Description

[Technical field]

[0001] This application claims priority to and the benefit of U.S. Patent Application No. 63 / 321,037, filed March 17, 2022, which is incorporated by reference herein in its entirety.

[0002] The present disclosure relates to inflatable structures, and more particularly to inflatable structures that use interchangeable connectors and inflatable members having various structural and functional features. Summary of the Invention [Means for solving the problem]

[0003] The present disclosure describes a system of components that can be combined to form a modular inflatable structure. The structure can be formed using inflatable members interconnected together at their respective joints. The inflatable members can have connectors that interconnect adjacent inflatable members, which can be integral to the inflatable members or can be coupled to the inflatable members as separate connectors. The structure can have assembly locations where the inflatable members are coupled to adjacent inflatable members to allow flow between the inflatable members.

[0004] In some embodiments, the inflatable structure may be formed using a variety of interchangeable components, such as connectors, valves, connector arms, caps, and / or inflatable members that may be selectively coupled to one another to form the inflatable structure. The connectors may be incorporated into the inflatable members themselves to form a framework that may be expanded from a collapsed or uninflated configuration to an inflated or expanded configuration, or may be formed as separate components that are interconnected with one or more inflatable members. As discussed further herein, the various advantages and applications for such structures create many opportunities and benefits in various industries.

[0005] Aspects of at least some of the embodiments disclosed herein are beneficial and advantageous in terms of ease of storage when the structure is in a collapsed configuration, and rapid expansion to a deployed configuration such that the structure is ready for use.

[0006] According to some embodiments disclosed herein, a structure may also be modular, i.e. components of a system may be connected to form a structure or to modify the shape and / or function of the structure.

[0007] The modularity of the structure may allow for a variety of unique connectors, tubing, panels, bases, and / or other devices, including lights, motors, electrical and / or plumbing components, and / or other features that may be commonly incorporated into toys, storage structures, or other service structures in which aspects of the systems disclosed herein may find utility. The modularity of the system may permit a user to extend the system or exchange components of the system to build a structure specifically designed for the user's particular needs.

[0008] For example, the structures may be used for portable garage spaces for vehicles, trade booths, construction sets for educational, recreational, or commercial use, portable structures such as sheds, tents, forts, storage sheds and garages, temporary housing that may be used during emergencies, obstacle courses, protective shelters against inclement weather, forms for holding or supporting certain types of construction materials (e.g., to hold or be filled with materials such as concrete or other materials that may be sprayed onto the structure or otherwise supported by the structure to harden and used to facilitate the creation of permanent structures and a variety of other construction and recreational uses).

[0009] Optionally, in some embodiments, there may not be a valve and / or connector built into the inflatable member itself (e.g., a closure cap may be used to close the inflatable member for this purpose).

[0010] In some embodiments, the system may include an inflatable member and a connector made of rigid and / or flexible materials. For example, at least a portion of the connector, such as its main body section, may be made of a flexible, deformable material. Such embodiments allow the ports of the connector to move in different angular orientations relative to one another, thereby allowing relative movement of the inflatable member connected to the connector.

[0011] For example, at least a portion of the connector (e.g., at least a portion of the connector body and / or the connector arm or port) may comprise a flexible material that may flex or bend when a force is applied to an inflatable member attached thereto (at the joint between the inflatable member and the connector) resulting in a bending stress on the inflatable member or the joint.

[0012] Further, in some embodiments, at least a portion of the connector (e.g., the connector arms) can be rigid to enable a secure connection or seal between the connector and the inflatable member coupled thereto.

[0013] According to some embodiments, the connector may be incorporated into the inflatable structure itself and may facilitate interconnection with at least one other connector or inflatable structure, In some embodiments, the connector may be formed as a separate component from the inflatable structure and may be used to interconnect with one or more inflatable structures.

[0014] Thus, when the connector is formed as a separate component from the inflatable structure of the system, the connector may be formed without a valve, but when coupled to the inflatable structure, may function to interact (e.g., open and / or close) with a valve that is built into or incorporated into the coupling portion of the inflatable structure.

[0015] For example, the valve may be opened to allow fluid communication between the inflatable structure and the connector, whether manually by a user or by interaction with the inflatable member when the connector is inserted into a mating portion of the inflatable structure. It is also possible that the valve may be closed manually by a user or when the connector is removed from the inflatable member.

[0016] Alternatively or additionally, the connector itself may include a valve, and the inflatable structure may be formed without a valve. The valve of the connector may be opened and / or closed when the connector is coupled to the inflatable structure (whether manually by a user or by interaction with the inflatable member), thereby allowing fluid communication between the inflatable structure and the connector.

