[0005] Within the food industry today, the food package technology plays an important part. The food package has several important functions. Apart from branding of the product and presenting the customers with information, the food package also has an important role of ensuring food safety. The packaging materials used in the food package can be designed to provide strength and stability, so that the packages are not damaged during transportation. Furthermore, the packaging materials can form a protective environment for the food product so that it is protected from for example bacteria, germs, oxygen and sun light, thus prolonging shelf life. The packaging material may be based on fiberboard material.

[0006] Forming a food package from fiberboard involves a precise combination of scoring, i.e. creating creases, folding, and sometimes adhesive application. This process allows a flat sheet of fiberboard material to be transformed into a three- dimensional package. The use of fiberboard material, typically made from layers of paper pulp or any other suitable fiber material, fiberboard is chosen for its strength, rigidity, and ability to retain creases. In order to prepare the fiberboard material to be transformed into a three-dimensional package, a flat sheet of fiberboard is printed with branding and product information. It may also be laminated with moisture-resistant, and / or grease-resistant layers. Moreover, the fiberboard material is provided with creases or scores acting as hinges to facilitate controlled and precise folding into the three-dimensional package. Various methods for applying the creases or scores exists. For example, a rotary die cutter may be used to press a metal die onto the fiberboard to create creases or scores along specific lines. Alternatively, or in combination, a flat die may be used to apply pressure on specific areas in order to create creases or scores, this is especially useful for creating more intricate designs. A flat die may also be used for creating embosses in the fiberboard material. Alternatively, or in combination, scoring / creasing rollers may be used to create a pattern of creases or

However, such simulations are computer power demanding as well as time consuming to perform. [0010] The herein disclosed technology seeks to at least partly mitigate, alleviate or eliminate one or more of the above-mentioned deficiencies and disadvantages in the prior art. In particular, it is an object to provide an improved way of determining a relative crack index, RCI, map for a candidate fiberboard patterning design.

[0011] The inventors of the present inventive concept have realized a new and improved way of determining a RCI map for a candidate fiberboard patterning design. Especially, an improved way of determining a RCI map for a candidate fiberboard patterning design which is less time consuming and less processing demanding as compared with prior art. According to the present invention a machine learning model is trained to predict the RCI map for a candidate fiberboard patterning.

Typically, finite element method simulations are to be performed on cluster computers. However, it may be troublesome to get access to time slots on such cluster computers to perform the finite element method simulations. Further, licenses for the software to be used for finite element method simulation may be expensive. Hence, there is a need to have shorter and less expensive development loops in developing new tools for fiberboard patterning. The present invention allows this since once the machine learning model is trained running such model is less computationally heavy than finite element method simulations. The RCI is a critical output of the machine learning model, which is trained on a dataset comprising various fiberboard patterning designs and their corresponding RCI values derived from finite element method simulations. The relative crack index (RCI) is a spatial map quantifying localized crack initiation risk in fiberboard packaging material as caused by the patterning process. In particular, the RCI is represented as a two-dimensional map quantifying local crack initiation probabilities within the fiberboard packaging material as a result of the patterning design. The model is configured to utilize key input features — such as crease depths, material properties, and manufacturing conditions — that influence the RCI, thereby enabling accurate predictions of crack risk for candidate designs. This integration ensures that the model effectively guides the design process to minimize the likelihood of cracking in fiberboard packaging materials.

The values in the 2D matrix of values are a representation of height / depth of the surface topography of the 3D model of a fiberboard patterning design. The respective training RCI map 320 is generated by performing a respective finite element method, FEM, simulation having the 3D model of the fiberboard patterning design as input. Hence, the training dataset generating function 410 is configured to generate a plurality of training fiberboard patterning designs 310 and for each such training fiberboard patterning design 310 a corresponding training RCI map 320. The fiberboard patterning design having the first resolution is typically sampled from a 3D computer model of the patterning design to have the first resolution. A training method for training a machine learning model (300) to predict a relative crack index, RCI, map (520) for a candidate fiberboard patterning design (510) to be used in patterning of fiberboard packaging material, the training method comprising: generating a training dataset for the machine learning model by, for each of a plurality of training fiberboard patterning designs (310), performing a finite element method simulation resulting in a respective training RCI map (320); and training the machine learning model (300) to predict the RCI map (520) for the candidate fiberboard patterning design (510) inputted to the machine learning model (300), the training comprises adjusting weights of the machine learning model (300) using the training fiberboard patterning designs (310) of the training dataset as input and the training RCI maps (320) of the training dataset as ground truth.

