[0001] priority

[0002] This application claims priority to U.S. Provisional Application No. 63 / 325,002, filed on March 29, 2022, the entirety of which is incorporated herein by reference. Technical Field

[0003] The present disclosure relates generally to cosmetic compositions, and more particularly to cosmetic compositions that may be free of certain ingredients, such as polyethylene glycol-based surfactants, and methods of making and using the same. Summary of the invention

[0004] One embodiment is a cosmetic composition comprising: (a) a modified hectorite organoclay; (b) at least one hydrophobic solvent; and (c) at least one amphiphilic agent.

[0005] Another embodiment is a cosmetic method comprising applying such a cosmetic composition to a keratinous surface. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0007] Unless otherwise specified, "a" or "an" means one or more.

[0008] As used herein, the term "approximately" preceding a specific numerical value may refer to ±20% of the numerical value; ±18% of the numerical value, ±15% of the numerical value; ±12% of the numerical value; ±8% of the numerical value; ±5% of the numerical value; ±3% of the numerical value; ±2% of the numerical value; ±1% of the numerical value or ±0.5% of the numerical value. Unless otherwise specified, all content information about composition ingredients expressed as percentages (%) refers to mass percentages (%) relative to the total mass of the composition. The expression "water-in-oil composition" and related expressions used herein refer to water-in-oil emulsion compositions in which an aqueous (water) phase is dispersed in an oil phase. The expression "microplastic beads" used herein refers to particles containing solid polymers to which additives or other substances may have been added, and wherein ≥1% w / w of the particles have (i) all dimensions of 0.1 μm ≤ x ≤ 5 mm, or (ii) for fibers, a length of 0.3 μm ≤ x ≤ 15 mm and an aspect ratio of > 3. The expression "solid polymer-containing particles" refers to (i) particles of any composition having a continuous solid polymer surface coating of any thickness, or (ii) particles of any composition having a solid polymer content of ≥ 1% w / w.

[0009] Impurities such as 1,4-dioxane and ethylene oxide in polyethylene glycol (PEG) surfactants may cause concerns about meeting the "clean beauty" requirements (such as safety, non-toxicity and transparency) in cosmetic labels. Many consumers also have environmental concerns about the low biodegradability of silicone ingredients (such as silicone solvents). However, omitting PEG ingredients (such as PEG surfactants) and / or silicone ingredients poses challenges to formulating cosmetic compositions. For example, omitting these ingredients may affect the stability of the cosmetic composition. Many water-in-oil compositions use organoclay-gel systems (such as bentonite-gel systems) with PEG ingredients such as PEG surfactants and silicone solvents. Omitting PEG surfactants and / or silicone solvents from such compositions makes it difficult to activate the organoclay gel (such as bentonite gel) and makes the composition difficult to stabilize.

[0010] In some embodiments, the present disclosure can provide a stable cosmetic composition and the composition provides activation for an organoclay gel (such as bentonite gel) without PEG-based ingredients (such as PEG surfactants) and / or silicone ingredients (such as silicone solvents). However, in other embodiments, the present disclosure can provide a cosmetic composition that can be used with a PEG surfactant and / or a silicone solvent.

[0011] The present disclosure provides a cosmetic composition that may include (a) a modified hectorite organoclay; (b) at least one hydrophobic solvent; and (c) at least one amphiphilic agent.

[0012] As used herein, the term "free of" may refer to the total content of ingredients (such as those described below) in a cosmetic composition, meaning that these ingredients are completely absent from the composition.

[0013] The term "activation" may refer to the formation of a gel structure by the organoclay in the composition.

[0014] In some embodiments, the present compositions may be free of synthetic polymers.

[0015] In some embodiments, the present composition may be free of any polyethylene glycol-containing ingredients (eg, PEG surfactants), any polymeric ingredients (eg, (meth)acrylates or (meth)acrylamides); and / or any silicones (eg, silicone solvents).