[0017] In some embodiments, the connector may be formed without valves such that fluid flow through the connector is unimpeded. Such embodiments may also be used with inflatable structures that do not have valves to form a system in which air flow through the connector from one inflatable member into another inflatable member is unimpeded. Connectors of such embodiments may be used to interconnect two or more inflatable structures to allow fluid flow therebetween.

[0018] In some embodiments, the connector may be coupled to the inflatable structure without opening the valve, thereby not allowing fluid flow between the inflatable structure and the connector. Thus, in some embodiments, the valve may be incorporated into the connector formed separately from the inflatable member, or into the inflatable member that comprises or is formed as a single component with the connector, or may be omitted entirely from both. Thus, the valve may be formed as a separate component that may be coupled to the connector and / or the inflatable member. Additionally, closure caps may be used to provide sealing of any ports or openings in either component of the structure.

[0019] Optionally, the connection between the inflation tube and the connector may provide a mechanical or structural connection, such as various engagement features (protrusions and / or slots) and / or a friction fit. For example, both the inflatable member and the connector may include ports or connection structures using a rigid material, such as plastic, to create a friction fit engagement.

[0020] As discussed further herein, the various advantages and applications for such structures create many opportunities and benefits in various industries. Additionally, in some embodiments, the structures can be configured to include lighting, plumbing, and / or other electrical or functional components that provide utility to a user.

[0021] Some embodiments of the system may include an inflatable member, such as a tube, cube, rectangular prism, or panel, that may be inflated using a liquid or gas (collectively referred to hereinafter as "fluid") to transition from a collapsed configuration to an expanded configuration. The inflatable member may be coupled to one or more connectors and may be interconnected with one or more additional inflatable members.

[0022] The inflatable member may have a unique size, shape, color, stiffness, or thickness that allows the inflatable member to be used for a particular application. The inflatable member may comprise an inlet port and other three-dimensional forms, such as a tubular section or any of a variety of geometric shapes, including but not limited to flat panels, spheres, cylinders, cubes, triangular pyramids, geometric prisms, and / or other three-dimensional forms. The three-dimensional forms may be inflated via flow through the inlet port such that the inflatable member unfolds or transitions from a collapsed configuration to an expanded configuration. Thus, the three-dimensional forms of the inflatable member may function or appear as a variety of different structures or features of a three-dimensional inflated structure, such as a wall, a support column, a shade panel, a roof, a tabletop, a brace, a base, or various other structural components.

[0023] In some embodiments, an inflatable member may include two or more inlet ports that allow for fluid communication between the inlet port and the three-dimensional configuration of the inflatable member. In this manner, the inflatable member may be interconnected with two or more connectors at each inlet port to thereby allow for the passage of fluid through the three-dimensional configuration, for example to allow for fluid communication with additional inflatable members coupled to one of the connectors to which the inflatable member itself is coupled. Thus, multiple inflatable members may be interconnected to one another in an end-to-end or array configuration, with the inflatable members in fluid communication with one another to facilitate fluid communication between the connectors and the inflatable members such that a single inflation point of the structure may be used to inflate all of the inflatable members.

[0024] The connector of the structure may include one or more connecting arms configured to be coupled to the respective inflatable members.

[0025] For example, the connector may have a single connecting arm that may be coupled to the inflatable member and, optionally, an inflation port to which an inflation device may be coupled to drive fluid through the connector and into the inflatable member.

[0026] According to some embodiments, the inflation port can be configured to be coupled to a connector arm of another connector in addition to or instead of an inflation device.

[0027] Additionally, in some embodiments, the connector may also include multiple connecting arms without inflation ports, such that the connector is used to interconnect only multiple inflatable members. The connector may include a 2-way, 3-way, 4-way, 5-way, 6-way, or other multi-way connecting arm configuration that can interconnect the respective number of inflatable members in fluid communication with one another. In this manner, the connector may provide fluid communication between each of the inflatable members.

[0028] According to some embodiments, the connector may be configured to permit the connecting arms to rotate relative to the body of the connector. The connecting arms may be adjusted to an appropriate or desired orientation relative to the connector body based on the particular application or shape of the structure being formed. This articulation may be particularly useful when the connector is used to interconnect multiple inflatable members.

