[0003] The invention relates to the field of trucks. More particularly, it is related to truck coupling comprising a nut connection arrangement for connecting the truck coupling to a truck. The nut connection arrangement comprises a threaded shaft and a castellated nut configured to be threaded onto the shaft. A draw beam arrangement comprising a draw beam and such a truck coupling is also disclosed, as well as a truck comprising such a truck coupling or such a draw beam arrangement. A method of mounting a truck coupling to a truck is also disclosed. Moreover, a trailer coupling comprising a nut connection arrangement for connecting the trailer coupling to a trailer and a method of mounting such a trailer coupling to a trailer are also disclosed.

[0004] In various mechanical assemblies, threaded fasteners such as bolts and nuts are widely used to secure components together. However, in many applications, ensuring the rotational immovability of a nut is critical to maintaining the integrity of the assembly under dynamic loads, vibrations, or thermal expansion. Uncontrolled rotation or loosening of the nut can result in mechanical failure, compromised safety, or the need for frequent maintenance.

[0005] When connecting a truck coupling to a truck, the truck coupling is typically connected to the truck by means of a single nut which is threaded onto a threaded shaft of the truck coupling. In this way, the truck coupling is allowed to rotate in relation to the truck. For instance, in response to a trailer being towed via the truck coupling rotating in relation to the truck as a result of an uneven road surface. In such a case, it is of outmost importance that the single nut connecting the truck coupling to the truck is rotationally locked in relation to the threaded shaft or else the trailer could come loose with fatal consequences.

[0006] For corresponding reasons, when connecting a trailer coupling to a trailer, the trailer coupling is typically connected to the trailer by means of a single nut which is threaded onto a threaded shaft of the truck coupling.

[0007] One common method of rotationally locking a nut involves the use of a castellated or slotted nut in combination with a split pin. In this arrangement, the nut features a series of notches or slots around its periphery, allowing the split pin to be inserted through a transverse hole in a bolt and aligned with a corresponding slot in the nut. This configuration mechanically prevents the nut from rotating. While this method effectively prevents rotation, multiple time-consuming adjustments for reaching the necessary alignment between the notches in the nut and the hole in the bolt are often times needed. Moreover, the method introduces limitations when specific torque values are required, e.g. for optimal performance or for safety reasons. The alignment necessary between the notches in the nut and the hole in the bolt often prevents achieving a precise torque setting. Instead, the nut must be tightened or loosened to align the notches with the bolt hole, in practice resulting in a torque value that is either too high or too low. For instance, when a nut having ten notches is combined with a bolt having two transverse holes the nut may have to be rotated as much as 18 degrees in order to align a hole in the bolt with a notch in the nut. This means that the nut may have to be loosened or tightened up to 18 degrees in order to be locked by the split pin. However, the situation may be even worse if the nut has fewer notches or if the bolt has a single transverse hole. For instance, when a nut having eight notches is combined with a bolt having a single transverse hole the nut may have to be rotated as much as 45 degrees in order to align the hole in the bolt with a notch in the nut.

[0008] In this regard, an excess torque can overstress the nut and the bolt. Moreover, the assembly at hand may be deformed or damaged. Correspondingly, an insufficient torque may compromise joint integrity, leading to loosening or failure of the bolt and nut under operational conditions, such as under dynamic load conditions.

[0009] In many cases a specific minimum torque is required. In such cases, the nut cannot be loosened to align the align the notches with the bolt hole, meaning that the nut inevitable will have to be tightened if the notches do not happen to align with the bolt hole when the specific minimum torque is applied.

[0010] In heavy duty applications such additional torque needed to align the notches with the bolt hole may amount more than 1400 Nm, not only risking overstressing the nut and the bolt, but also making it hard and sometimes even impossible to tighten the nut to align the notches with the bolt hole. In this regard, many workshops encounters problems even achieving the high torques required.

[0011] The above drawbacks highlight the need for improved locking mechanisms or methods that allow precise torque application while maintaining the rotational locking functionality, addressing both safety and performance requirements in demanding mechanical environments, such as truck and trailer couplings. With the above in mind, it is an objective of the present invention to provide an improved truck coupling comprising a nut connection arrangement for connecting the truck coupling to a truck, as well as a draw beam arrangement and truck. Another objective is to provide a method of mounting a truck coupling to a truck. Another objective is to provide an improved trailer coupling comprising a nut connection arrangement for connecting the trailer coupling to a trailer. Yet another objective is to provide a method of mounting a trailer coupling to a trailer.

