Description

Electrically conductive silver ink compositionsTechnical field

[0001] The present invention relates to electrically conductive silver ink compositions, which have super high conductivity and are suitable for use in printed electronics applications. Background

[0002] Electrically conductive inks are widely used in the various applications including printed electronics. Ordinary electrically conductive inks comprise conductive fillers dispersed in a solvent-resin system.

[0003] Commercial industrial conductive inks are available with many different types of fillers (e.g., carbon, graphite, copper) . However, when a high conductivity is required, a silver ink is still the most favourable. Depending on the type of the silver particle, its coating, its combination with solvent-binder systems as well as other added chemical additives in the ink formulation, the final silver ink composition will have different conductivity range.

[0004] A highly conductive silver ink suitable for screen printing application typically contains high silver loading (≥70 wt%) . In order to achieve lowest attainable resistance, the printed sheets need to be dried at high temperature (> 150 ℃) for a defined period of time to allow the sintering process of the silver particles to take place. The sintering results in an excellent resistivity, however, the products are brittle and less flexible. Further, high drying temperature means high energy consumption, and therefore, higher process costs.

[0005] Silver nano particles, nano wires and equivalent have been reported in the literatures to have excellent conductivity. However, silver nano particles are very expensive and often involve extensive synthesis procedure which highly contribute to the complication of their commercialization to industrial level. Moreover, a conductive ink comprising silver nanoparticles often still needs to be dried / cured at high temperature (≥ 250 ℃) to achieve the low resistance, which is a disadvantage for high volume industrial scale application. Additionally, silver nano particles often lead to drastic viscosity increase of the ink limiting the silver concentration. A high concentration of silver nanoparticles will lead to inferior printability, a lower concentration leads to insufficient conductivity.

[0006] Currently commercially available highly conductive silver inks have sheet resistance value between 3 to 4 mOhm / sq / 25μm. A commercially available silver ink with sheet resistance below 2.5 mOhm / sq / 25μm is scarce, due to the nature of the process complexity.

[0007] Many commercial highly conductive silver inks use a chlorinated resins such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polyvinylidene chloride (PVDC) -or their copolymers to obtain low resistance. The decomposition reaction of chlorinated resin occurs at around 120 -150 ℃, which is a common drying temperature used in flexible printed electronic substrates. The desorption of chlorine ions having a large atomic radius develops conductivity because silver powders are closer together in the coating film, hence resulting in the low resistance. Example of such silver ink is Loctite ECI 1011. Nevertheless, Loctite ECI 1011 sheet resistance at 150 ℃ is around 3 –4 mOhm / sq / 25μm, which is still considerably high for more advance and newer printed electronics applications.

[0008] Therefore, there is a need for an electrically conductive silver ink which has, extremely high conductivity with sheet resistance of < 3 mOhm / sq / 25μm while the composition may be produced and processed in a “traditional” way of common commercial silver inks.Summary of the invention

[0030] The ink composition according to the present invention provides low curing / drying temperature and fast curing / drying time. The ink composition has a viscosity enabling easy processing.

[0031] Overall, the ink composition according to the present invention provides a superior performance (sheet resistance < 3 mOhm / sq / 25μm) , allowing a cheaper option ink with exceptional conductivity level. Moreover, superior conductivity of the ink allows thinner layers making the printed film more sustainable and lighter. Further, the ink composition has excellent resistance stability.

[0032] The electrically conductive silver ink composition according to the present invention comprise sub-micron size silver flakes or a mixture of nano-size silver particles and micron-size silver flakes.

[0033] In a highly preferred embodiment, the silver flakes, nano-size silver particles and micron-size silver flakes may be at least partially coated with a coating material, which protects the silver particles and flakes from oxidation and also act as a stabilizing agent to prevent particle aggregation.

[0034] The coating material may be selected from the group consisting of fatty acids, fatty acid esters, fatty acid salts and mixtures thereof.

[0036] Above defined particle size ranges are preferred because smaller particle size may lead to a highly viscous ink causing difficulties in printing process, whereas larger particle size may lead to low coverage causing poor conductivity and rougher, less smooth surface.

[0037] And or alternatively the sub-micron size silver flakes may have a specific surface area from 1.60 to 1.90 m2 / g, preferably 1.73 m2 / g, wherein the specific surface area is determined in accordance with the test method below.

[0038] Above defined specific surface area ranges are preferred because they provide ideal viscosity and conductivity for the ink according to the present invention.