[0029] In some embodiments, the connecting arms of the connector can be configured to rotate or articulate up to 15 degrees relative to the connecting arm's first position, up to 30 degrees relative to the connecting arm's first position, up to 45 degrees relative to the connecting arm's first position, up to 60 degrees relative to the connecting arm's first position, up to 75 degrees relative to the connecting arm's first position, or up to 90 degrees relative to the connecting arm's first position.

[0030] Rotation of the connecting arms can allow the connecting arms to be articulated or moved to a position where the multiple connecting arms are rotated so that the distal ends of the multiple connecting arms move closer together or converge toward one another, or to be articulated or moved in the opposite direction so that the distal ends do not move toward one another or converge toward one another.

[0031] For example, in some embodiments, a connector may include a connector body having a flat or plate-like configuration and a number of connecting arms coupled around a periphery of the flat connector body, the connecting arms being capable of pivoting, rotating or moving together such that they all move together toward a single point and tend to converge toward one another.

[0032] Optionally, one or more of the arms may also be configured to be rotated in the opposite direction to the other connecting arms. Such inherent articulation of the connecting arms may permit the connector to define a generally concave shape for the portion of the structure that corresponds to the connector, a generally flat shape for the portion of the structure that corresponds to the connector, or a surface point that creates an intersection of diverging surfaces or a convergence of planes that are inclined relative to one another.

[0035] The detailed description set forth below is intended to be a description of various configurations of the subject technology, and is not intended to represent the only configurations in which the subject technology may be practiced. The accompanying drawings are incorporated herein and constitute a part of the detailed description. The detailed description includes specific details for the purpose of providing a thorough understanding of the subject technology. However, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that the subject technology may be practiced without these specific details. In some cases, well-known structures and components are illustrated in block diagram form to avoid obscuring the concepts of the subject technology. For ease of understanding, similar components are labeled with the same element numbers.

[0036] Referring now to the drawings, various aspects of embodiments of the present disclosure are shown in Figures 1-24. The features shown in these figures and discussed herein may be incorporated into a variety of systems, structures, and components. Systems may provide structures that can be inflated and deflated to provide structures that are temporarily and selectively expandable to an deployed configuration and collapsible to a contracted configuration when desired.

[0037] Turning now to the drawings, Figure 1 shows an example of one of many different three-dimensional shapes that can be made using the components of the structures discussed herein. Figure 1 is an embodiment of an inflatable structure 10 that includes multiple inflatable members 12 and a connector 14. Figures 1 and 2 show a perspective view and a side view, respectively, of structure 10. Structure 10 can have a three-dimensional design.

[0038] For example, the structure 10 may have a pentagonal shaped base 16. However, other shapes such as rectangular, square, hexagonal, triangular, or other polygonal shapes may also be realized and may have one or more interconnected inflatable members 12 extending from the base and interconnecting the sides of the base 16. Additionally, the three-dimensional shape of the structure may be determined based on the intended application or other considerations to provide a myriad of shapes, sizes, and uses for the consumer.

[0039] As shown in the embodiment of Figures 1 and 2, the connectors 14 may each be coupled to up to five inflatable members 12. As such, the structure 10 may define a plurality of triangular shaped surfaces 18, which are themselves defined by adjacent inflatable members 12 about the exterior surface of the structure 10. Advantageously, when inflated, such a design of the structure 10 may provide a substantially rigid and stiff structure utilizing a triagonal framework. As such, the structure 10 may be a stable structure and may be useful in a variety of applications.

[0040] The stability and integrity of structure 10 are illustrative of some of the possibilities and utilities of the inflatable structures disclosed and taught herein through the various examples and disclosures. Furthermore, not only may structure 10 provide a reliable and stable framework, structure 10 may also enable a user to incorporate a variety of optional features, such as lighting and shade components, as well as any of the various components and features described above.

[0041] 3-10, various features of connector 14 are illustrated that may be used with structure 10. As shown, connector 14 may include one or more connector arms 20 coupled to a body portion 22 of connector 14.

[0042] According to some embodiments, the connector 14 may be coupled to one or more inflatable members 12. The connector 14 may also be used to interconnect two or more inflatable members 12.

[0043] In some embodiments, the body portion 22 of the connector 14 may be configured to allow fluid communication between two inflatable members 12 coupled to the connector 14. Thus, the connector 14 may facilitate fluid transfer between one inflatable member 12 and an adjacent inflatable member 12, both of which are coupled to the connector 14.

