Description

[0001] CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS

[0002] This application is a continuation-in-part of U.S. patent application serial number 16 / 240,191, filed on January 4, 2019, which is a continuation-in-part of U.S. patent application serial number 16 / 107,781 filed on August 21, 2018, the entire contents of which are hereby incorporated by reference into this document. Technical Field

[0003] The present application relates to a holder for a mobile electronic device. The holder is configured to clamp and secure the mobile electronic device to an object that may be intermittently / periodically in motion, such as a car headrest. The holder may be formed from a single integral component or from a plurality of discrete components. Preferably, the holder surrounds the periphery of the mobile electronic device, thereby protecting the mobile device in a collision situation such as falling or dropping. Background Art

[0004] Holders for mobile devices can take many forms. For example, a stand holder allows a user to place a mobile device in a standing position on a horizontal surface. However, such stand holders are not suitable for horizontal surfaces that are subject to intermittent movement because such stand holders are prone to falling or collapsing when the surface changes speed or changes from a stationary state to a moving state.

[0005] There are also such holders that are designed to attach to specific areas of mobile objects, such as car cup holders, car dashboards, car air vents, etc. However, these holders are often object-specific to the parts of the mobile object to which they are designed, and therefore can only be attached to specific objects. Some holders will even only attach to specific vehicles, such as vehicles of a specific make and model. Such holders also tend to be bulky and difficult to travel with, or are designed to permanently attach the desired object.

[0006] In general, these holders do not provide scratch or impact protection for mobile electronic devices. Summary of the invention

[0007] Therefore, it is desirable to provide a new holder for a mobile electronic device that is easy to carry and can be attached to a variety of objects. For example, the disclosed range of 1-100 is intended to disclose individually 20-90, 40-80, 30.5-50.2, 20, 67.3, 84.512924 and each other range and number falling within the cited range.

[0127] It will be appreciated that the drawings and description of the present invention have been simplified to illustrate the relevant elements for a clear understanding of the present invention, while for the purpose of clarity, many other conventional elements in the art have been removed. It will be appreciated by those of ordinary skill in the art that other elements are also desirable for realizing the present invention. However, since such elements are well known in the art and since they do not promote a better understanding of the present invention, the discussion of such elements is not provided herein. Figure 1-7A holder 1 according to an embodiment of the invention is shown. The holder 1 has an upper side 7, a lower side 8, a left side 9 and a right side 10. The rear side 11 of the holder 1 is configured to cover at least a portion of the rear side of a mobile device when attached to the holder 1, and the front side 12 is configured to expose at least a portion of the front side of the mobile device when attached to the holder 1.

[0128] In one embodiment, the holder 1 includes a housing portion 2 and a clamping portion 3. The housing portion 2 includes a pocket, recess or cavity 15 sized and configured to hold a mobile electronic device. The housing portion 2 also includes a lip or rim 19 that secures the mobile electronic device in the pocket, recess or cavity 15. Preferably, the lip or rim 19 is a deformable lip or rim that deforms to allow the mobile electronic device to be placed in the pocket, recess or cavity 15.

[0129] The clamping part 3 includes a right clamping member 4 and a left clamping member 5. The right clamping member 4 is configured to clamp, snap, snap or otherwise engage the right side 14 of the shell part 2 or the right side of the mobile device so that the right clamping member 4 is fixed to the right side 14 of the shell part 2 or the right side of the mobile device. This can be achieved, for example, by a recess, a concave portion, etc. 18 formed in or by the right clamping member, into which the right side 14 of the shell part 2 or the right side of the mobile device fits, snaps, snaps or is otherwise fixed.

[0130] Similarly, the left clamp 5 is configured to clamp, snap, snap or otherwise engage the left side 13 of the shell part 2 or the left side of the mobile device so that the left clamp 5 is fixed to the left side 13 of the shell part 2 or the right side of the mobile device. This can be achieved, for example, by a recess, a concave portion, etc. 18 formed in or by the left clamp 5, into which the left side 13 of the shell part 2 or the left side of the mobile device fits, snaps, snaps or is otherwise fixed.

