Abstract
Description
Technical Field
[0001] The present disclosure relates to a display device. Background Art
[0002] Display elements provided with current-driven light-emitting units and display devices provided with such display elements are well known. For example, display elements provided with light-emitting units composed of organic electroluminescent elements have attracted attention as display elements capable of emitting high-brightness light through low-voltage direct current drive.
[0003] The display device using organic electroluminescence is a self-luminous type and also has sufficient responsiveness to high-definition high-speed video signals. For example, in a display device for wearing on glasses such as glasses and goggles, in addition to setting the pixel size to about several micrometers to 10 micrometers, it is also necessary to increase the brightness. For example, PTL 1 proposes forming a lens structure on a color filter to improve light extraction efficiency.

[0064] Hereinafter, the present disclosure will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings based on the embodiments. The present disclosure is not limited to these embodiments, and the various numerical values and materials in the embodiments are exemplary. In the following description, the same reference numerals will be used as the same elements or elements with the same functions, and redundant descriptions will be omitted. Description will be given in the following order.
[0065] 1. Description of the display device and general information related to the present disclosure
[0066] 2. First Implementation
[0067] 3. Second Implementation
[0068] 4. Third Implementation
[0069] 5. Description of electronic devices, etc.
[0070] [Description of the display device and general information related to the present disclosure]
[0071] As described above, the display device according to the first aspect of the present disclosure at least includes:
[0072] A plurality of light-emitting units are arranged on a substrate in a two-dimensional matrix;
[0073] a first lens unit disposed above the plurality of light emitting units and having a first microlens corresponding to each light emitting unit; and
[0074] The second lens unit is arranged above the first lens unit and has a second micro lens corresponding to each light emitting unit.
[0075] The display device according to the first aspect of the present disclosure may have a configuration in which a color filter is arranged between a first microlens and a second microlens. The microlens may be configured by a known colorless transparent material. The microlens may be formed by known methods such as exposure using a gray tone mask, melt flow, and dry etching. The color filter may be configured by a known color resist material to which a colorant composed of a desired pigment or dye is added. In some cases, a material without a coloring material may also be selected as a color filter, and the corresponding pixel is set to a white display pixel.
[0076] The display device including the above-mentioned preferred configuration according to the first aspect of the present disclosure may also have a configuration including a third lens unit, which is arranged above the second lens unit and has a third microlens corresponding to each light-emitting unit. In this case, a configuration in which a color filter is arranged between the first microlens and the second microlens and between the second microlens and the third microlens may be used.
[0077] The display device including the above-mentioned various preferred configurations according to the first aspect of the present disclosure may have a configuration in which the refractive index of the material constituting the first microlens is greater than the refractive index of the material constituting the second microlens. In this case, a configuration in which a color filter is arranged between the first microlens and the second microlens can be used, and the refractive index of the optical material constituting the color filter is lower than the refractive index of the optical material constituting the first microlens and is equal to or higher than the refractive index of the optical material constituting the second microlens. In addition, a configuration in which the first microlens is formed of an inorganic material and the second microlens is formed of an organic material can be used. The refractive index of the constituent materials used in the present disclosure can be determined by measuring with, for example, an ellipsometer.
[0078] As described above, the display device according to the second aspect of the present disclosure includes:
[0079] A plurality of light-emitting units are arranged on the substrate in a two-dimensional matrix; and
[0080] The columnar light guide is arranged above the plurality of light emitting units and corresponds to each light emitting unit, wherein:
[0081] The partition wall portion is provided between the light guide portions adjacent to each other.
[0082] The display device according to the second aspect of the present disclosure may have a configuration in which a boundary surface between the partition wall section and the light guide section forms a light reflecting surface.
[0083] The display device including the above-mentioned preferred configuration according to the second aspect of the present disclosure may have a configuration in which the light guide portion is formed by a dielectric material. In this case, a configuration in which the light guide portion is formed by an organic material may be used. Examples of organic materials include acrylic resin materials, silicone resins (such as polysiloxane), etc.
[0084] The display device including the above-mentioned preferred configuration according to the second aspect of the present disclosure may have a configuration in which the partition wall portion is arranged to have a refractive index smaller than the refractive index of the light-guiding portion. In this case, a configuration in which the partition wall portion is formed as a space can be used. The space can be in a state where the pressure is maintained below the standard atmospheric pressure as an actual vacuum state, or can be in a state filled with a gas (such as atmosphere or nitrogen). Alternatively, a configuration in which the partition wall portion is formed of a dielectric material can also be used.
[0085] Alternatively, the display device including the above-mentioned various preferred configurations according to the second aspect of the present disclosure may have a configuration in which the partition wall portion is formed of a metal material. As the metal material, a metal material with high visible light reflectivity is preferably selected, and examples thereof may include aluminum (Al), gold (Au), silver (Ag), chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), or alloys including these.
[0086] The display device including the above-mentioned various preferred configurations according to the second aspect of the present disclosure may have a configuration in which the boundary surface between the partition wall portion and the light guide portion extends in the normal direction of the virtual plane including the plurality of light-emitting units. Alternatively, a configuration in which the boundary surface between the partition wall portion and the light guide portion forms a predetermined angle with respect to the normal direction of the virtual plane including the plurality of light-emitting units may also be used.