[0044] Body portion 22 may optionally comprise a material that allows one or more portions of the body portion to bend or flex. Body portion 22 may comprise both flexible and rigid portions, such as a flexible socket to which connector arm 20 may be coupled, and a flexible inflation port 80 to which an inflation mechanism or another connector arm may be attached. In some embodiments, inflation port 80 may bend or flex to allow for flexibility and adjustability similar to the ball-and-socket joint of connector arm 20, but with less complexity than a ball-and-socket joint.

[0045] Additionally, the body portion 22 itself may be flexible to allow relative movement between the socket and the connector arm 20. Thus, any inflatable members coupled to the connector 14 may be allowed to bend or flex relative to one another.

[0046] Additionally, body portion 22 may include a padded or cushioned outer surface or layer such that the padded body portion of the connector may advantageously provide some protection against injury or trauma if a user comes into contact with the connector during use.

[0047] For example, body 22 may comprise a mixture of rigid or hard plastics and flexible and / or soft materials. For example, connector arm 20 may comprise a generally spherically shaped mating surface 52 that engages with a generally spherically shaped surface 54 of a socket 56 of body 22. Socket 56 of body 22 may be formed from a hard plastic or other rigid material. This may allow for a ball-and-socket joint that provides both a firm interconnection between connector arm 20 and body 22 and also allows connector arm 20 to translate, swivel, pivot, or rotate relative to body 22.

[0048] Connector 14 may be formed from rigid and / or flexible materials. In some embodiments, connector arm 20 may include a generally spherically shaped mating surface 52 formed from a rigid material, such as a rigid plastic, that mates with the rigid plastic of a socket 56 in body portion 22.

[0049] Optionally, in some embodiments, at least a portion of the connector arm 20, such as a central length thereof, may comprise a flexible material that allows bending of the second or distal end portion 72 of the connector arm 20 at its farthest point relative to the spherically shaped connecting surface 52 of the connector arm 20.

[0050] Connector arm 20 may optionally be configured to define a longitudinal length or extent between spherically shaped connecting surface 52 and distal end portion 72. In some embodiments in which a portion of connector arm 20 is formed from a flexible material, connector arm 20 may be steered or bent into a desired angular orientation to provide the benefits of increased flexibility and alternative configurations and ease of assembly, which may be facilitated by allowing slight adjustability when connector arm 20 is connected to another component, such as another connector or an inflatable member.

[0051] Connector 14 may incorporate only hard connector arms, only soft connector arms, or a mixture of hard and soft connector arms. The connector may be configured to allow a user to optionally interchange connector arms to allow a user to tailor a given system based on its structural, functional, or other requirements.

[0052] Additionally, in some embodiments, the connector arms 20 may be formed as a continuous, single piece with the body 22 of the connector 14 (i.e., the connector arms are integrally formed with the body). In this manner, the body may be formed continuously with one or more connector arms, each of which defines a predetermined orientation relative to the body. In such embodiments, the connector arms may include flexible portions that allow the connector arms to bend or pivot relative to the body to provide some adjustability of the connector arms relative to the body. Thus, such embodiments may provide a single-component connector in which the body and connector arms are formed from a single, continuous material, instead permitting the connector to have one or more bendable or adjustable connector arms. Nevertheless, such embodiments may also be configured to include one or more sockets or joints to which separately formed connector arms may be coupled, in addition to connector arms integrally formed with the body.

[0053] In some embodiments, the connector arm 20 may be coupled to the body portion 22 in a manner that allows movement of the connector arm 20 relative to the body portion 22. Such movement may allow the connector arm 20 to translate, pivot, swivel, or rotate relative to the body portion 22.

[0054] 3-6, the connector arm 20 can be moved to various positions relative to the body portion 22. FIG. 3 shows a top perspective view of the connector 14 with the connector arm 20 positioned in a bent-down position 30. The bent-down position 30 can represent the furthest position of the second or distal end portion 72 of the connector arm 20 relative to the body portion 22.

[0055] 4 shows the connector arm 20 in an upwardly bent position 32. The upwardly bent position 32 may represent an opposite position to the downwardly bent position 30. When moving between the downwardly bent position 32 and the upwardly bent position 32, the connector arm 20 may swivel, rotate, or pivot up to an angle of up to about 90 degrees or greater. The range of motion of the connector arm 20 relative to the body 22 may be up to an angle of up to about 15 degrees, up to about 30 degrees, up to about 45 degrees, up to about 60 degrees, up to about 75 degrees, up to about 90 degrees, up to about 105 degrees, or greater.