[0131] The housing portion 2, the clamping portion 3, or both, includes at least one set of mating openings 16, 17. Each opening 16 communicates with a corresponding opening 17 so that a securing device 300, such as a string, line, rope, bungee, elastic cord, rope, cable, belt, etc., can be fed into one of the openings 16 and then fed out of the corresponding opening 17, or can be fed into one of the openings 17 and then fed out of the corresponding opening 16, such as Figure 22-27This allows the securing device 300 to be fed through and secured by one set of mating openings 16, 17, wrapped around an object - such as a car headrest 200 - and fed through and secured by another set of mating openings 16, 17, thereby securing the retainer 1 to an object (such as a headrest 200).

[0132] although Figure 1-7 and Figure 22-27 The holder 1 is shown to include three separate and discrete parts 2, 4, 5, however this need not necessarily be the case. For example, the holder 1 may be formed from only one part - such as from the enclosure portion 2. The fixing device 300 may then be wrapped around an object (e.g., a headrest 200) and fed through and secured by two sets of mating openings 20, 21, thereby securing the enclosure portion 2 to the object. If necessary, a second fixing device 300 may also be wrapped around the object and fed through and secured by another two sets of mating openings 20, 21 to further secure the enclosure portion 2 to the object.

[0133] As another example, the retainer 1 may be formed from two parts, such as the right clamp piece 4 and the left clamp piece 5 of the clamp portion 3. The securing device 300 may then be wrapped around an object (e.g., the headrest 200) and fed through and secured by a set of mating openings 16, 17 of the right clamp piece 4 and a set of mating openings 16, 17 of the left clamp piece 5, thereby securing the enclosure portion 2 to the object.

[0134] The groups of paired openings 16, 17 of the shell portion 2 are preferably formed such that the first two groups of paired openings 16, 17 are opposite to each other in a first direction, and the second two groups of paired openings 16, 17 are opposite to each other in a second direction orthogonal to the first direction. This allows the retainer 1 (either the shell portion 2 alone, or the shell portion 2 and the clamping portion 3 in combination) to be secured to an object (e.g., a headrest 200) in a variety of orientations or positions.

[0135] For example, the first set of mating openings 16, 17 may be arranged on the upper part of the shell part 2 (e.g., the upper side 7 and the rear side 11), and the second set of mating openings may be arranged on the lower part of the shell part 2 (e.g., the lower side 8 and the rear side 11). This allows the holder 1 to be arranged in a landscape orientation, such as Fig. 22 , Fig.23 , Fig.26 and Fig. 27 As shown in .

[0136] As another example, the third set of mating openings 16, 17 may be arranged on the left portion (e.g., left side 13 and right side 11) of the enclosure portion 2, and the fourth set of mating openings may be arranged on the right portion (e.g., right side 14 and rear side 11) of the enclosure portion 2. This allows the holder 1 to be arranged in a portrait orientation, such as Fig.24 and Fig.25 As shown in .

[0137] The use of two separate and discrete clamping members 4, 5 for the clamping portion 3 also allows the holder 1 (either the clamping portion 3 alone, or the combined enclosure portion 2 and clamping portion 3) to be secured to an object (e.g., a headrest 200) in a variety of directions or orientations. In particular, because the clamping portion 3 is formed from two separate and discrete clamping members 4, 5, the clamping portion can be configured to accommodate a range of enclosure portions 2 or mobile electronic devices of different widths or lengths. This allows the clamping portion 3 to be secured to an object such as a headrest 200 in a variety of directions or orientations. Fig. 22 , Fig.23 , Fig.26 and Fig. 27 The lateral arrangement direction / orientation shown in or Fig.24 and Fig.25 The vertical direction / orientation shown in FIG. 1 is engaged with and fixed to the enclosure part 2 or the mobile electronic device.

[0138] In addition, the clamping members 4, 5 are positioned when in the Fig. 22 and Fig.23 lateral arrangement direction / orientation as shown in or when in Fig.24 and Fig.25 The bottom of the housing portion 2 or the mobile electronic device in the vertical arrangement direction / orientation shown in the figure enables the clamps 4 and 5 to act as a stand for the housing portion 2 or the mobile electronic device to maintain the housing portion 2 or the mobile electronic device in an upright position on a horizontal surface such as a table, desktop, counter, etc.

[0139] The holder 1, and also the holder 101 described further herein, also preferably does not include any metal or magnetic material. This means that the attached device will have stronger and more reliable wireless signals / connectivity - both wireless data signals (e.g., Bluetooth, WiFi, cellular, 2G, 3G, 4G LTE, etc.) and wireless charging signals (e.g., inductive charging, non-radiative charging, radiative electromagnetic resonance charging, etc.) compared to a holder with metal components.

