within the hole 52.

[0049] In some embodiments, as shown in Figs. 6-8, the gripper 10 may further comprise a separating ring 19. The separate ring 19 is used to fix the inner cylinder 12 in the mounting hole 162. The separate ring 19 may define an upper movement limit of the inner cylinder 12.The separate ring 19 may be fixed within the mounting hole 162. In some embodiments, the separate ring 19 may include outer threads and the mounting hole 162 may include inner threads for engaging with the outer threads. In this way, the separate ring 19 may be fixed in position within the mounting hole 162 via screw connection. It is to be understood that the show example is merely illustrative and the separate ring 19 may be fixed within the  mounting hole 162 via any proper means. In some embodiments, the separating ring 19 is configured to separate the mounting hole 162 into a fist mounting cavity for receiving the first spring 15 and a second mounting cavity for receiving the second spring 17. The fist mounting cavity may have a larger dimension than the second mounting cavity. The separate ring 19 also can be used to support one end of the first spring 15.

[0050] In some embodiments, as shown in Figs. 6-8, the gripper 10 may further comprise a flange 126 provided on an outer surface of the inner cylinder 12. A size of the flange 126 may be properly designed to properly position the inner cylinder 12 in the mounting hole 162 of the body 16. In addition, the flange 126 may be used as a stop member for stopping an axial movement of the inner cylinder 12. In some embodiments, the flange 126 may also be used for supporting the second spring 17. For example, one end of the second spring 17 may be arranged on a lower side of the second flange 126.

[0051] In some embodiments, the inner cylinder 12 is prevent from rotating. This is advantageous since any tilting of the grommet plug 40 may cause a risk of operation failure. In some embodiments, an anti-rotating means is realized by a shape-fit of the flange 126 and the mounting hole 162. In some embodiments, as shown in Figs. 6-8, the flange 126 is shaped to match a shape of at least a part of the mounting hole 162 to guide the linear movement of the inner cylinder 12. In some embodiments, the flange 126 is of a non-circular shaped section, for example, a D-shape section, a rectangle-section, and the like. At least a part of the mounting hole 162 has a corresponding non-circular shape such that the inner cylinder 12 is prevented from rotating during the linear movement of the inner cylinder 12.

[0052] In some embodiments, as shown in Figs. 6-8, the gripper 10 may further comprise a stopping member 164. The stopping member 164 may be fixed to the body via screws 168. The stopping member 164 is configured to close a top opening of the mounting hole 162. The stopping member 164 may define an upper movement limit of the outer cylinder 14. In some embodiments, the stopping member 164 comprises a guide hole 166 aligned with the mounting hole 162. The guide hole 166 allows the inner cylinder 12 and the outer cylinder 14 to pass through the stopping member 164 and is configured to guide a linear movement of the outer cylinder 14.

[0053] In some embodiments, the outer cylinder 14 may comprise a flange 146 having a larger dimension that the guide hole 166. The flange 146 is received in the central hole 142.  A size of the flange 146 may be properly designed to properly position the outer cylinder 14 in the mounting hole 162 of the body 16. In addition, the flange 146 may be used as a stop member for stopping an axial movement of the outer cylinder 14. When the flange 146 contacts the stopping member 164, the outer cylinder 14 is stopped from further moving. In addition, or alternatively, the first spring 15 may be arranged between the flange 146 and the separate ring 19.

[0054] In some embodiments, the outer cylinder 14 is prevent from rotating. This is advantageous since any tilting of the grommet plug 40 may cause a risk of operation failure. In some embodiments, an anti-rotating means is realized by a shape-fit of a part of the outer cylinder 14 with the guide hole 166 of the stopping member 164. In some embodiments, as shown in Figs. 6-8, at least a part 148 of the outer cylinder 14 may be shaped to match a shape of at least a part of the guide hole 166 to guide the linear movement of the outer cylinder 14. The shape fit between the outer cylinder 14 and the stopping member 164 ensures a proper positioning of the outer cylinder 14, which is beneficial for pushing the grommet plug 40 into the hole and ensures a repeatability of each pushing action. In some embodiments, the part 148 of the outer cylinder 14 is of a non-circular shape, for example, a D-shape section, a rectangle-section (also referring to Fig. 3) , and the like and the at least a part of the guide hole 166 has a corresponding non-circular shape such that the outer cylinder 14 is prevented from rotating during the linear movement of the outer cylinder 14.

[0055] In addition, or alternatively, the anti-rotating means may be realized by a shape-fit of the flange 146 and the mounting hole 162. In some embodiments, as shown in Figs. 6-8, the flange 146 is also shaped to match a shape of at least a part of the mounting hole 162 to guide the linear movement of the outer cylinder 14. In some embodiments, the flange 146 is of a non-circular shaped section, for example, a D-shape section, a rectangle-section, and the like. At least a part of the mounting hole 162 has a corresponding non-circular shape such that the outer cylinder 14 is further prevented from rotating during the linear movement of the outer cylinder 14. The shape fit between the outer cylinder 14 and the body 16 ensures a proper positioning of the outer cylinder 14, which is beneficial for pushing the grommet plug 40 into the hole and ensures a repeatability of each pushing action.

[0056] According to the present disclosure, a method of picking up and push a grommet plug 40 into a hole using the robot of claim 14 is provided. In the method, causing a manipulator 30 of a robot 100 is caused to move to pick up one or more grommet plugs 40  using a gripper 10 fixed to the end flange 22 of the manipulator via vacuum suction. For example, the grommet plugs 40 may be arranged in a fixed area or is transported in a conveyer. The manipulator 30 is instructed to pick up the grommet plugs 40, for example, one by one, from the fixed area or the conveyer. The manipulator 30 of the robot is then caused to move such that the grommet plug 40 fixed on the grommet plug 40 by vacuum suction is aligned with the hole 52. A position of the hole 52 in the workpiece 50 may be determined in advance for example by vision sensor. In this way, the robot 100 knows where the hole 52 is located and instructs the manipulator 30 to move to the determined position.

[0057] Then, the manipulator 30 is instructed to perform the pushing action. During this process, the manipulator 30 is instructed to move to cause an outer cylinder 14 of the gripper 10 to press against a peripheral side of the grommet plug 40. While the outer cylinder presses against a peripheral side of the grommet plug 40, an inner cylinder 12 of the gripper 10 is caused to linearly move such that a suction end 124 of the inner cylinder 12 of the gripper 10 protrudes beyond an end 144 of the outer cylinder 14 by a distance to deform a central part of the grommet plug 40. In some embodiments, the relative movement between the outer cylinder 14 and the inner cylinder 12 is realized by different springs.

[0058] The description of the various embodiments of the present invention have been presented for purposes of illustration, but are not intended to be exhaustive or limited to the embodiments disclosed. Many modifications and variations will be apparent to those of ordinary skill in the art without departing from the scope and spirit of the described embodiments. The terminology used herein was chosen to best explain the principles of the embodiments, the practical application or technical improvement over technologies found in the marketplace, or to enable others of ordinary skill in the art to understand the embodiments disclosed herein.
