Abstract

The present disclosure relates to a method of detecting an event involving a sports ball. The method comprises: receiving measurements, including a series of angular velocity measurements, of the sports ball from one or more sensors located in the sports ball; identifying a flight period in which the sports ball is substantially freely rotating based on the series of angular velocity measurements; identifying a launch period preceding the flight period in which the sports ball is subjected to an angular acceleration based on the series of angular velocity measurements; and making a determination with respect to a launch event based on measurements of the one or more sensors in the launch period and / or the flight period.