[0056] When measuring the range of motion of a given connector arm 20, the body 22 of the connector 14 may define a plane 40 that passes through the body 22 and the connector arm 20. As illustrated in Figures 5 and 6, the central axis 42 of the connector arm 20 may be tilted at a bend angle relative to the connector plane 40. For example, in Figure 5, the central axis 42 of the connector arm 36 may define a downward angle 44 relative to the plane 40. Further, in Figure 6, the connector arm 20 has been rotated into the upwardly bent position 32, defining an upward angle 46 between the central axis 42 of the connector arm 20 and the plane 40 of the body 22 of the connector 14.

[0057] According to some embodiments, the downward angle 44 can range from 0 degrees to about 15 degrees, from about 0 degrees to about 30 degrees, from about 0 degrees to about 45 degrees, from about 0 degrees to about 60 degrees, from about 0 degrees to about 75 degrees, or more. Similarly, the upward angle 46 can be between about 0 degrees and about 15 degrees, between about 0 degrees and about 30 degrees, between about 0 degrees and about 45 degrees, between about 0 degrees and about 60 degrees, between about 0 degrees and about 75 degrees, or more.

[0058] 5 and 6, the connector arm 20 may be coupled to the body portion 22 using a ball-and-socket arrangement 50. For example, the connector arm 20 may include a generally spherically shaped mating surface 52 that engages with a generally spherically shaped surface 54 of a socket 56 of the body portion 22. As can be appreciated by one skilled in the art, this ball-and-socket arrangement 50 may allow the connector arm 20 to be in fluid communication with an interior cavity 60 of the body portion 22.

[0059] In some embodiments, the connector arms 20 may define an internal passageway 62 extending from a first end portion 70 to a second or distal end portion 72 of the connector arms 20. The first end portion 70 of the internal passageway 62 of the connector arms 20 may open into the internal cavity 60 of the body portion 22. The internal cavity 60 may be in fluid communication with one or more of the sockets 56 to allow one or more of the connector arms 20 to be in fluid communication with the body portion 22 and / or with each other.

[0060] 3 and 4, the body portion 22 may include an inflation port 80 in fluid communication with the interior cavity 60 of the body portion 22. The inflation port 80 may be used to couple an inflation device (not shown) thereto such that a user may drive fluid into the interior cavity 60 of the body portion 22, thereby inflating any fluidly connected connector arms 20 and inflatable members, each of which are coupled thereto.

[0061] Therefore, connector 14 may optionally include an inflation port 80 that allows connector 14 to be used to drive fluid toward one or more inflatable members 12. However, in some embodiments, connector 14 may be designed without an inflation port 80. In such embodiments, connector 14 may provide fluid communication between each and every inflatable member coupled to connector 14.

[0062] In still other embodiments, connector 14 may be configured to occlude or block fluid flow to / from one or more of the inflatable members coupled to connector 14. For example, connector 14 may be configured with a solid body portion 22 that does not provide any fluid communication between each of the coupled inflatable members 12. However, connector 14 may also be configured such that body portion 22 allows fluid communication between two or more inflatable members while preventing fluid communication to / from one or more other inflatable members.

[0063] As noted above, the inflatable structures and / or connectors of the systems disclosed herein may be formed to include one or more valve mechanisms that selectively allow or restrict fluid communication therethrough.

[0064] In some embodiments, the connector may have one or more valves to control fluid flow therethrough.

[0065] In some embodiments, the inflatable structure may have one or more valves that control fluid flow therethrough.

[0066] Furthermore, in some embodiments, neither the connector nor the inflatable structure may have one or more valves controlling fluid flow therethrough.

[0067] Additionally, in some embodiments, both the connector and the inflatable structure may have one or more valves to control fluid flow therethrough.

[0068] If used in some embodiments of the system, the valve may be opened and / or closed manually by a user and / or by interaction with the inflatable member or connector, thereby allowing fluid communication between the inflatable structure and the connector.

[0069] For example, the connector 14 may be configured to include a valve (e.g., a one-way valve) in one or more of the sockets 56 or in the connector arms 20. According to some embodiments, a one-way valve may be incorporated within the internal passage 62 of each connector arm 20. The one-way valve may allow flow into or out of the connector arm 20.

[0070] For example, connector arm 20 may be configured to allow flow through its interior passageway 62 only when connector arm 20 is interconnected with a respective inflatable member 12 .

[0071] 5 and 6, the connector arm 20 may include one or more engagement protrusions 90 along the second end portion 72 of the connector arm 20. The engagement protrusions 90 may extend distally from the second end portion 72. However, the engagement protrusions 90 may be positioned about the periphery or periphery of the connector arm 20 in a manner that allows for proper interconnection with the respective inflatable member 12. A variety of designs and configurations that allow for engagement between the connector arm 20 and the inflatable member 12 may be realized.