[0087] According to the second aspect of the present disclosure, a display device including the above-mentioned various preferred configurations may have a configuration in which a transparent substrate is arranged to face the substrate, and wherein the substrate is provided with a joining portion, which is arranged to surround an area of a plurality of light-emitting units arranged in a two-dimensional matrix, and the substrate and the transparent substrate are joined by the joining portion.
[0088] For example, the substrate and the transparent substrate can be irradiated with plasma to activate the surface of the joint in a vacuum, and then they can be joined in a vacuum. In this case, from the viewpoint of adhesion, a thin film made of an inorganic material such as metal or silicon is preferably formed on the joint surface. The height of the joint is preferably formed to be the same as the height of the light guide. Typically, the joint and the light guide can be formed to the same height by sharing the process of forming the joint and the process of forming the light guide.
[0089] The display device including the above-mentioned various preferred configurations according to the second aspect of the present disclosure may have a configuration in which the light-guiding portion includes at least a first microlens located above the light-emitting unit and a second microlens located on the first microlens. In this case, a configuration in which the partition wall portion is embedded in a filling layer provided between the first microlens and the second microlens and is provided so that its refractive index is less than the refractive index of the filling layer can be used. Alternatively, a configuration in which a color filter is arranged between the light-emitting unit and the first microlens, between the first microlens and the second microlens, or above the second microlens can be used.
[0090] In the display device according to the present disclosure including the above-mentioned various preferred configurations, examples of the light-emitting unit include organic electroluminescent light-emitting units, LED light-emitting units, and semiconductor laser light-emitting units. These light-emitting units can be configured using well-known materials and methods. From the perspective of configuring a flat display device, it is preferred that the light-emitting unit is composed of an organic electroluminescent unit.
[0091] The organic electroluminescent unit is preferably a so-called top-emission type. The organic electroluminescent unit may be composed of an anode electrode, a hole transport layer, a light-emitting layer, an electron transport layer, a cathode electrode, and the like.
[0092] When the display device is a color display, the display device can be configured by combining a white light-emitting unit and a color filter. In this configuration, organic layers including a hole transport layer, a light-emitting layer, an electron transport layer, etc. can be shared between multiple pixels. Therefore, it is not necessary to apply an organic layer separately for each pixel. Alternatively, a configuration in which a red light-emitting organic layer, a green light-emitting organic layer, and a blue light-emitting organic layer are separately applied according to the pixel can be used. In this configuration, the finer the pixel pitch, the more difficult it is to apply separately. Therefore, in a display device with a pixel pitch in the micrometer range, it is preferred to have a configuration in which a white light-emitting unit and a color filter are combined.
[0093] In an organic electroluminescent light-emitting unit emitting white light, for example, the organic layer may be implemented as a laminated structure including a red light-emitting layer, a green light-emitting layer, and a blue light-emitting layer. Alternatively, the organic layer may be implemented as a laminated structure including a blue light-emitting layer emitting blue light and a yellow light-emitting layer emitting yellow light, or a laminated structure including a blue light-emitting layer emitting blue light and an orange light-emitting layer emitting orange light. These layers will emit white light as a whole. The material constituting the organic layer is not particularly limited, and known materials can be used.
[0094] Examples of materials constituting the anode electrode of the organic electroluminescent light-emitting unit include metals (such as platinum (Pt), gold (Au), silver (Ag), chromium (Cr), tungsten (W), nickel (Ni), aluminum (Al), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), cobalt (Co), tantalum (Ta), etc.), or alloys and transparent conductive materials (such as indium tin oxide (ITO, including Sn-doped In2O3, crystalline ITO and amorphous ITO) and indium zinc oxide (IZO)).
[0095] As the material constituting the cathode electrode of the organic electroluminescent light-emitting unit, a conductive material is preferred so that the emitted light can be transmitted and the electrons can be efficiently injected into the organic layer. For example, metals or alloys such as aluminum (Al), silver (Ag), magnesium (Mg), calcium (Ca), sodium (Na), strontium (Sr), Mg-Ag alloy, Mg-Ca alloy, Al-Li alloy, etc. can be mentioned.
[0096] A driving unit for driving the light-emitting unit is disposed under the substrate on which the light-emitting unit is arranged, but this configuration is not restrictive. For example, the driving circuit may be configured by a transistor (specifically, for example, a MOSFET) formed on a silicon semiconductor substrate constituting the substrate or a thin film transistor (TFT) disposed on various substrates constituting the substrate. An embodiment in which the transistors and the light-emitting units constituting the driving circuit are connected to each other via contact holes (contact plugs) formed in a substrate or the like is possible. The driving circuit may have a well-known circuit configuration.
[0097] The arrangement of pixels is not particularly limited as long as the realization of the display device of the present disclosure is not hindered. Examples of pixel arrays include square arrays, delta arrays, and stripe arrays.
[0098] Various requirements in this specification are satisfied not only when they are strictly satisfied mathematically, but also when they are substantially satisfied. The existence of various design or manufacturing variations is acceptable. In addition, each of the drawings used in the following description is schematic and does not show the actual size or its proportion. For example, the following description Figure 2 A cross-sectional structure of the display device is shown, but proportions such as width, height, and thickness are not shown.