[0044] The nano-size silver particles may be spherical nano-size silver particles having particle size D50 from 250nm to 500nm, preferably from 280nm to 450nm and more preferably from 320 to 400nm wherein the particle size is determined in accordance with the test method in the description.

[0045] And or alternatively the nano-size silver particles may have a specific surface area from 1.36 to 1.53 m2 / g, preferably about 1.5 m2 / g, wherein the specific surface area is determined in accordance with the test method in the description.

[0050] The micron size silver flakes may be silver flakes having particle size D50 from 1 μm to 10 μm, preferably from 1.5 to 5 μm and more preferably from 2 to 5 μm, wherein the particle size is determined in accordance with the test method in the description.

[0051] And or alternatively the micron size silver flakes may have a specific surface area from 0.7 to 1.4 m2 / g, preferably about 0.89 m2 / g, wherein the specific surface area is determined in accordance with the test method in the description.

[0052] And or alternatively the micron size silver flakes may have a tap density from 1.8 to 3 g / cm3, preferably about 2.33 g / cm3, wherein the tap density is determined in accordance with ISO 3953.

[0053] In highly preferred embodiment, the micron size silver flakes are silver flakes having particle size D50 from 1 μm to 10 μm, preferably from 1.5 to 5 μm and more preferably from 2 to 5 μm, wherein the particle size is determined in accordance with the test method in the description, and have a specific surface area from 0.7 to 1.4 m2 / g, preferably about 0.89 m2 / g, wherein the specific surface area is determined in accordance with the test method in the description, and have a tap density from 1.8 to 3 g / cm3, preferably about 2.33 g / cm3, wherein the tap density is determined in accordance with ISO 3953.

[0054] Suitable commercially available micron size silver flakes for use in the present invention include but are not limited to AT-AGF-3C from Entrepreneur.

[0055] The micron-size silver flakes may be present in the electrically conductive silver ink composition according to the present invention in a quantity from 40 to 60%by weight of the total weight of the composition, preferably from 41 to 55%, and more preferably from 42 to 52%.

[0056] Above defined silver particle quantities are preferred because they provide ideal conductivity for the ink composition according to the present invention. If the silver quantity is too low this may lead to a poor coverage and poor conductivity, whereas too high quantity may lead to poor adhesion properties and too viscous ink causing difficulties in printing process.

[0057] As used herein, the term "average particle size" refers to the D50 value of the cumulative volume distribution curve at which 50%by volume of the particles have a diameter less than said value. The average particle size is measured in the present invention through laser diffractometry preferably using Microtrac S3000 / S3500 available from Microtrac MRB. In this technique, the size of particles in suspensions or emulsions is measured using the diffraction of a laser beam, based on application of Mie theory. In the present invention, Mie theory or a modified Mie theory for non-spherical particles is applied and the particle sizes relate to scattering measurements at an angle from 0.02 to 135 degrees relative to the incident laser beam.

[0058] The tap density is determined in accordance with ISO 3953 typically using a 25 cm3 graduated glass cylinder. The principle of the method specified is tapping a specified amount of powder in a container by means of a tapping apparatus until no further decrease in the volume of the powder takes place. The mass of the powder divided by its volume after the test gives its tap density.

[0059] The specific surface area is measured by B. E. T nitrogen absorption. The measurement is carried out by measuring the adsorption-desorption isotherm of nitrogen on the surface of the material by means of the Brunauer-Emmet-Teller algorithm, a definite amount (accuracy 0.01mg) of powder is weighted in a sample tube. Subsequently the sample undergoes a series of heating and cooling runs from the evolution of the pressure in the sample tube and the amount of adsorbed nitrogen during different step is calculated; from this data the specific surface area is calculated and reported in m2 / g.

[0060] The electrically conductive silver ink composition according to the present invention comprises a chlorinated resin. The chlorinated resin provides adhesion and mechanical properties for the ink composition, and in addition, the resin aids to disperse the silver platelets.

[0061] The chlorinated resin is selected from the group consisting of polyvinylidene chloride, vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer, vinyl chloride-hydroxy acrylate copolymer, vinyl chloride-hydroxy acrylate-dicarboxylic ester copolymer, vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate-vinyl alcohol terpolymer, and mixtures thereof.

[0062] It has been found that a vinyl chloride with different functional groups, degree of functionalization, and their combination thereof, together with Ag flakes offer a sheet resistance below 2.5 mOhm / sq / 25μm with excellent adhesion properties on various substrates and especially on PET substate while having resistance stability at 85 ℃ / 85 RH for 1000h.