[0020] More specifically, according to a first aspect, there is provided truck coupling comprising a nut connection arrangement for connecting the truck coupling to a truck, the nut connection arrangement comprising: a threaded shaft comprising a plurality of splines extending along a longitudinal axis of the shaft and being evenly distributed about a circumference of the shaft, a castellated nut comprising a plurality of crenellation slots evenly distributed about a circumference of the castellated nut, and being configured to be threaded onto the shaft from an end of the shaft, and a locking member comprising a plurality of radially inwardly extending protrusions configured to engage a respective spline in response to sliding the locking member onto the shaft from the end of the shaft, and a plurality of radially outwardly extending protrusions configured to engage a respective crenellation slot in response to sliding the locking member onto the shaft from the end of the shaft when the castellated nut is threaded onto the shaft, wherein a number of the crenellation slots is not evenly divisible by a number of splines, and wherein the number and an angular distribution of the crenellation slots and the splines are such that, irrespective of a rotational position of the castellated nut in relation to the shaft when the castellated nut is threaded onto the shaft, for at least one rotational position of the locking member, the locking member is slidable onto the shaft such that the plurality of radially inwardly extending protrusions and the plurality of radially outwardly extending protrusions engage with the splines and the crenellation slots, respectively, thereby providing a rotational locking of the castellated nut in relation to the shaft.

However, the nut connection arrangement is particularly useful in heavy duty applications, like truck and trailer couplings, where large torques are involved.

The present invention is based on the realization that by providing a purpose designed combination of a threaded shaft comprising a plurality of splines, a castellated nut comprising a plurality of crenellation slots, and a locking member comprising at least one radially inwardly extending protrusion configured to engage a spline and at least one radially outwardly extending protrusion configured to engage a crenellation slot, there will be, irrespective of a rotational position of the castellated nut in relation to the shaft when the castellated nut is threaded onto the shaft, at least one rotational position of the locking member, in which the locking member is slidable onto the shaft such that the at least one radially inwardly extending protrusion and the at least one radially outwardly extending protrusion engage with the splines and the crenellation slots, respectively, thereby providing a rotational locking of the castellated nut in relation to the shaft. The above effect of rotationally locking the castellated nut in relation to the shaft irrespective of a rotational position of the castellated nut in relation to the shaft is attributable to the number and an angular distribution of the crenellation slots and the splines.

CLAIMS1. A truck coupling (10) comprising a nut connection arrangement (100) for connecting the truck coupling (10) to a truck (1), the nut connection arrangement (100) comprising: a threaded shaft (110) comprising a plurality of splines (112) extending along a longitudinal axis (LA) of the shaft (110) and being evenly distributed about a circumference of the shaft (110), a castellated nut (120) comprising a plurality of crenellation slots (122) evenly distributed about a circumference of the castellated nut (120), and being configured to be threaded onto the shaft (110) from an end of the shaft (110), and a locking member (130) comprising a plurality of radially inwardly extending protrusions (132) configured to engage a respective spline (112) in response to sliding the locking member onto the shaft (110) from the end of the shaft (110), and a plurality of radially outwardly extending protrusions (134) configured to engage a respective crenellation slot (122) in response to sliding the locking member (130) onto the shaft (110) from the end of the shaft (110) when the castellated nut (120) is threaded onto the shaft (110), wherein a number of the crenellation slots (122) is not evenly divisible by a number of splines (112), and wherein the number and an angular distribution of the crenellation slots (122) and the splines (112) are such that, irrespective of a rotational position of the castellated nut (120) in relation to the shaft (110) when the castellated nut (120) is threaded onto the shaft (110), for at least one rotational position of the locking member (130), the locking member (130) is slidable onto the shaft (110) such that the plurality of radially inwardly extending protrusions (132) and the plurality of radially outwardly extending protrusions (134) engage with the splines (112) and the crenellation slots (122), respectively, thereby providing a rotational locking of the castellated nut (130) in relation to the shaft (110).

2. The truck coupling (10) according to claim 1 , wherein the at least one rotational position of the locking member (130) is associated with an angular play within a range of 3,5 to 9 degrees, such as 4 to 6 degrees.

