[0002] 1

[0003] DEVICE FOR USING A SEALANT OR ADHESIVE SAUSAGE WITH A STANDARD CTG GUN

[0004] TECHNICAL FIELD

[0005] 5 The disclosure relates to the field of containers for sealants or adhesives, and guns for application of sealants or adhesives, and more specifically to a device for using a sealant or adhesive sausage with a standard CTG gun, to a kit comprising one or any combination of the parts of the device, and to a method of use of the device.

[0006] BACKGROUND

[0007] 10 Nowadays, sealants and adhesives are contained and sold either in single-use cartridge (CTG) packaging (for example plastic-based cartridge, but alternative materials can be used, like aluminum-based cartridge), typically in 300ml, or in singleuse aluminum foil-based sausages, typically in 100ml-300ml range. The Application of a sealant or adhesive on the surface of different materials requires an accessory, which is a gun that allows to apply the necessary quantity.

[0008] For application of a sealant or adhesive contained in a CTG packaging, the gun is a specific gun for CTG cartridge, which is also referred to as "standard CTG gun" in the present disclosure. A standard CTG may be a skeleton gun or a semi-barrel gun. FIG. 1 shows a photo of an example of a commercially available skeleton gun and FIG.

[0009] 20 2 shows a photo of an example of a commercially available semi-barrel gun. For application of a sealant of adhesive contained in an aluminum sausage, a specific gun, different from standard CTG guns, is used. FIG. 3 shows a photo of an example of a commercially available specific gun for aluminum sausage.

[0010] When the Cartridge or the Sausages are empty, there is significant more packaging waste in weight & volume generated with the plastic CTG cartridges versus the aluminum foil sausages:

[0011] - In weight: 3 times more with 60g / CTG of waste against 20g of aluminum sausage packaging waste.

[0012] - In volume: 7 times more with 424ml of volume waste for empty CTG 30 against 60ml of volume for empty sausage.PRO3508

[0013] 2

[0014] However, today the use of aluminum foil sausage is limited by the use of an expensive manual gun, pneumatic gun, or electric gun (the price of a manual gun for aluminum foil sausage typically ranges from 30€ to 70€, that of a pneumatic or electric gun typically ranges from 200€ to 300€, whereas the price for a skeleton CTG 5 gun typically ranges from 5€ to 7€ and the price for a semi-barrel CTG gun typically ranges from 10€ to 20€) and by the availability of aluminum foil sausage mainly in a format with a high quantity of adhesive or sealant (sausage of mini 400ml / 600g but the standard sausage size is 600ml / 900g versus a standard CTG 300m l / 450g). Indeed, some customers, typically non-professional customers, use sealant or adhesive for 10 small works (for example re-making the sealing of a shower or bathtub), and thus do not consume all the sealant or adhesive for one application. The remaining sealant or adhesive may then remain stored in its packaging for a long period of time, and may thereby become dry and no more usable.

[0015] There is thus a need for improved solutions for the application of sealant or adhesive with a gun.

[0016] SUMMARY

[0017] It is therefore proposed a device for using a sealant or adhesive sausage with a standard CTG gun. The device comprises a rigid tube, an adaptive accessory, and a pusher accessory. [0051] BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0052] Non-limiting examples will now be described in reference to the accompanying 10 drawings, where:

[0053] FIG.s 1 to 3 show examples of existing guns for application of sealant or adhesive; and

[0054] FIG.s 4 to 7 illustrate the device.

[0055] DETAILED DESCRIPTION

[0056] It is thus provided a device for using a sealant or adhesive sausage with a standard CTG gun. The device comprises a rigid tube, an adaptive accessory, and a pusher accessory. The rigid tube has a diameter (i.e. external diameter) adapted for being inserted and maintained in the gun and configured to hold a standard sealant or adhesive sausage. The adaptive accessory has one side with a shape adapted for 20 being tightly inserted and maintained in a first extremity of the rigid tube. The adaptive accessory has another side with a shape adapted for being inserted and maintained in a nose of the gun. The adaptive accessory comprises a passageway for extrusion (i.e. expulsion) of the sealant or adhesive from the sausage. The passageway is connected to an opening on said another side. The opening is adapted for extrusion of the sealant or adhesive using a nozzle. The pusher accessory is adapted for being tightly inserted in the rigid tube at a second extremity of the rigid tube and for receiving a plunger of the gun. The pusher accessory is adapted for sliding toward the first extremity of the rigid tube upon action of the plunger so as to cause extrusion of the sealant or adhesive.

[0057] 30 The device forms an improved solution for the application of sealant and adhesive with a gun. Indeed, the device allows the use of a standard sealant orPRO3508

[0058] 6

[0059] adhesive sausage (i.e. by "standard" it is meant the usual sausages discussed above, which are commercially available) but with a standard CTG gun (i.e. the usual commercially available semi-barrel or skeleton CTG guns, i.e. any gun existing on the market with any nozzle existing on the market) as discussed above). As previously 5 discussed, using sealant or adhesive contained in sausages (formed in aluminum foil or any alternative material) is advantageous in terms of optimizing (reducing) the waste in weight and volume as compared to standard plastic CTG cartridges. However, this advantage is currently not fully exploited since the use of sausage guns is limited, notably due to their expensive price, and standard CTG guns are more used 10 due to their more affordable price. The proposed device solves this problem by allowing the use of sausages with standard CTG guns. Besides, by allowing the use of standard CTG sausages (due to the dimensions of the rigid tube, notably its internal diameter), there is no need to manufacture specific sausages for the proposed device: commercially available sausages are usable. Furthermore, the proposed device allows the use of small aluminum foil sausages (for example containing a volume as small as 100ml), for single applications where a reduced amount of sealant or adhesive is used. These smaller sausages avoid or at least reduce the problem of storage of partially empty sealant or adhesive containers, which can cause the inside product to dry. This is notably particularly useful for non-professional customers that 20 might need to use small amounts of sealant or adhesive for small works.

[0060] These advantages are achieved by the proposed device. Indeed, the rigid tube has a diameter which, on the one hand, is adapted for receiving and holding a standard sealant or adhesive sausage, and on the other hand, is adapted for being placed and maintained in a standard CTG gun (e.g. semi-barrel or skeleton). The sausage can be open at one of its extremities (as done classically in the art) and placed in the rigid tube so that its opening faces the adaptive accessory. The latter has a shape adapted for, on one side, being inserted and maintained tightly in the rigid tube (thus avoiding sealant or adhesive leakage in the tube), and on the other side being firmly inserted and maintained in the nose of the gun. Thus, the assembly of 30 the rigid tube and adaptive accessory is firmly placed and maintained in the standard gun, as a standard CTG syringe would be. On the other side of the rigid tube, thePRO3508

[0061] 7

[0062] pusher accessory can be placed and maintained tightly in the rigid tube. This second accessory is adapted to receive the plunger of the gun. During use, the plunger thus abuts against the pusher accessory (as it would abut against the bottom of a CTG syringe in standard use), and, upon action of the user (again as classically done with 5 a standard gun) the plunger moves forward toward the nose and thus causes the pusher accessory (which may also be called "plunger accessory") to slide forward in the rigid tube. This results in the pusher accessory pressing the sausage at its closed extremity, thus extruding the sealant or adhesive at the open extremity of the sausage, and through the passageway and opening of the adaptive accessory, for 10 extrusion and application of the sealant / adhesive.

[0063] Examples of the device and of its parts will now be described in more details with reference to FIG.s 4 to 7 which illustrate examples of the rigid tube, adaptive accessory, and pusher accessory.

[0064] FIG. 4 shows an example of the device, which thus comprises the following parts: the rigid tube 1, the adaptive accessory 2 (which may also be referred to as "nose accessory"), and the pusher accessory 3. Several views (exploded view E, assembly view A, and side view S) of the device are shown. As can be seen on the figure, the three parts of the device are different parts that can be assembled together for use, but that are not permanently fixed from each other. These parts 20 may therefore be provided (e.g. manufactured, stored, packages and / or sold) separately. The adaptive accessory 2 has one side with a shape adapted for being tightly inserted and maintained in the rigid tube 1, at either extremity of the rigid tube 1, as can be seen the assembly view A. The pusher accessory 3 has a shape adapted for being tightly inserted in the tube 1 (at either extremity) and for sliding within the tube 1 toward the other extremity upon action of the plunger of the gun, as illustrated by the assembly view A.

[0065] FIG. 5 shows more detailed views of the rigid tube 1. As can be seen on FIG.s 4- 5, the rigid tube 1 may be a hollow cylinder having a cylinder geometry (e.g. perfectly cylindrical or substantially perfectly cylindrical up to manufacturing tolerances). The 30 rigid tube may thus be symmetrical so that both the adaptive accessory 2 and the pusher accessory 3 can be tightly inserted and maintained at either extremity of thePRO3508

[0066] 8

[0067] rigid tube 1 (either end opening of the tube 1). In other words, said first extremity and second extremity of the rigid tube 1 are identical, allowing insertion of, interchangeably, the adaptive accessory 2 or the pusher accessory 3. As shown in FIG.s 4-5, the rigid tube 1 may have an internal diameter comprised between 50.1mm 5 and 50.5mm (e.g. a diameter of 50.3mm with a tolerance of 0.2mm) and / or a length comprised between 185mm and 195mm (e.g. a length of 190mm with a tolerance of 5mm) and / or a thickness (i.e. thickness of the cylindrical outer wall) comprised between 0.9mm and 1.1 mmfe.g. a thickness of 1mm with a tolerance of 0.1mm). Thus, the external diameter equals 52.3mm with a tolerance of 0.2 mm. The internal 10 diameter Di allows to insert a standard sausage in the tube 1 with a minimal free space. The external diameter allows compatibility (maintained insertion of the tube in the gun) with all CTG guns in the market. The thickness is thus equal to (De-Di) / 2. These values of internal and external diameter, length and thickness, together with the adaptive accessory 2 and the pusher accessory 3, allow the tube 1 to be inserted in the cylindrical portion of the standard gun (where a CTG cartridge is normally inserted) and to be maintained there without movement, or at least without any movement that would disturb the normal application of the sealant or adhesive (i.e. the device is as firmly maintained in the gun as would be a standard CTG gun in the standard use of the gun). The rigid tube may be integrally formed with cardboard 20 (and thus is recyclable), i.e. cardboard having sufficient rigidity for use with the gun for sealant or adhesive application. Alternative materials also providing sufficient rigidity may alternatively be used, for example rigid plastic. If in rigid plastic, the rigid tube 1 may be transparent. Be it in cardboard or in other material, the rigid tube 1 may comprise, on the inner side of its wall a coating in a material that facilitates 25 sliding of the pusher accessory 3. The rigid tube may also comprise an outside coating which is waterproof (notably for use of sealant which may require use of water for smoothing) and / or which is customizable (with a logo and / or a brand, or the like). The rigid tube may for example be printed on its outside / outer wall or having a label on its outside / outer wall.PRO3508

[0068] 9

[0069] FIG. 6 shows detailed views of the adaptive accessory 2. The adaptive accessory shown is integrally formed, for example in plastic, e.g. 100% recyclable (e.g. HDPE), for example by injection-molding. It has a generally cylindrical shape.

[0070] The adaptive accessory 2 comprises a first side 20 which has a shape adapted 5 for being tightly inserted and maintained in either extremity of the rigid tube 1.

[0071] Specifically, the shape may be a generally cylindrical shape having a suitable diameter adapted for insertion and maintain in either extremity of the rigid tube 1. The diameter may for example equal 50.1mm, where of the internal diameter Di of the rigid tube 1 may be 50.2mm (up to the tolerances indicated in the figures), which 10 allows tight insertion of the adaptive accessory 2 in either extremity of the tube 1.

[0072] These diameter values allow to maintain the adaptive accessory 2 in the rigid tube 1.

[0073] Maintaining the adaptive accessory 2 in the rigid tube 1 by preventing it from being pushed further in the tube 1 may also be achieved by the protruding portion 24, which is an outside protruding ring 24 separating the two sides 20 and 22. The protruding ring 24 has a diameter equal to the external diameter De of the rigid tube 1 (up to the tolerances indicated in the figures), such that upon insertion of the side 20 of the adaptive accessory 2 in the rigid tube 1, the protruding ring 24 abuts the wall of the rigid tube 1 and prevents further insertion of the adaptive accessory 2 in the rigid tube 1.

[0074] 20 The adaptive accessory 2 comprises another side 22. This other side 22 has a shape adapted for being inserted and maintained in the nose of the standard CTG gun, be it a semi-barrel gun or a skeleton gun. Indeed, this shape may be generally cylindrical and may have a diameter suitable for being inserted and maintained in the nose of the standard CTG gun. For example, that diameter may equal 50.1mm (up to the tolerances shown in the figures), which substantially corresponds to the diameter of the cylindrical extremity of a standard CTG cartridge and allows it to rest on the nose of a standard CTG gun. Although the side 22 shown in the figures is substantially cylindrical with a diameter of 50.1mm (up to the tolerances shown in the figures), it is to be understood that other shapes of the side 22 may be contemplated. For 30 example, the side 22 may have a cylindrical shape of 50.1mm diameter (up to the same tolerances shown in the figures) up to a certain length above the protrudingPRO3508

[0075] 10

[0076] ring 24 and then having a general conical shape up to the protrusion 26. Thus 22 may not be generally straight / cylindrical, but only cylindrical at its basis to be maintained in the gun nose and then generally conical up to the protrusion 26.

[0077] As can be seen on FIG. 6, the shape of the other side 22 also allows for insertion 5 of that side 22 in the rigid tube 1: it may have the same generally cylindrical shape with the same diameter as the side 20 and may thus be equally inserted in the rigid tube 1 and maintained there. This may be done for packaging and allows compact packaging. Furthermore, it allows, still for packaging, to store one or more nozzle in the tube, between the adaptive accessory 2 in that inverted position and the pusher 10 accessory 3.

[0078] The sides 20 and 22 as well as the protruding ring 24 may be integrally formed and altogether form the body 28 of the adaptive accessory, as shown in FIG. 6. That body 28 comprises a passageway 260, for extrusion of the sealant or adhesive from the sausage (not shown on the figures), the extrusion being according to direction D shown in FIG. 6, which is, as known, also the direction of pushing of the plunger of the gun. Passageway 260 is connected to an opening 26 on the other side 22. Opening 26 has a shape of substantially a hollow cylinder, the hollow part of the cylinder being the ending of the passageway 260. The opening 26 may be, as shown in FIG. 6, formed by a threaded protrusion 26 protruding out of side 22 in direction D. The threaded 20 protrusion is configured for receiving a nozzle (not shown in the figure) by threaded engagement, such that the opening 26 is adapted for extrusion of the sealant or adhesive using a nozzle, as classically done in the art. The thread may be adapted to standard existing nozzle or may be adapted to a specific nozzle that can thus be also provided with the other parts of the device. The threaded opening 26 may for example have a thread pitch M15x2.5 to be compatible with all existing cartridge nozzles in the market (such as V nozzles, flattened nozzles, smoothing nozzles).

[0079] As shown in FIG. 6, said one side 20 comprises a concave, preferably conical, cavity 280 formed in the body 28, around the inside extremity of the passageway 260. This cavity 280 has thus a shape adapted for receiving the open extremity of the 30 sausage and forcing the sealant or adhesive extruded from the sausage through the passageway 260, to maximize the amount of product coming out and minimize soilingPRO3508

[0080] 11

[0081] of the adaptive accessory. The cavity may have a smooth surface, which facilitates cleaning after use (e.g. a single wipe is sufficient).

[0082] FIG. 7 shows further views of the pusher accessory 3. The pusher accessory shown is integrally formed, for example in plastic, for example 100% recyclable (e.g.

[0083] 5 HDPE), for example by injection-molding. It has a generally cylindrical shape and a main body 30. The main body 30 has a shape adapted for being tightly inserted in the rigid tube at either extremity of the rigid tube 1 (i.e. for use, the pusher accessory 3 is inserted in the extremity of the tube 1 opposite to that in which the adaptive accessory 1 is inserted). Indeed, as can be seen in the figure, the main body 30 10 comprises a two outward ring portions R1 having a diameter (50.4mm up to the tolerances shown in the figure) suitable for being tightly inserted and maintained in the rigid tube 1. The main body 30 also comprises a central ring portion R2, of smaller diameter (outside diameter 43.9 mm, inside diameter 41mm, up to the tolerances shown in the figure). Each side of the central ring portion R2 forms a disc surface portion (of diameter 41 mm, up to the tolerances shown in the figure), which is adapted for receiving the plunger of the gun. This causes sliding the pusher accessory 3 within the tube 1, toward the other extremity of the tube 1, the one receiving the adaptive accessory. The sliding causes compression of the sausage and thereby extrusion of the sealant or adhesive through its open part, as known in the art. 20 As shown in the figure, the pusher accessory 3 comprises a centered opening 32 formed within the main body 30, which allows air evacuation during action of the plunger and thus prevents damage to the sausage and / or to the rigid tube 1. The centered opening also provides improved accommodation of the sausage during insertion in the rigid tube and thus facilitates insertion of the sausage. The diameter of the centered opening 32 may be smaller than or equal to 25mm, which avoids the plunger of the gun going through the centered opening, and this for any currently available CTG gun. The main body forms two inside concave cavities around the centered opening, with one cavity on each side of the ring R2. Each cavity designates the conical empty space formed by the main body 30 between rings R1 and R2 (on 30 each side of R2). These cavities allow reception of the plunger on either side of the pusher accessory 3. Furthermore, the concave shape of these cavities allows thePRO3508

[0084] 12

[0085] centering of the plunger and a perfect fit with the diameter of the plunger. It also allows to center the accumulated folded material (foil, e.g. aluminum) of the sausage along the extrusion of the sausage / action of the plunger. The pusher accessory thus has a symmetrical shape so that both sides of the pusher accessory are configured 5 for receiving the plunger. This notably allows, once all the sealant / adhesive has been extruded from the sausage, such that the pusher accessory 3 is closer to the extremity of the rigid tube 1 in which the adaptive accessory 2 is inserted than it is to the extremity where the pusher accessory was initially inserted (before action of the plunger), to place the pusher accessory 3 at the extremity to which it is closer and to 10 install the adaptive accessory 2 at the other extremity (i.e. switch positions of the pusher accessory 3 and adaptive accessory 1 for installing a new sausage). This provides simplicity of use.

[0086] The parts of the device, i.e. the pusher accessory 3, the adaptive accessory 2, and the rigid tube 1, may be fabricated and / or sold separately and independently, for example as a kit comprising one or any combination of these parts (e.g. all three parts). It is also provided such a kit, which thus comprises the adaptive accessory 2 and / or the pusher accessory 3 and / or the rigid tube 1. The kit may further comprise one or more nozzle (for example stored inside the rigid tube 1 as discussed above) adapted for being mounted on the adaptive accessory 2 as discussed above.

[0087] 20 It is also provided a method of use of the device. The method of use is for application of a sealing or adhesive using the device. The method of use comprises the following step:

[0088] - inserting the pusher accessory at the bottom of the rigid tube;

[0089] - inserting a sealant or adhesive sausage in the rigid tube;

[0090] - opening the sausage by cutting right under a clip of the sausage;

[0091] - inserting the adaptive accessory in the rigid tube so that the open side of the sausage faces the adaptive accessory;

[0092] - positioning the rigid tube in a standard CTG gun at the standard position of a CTG cartridge, so that the pusher accessory faces the plunger of the 30 gun and so that the adaptive accessory is located at the nose of the gun;PRO3508

[0093] 13

[0094] - installing a nozzle on the adaptive accessory, optionally by screwing the nozzle to the threaded protrusion of the adaptive accessory; and - using the gun to extrude sealant or adhesive from the sausage.

[0095] Using the gun to extrude the sealant or adhesive may be a single operation, or 5 several operations, of the gun to extrude all of or only a part of the sealant or adhesive, depending on the use case, as known in the art.

[0096] As previously discussed, the pusher accessory may have a symmetrical shape so that both sides of the pusher accessory are configured for receiving the plunger. In such case the method of use may further comprise, after extrusion of substantially 10 all the sealant from the sausage, the pusher accessory being then positioned substantially positioned at the first extremity of the rigid tube:

[0097] - removing rigid tube from the gun and removing the adaptive accessory and the sausage from the rigid tube;

[0098] - optionally, cleaning the adaptive accessory;

[0099] - inserting another sealant or adhesive sausage in the rigid tube;

[0100] - opening the other sausage by cutting right under a clip of the other sausage;

[0101] - inserting the adaptive accessory at the second extremity of the rigid tube so that the open side of the sausage faces the adaptive accessory; 20 - positioning the rigid tube in the standard CTG gun at the standard position of a CTG cartridge, so that the pusher accessory faces the plunger of the gun and so that the adaptive accessory is located at the nose of the gun;

[0102] - optionally, installing a new nozzle on the adaptive accessory, optionally 25 by screwing the new nozzle to the threaded protrusion of the adaptive accessory; and

[0103] - using the gun to extrude sealant or adhesive from the other sausage.
