[0033] Various embodiments and aspects of the present disclosure will be described with reference to the details discussed below, and the accompanying drawings will illustrate various embodiments. The following description and drawings are illustrative of the present disclosure and should not be construed as limiting the present disclosure. Many specific details are described to provide a thorough understanding of various embodiments of the present disclosure. However, in some cases, in order to provide a concise discussion of embodiments of the present disclosure, known or conventional details are not described.
[0034] References in this specification to "one embodiment" or "an embodiment" mean that a particular feature, structure, or characteristic described in conjunction with the embodiment can be included in at least one embodiment of the present disclosure. The phrase "in one embodiment" appearing in various places in the specification does not necessarily refer to the same embodiment.
[0035] The present disclosure solves the problem of interoperability of power delivery system designs for servers. An embodiment of the present disclosure provides a flexible mechanical design for a power delivery module mounting structure. The mounting structure provides several attachment locations for the power delivery module within the server chassis to be compatible with different rack configurations and corresponding bus positions. The design may include mounting rails dedicated to different types of rack configurations. For example, attachment locations for different configurations may be pre-designed on the mounting rails to be compatible with different rack bus positions. A distribution board may be assembled on the mounting rails and fixed on an adjustment rail, which is fixed to the server chassis. The adjustment rail may be attached at different vertical positions within the server chassis to vertically adjust the power distribution module for different server designs. The position of the power distribution module may be adjusted along the adjustment rail to be interoperable with several different server chassis and server rack configurations.
[0036] According to one embodiment, a device for mounting a power module to a server chassis includes a first track member attachable to the server chassis and a second track member attachable to the first track member. The second track member includes a plurality of mounting points. The device also includes a power distribution board (PDB) coupled to the second track member at one of the mounting points. The PDB provides power from a power bus of an electronic rack to one or more servers in a server chassis mounted on the rack. The PDB includes one or more power conversion devices that provide power to one or more electronic devices of the server and a group of power clips that attach the PDB to the power bus of the electronic rack.
[0037] In one example, the second track member is adjustable along the length of the first track member. In one example, each mounting point of the second track member includes: a stop slot to provide resistance to movement along the second track member; and a locking hole for fixing the PDB and the second track member to the first track member using an attachment mechanism.
[0038] In one example, the mounting points include several mounting point groups corresponding to the server rack configuration and power hardware design. In one example, the device also includes one or more side mounting structures that can be attached to the side of the server chassis. The first track member can be attached to the server chassis via the side mounting structure. In one example, the second track member includes several segmented members, each of which is individually adjustable along the first track member. In another example, the first track member includes a first set of stop grooves associated with a second set of stop grooves of the second track member, and the first set of stop grooves and the second set of stop grooves provide resistance to movement of the segmented members of the second track member along the length of the first track member.
[0039] According to one embodiment, an electronics rack of a data center includes a server rack, each server rack receiving a server chassis. Each server chassis includes a first track member, a second track member mountable to the first track member, the second track member including a plurality of mounting points. Each server chassis may include a power distribution board (PDB) coupled to the second track member at one of the mounting points, wherein the PDB provides power from a power bus of the electronics rack to one or more electronic devices of a server included in the server chassis. The PDB includes one or more power conversion devices that provide power to the one or more electronic devices of the server and a group of power clips that attach the PDB to the power bus of the electronics rack.
[0040] According to another embodiment, a method of configuring a power distribution board (PDB) in a server chassis includes: mounting a first track member to the server chassis; and mounting a second track member to the first track member, the second track member including a plurality of mounting points. The method also includes: attaching a power distribution board (PDB) to the second track member at one of the mounting points, wherein the PDB provides power from a power bus of an electronics rack to one or more electronic devices of a server included in the server chassis. The PDB includes one or more power conversion devices that provide power to the one or more electronic devices of the server and a group of power clips that attach the PDB to the power bus of the electronics rack.
[0041] Figure 1 is a top view system diagram of a server chassis configuration with an adjustable mounting structure for a power distribution module according to one embodiment. Figure 1 A design concept diagram is presented. The server chassis can be assembled with a printed circuit board, a host interface board, or any other type of logic board to perform the operation of the server. The server chassis may also include an input / output (I / O) interface, etc. The server chassis may also include a mounting structure for a power distribution module to be installed in the server chassis. The power distribution module may include a busbar clip, power conversion electronics, and control electronics. The PDB is connected to the circuit board and other electronic devices by a cable to provide power to the electronic device board. The PDB can be mounted on a mounting track, and the mounting track can be attached to the chassis via an adjustment track. In addition, the adjustment track may include a retaining groove for providing damping for the movement of the mounting track along the adjustment track at different positions on the adjustment track. Similarly, the mounting track may include a retaining groove to provide damping for the movement of the PDB on the mounting track. The adjustment track and the mounting track may each include a locking hole for fixing the entire assembly (i.e., the PDB, the mounting track, and the adjustment track) together at a position corresponding to the busbar position of the server rack.
