[0037] Herein, a configuration of a battery pack according to an embodiment will be described.
[0038] Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a state in which a cover is coupled to a battery cell in a battery pack according to an embodiment; Figure 2 is an exploded perspective view illustrating a state in which a cover is separated from a battery cell in a battery pack according to an embodiment.
[0039] See also Figure 1 and Figure 2 A battery pack 100 according to an embodiment may include a plurality of battery cells 110, a cover member 150 coupled to the battery cells 110 while covering the outer surface of the battery cells 110, and a pack case 160 coupled to the battery cells 110 through the lower surface of the cover member 150 (see Figure 3 ) and a cooling plate 170 (see Figure 3 In one or more embodiments, the battery pack 100 may further include a spacer 120 between adjacent battery cells (eg, every two adjacent battery cells) among the battery cells 110. In one or more embodiments, the battery pack 100 may further include a heat insulating member 130 between the lower surface of the battery cell 110 and the cover member 150.
[0040] Each of the battery cells 110 may include an electrode assembly provided therein. The electrode assembly may be formed so that each of the first electrode plate, the separator, and the second electrode plate formed in a thin plate shape or a film shape is stacked, or the stack of the first electrode plate, the separator, and the second electrode plate is wound. In some embodiments, the first electrode plate may be operated as a negative electrode and the second electrode plate may be operated as a positive electrode. In other embodiments, the first electrode plate may be operated as a positive electrode and the second electrode plate may be operated as a negative electrode. In one embodiment, each of the battery cells 110 may further include an electrode terminal (or terminal) 111.
[0041] For example, the first electrode plate may be formed by applying a first electrode active material such as graphite or carbon to a first electrode current collector formed as a metal foil made of copper or nickel, and may include a first electrode uncoated portion as an area where the first electrode active material is not applied. The first electrode uncoated portion may provide a path for current flow between the first electrode plate and the outside.
[0042] For example, the second electrode plate may be formed by applying a second electrode active material such as a transition metal oxide to a second electrode collector formed as a metal foil made of aluminum, and may include a second electrode uncoated portion as a region where the second electrode active material is not applied.
[0043] The separator may be located between the first electrode plate and the second electrode plate to prevent or substantially prevent a short circuit and enable movement of lithium ions. The separator may be formed as a film made of polyethylene, polypropylene, or a combination thereof.
[0044] The electrode assembly may be housed in a housing together with an electrolyte. The electrolyte may include an organic solvent such as ethylene carbonate (EC), propylene carbonate (PC), diethyl carbonate (DEC), ethyl methyl carbonate (EMC), or dimethyl carbonate (DMC), and a lithium salt such as LiPF6 or LiBF4.
[0045] The housing may be sealed by components such as a cover or side panels. As an example, Figure 2 An embodiment is illustrated in which the case is sealed by the side plates, and the electrode terminals 111 coupled to the first electrode plate and the second electrode plate are formed on both sides or opposite sides of the battery cell 110. That is, the electrode terminals 111 may be located on the side portions of the battery cell 110. The electrode terminals 111 may be formed so as to protrude from both sides or opposite sides of the case.
[0046] For example, each of the battery cells 110 may include a vent formed in its lower surface. In one embodiment, the vent may be formed to be thinner than other areas of the battery cell 110, and therefore, if the internal pressure in the battery cell 110 is equal to or higher than a certain pressure (e.g., a reference pressure), the vent may be opened earlier than other areas of the battery cell 110. If the internal pressure in the battery cell 110 is equal to or greater than the reference pressure, the vent may guide the internal gas in the battery cell 110 to be discharged to the outside, thereby preventing or substantially preventing accidents such as explosions. In one or more embodiments, the battery pack 100 may include a structure such as a bus bar formed on a side portion or an upper portion of the battery pack for electrical connection of the battery pack. In one embodiment, the vent is formed in the lower surface of the battery cell 110, and the structure may not be affected by the opening of the vent of the battery cell 110.