The truck coupling (10) according to claim 1 or 2, wherein the inwardly extending protrusions (132) has a smaller circumferential dimension than the splines (112) such that an inner circumferential clearance (IC) is formed between the inwardly extending protrusions (132) and the splines (112) when the inwardly extending protrusions (132) engages the splines (112), and / or wherein the outwardly extending protrusions (134) has a smaller circumferential dimension than the crenellation slots (122) such that an outer circumferential clearance (OC) is formed between the outwardly extending protrusions (134) and the crenellation slots (122) when the outwardly extending protrusions (134) engages the crenellation slots (122).

4. The truck coupling (10) according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein a number of the radially inwardly extending protrusions (132) equals to the number of the plurality of splines (112).

5. The truck coupling (10) according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein a number of radially outwardly extending protrusions (134) equals to the number of the plurality of crenellation slots (122).

The truck coupling (10) according to claim 10, wherein the fixing member (140) comprises a locking ring (140) configured to engage a circumferentially extending groove (114) of the shaft (110), or wherein the fixing member (140) comprises a locking pin configured to engage a transversally extending bore of the shaft (110).

9. A draw beam arrangement (11) comprising: a draw beam (12) configured to be connected to a truck (1), and a truck coupling (10) according to any one of the preceding claims connected to the draw beam (12).

10. A truck (1) comprising a truck coupling (10) according to any one of claims 1-8 or a draw beam arrangement (11) according to claim 9.

A method (200) of mounting a truck coupling (10) according to any one of claims 1-8 to a truck (1), the method comprising: inserting (201) the threaded shaft (110) through an opening (13) of the truck (1), threading (202) the castellated nut (120) onto the shaft (110) thereby connecting the truck coupling (10) to the truck (1), and sliding (204) the locking member (130) onto the shaft (110) such that the radially inwardly extending protrusions (132) and the radially outwardly extending protrusions (134) engage with the splines (112) and the crenellation slots (122), respectively, thereby providing a rotational locking of the castellated nut (120) in relation to the shaft (110).

A trailer coupling (20) comprising a nut connection arrangement (100) for connecting the trailer coupling (20) to a trailer (2), the nut connection arrangement (100) comprising: a threaded shaft (110) comprising a plurality of splines (112) extending along a longitudinal axis (LA) of the shaft (110) and being evenly distributed about a circumference of the shaft (110), a castellated nut (120) comprising a plurality of crenellation slots (122) evenly distributed about a circumference of the castellated nut (120), and being configured to be threaded onto the shaft (110) from an end of the shaft (110), and a locking member (130) comprising a plurality of radially inwardly extending protrusions (132) configured to engage a respective spline (112) in response to sliding the locking member onto the shaft (110) from the end of the shaft (110), and a plurality of radially outwardly extending protrusions (134) configured to engage a respective crenellation slot (122) in response to sliding the locking member (130) onto the shaft (110) from the end of the shaft (110) when the castellated nut (120) is threaded onto the shaft (110), wherein a number of the crenellation slots (122) is not evenly divisible by a number of splines (112), and wherein the number and an angular distribution of the crenellation slots (122) and the splines (112) are such that, irrespective of a rotational position of the castellated nut (120) in relation to the shaft (110) when the castellated nut (120) is threaded onto the shaft (110), for at least one rotational position of the locking member (130), the locking member (130) is slidable onto the shaft (110) such that the plurality of radially inwardly extending protrusions (132) and theplurality of radially outwardly extending protrusions (134) engage with the splines (112) and the crenellation slots (122), respectively, thereby providing a rotational locking of the castellated nut (130) in relation to the shaft (110).

13. A method (300) of mounting a trailer coupling (20) according to claim 12 to a trailer (2), the method comprising: inserting (301) the threaded shaft (110) through an opening (23) of the trailer (2), threading (302) the castellated nut (120) onto the shaft (110) thereby connecting the trailer coupling (20) to the trailer (2), and sliding (304) the locking member (130) onto the shaft (110) such that the radially inwardly extending protrusions (132) and the radially outwardly extending protrusions (134) engage with the splines (112) and the crenellation slots (122), respectively, thereby providing a rotational locking of the castellated nut (120) in relation to the shaft (110).