2. The training method according to claim 1 , wherein each fiberboard patterning design comprises a surface topography of a tool (100) to be used for applying the patterning to a fiberboard (110).

3. The training method according to claim 2, wherein each fiberboard patterning design is represented as a 2D matrix of values, and wherein the respective RCI map is represented as a 2D matrix of values.

4. The training method according to claim 3, wherein each fiberboard patterning design comprises a surface topography of a male roll (102a) and a surface topography of female roll (102b), respectively, the male and female rolls (102a, 102b) forming a roller nip.

5. The training method according to claim 4, wherein each fiberboard patterning design comprises a roller distance between the male and female rolls (102a, 102b) of the roller nip.

The training method according to any one of claims 1-6, wherein the machine learning model is further configured to have one or more properties of the fiberboard packaging material as input, wherein generating the training dataset for the machine learning model further comprises considering the one or more properties of the fiberboard packaging material in performing the finite element method simulation, wherein training the machine learning model further comprises using the one or more properties of the fiberboard packaging material as input in the training of the machine learning model, wherein the one or more properties of the fiberboard packaging material is selected from the group of properties consisting of: density, elastic and plastic stresses and strains, yield stress / strength, stress / strain at break, thickness and bending stiffness.2786-5560-4240, v. 1198. A computer-implemented method for predicting relative crack index, RCI, for a candidate fiberboard patterning design (510) to be used in fiberboard packaging material patterning, the method comprising: providing a trained machine learning model (300) being trained in accordance with any one of claims 1-6; inputting data of the candidate fiberboard patterning design (510) to the trained machine learning model (300); and receiving a predicted RCI map (520) as output from the trained machine learning model (300).

The method according to claim 9, wherein the provided trained machine learning model (300) has been trained in accordance with claim 7, and wherein the input data to the trained machine learning model (300) further comprises one or more properties of the fiberboard packaging material, wherein the one or more properties of the fiberboard packaging material is selected from the group of properties consisting of: density, elastic and plastic stresses and strains, yield stress / strength, stress / strain at break, thickness and bending stiffness.

The method according to claim 9 or 10, wherein the provided trained machine learning model (300) has been trained in accordance with claim 8, and wherein the input data to the trained machine learning model (300) further comprises the web tension and / or the speed of the web of the fiberboard packaging material.2786-5560-4240, v. 12012. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium having stored thereon a machine learning model that has been trained in accordance with any one of claims 1- 8.

A training apparatus (400) for training a machine learning model (300) to predict a relative crack index, RCI, map (520) for a candidate fiberboard patterning design (510) to be used in patterning of fiberboard packaging material, the training apparatus (400) comprising circuitry (402) configured to execute: a training dataset generating function (410) configured to: from 3D computer models of fiberboard patterning designs, generate a respective training fiberboard patterning design (310), and for each of the training fiberboard patterning designs (310), generate a respective training RCI map (320), wherein the respective training RCI map (320) is generated by performing a respective finite element method simulation having the 3D computer model of the respective fiberboard patterning design as input; and a training function (412) configured to train the machine learning model (300) to predict the RCI map (520) for the candidate fiberboard patterning design (510) by adjusting weights of the machine learning model (300) using the training fiberboard patterning designs (310) as input and the corresponding training RCI maps (320) as ground truth.

14. The training apparatus (400) according to claim 13, wherein the training fiberboard patterning design (310) is represented as a 2D matrix of values representing height / depth of a surface topography of the 3D computer model of the fiberboard patterning design.
