AI Technical Summary
Conventional metal band saws are limited to a single saw unit configuration, preventing simultaneous or independent operation of multiple saw units and necessitating increased tooling costs and reduced productivity.
The design modification rotates the saw frames 90° into a vertical orientation, allowing for the integration of a second saw unit, enabling synchronous or independent operation and reducing tooling costs.
This configuration enhances productivity, reduces tooling costs, and improves ergonomics and accessibility by allowing dual saw unit operation with a reduced machine footprint.

Abstract
Description
Utility model-certified metal band saws feature a saw unit designed for cutting metal workpieces. The saw unit comprises an endlessly circulating saw band guided over a drive band wheel and a deflection band wheel. The saw band is toothed and supported laterally and from the rear in the cutting zone by band guides. Mechanical or hydraulic tensioning devices are provided for adjusting the required band tension. The band tension can be monitored via a display. The saw band is driven by an electric motor, which drives the drive band wheel directly or via a gearbox. The saw unit is designed to be lowered relative to the workpiece being cut. In known designs, the saw unit is fed by gravity or by a hydraulic or electric feed mechanism to ensure a consistent sawing process. To improve cut quality, a coolant supply, etc., is provided in the cutting area. There are two basic types of saw unit guides: linear and pivot-bearing. In the linear-guided version, the saw unit is horizontally mounted and guided on both sides by linear guides. Feeding in this version is achieved using a hydraulic or electric feed mechanism. In the pivot-bearing version, the saw unit is supported on one side by an axle. The saw unit is secured by hydraulic cylinders, etc. (diagonal saw unit). Feeding in this version is usually achieved by gravity; when the hydraulic cylinder is opened, the hydraulic oil escapes, and the saw unit slowly lowers. The invention relates to an optimized design that specifically addresses the constructive design of the machine. The horizontal design and arrangement of the saw unit is the most common configuration for metal band saws. Due to this design, only one (1!) saw unit can be mounted; therefore, the metal band saw machine has no spare saw blade available, nor is synchronous operation of two saw units possible. The invention specified in claim 1 is based on the problem of creating a metal band saw which makes it possible to accommodate a second saw unit in order to choose either synchronous operation with the simultaneous processing of a workpiece or independent operation. This problem is solved by the features listed in claim 1. The invention enables the integration of a second sawing unit. To achieve this, the saw frames are rotated 90° into a vertical orientation. This design modification allows for the arrangement of a second sawing unit, resulting in additional functional and economic advantages. Among other things, the expected advantages in protection zones 2-6 are shown. Further advantages of the invention include: reduced tooling costs and tool changes; increased productivity; reduced footprint due to vertical sawing units; and improved ergonomics and accessibility. An embodiment of the invention is explained with reference to Figures 1 and 2. Figure 1 shows a metal band saw for metalworking, in particular for cutting metallic workpieces. The metal band saw has a base frame (1) which serves as a supporting structure. Two saw units (2, 3) are suspended from the base frame (1). Unlike conventional band saws, in which the saw unit is arranged horizontally, the machine shown has two saw units (2, 3) that are each arranged in a vertical orientation. The saw units (2, 3) are mirror images of each other. The two saw units (2, 3) are each guided independently of one another, in particular such that they are movable relative to each other (Z1 and Z2 + / -). This makes it possible to machine a workpiece arranged between the saw units (2, 3) and to cut it by at least one of the saw units (2, 3).The cutting process can be carried out either by a first saw unit (2), by a second saw unit (3), or by the simultaneous interaction of both saw units (2, 3).
