Abstract
Description
[Technical field]
[0001] FIELD OF THE DISCLOSURE The present disclosure relates generally to inspection equipment, and more particularly to an inspection tool that measures the height and swage of an installed bolt. [Background technology]
[0002] Eddiebolts are high performance fasteners used in the assembly of aircraft, such as the F-35. To ensure that Eddiebolts are installed correctly, machinists use two separate measuring devices to ensure the bolts are at the correct height and swaged correctly. Summary of the Invention [Problem to be solved by the invention]
[0003] These two devices are used to visually verify that the bolts are installed correctly, which can be difficult to determine in hard-to-reach areas. Also, it can require bending or nerves on the part of the operator to verify that the two tools are reading the measuring devices correctly. Due to the possible subjectivity of the current measuring devices, the inspector must inspect each bolt again after the mechanic completes the initial inspection. By the time the inspection is complete, each bolt has been inspected twice with two different tools, resulting in four inspections of every installed eddy bolt. [Means for solving the problem]
[0004] In consideration of the above problems, according to the present invention, there is provided an Eddie-Bolt inspection tool having a body, a valve, a light emitting diode (LED), a battery, a first position switch, a second position switch, a cap, a nose piece, and a cover, wherein the cap is provided on a top of the body, the body is provided on a top of the nose piece, the nose piece is at least partially provided within the body, the cover is provided around and over at least a portion of the body, and the body has a first side, a second side, a third side, a fourth side, and an opening.
[0005] For an aid in understanding the present invention, reference is now made to the following descriptions taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which: [Brief description of the drawings]

[0007] To facilitate a better understanding of the present invention, the following examples of certain embodiments are given. The following examples should not be read to restrict or limit the scope of the present invention. The embodiments of the present invention and its advantages are best understood by referring to Figures 1-9, in which the same reference numerals are used to indicate the same and corresponding parts.
[0008] Described herein are various systems, tools, and methods that provide both the height and swage of an Eddie bolt to be inspected at the same time and provide an immediate visual signal whether or not it is correctly installed. The Eddie bolt inspection device can eliminate operator subjectivity in measuring bolt height and reduce ergonomic hazards by eliminating the need for the operator to lean forward to read the height measurement position. The Eddie bolt inspection device also allows the operator to use only one tool for both measurements and eliminates the need for the inspector to repeat the measurement process, thereby reducing the number of inspections for each bolt from four to one.

In one or more embodiments, the displayed minimum value can be any suitable value ranging from about 0.275 inches (6.985 mm) to about 0.435 inches (11.049 mm). If the initial minimum value is less than the displayed minimum value, the operator can remove the cap 110 and place one or more shims (not shown) around each of the one or more fastener holes 300 to increase the minimum value. In these embodiments, the operator can reconnect the cap 110 to the body 105 and use the depth micrometer to verify that one or more shims have adjusted their minimum value to equal the indicated minimum.
[0026] In some embodiments, the operator can insert the depth micrometer further to measure the initial maximum. The initial maximum can be measured when the LED 800 stops emitting light. If the initial maximum is less than the indicated maximum, the operator can remove the fastener installed in the shim recess 525 and install one or more shims (not shown) around one of the one or more fastener holes 300 in the shim recess 525 to increase the maximum. In these embodiments, the operator can reattach the fastener cap 110 and use the depth micrometer to ensure that the one or more shims adjust the maximum to equal the indicated maximum. Without being limiting of the present invention, the indicated maximum can be any suitable value ranging from about 0.1 inches (2.54 mm) to about 0.8 inches (20.32 mm). In one or more embodiments, the indicated maximum can be any suitable value ranging from about 0.358 inches (9.0932 mm) to about 0.518 inches (13.1572 mm). In embodiments, the nominal minimum and maximum swage for an Eddie bolt may be the diameter of the first cylindrical portion 700 of the nose piece 120 .
[0027] Once calibrated, the Eddiebolt inspection tool 100 can be utilized to visually indicate that one or more Eddiebolts have a height and swage within tolerance (e.g., within the minimum and maximum values indicated). In embodiments, the Eddiebolt inspection tool 100 can be mounted on the top of an Eddiebolt, and the top of the Eddiebolt can be partially inserted into the nose piece 120. If the top of the Eddiebolt is not flush with the inner circumference of the second cylindrical portion 710 of the nose piece 120, the LED 800 cannot emit light, thereby signaling that the Eddiebolt was not properly swaged. In embodiments, the bottom side 230 of the body 105 may not be seated flush with the outer surface around the Eddiebolt if the Eddiebolt is not properly swaged. In such an embodiment, the valve 400 may not engage the top of the Eddiebolt. In one or more embodiments, a downward force can be applied to the Eddiebolt inspection tool such that the top of the Eddiebolt presses against the valve 400. In these embodiments, the valve 400 can translate vertically to compress a spring disposed around the first position switch 810. In embodiments, an electrical circuit including the battery 905, the LED 800, the first position switch 810, and the second position switch 815 can be initially in an open state, where no current flows through the LED 800 to activate it and emit light. The second position switch 815 can be initially set to a closed state, and the first position switch 810 can be initially set to an open state. In operation, as the valve 400 translates, the electrical circuit can be closed when the top of the Eddiebolt activates the first position switch 810 closed, allowing current to flow through the LED 800, where it can emit light. When the valve 400 translates beyond the indicated maximum, the electrical circuit may open to stop current from flowing to the LED 800. In embodiments, when the valve 400 translates beyond the indicated maximum, the second position switch 815 may be actuated to open to stop light emission from the LED 800.