[0072] Optionally, upon engagement between the connector arm 20 and the inflatable member 12, the one-way valve of the connector arm 20 may be disengaged to allow flow through the interior passageway 62 of the connector arm 20 and the inflatable member 12. A grub or connector piece may be coupled to the connector arm 20 or the inflatable member 12 and configured to enter and / or open the valve when the connector arm is coupled to another connector arm or inflatable member.

[0073] Some embodiments may be configured to include a valve in the connector arm 20 that may allow flow out of the connector 14 and into the inflatable member 12, but generally blocks flow from the inflatable member 12 toward the connector 14. Such a design may be useful for a designated inflation connector to which an inflation device is coupled to drive fluid into the structure 10. However, such an inflation connector may also include a single one-way valve incorporated into the inflation port 80 instead of or in addition to other one-way valves incorporated into the connector arm 20 or body portion 22 of the connector 14.

[0074] The connector arms of the connector may be configured to be coupled to the respective inflatable members, and the coupling between the inflatable members and the connector arms may enable or provide a secure interconnection between the inflatable members and the connector.

[0075] For example, referring now to Figures 7-10, the portion between the connector 14 and the inflatable member 12 is illustrated in various views. As shown in Figure 7, the connector 14 may be coupled to the inflatable member 12 at a first end portion 100 of the inflatable member. The first end portion 100 may include a connection socket 102 into which the second end portion 72 of the connector arm 20 may be inserted. As mentioned above, the second end portion 72 of the connector arm 20 may engage with and be fixedly coupled to the inflatable member 12. The connection socket 102 may include a respective engagement mechanism, such as a protrusion, recess, groove, or other such mechanism, which may engage with the connector arm 20 and the connection socket 102 to ensure a secure connection therebetween.

[0076] In some embodiments, the system may be configured such that the joint between the connector arms 20 at the connection socket 102 provides a substantially rigid connection. The system may be configured to preferentially allow flexure at the inflatable member 12 (to support any significant bending stresses or other loads imposed on the structure in a given connector and localized area around the inflatable member) rather than allowing the joint itself to potentially act as a point of structural failure.

[0077] For example, in some embodiments, Figures 7-10 show that a substantially robust interconnection can be provided through a secure, deep engagement between the second end portion 72 of the connector arm 36 and within the connection socket 102. For example, in some embodiments, approximately 1 / 3 to 1 / 2 of the length of the connector arm 20 can be inserted into or longitudinally overlapped with the connection socket 102 to be securely coupled to the connection socket 102. Further, in some embodiments, approximately 1 / 3 to 2 / 3 of the length of the connection arm 20 can be coupled to the connection socket 102. Advantageously, at least approximately 1 / 3 or at least approximately 1 / 2 of the length of the connector arm 20 can be inserted into or longitudinally overlapped with the connection socket 102 to produce a superior, robust joint exhibiting high bending strength. Figure 10 shows a cutaway view of a wall of the inflatable member 12 illustrating the connection socket 102 from within the tubular member 12.

[0078] 7-9 illustrate an embodiment of a manifold arrangement 110 for the connector body 22. The manifold arrangement 110 may include a plurality of hollow channels 112 interconnecting the sockets 56 of the body 22 to allow fluid communication between the connector arms 20 and any inflatable members 12 coupled thereto.

[0079] Optionally, connector 14 may include an end cap 120 that may be coupled to second end portion 72 of connector arm 20. In some embodiments, end cap 120 may be secured to connector arm 20 and may prevent air from escaping from connector arm 20. According to some embodiments, end cap 120 may also provide protection against and / or prevent the ingress of debris at second end portion 72 of connector arm 20. In particular, end cap 120 may protect engagement protrusion 90 and help ensure that second end portion 72 of connector arm 20 remains clean and free of debris or other particles.

[0080] In some embodiments incorporating a valve within the connector arm 20 itself, the end cap 120 may also serve to block flow through the connector arm 20. Nevertheless, both of these components, the valve in the connector arm 20 (if one is used in the design) and the end cap 120, may facilitate and tend to ensure that fluid pressure in the system is not compromised and remains at a desired level during use of the system 10.

