A fracture is a break or a crack in a bone. A fracture occurs when force exerted against a bone is stronger than the bone can structurally withstand. The most common sites for bone fractures are the wrist, ankle and hip.

Axial intramedullary screw for the osteosynthesis of long bones

An axial intramedullary screw having a straight cylindrical outer surface for the operative treatment of long bones, the screw having two tips and a screw thread extending between the tips. At each of the tips there is a connection portion for screwdriver. The screw thread is used for cutting into the cortical bone of the medullary canal and due to the screwdriver connection at both ends it can be driven from either end through the cortical bone. This allows a method to be used in which the screw is threaded into one portion of a bone fragment and then after connecting a further bone fragment at the fracture site, screwed in a different direction into that further fragment. The screw also includes a transverse screw hole at one or both ends for the passage of an interlocking transverse screw therethrough.

Fracture Fixation System and Method

The invention relates to a system for stabilizing a bone fracture and methods for applying the system. The system includes a device with two anchorable members with an intervening connector and a passageway through the device. The anchorable members have a constrained non-anchoring configuration and a released anchoring configuration. The anchoring configuration includes a radially-expanded structure such as a plurality of struts. After implantation across a fracture site, the anchorable members are released from their linearly constrained configuration, and structural features radially self-expand, anchoring the device across the fracture. A flowable bone-filling material may be conveyed into the passageway of the device after implantation. The composition fills the space within the expanded structures of the anchorable members and flows into space surround the device, stabilizing it further in the implantation site.

Apparatus for the fixed-angle fixation and compression of a fracture site or osteotomy of a bone includes a bone plate having a plurality of holes and bone screws with a threaded head. The bone screws accommodated in the holes are screwed into the bone. At least one of the holes is a combination of two circular holes of different diameter. As screwing of the bone screw into the bone proceeds through a final stage, engagement of the threads on the head with threads in the combination hole effects relative longitudinal displacement between the plate and the bone whereby it is possible to simplify simultaneous fixed angle fixation and compression of the fracture or osteotomy with use of a single screw. Threads on the head of the bone screw engage threads in the hole which is a combination of the two hole to effect relative motions.

Implant device for applying compression across a fracture site

A fracture fixation implant formed from a single piece of material bent in loop form to provide juxtaposed first and second legs joined by a bend. The first leg is dimensional and configured to be implanted within a bone to extend across a fracture in the bone, the second leg extending backwardly from the bend and having a length to extend on an outer surface of the bone across the fracture. The implant exits from the bone at the bend, such that application of a pulling force on the second leg produces compression across the fracture. The second leg is flat and is provided with a plurality of holes in which bone screws can be installed to secure the second leg directly to the bone and maintain the compression across the fracture. The implant avoids the use of washers.

Method of fracture fixation

An external fixator includes a main body and an outrigger for extending over a fractured joint, such as a wrist joint. The main body can be positioned next to a right arm, or flipped over and positioned next to a left arm. The outrigger is attachable to extend either to the left or to the right of the main body, as appropriate. The distal body is connected to the main body with an adjustable securement section which provides six degrees of adjustment freedom. The outrigger is attached to the main body through a slide plate in a dual rail configuration which provides two dimensions of adjustment. Fragment pin supports ride in a track of the outrigger, and provide seven degrees of adjustment freedom for directed fixation of fragments at the fracture site. The outrigger is pivotally adjustable relative to the main body, and includes track portions separated by a wrap around angle. The major components of the fixator are molded of plastic. A surgical technique using the fixator includes immobilizing the joint for an initial healing duration and retaining fragment pins in place during a secondary healing duration.

Apparatus and method for treatment of long bone fractures

InactiveUS20050043659A1Enhance and accelerate healingElectrotherapyFractureMuscle tissueActive contraction
An apparatus and method for treating a long bone fracture in the limb of an animal wherein a non-invasive technique is provided for intermittently inducing a shortening in length of the skeletal musculature surrounding the long bone, whereby a compressive force may be intermittently applied to the fractured bone. Suitably a radial inward force is applied substantially fully around the circumference to the limb, by an inflatable cuff or sleeve, that is transmitted to the surrounding muscles. Alternatively, electrical signals cause active contraction of the musculature. The treatment may include the application of about 55 to 65 compressions each day for at least 10 days, and commencing within about 7 days of the fracture being sustained. The compressions, applied with frequency in the range of 0.05 Hz to 2 Hz, are desirably just short of that which produces fracture site pain and the intensity of the compressions may be increased between treatment sessions, consistent with heating.

In vivo degradable and absorbable metal encirclement device for bone fracture internal fixation

The invention discloses an in vivo degradable and absorbable metal encirclement device for bone fracture internal fixation, which consists of a single claw-shaped fixing part, or a plurality of claw-shaped fixing parts and connecting plates combined together alternately. The encirclement device is prepared from a degradable metal material. The encirclement device tightly encircles a bone fracture part through a fixed claw to realize engagement alignment of broken bones; the connecting plates of the encirclement device connect the claw-shaped fixing parts together to form a shape matched with that of a bone. When the bone fracture part is healed up, the connecting plates of the encirclement device are degraded gradually, and when the bone fracture part has the mechanical strength of a normal bone, claw-shaped fixing ends of the encirclement device lose the fixing effect, become fragments coated by muscles and fibrous tissues and finally are completely absorbed by an organism. On the premise of meeting the fixing effect of a magnesium alloy bone plate, the encirclement device can greatly improve the treatment effect of the magnesium alloy bone plate without using wedge-type fixing ends such as magnesium alloy bone pegs and the like, and simultaneously, the magnesium alloy bone plate is not needed to be taken out through a secondary operation, so that pains of the patient are alleviated and postoperative long-term risks of the patient are reduced.
