Description

Technical Field

[0001] The present invention relates to vehicle accessory devices and systems, such as interchangeable vehicle sun visor devices and systems for shading. Background Art

[0002] When driving, it is often desirable or necessary to selectively position various vehicle accessories. For example, selectively positioning a sun visor to block potentially dangerous solar glare or bright glare, or selectively positioning a dash cam to point in a specific direction. A vehicle sun visor is a common type of vehicle accessory device that is used to provide protection from sunlight or bright light in certain environments. For example, a vehicle sun visor can be pivoted downward to provide protection from direct exposure in front, or can be positioned against a side window to block sunlight or bright light that appears through the side window. However, a standard vehicle sun visor only provides protection from the sun or shadow from a single direction and is difficult to move and position as the sun changes.

[0003] Accordingly, there is still a need for new vehicle accessory devices and systems that are independent of standard vehicle sun visors, that can be easily moved among multiple positions and should preferably be able to be releasably fastened to an existing vehicle structure. Additionally, it is advantageous for a vehicle accessory device to be easily movable between different vehicles and to be able to connect various vehicle accessories other than a sun visor. Various aspects of the present disclosure meet this need and other needs. Summary of the Invention

[0006] In another aspect, the present invention relates to a vehicle sun visor system that includes: a base plate assembly that includes a base plate and a hinge bracket, the base plate being configured to be fixedly fastened to a portion of a vehicle and the hinge bracket being configured to be detachably coupled to the base plate for fastening to the vehicle, the hinge bracket being configured to be fastened at a plurality of positions along the base plate; and at least one auxiliary sun visor panel connected to the base plate assembly.

[0007] In another aspect, the present invention relates to an interchangeable vehicle accessory system that includes a base plate assembly. The base plate assembly includes a base plate and a hinge bracket. The base plate is configured to be fixedly fastened to a portion of the vehicle and the hinge bracket is configured to be releasably fastened to the vehicle at multiple positions along the base plate using the base plate. The hinge bracket is configured to connect to various vehicle accessories.

[0008] In another aspect, the present invention relates to a vehicle accessory connection system that includes: a base plate assembly that includes a base plate and a hinge bracket, the base plate being configured to be fixedly fastened to a portion of the vehicle and the hinge bracket being configured to be releasably fastened to the vehicle at multiple positions along the base plate using the base plate; wherein the hinge bracket is configured to connect to at least one auxiliary sun visor panel or vehicle accessory.

[0009] In another aspect, the present invention relates to a vehicle accessory connection device that includes a base plate; and a hinge bracket, the base plate being configured to be fixedly fastened to a portion of the vehicle and the hinge bracket being configured to be releasably fastened to the vehicle at multiple positions along the base plate using the base plate; wherein the hinge bracket is configured to connect to at least one vehicle accessory.

[0089] D. Accessory Devices and System Operation and Methods of Manufacture and Use

[0090] As described herein, various methods of using the disclosed devices and systems are also disclosed. For example, in another exemplary aspect, the present disclosure provides a method for using the disclosed system in a vehicle to provide glare protection. Figure 10 is a flow chart illustrating the general stages involved in method 1000 for operating the disclosed devices and systems consistent with embodiments of the present disclosure. Method 1000 may be implemented at least in part using systems 100 or 200 described in more detail below with respect to Figures 1A - 9 Furthermore, although the stages are disclosed with reference to systems 100 or 200, it should be understood that a plurality of other components may implement the operations of method 1000, including but not limited to other device mechanisms, mechanical components, environmental characteristics (e.g., vehicle location and surface), user conditions, etc. Still further, although the stages shown in the flow chart are disclosed in a particular order, it should be understood that the order is disclosed for illustrative purposes only. The stages may be combined, separated, reordered, and there may be various intermediate stages. Accordingly, it should be understood that in various embodiments, the individual stages shown in the flow chart may be performed in an arrangement different from the arrangement shown. In addition, individual stages may be added or removed from the flow chart without changing or impeding the basic scope of the depicted methods and systems disclosed herein.

[0091] Method 1000 may begin at start block 1005 and proceed to stage 1010, in which the base plate may be fastened to a location on the vehicle. By way of non-limiting example, a user may determine where to install the base plate (i.e., the center of the windshield between the left edge and the rearview mirror), clean the installation area (i.e., the windshield), and attach the base plate, for example, by using the adhesive backing 111 on the base plate 112. Beginning from stage 1010 where the base plate is installed in the vehicle, method 1000 may proceed to stage 1020, in which the hinge bracket may be coupled to the base plate and fastened to the base plate at a desired location using one or more position locks. Although the coupling orientation and operation of the device components are disclosed in a particular order for illustrative purposes, the connection orientation and operation of the device components may also occur in other arrangements. For example, the position lock may be rotated to an unlocked position such that the hinge bracket may slide onto the base plate and be positioned for optimal solar glare blocking. The position lock may then be rotated to a locked position to fasten the hinge bracket in place. In another aspect, an advantage of the present invention may be that it allows a user to couple the hinge bracket in a first orientation with the glare shield facing down or in a second orientation with the glare shield facing down by rotating the hinge bracket 180 degrees. As described herein, each coupling method provides various operating functions and positional synergy with OEM vehicle components such as the OEM sun visor.

[0092] Starting from stage 1020 where the hinged bracket is fastened to the base plate, method 1000 can proceed to stage 1030, in which the user can then reposition the auxiliary sun visor and / or glare shield from the stowed position to a plurality of other positions according to the desired glare protection. By way of non-limiting example, the auxiliary sun visor can be rotated forward from the stowed position against the windshield to block forward glare, such as high glare. In a further aspect, only the translucent glare shield can be rotated downward from the stowed position to provide a maximum viewing area through which the user can observe the driving environment. In still further aspects, the auxiliary sun visor can be rotated forward from the stowed position against the windshield, and the translucent glare shield connected to the auxiliary sun visor can also be rotated against the windshield. The auxiliary sun visor and glare shield can be moved backward from the windshield, such as to block lower glare. In various additional aspects, the present system can cooperate with the OEM sun visor to provide glare protection in multiple directions. The auxiliary sun visor can be rotated forward from the stowed position against the windshield to block forward glare, and the OEM automotive sun visor can be rotated to the side to block side glare. In this configuration, it is unlikely that the user will need to flip or move any sun visor while driving for distraction-free driving. In still further aspects, the translucent glare shield connected to the auxiliary sun visor can also be rotated against the windshield. For example, the system can also be deployed in many configurations to provide multi-directional glare protection to prevent flipping the OEM automotive sun visor forward and backward while driving. Additional deployment configurations include one or more of the following: blocking front sun glare by flipping down the solid auxiliary sun visor; positioning the OEM automotive sun visor to the window to block side glare; using an optionally tinted and / or polarized glare shield, such as sunglasses, directly in your line of sight; using both the fully extended glare shield and the solid auxiliary sun visor together when the sun is low in the sky or reflecting snow or water; and combinations thereof.

[0093] Starting from stage 1030 where the device is used to provide glare protection, method 1000 can proceed to stage 1040, in which the user returns the auxiliary sun visor, and the glare shield can be returned to the stowed position. After stage 1040, method 1000 can end at stage 1050. In a further aspect, the user can follow the various steps of method 1000 to move the hinged bracket between vehicles by detaching the hinged bracket from the first base plate installed in the first vehicle and coupling the hinged bracket to the second base plate installed in the second vehicle.