[0016] In some embodiments, the composition may be free of any microplastic particles as defined above. Therefore, the present composition may qualify as a "clean beauty" cosmetic product.

[0017] In some embodiments, the cosmetic composition may have sunscreen properties. For example, the cosmetic composition may have a sun protection factor SPF of at least 2, or at least 5, or at least 10, or at least 20, or at least 30, or at least 40, or at least 50, or at least 60, or at least 70, or at least 80, or at least 90, or at least 100.

[0018] The composition can be used in many cosmetics. For example, the composition can be used in skin care products such as skin creams, sunscreen products, concealer products, primer products; foundation products, hair care products, deodorants, lip products such as lipsticks or lip balms, moisturizers such as colored or tinted moisturizers.

[0019] In some embodiments, the cosmetic composition can be used alone. In other words, the composition can be applied alone to a keratinous surface or substrate, such as skin, for example, lips, eyelids, face or hair, of an object (such as a person) without another composition.

[0020] In some embodiments, the composition (which may be a cosmetic composition) may be used with another product, such as a top coat, a primer, or a powder.

[0021] In many embodiments, the composition may be a water-in-oil composition. Such a water-in-oil composition may have reduced oil leakage, which may be leakage of a hydrophobic solvent. In many embodiments, the composition may have no measurable oil leakage or no measurable hydrophobic solvent leakage at all.

[0022] For example, in some embodiments, the gel system in the water-in-oil composition may contain 1% to 90% of a hydrophobic solvent, such as oil. In some embodiments, "oil leakage" may refer to the migration of a hydrophobic solvent, such as oil, out of the gel structure, which may cause phase separation and / or uneven accumulation of oil droplets on the gel structure. Therefore, a composition with such "oil leakage" may become unstable over time.

[0023] In many embodiments, the composition of the present invention may have good spreadability and / or sensory properties due to its viscosity. This may mean that the composition is uniform, smooth and free of lumps when applied.

[0025] The aqueous phase of said composition comprises water. The water content in said composition can vary. In some embodiments, the amount of water can be 1 mass % to 90 mass % or 5 mass % to 80 mass % or 10 mass % to 70 mass % or 15 mass % to 75 mass %, or any value or sub-range within these ranges. In some embodiments, said composition can include one or more hydrophilic glycols, which can reduce the water content of said composition.

[0090] The amount of UV scattering powder in the composition may vary. In some embodiments, the amount of UV scattering powder may be 0.1% to 30% by mass, or 0.5% to 25% by mass, or 1% to 20% by mass.

[0091] Organic UV absorbers

[0092] In some embodiments, the composition may include one or more organic UV absorbers. In this case, the one or more organic UV absorbers can provide at least some sunscreen properties, such as UV protection properties, to the composition.

[0093] The sunlight that reaches the Earth's surface has a portion of UV-B radiation (280 to 320 nm) and a portion of UV-A radiation (320 to 400 nm), the UV-A radiation directly bordering the visible light region. Especially in the case of UV-B radiation, the effects on human skin are evident - through sunburn.

[0094] The maximum of the erythemal activity of sunlight is given in a relatively narrow range around 308 nm.

[0095] For protection against UV-B radiation, numerous compounds are known, in particular derivatives of 3-benzylidenecamphor, of 4-aminobenzoic acid, of cinnamic acid, of salicylic acid, of benzophenone and of 2-phenylbenzimidazole.

[0096] It is also important to provide filter substances for the range between about 320 nm and about 400 nm (the so-called UV-A zone), since its rays can cause reactions in photosensitive skin. It has been found that UV-A radiation causes damage to the elastic and collagen fibers of the connective tissue, which leads to premature aging of the skin and should be considered as the cause of many phototoxic and photoallergic reactions. The harmful effects of UV-B radiation can also be enhanced by UV-A radiation.

[0097] UV photoprotective filters which can be used are oil-soluble organic UV-A filter compounds and / or UV-B filter compounds and / or water-soluble UV-A filter compounds and / or UV-B filter compounds.