[0081] 7-10, the ball-and-socket joint 50 of the connector 14 may allow the connector arms 20 to swivel, rotate, or pivot into a number of different positions and articulate up and down or side to side relative to a given structure or plane of the connector 14. In some embodiments, the interconnection between the connector arms 20 and the body portion 22 of the connector 14 may allow for rotational articulation to allow for a variety of unique configurations and positions of the connector arms 20, thereby permitting the shape of the structure 10 to be specifically articulated to a given design.

[0082] As previously mentioned, connectors may be configured to include multiple connector arms, be arranged in different shapes or configurations, and provide other structural or functional features for particular applications. Figures 11-18, 23, and 24 show various views of alternative connector designs that may be used in accordance with some embodiments of the structures disclosed herein. The connector designs shown and described in this disclosure may be modified and / or used in any combination. For example, any of the connector designs in Figures 1-18, 23, and 24 may be used in any combination with each other or by themselves in a given structure or structure kit in accordance with certain embodiments.

[0083] 11-13 show an embodiment of a connector 140 including a connector body 142 having a plurality of connection sockets 144 within which a connector arm structure 146 may be mounted. The connector body 142 may include an inflation port 150 that may be coupled to a connector arm of another connector of an inflation device and / or structure. The connector arm structure 146 may function in a similar manner to the ball-and-socket connector arm of the connector 14 discussed above. However, as illustrated in FIG. 13, the connector arm structure 146 may provide a range of rotational movement that is generally symmetrical about a connection axis 160. In this manner, the connector arm 162 of the connector arm structure 146 may swivel, rotate, or pivot about the connection axis to a desired position relative to the body 142 of the connector 140.

[0084] The connector 140 illustrated in Figures 11-13 also illustrates that the connector may include three connector arms extending therefrom. In this regard, Figures 14-18 illustrate similar alternative embodiments of a connector. For example, Figures 14-16 illustrate a connector 170 having a connector body 172 with four sockets 174 to which respective connecting arm structures 176 are coupled.

[0085] 17 and 18 show a further embodiment of a connector 190 having a connector body 192 with two sockets 194 coupled with respective connecting arm structures 196. Additional embodiments of the connectors 170, 190 can also include respective inflation ports, as well as other structural and functional features disclosed herein for the other embodiments.

[0086] Additionally, like connector 14, the connectors illustrated in Figures 11-18 may also include flexible or padded bodies.

[0087] 11-18 may be flexible to allow relative movement between the socket and the connector arms. This may allow any inflatable members coupled to the connector to be allowed to bend or flex relative to one another.

[0088] Additionally, the body portions of the connectors illustrated in Figures 11-18 may include a padded or cushioned outer surface or layer, such that if a user were to come into contact with the connector during use (such as during collapse of the structure), the padded body portions of the connector may advantageously provide some protection against injury or trauma.

[0089] The connectors disclosed herein exhibit various connector bodies having sockets that allow the connector arms to have a default or initial position in which the connector arm axes are in a common plane, however, the connector bodies may also be configured to allow the connector arm axis to be oriented at an angle of approximately 90 degrees relative to one or more other connector axes of the connector.

[0090] In some embodiments, a connector may be configured to have multiple connector arms extending from a single point. For example, a connector may be configured as a six-arm connector, with all arms oriented at a 90 degree angle relative to another arm. Other connectors may be configured to have other angular relationships between the arms. Some connectors may be configured to have connector arms extending from multiple points (not just from a single point). Such embodiments may embody any of the features and structural characteristics disclosed herein.

[0091] As noted above, the connectors disclosed herein may be used in forming structures, and the teachings and disclosures herein have provided examples of connector bodies and other features that may be implemented to produce any of a variety of useful structures suitable for educational, recreational, and commercial applications.

[0092] 19 and 20, the inflation and construction of the structure 200 is shown. FIG. 19 shows the structure 200 in an uninflated or collapsed configuration, and FIG. 20 shows the structure 200 in an inflated configuration. As shown, an inflation device 202 may be coupled to a connector 204 of the structure 200. The inflation device 202 may pump air into the connector 204, which may transfer the air to an inflatable member 206 of the system. As shown in FIG. 20, the inflatable member is pressurized to achieve a rigid or inflated configuration. The structure 200 utilizes a pyramid type design, using a connector having at least three connecting arms.

[0093] 21 and 22 show yet another embodiment of an inflatable assembly 210 having multiple inflatable members 212 coupled together via a connector 220 and a valve component 222, according to some embodiments. The connector 220 may include five connection ports 224 distributed around the periphery of a connector body 226. The connector ports 224 may be oriented coplanar with one another in the body plane, but extend in different directions away from a central point of the connector body 226. Additionally, one or more additional connector ports may extend from the connector body 226 in a different plane than the body plane.