[0042] In one embodiment, reference Figure 1, the server chassis 100 includes an I / O 104 for communicating to and from a circuit board 106 of the server chassis 100. The server chassis also includes a host interface board 102 and a circuit board 106. In one embodiment, the circuit board 106 can be a main printed circuit board. The circuit board 106 can include one or more central processing units (CPUs) or graphics processing units (GPUs) for performing operations and calculations. In another embodiment, the circuit board 106 can include a server storage solution (e.g., permanent storage), such as a data store, database, or other data storage.
[0043] In one embodiment, the PDB 112 provides power to the circuit board 106 via the connector 110 between the connection 108. For example, the connector 110 can be a connecting cable that provides power between the circuit board 106 and the cable connection 108 of the PDB. In one embodiment, the PDB 112 is mounted on a mounting structure including an adjustment track 122 and a mounting track 124. The adjustment track 122 can be fixed to the side of the server chassis 100. The mounting track 124 can be a track member that is mounted and adjustable along the adjustment track 122. The mounting track 124 can include a number of retaining grooves 118 and locking holes 120. The retaining grooves 118 can provide resistance to the movement of the PDB 112 along the mounting track 124 at specific points along the mounting track 124 corresponding to the mounting position for the PDB 112. The mounting position can correspond to the busbar position of the server rack configuration. At each mounting position, a locking hole 120 can be provided to fix the PDB in place along the mounting track 124 and the adjustment track 122. The locking knob 116 can be used to secure the PDB 112 to the mounting rail 124 and the adjustment rail 122 at the locking hole 120. The PDB 112 can include a busbar clip 114 for connecting the PDB 112 to the busbars of the server rack when the server chassis 100 is mounted to the server rack. Once mounted to the server, the PDB 112 can then convert the power provided by the busbars to the power requirements of the circuit board 106 (e.g., 48V / 54V to 12V).
[0044] Figure 2 is a diagram of a mounting structure 200 for a PDB of a server chassis according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. An adjustment rail 222 may be secured to the server chassis. The adjustment rail 222 may be compatibly mounted on different types of chassis having different form factors, such as 19-inch or 21-inch chassis types. The mounting structure 200 also includes a mounting rail 224. The mounting rail 224 may be mountable to the adjustment rail 222 and adjustable along a length of the adjustment rail 222. Because the adjustment rail 222 is designed for different server platforms, the mounting rail 224 may be configured to accommodate different server rack configurations.
[0045] like Figure 2 As shown, the adjustment track 222 and the mounting track 224 include several groups of retaining grooves 218 and locking holes 220. The reference group 202 of the retaining grooves 218 and the locking holes 220 can be a standard position, and the standard position can be used across different configurations without considering a specific configuration. The mounting track 224 includes two groups of retaining grooves and locking holes (hereinafter referred to as mounting groups in combination). For example, the first group of the mounting group corresponds to the mounting position for the 19-inch server chassis configuration, and the second group of the mounting group corresponds to the mounting position for the 21-inch server chassis configuration. The adjustment track can include mounting groups for each possible position that can correspond to the bus position in the rack configuration. Therefore, during installation, the PDB board can be installed at any depicted position of the mounting group according to the rack bus design. The adjustment track can be designed based on the actual server chassis specifications, and the mounting track and the corresponding retaining grooves and locking holes can be designed according to the actual rack standard architecture and size specifications.
[0046] Figure 3 Another example of a mounting structure 300 according to an embodiment of the present disclosure is depicted. Figure 2 As depicted in the mounting structure 200, the mounting structure 300 includes an adjustment rail 322. However, the mounting rail 324 of the mounting structure 300 includes segmented members of the mounting rail 324 rather than one elongated member. The individual mounting rail 324 members can be adjusted along the adjustment rail 322 to correspond to different busbar configurations. Thus, the segmented members of the mounting rail 324 can provide flexibility to be compatible with many different server rack busbar configurations. In addition, the PDB can be assembled to one of the segments of the mounting rail 324 and can then be slid along the adjustment rail 322 to the appropriate position (i.e., to a specific busbar position of the rack configuration).
[0047] Figure 4 A side view of components of the mounting structure 400 is depicted. The adjustment rail 422 is located at the bottom of the mounting structure and is directly attached to the server chassis (e.g., the side of the server chassis). In another example, the adjustment rail 422 can be built into the server chassis as an integral part. The adjustment rail 422 includes a locking hole 420 for securing the PDB 412 and the mounting rail 424 in place on the adjustment rail 422 using the attachment mechanism 410. Thus, the mounting structure provides structural support for the power clips and the PDB 412 attached to the busbars of the server rack. Detent grooves 418A-B can be included on the mounting rail and the adjustment rail. Specifically, a detent groove 418A can be included on the mounting rail, and a detent groove 418B can be included on the adjustment rail. For example, in Figure 3The embodiment shown may use a retaining groove 418B on the adjustment rail. The mounting rail 424 is assembled between the PDB 412 and the adjustment rail 422. The mounting rail 424 may also include a retaining groove 418A on the top surface for positioning the PDB 412 on the mounting rail 424. The mounting rail 424 may also include additional retaining grooves (e.g., for Figure 3 Attachment mechanism 410 may be used to secure PDB 412, mounting rail 424, and adjustment rail 422 together. Figure 4 As depicted in FIG. 4 , the attachment mechanism 410 may be a screw or other attachment mechanism.
[0048] In another example, if Figure 5 , the attachment mechanism 510 can be a screw, pin, or other mechanism that can be vertically extracted from the adjustment rail 422 without being completely extracted from the PDB 412 and the mounting rail 424. For example, the attachment mechanism 510 can include a spring that is coupled to the screw to provide a downward force on the screw or pin so that when aligned with the locking hole of the adjustment rail 422, the pin will be forced into the locking hole 420 to fix the position of the PDB 412 and the mounting rail 424 on the adjustment rail 422. In some embodiments, any type of attachment mechanism and any type of attachment rail can be used. In some embodiments, the attachment mechanism does not require tools to be engaged or released.
[0049] Figure 6 A side view of an assembled mounting structure 600 is depicted according to some embodiments. Figure 4 and Figure 5 As depicted, mounting structure 600 includes adjustment rail 622 and mounting rail 624 to which PDB 612 is secured. Adjustment rail 622 is attached to the server chassis, and PDB 612 and mounting rail 624 are attached to adjustment rail 622. Mounting rail 624 and adjustment rail 622 also include one or more detent grooves 626 for providing for securing mounting rail 624 segments (e.g., Figure 3624 along the adjustment rail 622. For example, the mounting rail 624 may include a protruding retaining groove 626, and the adjustment rail includes a depression for corresponding to the retaining groove 626. Thus, the retaining groove 626 provides positioning of the mounting rail 624 segments on the adjustment rail 622 at specific locations corresponding to different rack configurations and power hardware designs. In addition, one or more busbar clips 605 are attached to the PDB 612 for connecting the PDB 612 to the busbars of the server rack. As depicted, the PDB 612 and the mounting rail 624 can be fixed in place on the adjustment rail 622 using an attachment mechanism 610 such as a screw. For example, the mounting rail 624 and the adjustment rail 622 include several groups of locking holes and retaining grooves 626. Thus, the PDB can be attached to the mounting rail 622 and the adjustment rail 624 at one of the several groups of retaining grooves and locking holes.
[0050] Figure 7 An example rail mounting structure 710 installed in a server chassis 700 is depicted according to some embodiments. As shown, the rail mounting structure 710 can be attached to a side mounting structure 720 of the server chassis 700. Thus, the rail mounting structure 710 can be arranged at any position within the server chassis 700. Since the busbar clips and PDB 712 are movable along the rail mounting structure 710 (as described above), the PDB 712 can be installed at any horizontal position of the mounting structure where the locking holes of the rail mounting structure 720 are located. Therefore, the rail mounting structure 710 provides improved efficiency of the server chassis and power delivery system with high compatibility across server rack configurations and server board designs.
[0051] Figure 8 A side view of a rail mounting structure 810 installed in a server chassis 800 is depicted according to some embodiments. Figure 8 As depicted in FIG. 8 , mounting structures may be mounted on the top and rear of the server chassis 800 to provide additional space and flexibility in the design of the server's electronics. For example, this provides the flexibility to use larger electronics boards and cooling equipment 815 within the server chassis 800 because the busbar clips and PDB 812 may be mounted anywhere within the server chassis 800.