[0123] The embodiments described herein are further illustrated by the following working examples, but are not limited in any way to the following working examples.

[0124] Example

[0125]

[0126]

[0127] The compositions in Table 1 were prepared using the following manufacturing method:

[0128] 1. Disperse disteardimethylammonium hectorite in the oil phase at 3000 rpm; 2. Add preservative bentone gel activator or other target ingredients and disperse them at 3000 rpm; 3. Add surfactant and disperse them at 3000 rpm.

[0129] The compositions in Table 1 were evaluated for viscosity and oil leakage.

[0130] Evaluate:

[0131] 1. Viscosity

[0132] Viscosity was measured by BLOOKFIELD DV-1 viscometer with LV-04, 12 rpm, 1 min

[0133] 2. Oil leakage%

[0134] The sample was placed in a 2 oz glass bottle and left to stand for 1 week. Then the oil leakage and the total height from the bottom were measured. Oil leakage (height %) = (height of oil leakage) / (height of the whole) * 100 White cast.

[0135] Preservatives such as phenoxyethanol, methylheptylglycerin, ethylhexylglycerin, caprylhydroxamic acid, propylene glycol and butylene glycol act well as Benton gel activators and give stable bentonite systems containing non-PEG / non-silicone surfactants. The data in Table 4 show that it is difficult to thicken oil gels efficiently except for benton activators. Propylene carbonate is a well-known activator, but it has many regulatory issues, such as CMR and Proposition 65, and petrochemical origin. Preservatives such as phenoxyethanol, methylheptylglycerin, ethylhexylglycerin, caprylhydroxamic acid, propylene glycol and butylene glycol show good activation of bentonite without strong dispersion and special equipment.

[0136] Tables 2-4 test the effects of various amounts of phenoxyethanol, propylene glycol, or methylheptylglycerin.

[0137] The compositions of Tables 2-4 were prepared using the following manufacturing method: 1. Disperse disteardimethylammonium hectorite in the oil phase at 3000 rpm; 2. Add a preservative bentone gel activator (phenoxyethanol, propylene glycol or methylheptylglycerin) and disperse it at 3000 rpm; 3. Add a surfactant and disperse it at 3000 rpm.

[0138] The compositions of Tables 5-7 were evaluated as follows.

[0139] Evaluate:

[0140] 1. Viscosity

[0141] Viscosity was measured by BLOOKFIELD DV-1 viscometer with LV-04, 12 rpm, 1 min

[0142] 2. Oil leakage%

[0143] The sample was placed in a 2 oz glass bottle and left to stand for 3 months. Then the oil leakage and the total height from the bottom were measured. Oil leakage (height %) = (height of oil leakage) / (height of the whole) * 100 White cast.

[0144] Table 2. Selected oil gel compositions containing various amounts of phenoxyethanol

[0145]

[0146] The data in Table 2 show that small amounts of phenoxyethanol improve oil leakage. Larger amounts provide more improvement in oil leakage and thicken the oil gel composition.

[0147] Table 3. Selected oil gel compositions containing various amounts of propylene glycol

[0148]

[0149] The data in Table 3 show that small amounts of propylene glycol improve oil leakage. Higher amounts provide more improvement in oil leakage and thicken the oil gel, but the effect of propylene glycol is less than that of phenoxyethanol, see Table 2.

[0150] Table 4. Selected oil gel compositions containing various amounts of methylheptylglycerol

[0151]

[0152]

[0153] The data in Table 4 show that small amounts of methylheptylglycerol improved oil leakage. Higher amounts improved oil leakage more and thickened the oil gel.

[0154] Tables 5-6 test the effects of various solvents on the oil gel compositions.

[0155] The composition of Table 5 was prepared using the following method: 1. Disperse disteardimonium hectorite in the oil phase at 3000 rpm, 2. Add the preservative benton activator (phenoxyethanol) and disperse it at 3000 rpm.

