Abstract
Description
[0001] field
[0002] In general, the present disclosure relates to water-in-oil (W / O) emulsion compositions useful in cosmetic products. In particular, the present disclosure describes an improved gelling system for liquid W / O emulsions that allows the composition to contain a higher percentage of water while maintaining desirable properties, such as creamy and smooth texture, excellent coverage and stability, without potential component and phase separation.
[0003] background
[0004] The following discussion is provided merely to aid the reader's understanding of the present disclosure and is not an admission that it describes or constitutes prior art.
[0005] Many currently available non-solid aqueous cosmetics (skin products and color cosmetics) are designed to improve the appearance and feel of human skin. Typically, they contain more than 10% water and moisturizers, and are known to be in the form of emulsions and gels with very low levels (less than 5%) of pigments. Unfortunately for consumers, those products may be very easy to flow and may not provide aesthetics and even coating and coverage. On the other hand, products containing high levels of pigments (higher than 5%) may appear to be sticky and are often unstable (separation and sedimentation occur over time).
[0006] Therefore, there remains a need for a gel-based cosmetic product that will provide long-lasting moisturizing and refreshing benefits, excellent coverage, and minimal product deposition, while being creamy, smooth, and stable. The present disclosure meets this need.

[0046] II. Water-in-oil emulsions with gelling system and emollients
[0047] Non-solid aqueous cosmetics containing high levels of water (i.e., greater than 15% by weight) and humectants are known in the art. These known compositions are generally in the form of gels or liquids. These cosmetics with high levels of water may contain pigments, but the compositions are generally unstable, meaning that pigmentation often occurs, and these products do not provide good skin or lip coverage. In addition, known lip products containing about 20% water are not creamy and are generally sticky, heavy, and uncomfortable to use.
[0048] The present disclosure provides a water-in-oil (W / O) emulsion composition comprising a gelling system and at least one emollient. Unlike existing W / O beauty cosmetics and compositions, the disclosed compositions are characterized by a smooth and creamy texture that provides very good coverage with a single application, but at the same time the disclosed compositions are very light / weightless, making their use comfortable all day long. The disclosed compositions are easy to apply and remove without smudging, and the disclosed compositions provide long-term hydration, which prevents the lips and skin from drying out during long-term use. In addition, in contrast to many other products that separate precipitates under conventional storage conditions, the disclosed compositions do not separate over time.
[0049] Despite high water content and textured powder and pigment concentrations, the disclosed compositions remain stable and have great cosmetic staying power. The disclosed W / O emulsions containing emollients can be used in all kinds of color cosmetic and skin product applications.
[0050] The disclosed W / O emulsion composition comprises a gelling system, which preferably comprises two or three gelling agents, including a hydrocarbon gelling agent (e.g. ), a hydrophilic gelling agent (e.g., agar, such as Ina Agar CS-110) and a hydrophobic mineral gelling agent (e.g., Bentone gel). The disclosed W / O emulsion composition further comprises a sterol-based emollient (e.g., ). The combination of more than one gelling agent and emollient allows the disclosed composition to maintain a high water content, for example greater than 15%, while maintaining stability. [0127] The following examples are given to illustrate the present disclosure. It should be understood, however, that the disclosure is not to be limited to the specific conditions or details described in these examples.
[0128] Example 1 - Preparation of an Exemplary W / O Emulsion Containing an Emollient
[0129] The following examples describe exemplary methods of preparing embodiments of the disclosed W / O emulsion compositions comprising an emollient. Table 2 below lists the components used.
[0130] Table 2 - Exemplary composition components
[0131]
[0132] Compound A was combined in the main container and heated at 90°C until a homogenous mixture was formed. Compounds B, C, D, E, F and G were then added and homogenized using Robomics (supplied by Tokushu Kika) at 4000 RPM for 2 minutes while still heating at 90°C.
[0133] Meanwhile, in a small vessel, combine all ingredients of the aqueous phase (H) and heat at 70-80°C until a clear and homogeneous mixture is obtained.
[0134] The water phase was then added to the mixture in the main container and mixed together for a further 10 minutes at 90°C until a smooth and creamy texture was obtained.
[0135] Example 2 - Determination of the quality of W / O emulsions containing emollients
[0136] The following examples were used to determine the effects of each component of the gelling system and the emollient on the physical properties of the resulting composition. Thus, a composition containing three gelling agents (i.e., a hydrophobic gelling agent, a hydrophilic gelling agent, and a hydrocarbon gelling agent) and an emollient was prepared as an exemplary W / O emulsion, and four controls were prepared, each lacking one of the components of the gelling agent or the emollient. Table 3 below discloses the components and component concentrations of each of these compositions.
[0137] Table 3 - Components of Exemplary and Comparative Compositions
[0138]
[0139]
[0140] Once the exemplary compositions and controls were prepared, they were subjected to a battery of tests to evaluate their physical properties, including texture, viscosity, emulsion stability, and storage stability.
[0141] Texture was analyzed by two (2) liquid lip makeup users immediately after applying the exemplary compositions and the control. The samples were evaluated for duration after application (i.e., how long it lasted), lightness (weight), freshness and lightness, smoothness, creaminess, coverage, and comfort.
[0142] Viscosity was measured using a Brookfield Viscometer Model RV with a TD spindle at a speed of 12 RPM at 25°C / 35% RM.
[0143] For the evaluation of emulsion stability, samples were visually inspected for separation immediately after preparation.
[0144] For evaluation of storage stability, samples were visually inspected for separation after two (2) weeks of exposure at the following temperatures: -5°C, 0°C, 25°C, 37°C, 45°C, and 37°C / 98% RH (relative humidity). Table 3 shows the results of each of these evaluations.