[0047] The separator 120 may be disposed between adjacent battery cells (e.g., every two adjacent battery cells) in the battery cells 110. The separator 120 may allow the adjacent battery cells 110 to be electrically isolated from each other and block heat from being transferred from one battery cell 110 to another battery cell 110 adjacent thereto. The separator 120 may be implemented as a thermal insulation sheet. For example, the separator 120 may be implemented as a ceramic paper sheet or a mica sheet.
[0048] The heat insulation member 130 may be arranged on the lower surface of the battery cell 110. The heat insulation member 130 may be arranged on the lower surface of the battery cell 110 where the vent is formed. If any of the vents in the battery cell 110 is opened, the high temperature substance may be discharged from the corresponding battery cell 110. If the high temperature substance spreads to the adjacent battery cell 110, for example, spreads to the vent of the adjacent battery cell 110 that is susceptible to heat, the vent of the adjacent battery cell 110 may be opened. This may cause the problem of an event occurring in a certain battery cell 110 being transmitted to another battery cell 110 adjacent thereto. In one embodiment, because the heat insulation member 130 covers the outer side of the lower surface of the battery cell 110 where the vent is formed, the heat insulation member 130 can prevent or substantially prevent any spread of high temperature substances from the battery cell 110 from directly contacting another battery cell 110. In one or more embodiments, the insulation member 130 may be disposed on an outer surface of the battery cell 110 so as to cover the vent of the battery cell 110 , and thus the insulation member 130 may protect the vent, which is relatively susceptible to heat, from high temperature diffused substances.
[0049] The heat insulating member 130 may block heat transfer from any dispersed high temperature substance in the battery cell 110 to another battery cell 110, and may be formed so as to be opened with the opening of the vent if the vent operates due to internal pressure in the corresponding battery cell 110. Therefore, the heat insulating member 130 may protect the battery cell 110 from the high temperature dispersed substance without interfering with the operation of the vent. In one embodiment, for example, the heat insulating member 130 may include mica (e.g., a mica sheet).
[0050] The cover member 150 may surround the battery cell 110 to protect the battery cell 110 from external impact. In one embodiment, the cover member 150 may include a lower cover member 151 disposed below the battery cell 110, a side cover member 152 disposed along the side surface of the battery cell 110, an upper cover member 153 disposed on the battery cell 110, and an end cover member 154 coupled to the frontmost and rearmost battery cells among the battery cells 110. In one or more embodiments, the cover member may be referred to as a plate.
[0051] The lower cover member 151 may be disposed on an outer surface of the insulation member 130, for example, on a lower surface of the insulation member 130. The lower cover member 151 may provide mechanical rigidity to the outer surface of the insulation member 130. The lower cover member 151 may prevent or substantially prevent the battery cells 110 from melting or rupturing.
[0052] In one or more embodiments, the lower cover member 151 may include an opening 151a formed in a region of the lower cover member 151 corresponding to the exhaust member of the battery cell 110. Since the exhaust member does not interfere with the lower cover member 151 due to the opening 151a in the lower cover member 151, the operation of the exhaust member of the battery cell 110 is not disturbed or impeded.
[0053] In one or more embodiments, the lower cover member 151 may be formed so that only the area of the lower cover member 151 corresponding to the vent of the battery cell 110 is open. Therefore, even if the vent formed in the lower surface of the battery cell 110 is opened, the lower cover member 151 may prevent or substantially prevent the electrode assembly from being disengaged downward. The lower cover member 151 may prevent or substantially prevent heat transfer by preventing or substantially preventing the high temperature electrode assembly from being disengaged when an event occurs.
[0054] As described below, the cooling plate 170 may be coupled to a lower surface of the lower cover member 151 so as to allow heat generated in the battery cells 110 to be dissipated through the lower surface of the lower cover member 151 .
[0055] The side cover member 152 may be located on the lower cover member 151 and may be coupled to both side surfaces or opposite side surfaces of the battery cell 110. With this configuration, the side cover member 152 may protect the battery cell 110 and may allow the battery cells 110 to be electrically connected to each other.