[0052] Fig. 9A , Fig. 9B and Fig. 9C Depicted are mounting structures for use with different server rack and busbar configurations. Fig. 9A A server rack configuration 900A is depicted with a single busbar located on the right hand side of the server rack. Fig. 9B A server rack configuration 900B is depicted having a single bus bar location in the middle of the server rack. Fig. 9C A server rack configuration 900C is depicted with two busbar positions on the right and middle of the server rack. For example, a two busbar configuration may be used in a high power density rack. The busbars may alternatively be in any other configuration or position. 9A to 9C The use compatibility of the mounting structure described herein with different bus positions and configurations is illustrated. Thus, a PDB for a server included in a server rack does not need to be designed for a specific server rack configuration or bus position, and the PDB can be adjusted to be compatible with a specific configuration used with it. In addition, as illustrated in the figure, the mounting structure can also be used with different power units, such as a power supply unit, a battery backup unit, or any other power unit. Thus, the mounting structure also provides compatibility with any other board or power supply unit connected to the bus for providing or receiving power in the server rack.
[0053] refer to Fig. 9A , the server rack 900A includes one or more servers 902A-B, a power supply unit (PSU) 912, and a battery backup unit (BBU) 916. One or more servers 902A-B may include electronic components for providing computing services. The PSU may provide DC power to the servers 902A-B from the AC input 914 via a bus 920. In one example, the bus 920 includes a connection for providing power from the PSU and a second connection to ground the circuit and complete the circuit. The BBU 916 may include one or more batteries connected to the bus 920 via a BBU connector 908 to provide power to the servers 902A-B when a power outage occurs or the PSU 912 is otherwise unable to provide power to the servers 902A-B. Therefore, each server 902A-B, the PSU 912, and the BBU 916 are connected to the bus 920. In one embodiment, mounting structure 922 is attached to the server chassis of servers 902A-B to support and configure the PDB and power clips 904A-B for connecting the PDB to bus 920. The PDB and bus clips 904A-B can be adjusted along the mounting structure 922 to provide compatibility with several different server rack bus configurations. In another example, a mounting structure can also be provided for the PSU connector 906 of the PSU 912 or even the BBU connector 908 of the BBU 916. Fig. 9A As shown, the PDB and power clips 904A-B and PSU connector 906 are arranged on the right hand side of the mounting structures 922A-C to be compatible with the bus bar 920 configured on the right side of the server rack.
[0054] Reference Fig. 9B, the PDB and power clips 904A-B of the servers 902A-B and the PSU connector 906 of the PSU 912 are each mounted at a middle position of the mounting structures 922A-C. Therefore, the power clips 904A-B and the PSU connector 906 are configured to be compatible with the bus bar 930 located at the center of the server rack.
[0055] Reference Fig. 9C , multiple power clips 904A-B and PSU connectors 906 are positioned on each mounting structure 922A-C. The server rack configuration 900C includes two busbars: busbars 940 and 950, for providing power to servers 902A-B. For example, servers 902A-B may be power-intensive servers that require more power than can be provided by a single busbar. Therefore, additional busbars may be used to provide the necessary power to the components of servers 902A-B. As depicted, for compatibility, power clips 904A-B and PSU connectors 906 may be mounted on mounting structures 922A-C at corresponding locations of busbars 940 and busbars 950.
[0056] Fig.10 1 is a flow chart illustrating a method 1000 for configuring a PDB on a mounting structure in a server chassis according to some embodiments. The method 1000 begins at operation 1010, where a person installs an adjustment rail to the server chassis. The adjustment rail can be installed at any height within the server chassis. For example, the adjustment rail can be attached to each side of the server chassis to provide support for the PDB to be mounted on the adjustment rail.
[0057] At operation 1020, personnel configure the mounting rails on the adjustment rails to the corresponding busbar configuration of the server chassis. The mounting rails may be rail members that may be movable along the adjustment rails.
[0058] At operation 1030, personnel configure the mounting height of the adjustment rail. For example, the mounting height of the adjustment rail may be adjusted to accommodate the height of electronic components of the server board.
[0059] At operation 1040, personnel configure the PDB position on the mounting rails and the adjustment rails. In one example, the mounting rails include one or more detent slots to provide detent points for a locked position associated with one or more server racks and busbar configurations.
[0060] At operation 1050, personnel lock the PDB and the mounting rail onto the adjustment rail to fix the position of the PDB within the server chassis. The PDB may be coupled to the mounting rail and the adjustment rail at positions of the mounting rail and the adjustment rail that correspond to the configuration of the server chassis (e.g., at corresponding stop grooves). The mounting rail and the adjustment rail may each have a number of locking holes at which the PDB is attached and the mounting rail is fixed to the adjustment rail.
[0061] In the foregoing description, embodiments of the present disclosure have been described with reference to specific exemplary embodiments of the present disclosure. However, it is apparent that various modifications may be made thereto without departing from the broader spirit and scope of the present disclosure as set forth in the appended claims. Therefore, the description and drawings should be regarded as illustrative rather than restrictive.