[0156] The compositions of Table 5 were evaluated as follows.

[0157] Evaluate:

[0158] 1. Viscosity

[0159] The viscosity was measured by a BLOOKFIELD DV-1 viscometer using LV-04, 12 rpm, 1 minute.

[0160]

[0161]

[0162] The data in Table 5 show that phenoxyethanol as a bentone gel activator significantly increases the viscosity of oil gel compositions with different solvents including polar esters, non-polar hydrocarbon oils, vegetable oils, and silicone oils.

[0163] The data in Table 5 show that phenoxyethanol works as a Benton activator with a wide variety of solvents as it can thicken oil gel compositions containing a variety of solvents. Phenoxyethanol may perform better with hydrocarbon solvents than with silicone solvents.

[0164] The composition of Table 6 was prepared using the following manufacturing method: 1. Disperse disteardimethylammonium hectorite in the oil phase at 3000 rpm: 2. Add preservative benton activator and disperse it at 3000 rpm; 3. Add surfactant and disperse it at 3000 rpm.

[0165] The compositions of Table 6 were evaluated as follows:

[0166] Evaluate:

[0167] 1. Viscosity

[0168] The viscosity was measured by a BLOOKFIELD DV-1 viscometer using LV-04, 12 rpm, 1 min.

[0169] Table 6.

[0170]

[0171]

[0172] The data in Table 6 show that phenoxyethanol used as a bentone gel activator with non-PEG / non-silicone surfactants yields good oil gel compositions with high viscosity, except for Comparative Examples 15-16 which used silicone solvents with silicone surfactants.

[0173] Tables 7-10 show that bentone gel activators such as phenoxyethanol perform better with polyglycerol surfactants because they stabilize the water-in-oil composition and provide good spreadability.

[0174] The composition of Table 7 was prepared using the following manufacturing method: 1. Disperse disteardimethylammonium hectorite in the oil phase at 3000 rpm; 2. Add a water-soluble solvent and disperse it at 3000 rpm; 3. Add a surfactant and disperse it at 3000 rpm; 4. Mix the aqueous phase and add it to the oil phase and emulsify at 4000 rpm.

[0175] The compositions of Table 7 were evaluated as follows:

[0176] Evaluate:

[0177] 1. Viscosity

[0178] The viscosity was measured by a BLOOKFIELD DV-1 viscometer using LV-04, 12 rpm, 1 min.

[0179] 2. Oil leakage

[0180] The oil leakage of the samples was observed and evaluated at 50°C for 4 weeks.

[0181] +: No oil leakage

[0182] + / -: Minor oil leakage

[0183] -: Obvious and noticeable oil leakage

[0184] 3. Spreadability

[0185] +: More than 70% of the 10 subjects felt that the spread was good

[0186] + / -: More than 40% of the 10 subjects felt good spreading

[0187] -: Less than 40% of 10 subjects felt good spreading

[0188] Table 7. Selected water-in-oil organic SPF cream compositions

[0189]

[0190]

[0191] The data in Table 7 show that in the W / O cream composition, phenoxyethanol as bentone gel activator improves oil leakage. In the case of polyglyceryl-6 polyricinoleate, stability becomes better from low viscosity to high viscosity. Polyglyceryl-6 polyricinoleate also improves spreadability. Phenoxyethanol and / or methylheptylglycerin act well as activators.

[0192] The composition of Table 8 was prepared using the following manufacturing method: Manufacturing method: 1. Disperse disteardimethylammonium hectorite in the oil phase at 3000 rpm; 2. Add preservative bentone gel activator and disperse it at 3000 rpm; 3. Add surfactant and disperse it at 3000 rpm; 4. Add powder and inorganic UV filter and disperse it at 4000 rpm; 5. Mix the aqueous phase and add it to the oil phase and emulsify at 4000 rpm.

[0193] The compositions of Table 8 were evaluated as follows:
