[0003] The invention relates to pop-top roof, pop-up-roofs and other tent constructions which flexibly add living space to a vehicle. More particularly, the invention relates to a pop-up roof with a tent construction configured for being mounted to the roof of a vehicle such as a camper van, or a trailer.
[0004] BACKGROUND
[0005] There are multiple solutions available for vehicles, such as camper vans, which add living space in a flexible manner. In the context of this invention, a first type of such a vehicle room extension comprises an automotive rooftop tent, which is usually configured for being mounted on a vehicle roof, without changing the vehicle's structure. Usually special mounts are fastened to the vehicle roof, which support an aftermarket tent-like construction which may be popped-out or unfolded, when the vehicle is parked. In a closed position the tent is stowed away, which minimizes drag while driving and which provides protection for the tent. Often, a bed, or a construction for adding a bed is included in the tent to accommodate at least one person. Often, a cover made of a hard shell is part of the tent and serves as cover when the tent is stowed away.
[0006] A second type of extension comprises a tent which is configured or adaptable for attachment on a roof of a vehicle, more or less permanently. In this case an aperture in the vehicle’s roof may be provided which allows access to the tent when in unfolded position, and vice versa. As the roof of the vehicle itself pops-up when unfolding the tent, these extensions are usually referred to as pop-up roofs or pop-top roof. In contrast to another known extension system, the so-called rising roof, a pop-up roof usually pops up at one side and hinges at the opposite side using a tilting system. The pop-up roof may pop up at the front, the rear or at one side of the vehicle.
[0007] Hereinafter both types of tents, a rooftop tent and a pop-up roof are referred to as “tent”. The advantages of the types of tents described are numerous. The tent is typically easy and simple to set up. Camping is possible wherever you are allowed to park, so it provides lots of opportunities to travel and rest in a comfortable manner. A bed in a tent provides extra sleeping space, high above the ground. The view from the top of the vehicle is alsomuch appreciated. Being off the ground also provides protection against bugs and animals and a rain will not cause flooding.
[0008] It is an object of the present invention to provide further improvements of a pop-up roof and / or rooftop tent for mounting on a vehicle. It is a further object of the invention to maximize, optimize and / or expand space available in or on a vehicle. It is yet a further object of the invention to provide a safe and easy to set up construction of the tent, and to maximize stability in closed and in unfolded position. The objects are mainly aimed at optimizing recreational vehicles, such as camper vans, caravans, tent trailers, or trailers.

[0055] In summary, the invention comprises a construction for unfolding and folding of a vehicle roof tent, whereby a support plate is movable from a stowed position to an extended position by flipping over or sliding outwards. The construction has a stationary roof mountable beam, and a cover supporting beam which supports a cover for the tent. The cover is automatically opened and closed. In a preferred embodiment the cover supporting beam is rotatably connected near its front side at the top of a first inwards folding one-fold first folding arm which is rotatably connected at the front of the roof mountable beam, the cover supporting beam is preferably rotatably connected at the rear to a scissoring rear lifting device which is rotatably connected to the rear of the roof mountable beam, the first folding arm is preferably configured for being unfolded and folded by an electrically actuated telescopic strut which is engaged with the first folding arm. Further details and embodiments are disclosed hereinafter.

[0069] As an example for the application of the invented tent we take a camper van or often called recreation vehicle, RV. In particular the tent is most suitable for a camper van with a roof opening. Hereinafter the camper van and variations are referred to as “vehicle”. The invented tent may, however, be configured on other types of vehicles such as trailers, buses, or caravans.
[0070] In a closed folded position the invented tent is stowed away under a top roof cover of the vehicle. By unfolding the tent a large space is created especially by creating a lot of headroom. The particulars of the invented tent comprises that it may extend beyond the upper periphery of the campervan’s roof, i.e. extra tent space next to, in front of or behind the vehicle, thus creating even extra space. The invented tent is furthermore innovative because the tent is folded upwards by rotation. A hinge system is configured at the roof of the vehicle. When the tent is folded it is preferably closed off by a canopy, which may comprise a hard cover or a removable or hinged part of the roof of the vehicle. In unfolded position of the tent, the canopy may provide extra stability to the tent, extra privacy, and / or additional shelter from rain or sunshine for the occupants of the vehicle.The extra space extending beyond the periphery is preferably provided with a rigid support plate on which a bed may be installed, thus providing additional resting space for the occupants. When the tent is stowed away the support plate may be configured to form a kind of inner roof for the vehicle’s occupants. The bottom of the support plate may be configured with e.g. a roof lining for this purpose.
[0071] The support plate may be connected to the folding mechanism of the tent. In this embodiment it may initiate the unfolding motion of the tent when brought to extended space, and it may initiate the folding motion of the tent when brought back to its stowed position.
[0072] The roof tent construction may be on top of a closed roof of the vehicle. In this case access to the tent is made possible by for example a ladder mounted or mountable to the vehicle.

[0074] The invention proposes several methods of bringing the bed to the extended space, created by the unfolding of the tent.
[0075] A first method comprises that a support plate is rotatably connected to a side of the roof or a construction attached to the roof of the vehicle. After the tent is unfolded, or while the tent is unfolding, the support plate is flipped over, such as in 180 degrees from a stowed position to an open / extended position. In the open position, a mattress may be laid on the support plate to form a bed. Optionally the mattress may be attached to the support plate in upside down position, which removes out the need of laying a mattress on the support plate afterwards.
[0076] A second method comprises that a sliding mechanism is provided on the roof, such that the support plate does not change orientation when sliding in or out. This way, when configured as a bed, the bedding remains in place, thus allowing to keep the bed made, whether the tent is in in closed / folded or unfolded position. There is no need for laying a mattress afterward. The support plate is preferably slidable outward using rails.
[0077] A third method comprises a combination of flipping over of the support plate and horizontally sliding of the support plate. In this case the support plate may first be flipped over and then extended further outward from the periphery of the vehicle. Extra space may be provided by an unfolded tent with a bigger footprint.
[0078] Alternatively, the support plate is first extended horizontally and then flipped over.In the above described methods the support plate may be positioned in a default stowed position as close to the rooftop of the vehicle to decrease the height of the roof tent construction in stowed position as much as possible.

[0080] By using a lifting mechanism, the support plate may be raised from a stowed position to an intermediate position before applying any of the previous extending methods for the support plate.
[0081] The tent comprises a folding mechanism, a tent canvas (a cloth), rods or ribs for providing shape and keeping the canvas taunt. The ribs and / or arches may be made of various materials, such as solid or inflatable material. The folding mechanism is configured for moving the ribs into place to maximize the volume of the tent. In a preferred embodiment, the tent is in a way unfolded like a fan shaped awning whereby the ribs rotate around a fixed rotation axis connected to the roof, a construction on the roof, or to the support plate. In unfolded position the support plate extends horizontally from the side (or from the front or back) of the vehicle and it may be constructed such that it holds it in this position, even with a load. However, to provide a secure stable support of the support plate, one or more vertical poles may be provided at the outside corners of the support plate. These poles may be installed manually, or may be collapsable and form part of the folding mechanism or support plate. These poles may also be telescopic, to save space and / or to compensate for an uneven ground on which they rest.
[0082] Straps may be provided to secure the tent canvas to the support plate and / or folding mechanism, when unfolded.
[0083] The tent canvas may be provided with one or more ventilation holes, which may be closed or opened at will.
[0084] A problem may occur when folding the tent back into its stowed position covering the roof opening. Collapsing of the ribs implies that the volume of the tent decreases rather rapidly. This may cause bulging of the tent canvas. This in turn may cause to get the tent canvas stuck between the cover and the vehicle’s roof when completely folded. To prevent this over pressure, holes or valves may be provide in the tent canvas. However, when these holes of valves are closed off by the user, we disclose an optional solution described as follows.
[0085] Spanning from one side to the other in the direction of the ribs, an elastic band may be provided or attached which pulls critical parts of the tent canvas inward. This way the tentcanvas will automatically fold in the right direction, being inward and thereby preventing the canvas from getting stuck in the mechanism and / or between the cover and the roof. Operating the unfolding and folding of the tent and / or the lifting of the roof cover may be performed manually by a user, and / or whole or partially automatically, controlled by the user. In the latter case the operation may be assisted by one or more electric motors, hydraulics or the like, whereby a power source may be configured.
[0086] FIGURE 1 shows an example construction 100 for unfolding and folding of a roof tent in closed position, using a folding arm 120 to lift a cover supporting beam 101. Roof mountable beam 101 is mountable to e.g. the roof of a vehicle. In closed position, and it forms the basis / frame of the construction 100. A telescopic strut 110 is pivotably connected to roof mountable beam 101 with pivot pin 111 at the rear of roof mountable beam 101. Extendable rod 113 of telescopic strut 110 is connected to a lifting guide member 124 by a pin-slot connection. To initiate the unfolding of folding arm 120, telescopic strut extends rod 113 from cylinder 112, preferably in an automated manner powered by an electric motor (not shown). Claims
CLAIMS1. A construction for a foldable tent comprising a tent canvas, the construction configured for unfolding and folding said canvas and for keeping the canvas taut when unfolded, the construction configured for being mounted on top of a vehicle, whereby the tent is configured for being unfolded from a closed position to an open position extending beyond the periphery of the roof and for being folded from the open position to the closed position within the periphery of the roof, characterized in that,the construction is configured with a support plate which is configured for being moved from a stowed position to an extended position, by flipping over or sliding outwards, substantially away from the periphery of the roof, while the tent is being unfolded or when the tent is unfolded, and which is configured for moving back into its stowed position before the tent is folded or while the tent is being folded.
2. The construction according to claim 1, characterized in that the construction comprises a cover configured for covering the tent when in closed position, and configured for being opened and closed, whereby a stationary roof mountable beam is mountable to the vehicle roof, and a cover supporting beam is configured for supporting the cover.
3. The construction according to claim 2, characterized in the cover supporting beam is rotatably connected near its front side at the top of a first inwards folding one-fold first folding arm which is rotatably connected at the front of the roof mountable beam, the cover supporting beam being rotatably connected at the rear to a scissoring rear lifting device which is rotatably connected to the rear of the roof mountable beam, the first folding arm configured for being unfolded and folded by an electrically actuated first telescopic strut which is engaged with a part of the first folding arm beneath the folding point, thereby respectively lifting and lowering the front of the cover.
4. The construction according to claim 3, characterized in that the first telescopic strut engages with the first folding arm through a lift guide member which is rotatably connected to the part of the first folding arm beneath the folding point, and to the first telescopic strut with a pin-slot connection, and which is configuredfor supporting lifting of the first folding arm beyond the dead center, by rotating the lift guide member which then pushes the first folding arm up from the guide track.
5. The construction according to claim 2, characterized in that the first telescopic arm is rotatably connected to the cover supporting beam at one end, and rotatably connected to the roof mountable beam at the other end, and configured for lifting the cover supporting beam by extending, and lowering the cover supporting beam by retracting.