[0094] The valve component 222 may include a membrane or sealing portion that may bend to an open position when a protrusion of a corresponding male valve portion is pressed against it. The valve component 222 may be coupled to, connected to, integral with, or otherwise formed with the inflatable member 212 or connector 220. The male valve portion may also be coupled to, connected to, integral with, or otherwise formed with the inflatable member 212 or connector 220. The valve component 222 may be coupled to the inflatable member 212 and / or port 224 via a mechanical fit, such as a friction fit or a threaded connection.

[0095] Thus, the assembly 210 depicted in Figures 21 and 22 illustrates that a connector may include one or more ports that extend in a single plane and one or more ports that extend in another plane that intersects the plane of the other ports. As discussed above with respect to the other embodiments disclosed and illustrated herein, the connector 220 may incorporate any of a variety of features, such as valves, caps, rigid and / or soft connector arm structures, connector arms formed integrally with or separately from the connector body, which are not repeated for the sake of brevity but are incorporated herein by reference.

[0096] 23 and 24 show yet another embodiment of an inflatable assembly 250 having multiple inflatable members 252 that may be coupled together via a connector 260 and connector arms 262, according to some embodiments. FIG 23 shows the interconnection of a pair of inflatable members 252 with a connector 260 via connector arms 262.

[0097] 23, the connector arms 262 may be separable from and attachable to the connector 260. Each of the connector arms 262 may be received within a port 264 of the body portion 266 of the connector 260. Each connector arm 262 may include a central tab region 270 interposed between opposing first and second end portions 272, 274 of the connector arm 262. Although the connector arms 262 are illustrated as having diametrically opposed end portions 272, 274, the end portions may be oriented at angles of, for example, 45 degrees, 60 degrees, or 90 degrees. Other angular orientations of the end portions relative to each other or relative to the central tab region 270 may also be realized.

[0098] Additionally, each of the first and second end portions 272, 274 of the connector arm 262 may include one or more engagement members 276. The engagement members 276 (e.g., deflectable protrusions) may be inserted into and facilitate engagement with the port 264 of the connector 260. Additionally, the engagement members 276 may be inserted into and facilitate engagement with the connection socket 280 of the inflatable member. Thus, the first and second end portions 272, 274 may be coupled to the inflatable member 252 and / or port 264 via a friction fit (e.g., using the engagement members 276) or via a mechanical engagement, such as a threaded connection (not shown, but corresponding male and female threads may be included on the respective first and second end portions 272, 274, the inflatable member 252, and / or the port 264).

[0099] Further, in some embodiments, the engagement member 276 may be inserted into the connection socket 280 to open the valve 278 of the connector 260. For example, the valve 278 of the connector 260 may be disposed in each of the ports 264 of the connector 260 and may be opened when the connector arm 262 is engaged therewith. When the connector arm 262 is removed from the connection socket 280, the valve 278 may automatically return to its closed position.

[0100] The connection socket 280 may be at least partially recessed into the end portion of the inflatable member. Additionally, the connection socket 280 may include a rigid rim or collar 282 that may be used to facilitate gripping and engaging the connector arm 262.

[0101] Additionally, the end portion of the inflatable member 252 may be formed as rigid or flexible, in some embodiments, the connection socket 280 may comprise a rigid material and may be recessed into the end portion of the inflatable member.

[0102] FIG. 24 also illustrates that the connector arm 262 can be an interference fit within the port 264 of the connector 260 .

[0103] Similar to what has been discussed above with respect to other embodiments, the body portion 266 of the connector 260 may be flexible to allow its ports 264 to flex or bend relative to one another. Additionally, the body portion 266 may include a padded or cushioned outer surface or layer. Thus, if a user comes into contact with the connector during use, the padded body portion of the connector may advantageously provide some protection against injury or trauma.

[0104] Additionally, according to some embodiments, connector arm 262 may be advantageously formed as a rigid member. As such, connector arm 262 may interconnect with port 264 of body portion 266, which may in some embodiments be relatively flexible and pliable. Furthermore, if a portion of assembly 250 becomes broken or damaged, it may be easier and less expensive to replace just connector arm 262 instead of replacing port 264 of body portion 266 or some other component integrally formed with the inflatable member or connector.

[0105] The features individually discussed with respect to the embodiment of Figures 1-24 may be implemented with the other embodiments disclosed herein.