[0056] In one embodiment, each of the side cover members 152 may include a side frame 152a arranged along a side surface of the battery cell 110 in an arrangement direction of the battery cell 110, a lower coupling frame 152b coupled to a lower side of the side frame 152b and coupled to the lower cover member 151 and the heat insulation member 130, and an upper coupling frame 152c coupled to an upper side of the side frame 152a and coupled to the upper cover member 153. In one or more embodiments, each of the side cover members 152 may further include a plurality of bus bars 152d coupled to side portions of the side frame 152a and electrically connecting the electrode terminals 111 of the battery cell 110 exposed through the side frame 152a to each other, and an insulating cover 152e coupled to an outer surface of the bus bar 152d to cover the bus bar 152d.
[0057] The upper cover member 153 may be coupled to the side cover member 152 and may be arranged on the surface of the battery cell 110, for example, on the upper surface of the battery cell 110. For example, the upper cover member 153 may dissipate heat from the battery cell 110 while being in contact with the upper surface of the battery cell 110. For example, the upper cover member 153 may have an air cooling structure. In one embodiment, the upper cover member 153 may include a heat sink.
[0058] The end cover members 154 may be coupled to the frontmost and rearmost battery cells among the battery cells 110. The end cover members 154 may be coupled to the lower cover member 151, the side cover member 152, and the upper cover member 153, and the battery cell 110 may be accommodated in an inner space defined by the cover members 151, 152, 153, and 154.
[0059] Figure 3 is an exploded perspective view showing a state in which a cooling plate is separated from a battery cell in a battery pack according to an embodiment; Figure 4 is a partially enlarged view showing a state in which a cooling plate in a battery pack according to an embodiment is coupled to a battery cell; Figure 5 is a rear perspective view of a cooling plate in a battery pack according to an embodiment; and Figure 6 is a partial perspective view of a cooling plate in a battery pack according to an embodiment.
[0060] See also Figure 3 , the pack housing 160 may be coupled to the lower surface of the cover member 150 and may cover the side surface and the lower surface of the cover member 150. With this configuration, the pack housing 160 may accommodate the battery cell 110 coupled to the cover member 150. As an example, Figure 3 An embodiment is illustrated in which the cover member 150 is coupled to the central area of the pack case 160. In other embodiments, a plurality of cover members 150 may be accommodated in the pack case 160, or other electronic components and the cover member 150 may be accommodated together in the pack case 160. The pack case 160 may protect the cover member 150 and the battery cell 110 accommodated in the pack case 160, and may connect the battery pack 100 to the outside.
[0061] See also Figure 3 and Figure 4 , the cooling plate 170 may be located on the inner surface of the lower portion of the pack housing 160. The cooling plate 170 may be in contact with the lower surface of the cover member 150, and may be thermally coupled to the battery cell 110 located inside the cover member 150. The cooling plate 170 may dissipate heat from the battery cell 110 while in contact with the lower surface of the battery cell 110. In one embodiment, the cooling type of the cooling plate 170 may be an air cooling type or a water cooling type. In one embodiment, if the cooling type of the cooling plate 170 is a water cooling type, the heat generated in the battery cell 110 may be dissipated to the outside by the refrigerant provided in the cooling plate 170.
[0062] The cooling plate 170 may include a plate portion 171 and a fastening portion 172 fixing an edge of the plate portion 171 to the bottom surface of the pack case 160 .
[0063] See also Figure 3 to Figure 6In one embodiment, the plate portion 171 may be formed as a flat plate having a substantially rectangular shape. The plate portion 171 may support the cover member 150 disposed on the upper surface of the plate portion 171. In some embodiments, the plate portion 171 may contain a refrigerant therein to dissipate heat transferred to the plate portion 171 to the outside through the cover member 150, thereby cooling the battery cell 110 provided inside the cover member 150.
