Description

1 / 16 Concentrated liquid cleaning composition, liquid cleaning product and method for cleaning a surface. Field of Invention

[0001] The present invention is in the field of cleaning compositions. Specifically, the present invention relates to a concentrated liquid cleaning composition to be diluted in water and used for cleaning both animate and inanimate surfaces. Background of the Invention

[0002] Consumers are generally involved in various cleaning activities as part of their household chores. They commonly use cleaning products for cleaning as well as disinfecting various surfaces. These surfaces include inanimate hard surfaces such as floors, walls, windows, doors, furniture, and tabletops; and soft surfaces such as fabrics, towels, bedding, and pillowcases. In addition, toilets and bathrooms are further examples where microorganisms tend to proliferate, thus requiring frequent cleaning and disinfection.

[0003] These compositions can also be used to sanitize topical surfaces of the human or animal body. For example, they can be used as bath water, as shaving water, to sanitize hands in domestic environments, hospitals and medical clinics; among a host of other personal hygiene applications.

[0004] These compositions are generally marketed as a concentrate in a bottle. Consumers dilute one of these compositions in water, forming a cleaning liquid, and use it on surfaces to be cleaned. Typically, these concentrates are homogeneous liquids and provide a clear liquid after dilution. Consumers often find it difficult to assess the availability of the cleaning liquid after dilution. They look for an indication of the presence of cleaning agents in the liquid. Therefore, consumers prefer a visual indication that shows Petition 870250084392, dated 09 / 19 / 2025, page 7 / 50 2 / 16 indicates that the liquid is ready for use. Visual indications are certain changes in the appearance of the liquid. The formation of mist or cloudiness upon dilution is one of these indications.

[0005] In this regard, US patent 6075002 A (Reckitt & Colman Inc., 2000) discloses concentrated aqueous liquid disinfectant compositions that include: a pine oil constituent; a germicidal cationic surfactant, preferably a quaternary ammonium compound having germicidal properties; an organic solvent constituent; a binary solvent cosystem comprising an alkyldiphenyl solvent and a cosolvent; optionally, but desirably, at least one optional constituent. The liquid disinfectant compositions possess excellent initial volatile characteristics, as well as retention of volatility for extended periods.

[0006] Document US 2002 / 0123451 A1 (Clariant Finance, 2002) discloses a liquid pine oil cleaning composition containing: A) water; B) about 5 to 20% by weight of pine oil; C) about 2 to 10% by weight of an organic solubilizer other than said pine oil; D) about 0.1 to 5% by weight of an alkalinity agent; E) about 0.1 to 15% by weight of an anionic surfactant; F) about 0.01 to about 2% by weight of a cationic surfactant comprising a quaternary ammonium salt represented by the formula wherein R1 and R2 are independently a hydrogen or a C1-3 alkyl group; R3 is a C8-C18 alkyl group; and R4 is a C1-3 alkyl group or an ethoxylate group represented by the formula -(CH2CH2O)yH, wherein y is a number from 1 to 3; and X- is a halide ion or a methosulfate, and G) about 0.1 to 10% by weight of a nonionic surfactant comprising an alkoxylate alcohol.

[0007] US patent 6030936 A (Reckitt & Colman Inc., 2000) discloses concentrated volatile (blooming) germicidal compositions for cleaning and disinfecting hard surfaces according to the invention comprising the following constituents: from 0.1 to 10% by weight of a terpene-containing solvent which desirably includes both pine oil and d-limonene; from 0.1 Petition 870250084392, dated 09 / 19 / 2025, p. 8 / 50 3 / 16 to 12% by weight of at least one organic solvent; 0.1 to 20% by weight of at least one non-ionic surfactant constituent, desirably including at least one non-ionic surfactant having an HLB greater than or equal to 10, and at least one non-ionic surfactant having an HLB value less than or equal to 8; an amount effective for volatile intensification of at least one amphoteric surfactant selected from alkyl-ampho(mono)- and (di)-acetates, alkyl-ampho(mono)- and (di)-propionates, and aminopropionates; optionally an additional non-ionic surfactant based on a C8-C18 primary alcohol ethoxylate exhibiting a cloud point of 20 degrees C in water; a germicidally effective amount of at least one cationic surfactant having germicidal properties; and the remainder up to 100% by weight of water. Concentrated compositions may contain from 0 to 20% of other optional additives.