[0099] [First embodiment]
[0100] The first embodiment relates to a display device according to the first aspect of the present disclosure.
[0101] Figure 1 This is a conceptual diagram of the display device according to the first embodiment. Figure 2 is a schematic partial cross-sectional view of the display device according to the first aspect.
[0102] like Figure 1 As shown, the display device 1 includes a plurality of light emitting units 25 arranged in a two-dimensional matrix on a substrate 10. The light emitting units 25 are arranged to correspond to the respective pixels 70 of the display device 1. The light emitting units 25 are composed of organic electroluminescent elements. Hereinafter, the configuration of the light emitting units 25 will be described in detail. The display device 1 includes a transparent substrate 90 arranged to face the substrate 10. Reference numeral 80 denotes a junction between the substrate 10 and the transparent substrate 90, which is arranged to surround the display area.
[0103] like Figure 2 As shown, the display device 1 includes at least a first lens unit 30A and a second lens unit 30B, the first lens unit is arranged above a plurality of light-emitting units 25 and has a first microlens 31A corresponding to each light-emitting unit 25, and the second lens unit is arranged above the first lens unit 30A and has a second microlens 31B corresponding to each light-emitting unit 25. The first microlens 31A and the second microlens 31B are formed as convex lenses having a convex shape on the light-emitting side. In the figure, the microlens is configured to have a convex lens shape on the light-emitting side, but this is only an example, and as shown in this example, it is sufficient if the lens can have a refractive function, and it is sufficient to make the light-emitting unit side have a convex shape. Therefore, the shape of the microlens is not limited to the shape shown in the figure.
[0104] The color filter 50 is arranged between the first microlens 31A and the second microlens 31B. More specifically, the planarization film 40 is provided on the first microlens 31A, and the color filter 50 is arranged thereon. The second microlens 31B is arranged on the color filter 50. The pixel 70 is configured by the light emitting unit 25 and the first microlens 31A corresponding thereto, the color filter 50, and the second microlens 31B. Figure 2 In the figure, the red color filter, the green color filter and the blue color filter are represented by reference numerals 50R, 50G and 50B, respectively. Similarly, the red display pixel, the green display pixel and the blue display pixel are represented by reference numerals 70R, 70G and 70B. The same applies to the other drawings described below. In some cases, a material without adding a coloring material can also be selected as a color filter, and the corresponding pixel is set to a white display pixel.
[0105] A description will be given of the relationship between the refractive indices of the materials constituting the first microlens 31A, the second microlens 31B, and the color filter 50. The refractive index of the material forming the first microlens 31A is greater than the refractive index of the material forming the second microlens 31B. In addition, the refractive index of the optical material forming the color filter 50 is smaller than the refractive index of the optical material forming the first microlens 31A and is equal to or higher than the refractive index of the optical material forming the second microlens 31B.
[0106] The first microlens 31A is formed of an inorganic material, and the second microlens 31B is formed of an organic material. Specifically, the first microlens 31A is formed of silicon nitride (refractive index is about 1.8), and the color filter 50 and the planarization film 40 are formed of an acrylic resin material (refractive index is about 1.4 to 1.5). The second microlens 31B is formed by selecting an acrylic resin material having a refractive index less than that of the color filter 50 or the same as that of the color filter 50.
[0107] Reference numeral 60 denotes a sealing resin layer provided between the second microlens 31B and the transparent substrate 90. As materials constituting the sealing resin layer 60, thermosetting adhesives (such as acrylic adhesives, epoxy adhesives, polyurethane adhesives, silicone adhesives, cyanoacrylate adhesives) and ultraviolet curing adhesives can be cited. It is desirable that the refractive index of the sealing resin layer 60 is smaller than the refractive index of the optical material constituting the second microlens 31B.
[0108] Next, the light emitting unit 25 and a driving circuit for driving the light emitting unit 25 will be described.
[0109] The driving circuit for driving the light emitting unit 25 is configured by a MOSFET or the like formed on a silicon semiconductor substrate corresponding to the substrate 10. The transistor constituted by the MOSFET is configured by a gate insulating layer 14 formed on the substrate 10, a gate electrode 15 formed on the gate insulating layer 14, a source / drain region 12 formed in the substrate 10, a channel forming region 13 formed between the source / drain regions 12, and an element separation region 11 surrounding the channel forming region 13 and the source / drain region 12. Reference numeral 20 denotes a planarizing film covering the entire surface including the top of the gate electrode 15.
[0110] An anode electrode 22 arranged corresponding to each light emitting unit 25 is formed on the planarization film 20. The anode electrode 22 and the transistor are electrically connected via a contact plug 21 provided in the planarization film 20.
[0111] An organic layer 23 emitting white light is formed on the entire surface including the top of the anode electrode 22. The organic layer 23 has a laminated structure of a red light emitting layer, a green light emitting layer, and a blue light emitting layer. Although the organic layer 23 is formed by laminating a plurality of material layers, it is represented by one layer in the figure. A cathode electrode 24 arranged as a common electrode for the light emitting unit 25 is formed on the organic layer 23. For example, a ground potential is supplied to the cathode electrode 24. In some cases, depending on the pixel, a configuration in which a red light emitting organic layer, a green light emitting organic layer, and a blue light emitting organic layer are separately coated may be used.
[0112] When a voltage is applied between the anode electrode 22 and the cathode electrode 24, a portion of the organic layer 23 located on the anode electrode 22 emits light. As described above, the light emitting unit 25 is configured by an organic electroluminescent element.
[0113] In the display device 1 , pixels are arranged in a square shape, for example. Figure 3A and Figure 3B It is a schematic plan view for explaining the arrangement relationship of various constituent elements constituting a pixel. Figure 3A The arrangement relationship of the anode electrodes is shown, and Figure 3B The arrangement relationship of the first microlenses is shown. Figure 4A and Figure 4B Then Figure 3B A schematic plan view for explaining the arrangement relationship of various constituent elements constituting a pixel. Figure 4A shows the arrangement relationship of the color filters, and Figure 4B The arrangement relationship of the second microlenses is shown.
[0114] The configuration of the display device 1 has been described above in detail.
[0115] Subsequently, the effect of forming the second microlens 31B in addition to the first microlens 31A will be qualitatively described.
[0116] Figure 5A and Figure 5B A schematic diagram illustrating how light is collected by a lens. Figure 5A is a schematic diagram showing how light is collected by a single lens. Figure 5B is a schematic diagram showing how light is collected by two lenses.
[0117] The light emitting area of the light emitting unit 25 has a surface shape rather than a point shape. Figure 5A As shown, in the case of a single lens, the degree of diffusion of light from the peripheral portion of the light emitting region outside the corresponding lens is large. Therefore, there is a limit to improving the light extraction efficiency, and the suppression of color mixing between adjacent pixels is also insufficient.
[0118] Through Figure 5BIn the dual lens configuration shown, light from the peripheral portion of the light-emitting area can be fully guided to the corresponding lens. Therefore, this configuration is superior to the conventional optical fiber ... Figure 5A In addition, Figure 5B As shown, qualitatively, it is preferred that the front lens of the two lenses be close to the light emitting area.
[0119] As described above, in the display device 1, the first microlens 31A corresponding to each light emitting unit 25 and the second microlens 31B arranged above the first lens unit 30A are arranged. The color filter 50 is arranged between the first microlens 31A and the second microlens 31B. With this configuration, the first microlens 31A is arranged close to the light emitting unit 25.
[0120] As a configuration of the display device, it is conceivable to arrange the color filter 50 in the lower layer, but this configuration is disadvantageous in arranging the first microlens 31A close to the light emitting unit 25. This will refer to Figure 6 Provide explanation.
[0121] Figure 6 is a schematic partial cross-sectional view of a display device according to a reference example.
[0122] Figure 6 The display device 9 shown has a configuration in which the color filter 50 is formed adjacent to the light emitting unit 25 and the first microlens 31A and the second microlens 31B are arranged above the color filter 50. In this case, since the color filter 50 is located between the first microlens 31A and the light emitting unit 25, the distance between the light incident surface and the light emitting surface of the first microlens 31A is greater than Figure 2 distances in the configuration shown.
[0123] At the same time, Figure 2 In the illustrated display device 1, the first microlens 31A is arranged close to the light emitting unit 25. Therefore, since the light collecting capability of the first microlens 31A is fully exhibited, this is advantageous in improving light extraction efficiency and suppressing color mixing between adjacent pixels.
[0124] Hereinafter, reference will be made to the schematic partial end view of the substrate, etc. Fig. 7A , Figure 7B , Fig. 8A , Figure 8B , Fig. 9 and Fig.10 An outline of a method for manufacturing the display device 1 will be described.
[0125] [STEP-100]
[0126] First, a MOSFET or the like serving as a driving circuit for the light emitting unit 25 is formed on the substrate 10, and a planarizing film 20 is formed on the MOSFET (see Fig. 7A ).
[0127] [STEP-110]
[0128] Next, an opening is formed in the planarizing film 20 at a position where the contact plug 21 is to be arranged, and a conductive material layer constituting the anode electrode 22 is formed on the entire surface including the opening. Thereafter, the conductive material layer is patterned to form the anode electrode 22 on the planarizing film 20 (see Figure 7B ).
[0129] [STEP-120]
[0130] Next, the organic layer 23 is formed on the anode electrode 22 and the planarization film 20 by, for example, a PVD method (such as a vacuum deposition method or a sputtering method), a coating method (such as a spin coating method or a die coating method), etc. Thereafter, the cathode electrode 24 is formed on the entire surface based on, for example, a vacuum vapor deposition method (see Fig. 8A ).
[0131] [STEP-130]
[0132] Next, a first lens unit 30A (see FIG. 1 ) provided with a first microlens 31A corresponding to each light emitting unit 25 is formed on the entire surface. Figure 8B ).
[0133] [STEP-140]
[0134] Thereafter, a planarization film 40 is formed on the entire surface. Next, a color filter 50 is formed on the planarization film by a known method (see Fig. 9 ).
[0135] [STEP-150]
[0136] Then, a second lens unit 30B provided with a second microlens 31B corresponding to each light emitting unit 25 is formed on the entire surface (see Fig.10 ). Next, a transparent substrate 90 is attached via a sealing resin layer 60 made of, for example, an acrylic adhesive. Thus, Figure 2 The display device 1 is shown.
[0137] The outline of the method for manufacturing the display device 1 has been described above.
[0138] Various modifications are possible for the first embodiment. Hereinafter, modifications will be described with reference to the drawings.
[0139] Fig.11is a schematic partial cross-sectional view of a display device according to a first modified example of the first aspect.
[0140] The display device 1A according to the first modification has a configuration further including a third lens unit which is arranged above the second lens unit and is provided with a third microlens corresponding to each light emitting unit 25. More specifically, this is achieved by further arranging a third lens unit 30C having a third microlens 31C above the second lens unit. Figure 2 The configuration obtained by placing the second lens unit 30B above the display device 1 is shown. For ease of explanation, Fig.11 The sealing resin layer 60 and the transparent substrate 90 are not shown. The same applies to the following description. Fig.12 and Fig.13 .
[0141] Fig.12 is a schematic partial cross-sectional view of a display device according to a second modification example of the first aspect.
[0142] The display device 1B according to the second modification example has a configuration in which a color filter is arranged between the first microlens and the second microlens and between the second microlens and the third microlens. More specifically, this is achieved by Fig.11 A configuration obtained by further arranging a color filter 50A between the second microlens 31B and the third microlens 31C of the display device 1B shown in FIG.
[0143] Fig.13 is a schematic partial cross-sectional view of a display device according to a third modified example of the first aspect.
[0144] The display device 1C according to the third modification example has a configuration in which the planarization film 40 is omitted and Figure 2 The display device 1 shown has a configuration in which a color filter 50 is formed. This configuration can further improve the chromaticity viewing angle characteristics.
[0145] Various modifications of the first aspect have been described above.
[0146] In the above-mentioned respective drawings, the widths of the microlenses are described as being substantially the same, but the widths of the microlenses do not necessarily have to be the same. Fig.14 It is a schematic cross-sectional view for explaining the relationship between the width of the light-emitting area and the width of the lens. In order to effectively improve the brightness, it is preferred that the width of the first microlens is equal to or greater than the width of the light-emitting area, and the width of the second microlens is equal to or greater than the width of the first microlens.
[0147] Furthermore, in the display device 1, pixels may be arranged in an array other than, for example, a square array. As an example, the arrangement of pixels of a modification example in a triangle array is shown in the figure. Fig.15A and Fig. 15BIt is a schematic plan view for explaining the arrangement relationship of various constituent elements in a pixel of a modified example. Fig.15A The arrangement relationship of the anode electrodes is shown, and Fig. 15B The arrangement relationship of the first microlenses is shown. Fig.16A and Fig. 16B Then Fig. 15B A schematic plan view for explaining the arrangement relationship of various components in a pixel of a modified example. Fig.16A shows the arrangement relationship of the color filters, and Fig. 16B The arrangement relationship of the second microlenses is shown.
[0148] [Second embodiment]
[0149] The second embodiment relates to a display device according to the second aspect of the present disclosure.
[0150] Fig.17A and Fig. 17B is a schematic diagram of a display device according to the second aspect. Fig.17A A schematic plan view of a display device is shown, and Fig. 17B A schematic cross-sectional view of a display device is shown. Fig.18 is a schematic partial cross-sectional view of a display device according to the second aspect.
[0151] As shown in FIG. 17 , the display device 2 includes a plurality of light emitting units 25 arranged in a two-dimensional matrix on a substrate 10. The light emitting units 25 are arranged to correspond to the respective pixels 70 of the display device 2. The display device 2 includes a transparent substrate 90 arranged to face the substrate 10. Reference numeral 280A denotes a junction between the substrate 10 and the transparent substrate 90, which is arranged to surround a display area.
[0152] As shown in Figure 17 and Fig.18 As shown, the display device 2 includes a columnar light guide portion 280, which is arranged above the plurality of light emitting units 25 and corresponds to each light emitting unit 25. The partition wall portion BW is provided between the light guide portions 280 adjacent to each other. Figure 6 Similar to the display device 9 of the reference example shown, the color filter 50 is formed adjacent to the light emitting unit 25, and the light guide 280 is arranged on the color filter 50. The configuration of the substrate 10 to the color filter 50 is the same as that described in the first embodiment, and therefore the description thereof will be omitted.
[0153] In the display device 2, the partition wall portion BW is arranged so that its refractive index is smaller than the refractive index of the light guide portion 280, and the boundary surface between the partition wall portion BW and the light guide portion 280 forms a light reflection surface. That is, when the light from the light emitting unit 25 is incident on the boundary surface from the light guide portion 280 beyond the critical angle, the light is totally reflected and guided to the observer side. Therefore, the light extraction efficiency can be improved and the color mixing between adjacent pixels can be suppressed.
[0154] In the display device 2, the partition wall portion BW is formed as a space. The light guide portion 280 is formed of a dielectric material. More specifically, the light guide portion 280 is formed of an organic material such as an acrylic resin material or a silicone resin material such as polysiloxane. The boundary surface between the partition wall portion BW and the light guide portion 280 is formed to extend in the normal direction of the virtual plane including the plurality of light emitting units 25. In some cases, the boundary surface between the partition wall portion BW and the light guide portion 280 may be formed to extend at a predetermined angle relative to the normal direction of the virtual plane including the plurality of light emitting units 25.
[0155] Fig.19 It is a schematic diagram for explaining reflection of light in the light guide unit.
[0156] The refractive index of the partition wall BW and the refractive index of the space are both represented by the symbol n air denoted by n1, the refractive index of the light guide portion 280 is denoted by n1, and the refractive index of the transparent substrate 90 is denoted by n2. Here, it is assumed that the refractive index n air =1. When the incident angle of light on the boundary surface (interface 1) is represented by the symbol θ1, where Sin(θ1)≥1 / n1, the light is totally reflected at the boundary surface, so that the light extraction efficiency is improved. In addition, Fig.19 In the embodiment, the condition that light can be taken out to the outside at the interface 2 between the transparent substrate 90 and the outside is Sin(θ2)<1 / n2.
[0157] Snell's law at interface 3 is expressed as
[0158] Sin(π / 2-θ1) / Sin(θ2)=n2 / n1.
[0159] When this formula is transformed,
[0160] Sin(θ2)=(n1 / n2)×(1-Sin2(θ1)) 1 / 2 ,
[0161] And by substituting this into the above Sin(θ2)<1 / n2 and rearranging,
[0162] We obtain Sin(θ1)>(1-(1 / n1)2) 1 / 2 .
[0163] Therefore, if we set 1 / n1=(1-(1 / n1)2) 1 / 2 , the amount of light that can be extracted is maximized. Therefore, it is preferred to set n1 = 2 1 / 2 The value of .
[0164] As described above, the substrate 10 of the display device 2 is provided with a joint portion 280A arranged to surround a region of a plurality of light emitting units 25 arranged in a two-dimensional matrix. The height of the joint portion 280A is formed to be the same as the height of the light guide portion 280. More specifically, the joint portion 280A and the light guide portion 280 are formed by patterning the same material layer. As described below, the display device 2 also has an advantage of being easy to perform so-called narrow frame.
[0165] When the substrate 10 and the transparent substrate 90 are sealed with molten glass or the like, there is a limitation in narrowing the frame, for example, because the melting of the molten glass has an influence on the organic layer 23 and it is difficult to apply the molten glass with a narrow width. In addition, even if bonding is performed at room temperature under low pressure conditions such as vacuum, if bonding is performed without the light guide 280, the internal pressure is low, so that the substrate 10 and the transparent substrate 90 are deformed. Moreover, since the configuration is hollow, the light extraction efficiency is reduced.
[0166] In contrast, in the display device 2, even if bonding is performed at room temperature under low pressure conditions such as vacuum, the distance between the substrate 10 and the transparent substrate 90 is maintained by a large number of light guides 280. Therefore, the frame can be narrowed while preventing deformation of the substrate 10 and the transparent substrate 90.
[0167] Hereinafter, reference will be made to the schematic partial end view of the substrate, etc. Fig. 20A , Fig. 20B , Fig. 20C , Fig.21A , Fig. 21B , Fig.22A and Fig. 22B An outline of a method for manufacturing the display device 2 will be described.
[0168] [STEP-200]
[0169] First, a driving circuit of the light emitting unit 25, the light emitting unit 25, a color filter 50, etc. are formed on the substrate 10 (see Fig. 20A ). For the sake of convenience, transistors, light emitting units 25, color filters 50, etc. forming a driving circuit are shown in a simplified manner.
[0170] [STEP-210]
[0171] Next, a layer of the same material constituting the bonding portion 280A and the light guide portion 280 is formed on the entire surface, and then the bonding portion 280A and the light guide portion 280 are formed by a known patterning technique (see Fig. 20B ).
[0172] [STEP-220]
[0173] Thereafter, in order to improve the adhesion at room temperature, the inorganic film AL1 is formed on the upper surface of the bonding portion 280A provided on the substrate 10 (see Fig. 20C ), and the inorganic film AL2 is formed on a portion of the transparent substrate 90 corresponding to the bonding portion 280A (refer to Fig.21A and Fig. 21B ). The inorganic film can be formed as a thin film of silicon (Si), titanium (Ti), copper (Cu), etc.
[0174] [STEP-230]
[0175] Next, the inorganic film AL1 of the substrate 10 and the inorganic film AL2 of the transparent substrate 90 are activated. For example, they can be activated by irradiation with Ar plasma (see Fig.22A ).
[0176] [STEP-240]
[0177] After that, the substrate 10 and the transparent substrate 90 are set to face each other and bonded at normal temperature in a vacuum (see Fig. 22B As a result, the display device 2 can be obtained. Since the space of the partition wall portion BW is under a low pressure condition such as vacuum and it is sufficient that the inorganic film is formed to have a sufficiently small thickness, the upper surface of the light guide portion 280 and the transparent substrate 90 are in close contact with each other.
[0178] In the above-mentioned step-220, the adhesive layer is formed in a limited manner. At the same time, for example, by performing oblique vapor deposition, a configuration in which an inorganic film is formed not only on the upper surface of the bonding portion but also on the upper surface of the light guide portion can be obtained. Fig.23A , Fig. 23B and Fig.23C , an outline of a modified example of the method for manufacturing the display device 2 will be described.
[0179] First, the above-described Step-200 to Step-220 are performed. Then, for example, an inorganic film is formed by performing oblique vapor deposition not only on the upper surface of the bonding portion 280A but also on the upper surface of the light guide portion 280 (see Fig.23A ). In addition, the inorganic film is also formed in the portion of the transparent substrate 90 corresponding to the bonding portion 280A and in the area surrounded thereby (see Fig. 23BThen, the display device 2 can be obtained by executing the above-mentioned step-230 and step-240 (see Fig.23C ).
[0180] The outline of the method for manufacturing the display device 2 has been described above.
[0181] The second embodiment can also be modified in various ways. Hereinafter, modifications are described with reference to the drawings.
[0182] Fig.24 is a schematic partial cross-sectional view of a display device according to a first modified example of the second aspect.
[0183] The display device 2A according to the second modification has a configuration in which a color filter is arranged between a light guide portion and a transparent substrate. Fig.25A , Fig.25B , Fig.25C , Fig.26A , Fig.26B and Fig.26C An outline of a method for manufacturing the display device 2A is described.
[0184] [STEP-200A]
[0185] First, a driving circuit for the light emitting unit 25, the light emitting unit 25, etc. are formed on the substrate 10 (see Fig.25A Then, the above step 220 is performed to form the light guide portion 280 and the joint portion 280A (see Fig.25B ).
[0186] [STEP-210A]
[0187] Further, the color filter 50 is formed on the transparent substrate 90 (see Fig.25C If necessary, a protective layer 291 is formed to cover the color filter 50. Fig.24 In this figure, the protective layer 291 is not shown.
[0188] [STEP-220A]
[0189] By performing the above-mentioned step-220, the inorganic film AL1 is formed on the upper surface of the bonding portion 280A provided on the substrate 10 (see Fig.26A ), the inorganic film AL2 is formed on the portion of the transparent substrate 90 corresponding to the bonding portion 280A (see Fig.26B ).
[0190] [STEP-230A]
[0191] The display device 2A (see FIG. 2A ) can be obtained by executing the above steps 230 and 240. Fig.26C ).
[0192] In addition, for example, the display device 2A is configured by forming an inorganic film not only on the upper surface of the bonding portion but also on the upper surface of the light guide portion by oblique evaporation. Fig.27A , Fig.27B and Fig.27C An outline of a method for manufacturing the display device 2A is described.
[0193] First, the above-mentioned step-200A and step-210A are performed. Then, by performing, for example, oblique evaporation, an inorganic film is formed not only on the upper surface of the bonding portion 280A but also on the upper surface of the light guide portion 280 (see Fig.27A ). Further, except for the portion of the transparent substrate 90 corresponding to the bonding portion 280A, the inorganic film is formed in the region surrounded thereby (see Fig.27B ). The display device 2A can be obtained by executing the above-mentioned step-230 and step-240 (see Fig.27C ).
[0194] [Third Embodiment]
[0195] The third embodiment relates to the display device according to the second aspect of the present disclosure.
[0196] Fig.28 is a schematic partial cross-sectional view of a display device according to a third embodiment. In the schematic plan view of a display device according to a third embodiment, the Fig.17A In the example, the light guiding portion 280 can be read as the light guiding portion 380 , and the bonding portion 280A can be read as the bonding portion 80 .
[0197] like Fig.28 As shown, the display device 3 includes a columnar light guide portion 380 arranged above a plurality of light emitting units 25 and corresponding to each light emitting unit 25. The partition wall portion BW is provided between the light guide portions 380 adjacent to each other. Figure 6 Similar to the display device 9 of the reference example shown, the color filter 50 is formed adjacent to the light emitting unit 25, and the light guide 380 is arranged on the color filter 50. The configuration of the substrate 10 to the color filter 50 is the same as that described in the first embodiment, and therefore the description thereof will be omitted.
[0198] The light guide 380 includes at least a first microlens 381 located above the light emitting unit 25 and a second microlens located above the first microlens 381. The partition wall portion BW is embedded in the filling layer 382 provided between the first microlens 381 and the second microlens 383 and is provided so that its refractive index is smaller than that of the filling layer 382.
[0199] A configuration can be obtained in which the color filter 50 is arranged between the light emitting unit 25 and the first microlens 381, between the first microlens 381 and the second microlens 383, and above the second microlens 383. Fig.28 In the example shown, the color filter 50 is arranged between the light emitting unit 25 and the first microlens 381 .
[0200] Similar to the second embodiment, the display device 3 can also be configured so that a light reflecting surface is formed at the boundary surface between the partition wall portion and the light guide portion. The reflection can be so-called total reflection or specular reflection. In the case of total reflection, the partition wall portion can be formed as a space or can be formed by a dielectric material with a low refractive index. In the case of specular reflection, the partition wall portion can be made of a metal material (such as aluminum) with a large light reflectivity.
[0201] In the third embodiment, the advantages of the first embodiment (such as use of the first microlens 381 and the second microlens 383) and the advantages of the second embodiment (such as reflection of light at the boundary surface between the partition wall portion and the light guide portion) can be obtained in combination.
[0202] Hereinafter, reference will be made to a schematic partial end view of a substrate, etc. Fig.29A , Fig.29B , Fig.30 , Fig.31 , Fig.32 , Fig.33 , Fig.34 , Fig.35 , Fig.36 , Fig.37 and Fig.38 An outline of a method for manufacturing the display device 3 will be described.