[0064] In one embodiment, the plate portion 171 may include a vent protrusion portion 171a formed in an approximately central area in the width direction of the plate portion 171 at a position corresponding to the position of the vent member of the battery cell 110, and a flange portion 171b formed along the periphery of the vent protrusion portion 171a so as to protrude downward from the lower surface of the plate portion 171.
[0065] A hole corresponding to the exhaust member may be formed in each exhaust protrusion 171a, and the exhaust protrusion 171 may be formed along the periphery of the hole so as to protrude downward from the plate portion 171. Such an exhaust protrusion 171a may provide rigidity to the area around the exhaust member of the battery cell 110. The exhaust protrusion 171a may protrude downward along the periphery of the exhaust member having a relatively small thickness compared to other areas of the battery cell 110, thereby protecting the exhaust member from external forces applied to the exhaust member. The exhaust protrusion 171a may expose the exhaust member through the hole formed in the exhaust protrusion 171a, and thus there is no interference or obstruction to the operation of the exhaust member, for example, when the exhaust member is opened to allow the gas in the battery cell to be discharged to the outside through the exhaust member when an event occurs. In one embodiment, the exhaust protrusion 171a may be formed to have a height of about 1 mm to about 2 mm. If the height of the vent protrusion 171 a is equal to or greater than 1 mm, the rigidity required to protect the vent may be ensured, and if the height of the vent protrusion 171 a is equal to or less than 2 mm, it may be suitable for reducing the overall weight of the battery pack 100 .
[0066] The flange portion 171b may be formed on the lower surface of the plate portion 171. With this shape, the flange portion 171b may increase the overall rigidity of the cooling plate 170 and may prevent or substantially prevent sagging of the cooling plate 170. In one embodiment, the height of the flange portion 171b may be 1 mm to 2 mm greater than the height of the exhaust protrusion portion 171a.
[0067] If the height of flange portion 171b is greater than that of vent protrusion portion 171a by 1 mm or more, it may be suitable to reduce the total weight of battery pack 100. If the height of flange portion 171b is greater than that of vent protrusion portion 171a by 2 mm or less, sufficient space through which gas in battery cell 110 may flow may be ensured.
[0068] In one or more embodiments, the flange portion 171b may be formed to be bent in a substantially U-shape along the periphery of the exhaust protrusion 171a formed on the plate portion 171 so as to surround the exhaust protrusion 171a on three sides (or along three sides) or from three directions. If the exhaust member of the battery cell 110 is opened and the gas in the battery cell 110 is discharged from the exhaust member, the gas may first pass through the exhaust protrusion 171a, may move along the U-shaped flange portion 171b, and may then be discharged to the outside of the battery pack 100 through the open side of the flange portion 171b. The flange portion 171b may not only ensure the rigidity of the battery pack 100, but may also facilitate safe gas discharge by guiding the movement of the gas when an event occurs in the battery cell 110. In one embodiment, the flange portion 171b may expose the exhaust protrusion 171a in at least one direction.
[0069] As described above, in the battery pack 100 according to one or more embodiments, the cooling plate 170 that contacts the lower surface of the cover member 150 that accommodates the battery cell 110 may include a vent protrusion 171a formed corresponding to the vent member of the battery cell 110 and a flange portion 171b formed so as to surround at least one area around the vent protrusion 171a, thereby ensuring the rigidity of the cooling plate 170 and guiding the gas generated when an event occurs to move smoothly or easily through the vent member.
[0070] It is obvious from the above description that a battery pack according to one embodiment may include a cooling plate provided so as to contact the lower surface of a cover member accommodating a battery cell, and the cooling plate may include a vent protrusion portion formed corresponding to a vent member of the battery cell and a flange portion formed so as to surround at least one zone around the vent protrusion portion, thereby ensuring the rigidity of the cooling plate and guiding the gas generated when an event occurs to move smoothly or easily through the vent member.
[0071] Although embodiments for implementing a battery pack according to the present disclosure have been described above, the present disclosure is not limited to the above embodiments, and those skilled in the art will appreciate that various modifications may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the present disclosure as set forth in the claims.