[0008] WO 99 / 49008 A1 discloses concentrated volatile compositions for cleaning hard surfaces having: 0.1 to 10% by weight of a terpene-containing solvent which desirably includes both pine oil and d-limonene; 0.1 to 12% by weight of at least one organic solvent that is not a constituent of a terpene-containing solvent; 0.1 to 20% by weight of a nonionic surfactant system which includes both at least one nonionic surfactant constituent having an HLB greater than or equal to 10, and at least one nonionic surfactant based on a primary C8-C18 alcohol ethoxylate which exhibits a cloud point of about 20 °C or less in water; an amount effective for volatile intensification of at least one amphoteric surfactant selected from alkyl-ampho(mono)- and (di)-acetates, as well as alkyl-ampho(mono)- and (di)propionates, and aminopropionates; and the remainder up to 100% by weight of water.

[0009] Although several cleaning compositions are disclosed, there is still a need for an improved concentrated liquid composition that forms a cleaning liquid upon dilution in water, while providing a visual indication to consumers. It is also desirable that the composition be stable under various storage conditions. Petition 870250084392, dated 09 / 19 / 2025, page 9 / 50 4 / 16

[0023] Preferably, the nonionic surfactant has an HLB value above 10. The HLB is calculated using Griffin's method, where HLB = 20 x Mh / M, where Mh is the molecular mass of the hydrophilic portion of the molecule and M is the molecular mass of the entire molecule, resulting in an arbitrary scale from 0 to 20. An HLB value less than 10 is generally a lipid-soluble surfactant, while a value greater than 10 is generally water-soluble.

[0024] Suitable nonionic surfactants for the present invention include those selected from alkyl polyglycosides, alcohol ethoxylates, Petition 870250084392, dated 09 / 19 / 2025, page 12 / 50 7 / 16 polyoxyethylene sorbitan alkyl esters, alkylphenol ethoxylates.

[0025] The nonionic surfactant in the composition may be an alkyl polyglycoside. As used herein, alkyl polyglycosides are compounds having the formula R1O(R2O)b(Z)a, wherein R1 is an alkyl radical having from about 8 to about 10 carbon atoms; R2 is an alkylene radical having from 2 to 4 carbon atoms; Z is a saccharide residue having 5 or 6 carbon atoms; b is a number having a value from 0 to about 12; and a is a number having a value from 1 to about 6 (the degree of polymerization). Due to the method by which they are synthesized, alkyl polyglycosides are generally present as mixtures of alkyl polyglycosides having varying amounts of carbon atoms in the alkyl radical and varying degrees of polymerization. Thus, when referring to alkyl polyglycosides, the alkyl radical is generally known to have a range of carbon atoms (e.g., C8 / 10 refers to a range of alkyl radicals having 8 to 10 carbon atoms) and the degree of polymerization is generally referred to as the average degree of polymerization of the mixture.

[0026] Preferably, the alkyl polyglycoside is an alkyl polyglycoside surfactant. It is observed that this polymer helps in the formation of a stable liquid composition and helps to intensify the mist-forming effect upon dilution in water. Petition 870250084392, dated 09 / 19 / 2025, page 14 / 50 9 / 16

[0034] Alkaline-soluble or expandable emulsion polymers herein refer to a group of polymers that are typically available as stable emulsions at low pH (pH less than 4.5), while exhibiting increased viscosity upon expansion or dissolution at higher pH (pH greater than 5.5, preferably in the range of 5.5 to 7.5). These polymers are generally referred to as hydrophobically modified alkaline medium expandable or soluble polymers, or abbreviated as 'HASE' polymers. However, these polymers are not suitable for the present invention, and the composition is free of these polymers. The term 'free of' herein implies that the composition does not include an associative 'ASE' or HASE polymer as a raw material or component; however, it is possible that traces of this polymer may be present as an impurity in some of the raw materials. Preferably, the amount of these polymers is less than 10% by weight, more preferably less than 7% by weight, and most preferably less than 5% by weight of the total weight of the polymer.Ideally, the composition should not contain hydrophobically modified alkaline-soluble or alkaline-expandable emulsion polymers (HASE).

[0073] Ex. B, D, and E were considered stable homogeneous liquids, while Ex. A and C were unstable. The term unstable used here implies that the compositions did not form a homogeneous composition, but resulted in two phases. Ex. D was a homogeneous liquid, however, it did not show haze formation upon dilution. Ex. E showed significantly less haze formation compared to the others.

[0074] To evaluate the haze effect upon dilution, 2 g of each composition (Ex. 1 and Ex. C) were added to 1000 mL of water in a glass beaker. Typically, 'haze formation' refers to a milky white appearance of the solution during dilution. The haze effect was evaluated by measuring the turbidity of the solution within 30 seconds of dilution at room temperature (23 ± 2 °C). Turbidity is expressed in Nephelometric Turbidity Units (NTU), with a higher NTU value implying greater turbidity. In the present context, a higher NTU value means better haze formation. The measured turbidity values for each composition are shown in Table 1. Petition 870250084392, dated 09 / 19 / 2025, page 22 / 50