[0203] [STEP-300]
[0204] Step-100 to step-120 described in the first embodiment are performed to obtain the substrate 10 on which the light emitting unit 25 is formed (see Fig.29A ). Thereafter, a color filter 50 is formed on the substrate 10 (see Fig.29B ).
[0205] [STEP-310]
[0206] Next, a material layer 381A for configuring the first microlens 381 is formed on the entire surface (see Fig.30 ) and exposed via a gray tone mask GTM (see Fig.31 Then, development is performed to obtain the first microlens 381 (see Fig.32 ).
[0207] [STEP-320]
[0208] Next, a filling material layer 382A for forming the light guide portion 380 and the partition wall portion BW is formed on the entire surface (see Fig.33 ), and exposure is performed through a mask MSK in which a portion corresponding to the light guide portion 380 is opened (see Fig.34 Then, development is performed to obtain the filling layer 382 and the partition wall portion BW (see Fig.35 ). Here, the partition wall portion BW is described as a space, but when the partition wall portion BW is configured of a dielectric material or a metal material, these materials may be embedded in the partition wall portion BW formed as the space.
[0209] [STEP-330]
[0210] Next, a material layer 383A for configuring the second microlens 383 is formed on the entire surface (see Fig.36 ) and exposed via a gray tone mask GTM (see Fig.37 Then, development is performed to obtain the second microlens 383 (see Fig.38 ).
[0211] [STEP-340]
[0212] Next, the display device 3 can be obtained by bonding the substrate 10 and the transparent substrate 90 together via the sealing resin layer 60 .
[0213] The outline of the method for manufacturing the display device 3 has been described above.
[0214] Various modifications are also possible for the third embodiment. Hereinafter, modifications are explained with reference to the drawings.
[0215] Fig.39 is a schematic partial cross-sectional view of a display device according to a first modification example of the third embodiment. Fig.40 is a schematic partial cross-sectional view of a display device according to a second modification example of the third embodiment.
[0216] As described above, in the third embodiment, a configuration can be obtained in which the color filter 50 is arranged between the light emitting unit 25 and the first microlens 381, between the first microlens 381 and the second microlens 383, or above the second microlens 383. Fig.39 In the display device 3A shown in FIG. 1 , the color filter 50 is arranged between the second microlens 383 and the transparent substrate 90. Fig.40 In the illustrated display device 3B, the color filter 50 is arranged between the first microlens 381 and the second microlens 383 .
[0217] As described in the first embodiment, qualitatively, it is preferable that the distance between the light emitting unit 25 and the first microlens 381 is smaller. Fig.28 In the display device 3 shown in FIG. 1 , the chromaticity viewing angle is improved, but the light extraction efficiency is slightly reduced. Fig.28 Compared with the structure shown in FIG. 1 , the light extraction efficiency can be improved. In the first modification, the chromaticity viewing angle is slightly reduced. At the same time, the second modification has the advantage of being able to improve both the light extraction efficiency and the chromaticity viewing angle.
[0218] Fig.41 is a schematic partial cross-sectional view of a display device according to a third modification example of the third embodiment.
[0219] exist Fig.41 In the display device 3C shown, the second microlens 383 is a concave lens type. When the second microlens 383 is a convex lens, qualitatively, the front brightness tends to be higher than the peripheral brightness. For example, in the case of an application where brightness is also required on the wide viewing angle side, the light beam can be controlled to diverge toward the wide viewing angle side of the panel by making the second microlens 383 a concave lens.
[0220] [Electronic devices]
[0221] The display device of the present disclosure described above can be used as a display unit (display device) of an electronic device in all fields for displaying a video signal input to the electronic device or a video signal generated in the electronic device as an image or video. As an example, the display device can be used as a display unit (such as a television, a digital camera), a notebook personal computer, a mobile terminal device (such as a mobile phone), a camera, and a head-mounted display (head-mounted display unit).
[0222] The display device of the present disclosure also includes a modular device with a sealed configuration. Such a device can be exemplified by a display module formed by attaching a facing portion such as transparent glass to a pixel array portion. The display module can be provided with a circuit unit, a flexible printed circuit (FPC), etc. for inputting / outputting signals, etc. to the pixel array unit from the outside. In the following, a digital still camera and a head-mounted display will be shown as specific examples of electronic devices using the display device of the present disclosure. However, the specific examples shown here are only examples and are not restrictive.

[0225] The monitor 414 is provided at a substantially central portion of the back side of the camera body 411. A viewfinder (eyepiece window) 415 is provided above the monitor 414. By looking through the viewfinder 415, the photographer can visually recognize the optical image of the subject introduced from the imaging lens unit 412 and determine the composition.
[0226] The display device of the present disclosure can be used as the viewfinder 415 in the interchangeable lens single-lens reflex digital still camera having the above configuration. That is, the interchangeable lens single-lens reflex digital still camera according to this example can be produced by using the display device of the present disclosure as its viewfinder 415.

The head-mounted display has, for example, an ear hook portion 512 that enables it to be worn on the user's head on both sides of a glasses-shaped display unit 511. In this head-mounted display, the display device of the present disclosure can be used as the display unit 511. That is, the head-mounted display according to this example can be manufactured by using the display device of the present disclosure as the display unit 511.