[0140] Each of the shell part 2, the right clamp 4 and the left clamp 5 can be injection molded or die-cut and can be formed by one or more parts of a soft and flexible material, such as an elastomeric material, a foam, ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) foam, rubber, silicone, a thermoplastic elastomer (TPE), a thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), polyolefins, similar soft plastic or rubber materials, or any combination thereof.

[0141] although Fig. 27 The securing device 300 is shown as comprising two separate items—that is, two separate cords—however, the securing device 300 may also be formed from a single string, line, rope, slackline, bungee cord, rope, cable, strap, etc. Similarly, the securing device 300 may also be formed from more than two separate items selected from strings, lines, ropes, slackline, bungee cords, ropes, cables, straps, etc.

[0142] Figure 28-59 There is shown a further embodiment of the holder 1. Although this embodiment is substantially similar to the embodiments described above, there are some differences.

[0143] for example, Fig.28 In contrast, each of the upper side 7, the lower side 8, the left side 13 and the right side 14 of the middle shell part 2 has two sets of paired openings 16, 17. Figure 1 A set of (pairing openings) is located on each of these sides. In other aspects, Figure 28-41 The shell part 2 has the Figure 1-14 The same features as in the cladding portion 2.

[0144] As another example, the right clamp 4 and the left clamp 5 each include a flexible extension 4a, 5a extending from a clamp portion 4b, 5b. Each clamp portion 4b, 5b is configured to clamp, snap, snap or otherwise engage one side of the enclosure portion 2 or one side of the mobile device so that the clamp 4, 5 is fixed to the side of the enclosure portion 2 or the side of the mobile device.

[0145] Each clamping member 4, 5 also has a connecting portion 4c, 5c located at the end of the flexible extension 4a, 5a opposite the clamping portion 4b, 5b. Each connecting portion 4c, 5c is configured to be firmly engaged and connected with the shell portion 2 via a set of mating openings 16, 17, thereby locking the connecting portion 4c, 5c to the shell portion 2, such as Fig.33 as shown in .

[0146] Preferably, each flexible extension 4a, 5a is formed in a wave pattern, such as wave-like, zigzag-shaped, etc., with alternating peaks 4d, 5d and valleys 4e, 5e. The peaks 4d, 5d and valleys 4e, 5e alternate in the extending direction from the clamping portion 4b, 5b to the connecting portion 4c, 5c. Fig.43 , Fig.47 , Fig.50 and Fig.54 In the embodiment shown in , each peak 4d, 5d also has a corresponding valley 4e, 5e on the opposite side of the flexible extension 4a, 5a along a direction substantially perpendicular to the extension direction. The wave pattern of peaks and valleys gives the flexible extension 4a, 5a additional flexibility and elasticity to assist in securing the enclosure portion 2 or the mobile device to an object, such as Fig.58 and Fig.59 The car headrest shown in . Fig.58 and Fig.59 As can be seen in FIG. 4 , the flexible extensions 4a, 5a and connecting portions 4c, 5c operate and function in the same manner as the fixing device 300 described above.

[0147] Preferably, each flexible extension 4a, 5a, clamping portion 4b, 5b and connecting portion 4c, 5c are integral with each other to form a respective integral single continuous clamping piece 4, 5. More preferably, each clamping piece 4, 5 is formed from a single homogeneous material.

[0148] Reference now Figure 60 to Figure 66 , the holder 101 includes a shell portion 102 and a handle assembly 103. As shown in the figure, the shell portion 102 is substantially the same as the shell portion 2 of the holder 1.

[0149] The handle assembly 103 includes a handle 106 and a pair of opposing connector assemblies 107 configured to attach opposite ends of the handle 106 to the shell portion 102. Each of the shell portion 102, the handle 106, and the connector assembly 107 can be injection molded or die-cut and can be formed from one or more parts of a soft, flexible material, such as an elastomeric material, foam, EVA, foam, rubber, silicone, TPE, TPU, polyolefin, similar soft plastic or rubber material, or any combination thereof.

[0150] As shown, the symmetrical handle 106 includes a thick bar portion 108, a thin bar portion 109 extending from opposite ends of the thick bar portion, and a pair of opposing attachment members 110 on the other end of the thin bar portion 109, wherein the attachment members define the ends of the handle. As in the example shown, the attachment member 110 can have a circular outer surface so that the handle assembly 103 can take the form of a headset. The attachment member 110 can also be in the form of a ring-shaped defining hole 111 to receive and engage the connector assembly 107.

[0151] Each of the connector assemblies 107 may include an outer flange 112, an attachment flange 113, and an intermediate portion 114 extending between the outer flange and the attachment flange and attaching the outer flange to the attachment flange. Fig.62 , the intermediate portion 114 is thicker along one portion for receiving into the aperture 111 and tapers from the thicker portion to a thinner portion configured for receiving through a curved passage 115, each of which extends from each of the four sides of the enclosure portion 102 to a rear portion 116 of the enclosure portion. Each of the connector assemblies 107 is shaped and dimensioned so that when the connector assembly 107 is fully inserted into the enclosure portion 102 and inserted through the corresponding aperture 111 of the attachment member 110, the outer flange 112 is positioned outside of but in abutment with its adjacent attachment member 110, and the attachment flange 113 is positioned on the rear portion 116 of the enclosure portion 102 outside and in abutment with the rear portion of the enclosure portion. In this way, the attachment member 110 of the handle 106 is held against the enclosure portion with little or no slack in the axial direction along the axis defined by and extending through the pair of outer flanges 112.

[0152] As shown, the aperture 111 of the attachment member 110 is scalloped such that the aperture includes a set of projections that define a groove 117 within the aperture. The intermediate portion 114 of each connector assembly 107 includes opposed nodules 118 corresponding to the grooves 117 of the attachment member 110 such that the opposed nodules seat within the corresponding opposed grooves of the attachment member when the connector assembly is received through the attachment member 110. In the example shown, the aperture 111 includes three sets of such opposed grooves 117 such that the connector assemblies 107 can be positioned in six different orientations relative to their respective attachment members 110. Since the connector assemblies 107 cannot rotate relative to the enclosure portion 102, the attachment member 110 can be indexed to six different rotational angles relative to the enclosure portion. In addition, the connector component 107 and the handle 106 can be made of different plastics having different elastic moduli so that either the nub 118 of the connector component 107 or the protrusion defining the groove 117 is more compressible than the other of the nub or the protrusion. In this way, the nub 118 can overcome the protrusion defining the groove 117 during rotation of the connector component 107 within the attachment member 110 of the handle 106.

[0153] like Fig.65A and Fig.65B As shown in , the handle 106 can be rotated above or below the side of the shell portion 102 so that the handle and the shell portion are generally coplanar. Fig.65C As shown in FIG, the handle 106 can be rotated to define a relatively low angle with the enclosure portion 102 so that the enclosure portion rests in a more vertical manner relative to the substrate on which the enclosure portion may be placed, and as shown in FIG. Fig.65D As shown in , the handle 106 can be rotated to define a relatively high angle with the enclosure portion 102 so that the enclosure portion can be placed in a more parallel relationship on the substrate on which the enclosure portion can be placed. In an exemplary embodiment, the handle 106 can also be indexed 180 degrees to Fig.65C and Fig.65D The relative angular position of the handle and the enclosure portion 102 is shown in each of the drawings, wherein such a position may be useful for protecting the screen of a mobile device placed in the holder 101 .

[0154] Specific reference Fig.62Each connector assembly 107 can be removed and separated from a respective one of the enclosure portion 102 and the attachment member 110 of the handle 106 by bending the attachment flange 113 so that the tab 119 of the attachment flange that normally prevents the attachment flange from being pulled out fits through the passage 115 of the enclosure portion 102 and then through the hole 110 of the respective attachment member. When removing each connector assembly 107, sufficient force must also be applied to push or pull the outer flange out of the recess of the attachment member due to the tapered portion 120 within the respective recess of the attachment member 110 to which the outer flange 112 of each connector assembly is retained when the handle assembly 103 is assembled. In this way, such tapered recess of the attachment member 110 further assists in maintaining the handle 106 against the enclosure portion 102 and maintaining the assembly of the enclosure portion 102 with the handle assembly 103.

[0155] With respect to the illustrated example, it will be appreciated that the handle assembly 103 may be assembled to the enclosure portion 102 at either of the opposing openings 121A, 121B and operated to Figures 65A-65D In addition, in some alternative arrangements, the handle 106 may be telescopic so that the attachment member 110 of the handle may be assembled to the openings on the opposite length sides of the enclosure portion 102 and to the opposite width sides of the enclosure portion using corresponding connector assemblies 107.
