Description

Technical Field

[0001] The present disclosure relates to a hair spray composition comprising ethylcellulose, hydroxypropylcellulose, a synthetic polymer alone or a blend of combinations thereof and a method for preparing the same. Background Art

[0002] Traditionally, hair sprays are used at the end of the styling process to secure the hairstyle and protect it from the elements such as humidity and wind. As the styling market and consumer behavior have evolved, hair sprays have been used as finishing sprays and styling sprays. Finishing sprays are designed to be used as the final step in the styling process and are sprayed on the hair to hold the hairstyle and protect it in wet / windy conditions, essentially setting the hairstyle. These sprays dry quickly, making the hair less flexible and restricting the natural movement of the hair. These hair sprays typically coat the hair with polymers, giving the hair a stiff, sticky feel. Styling sprays are designed to be used while creating the hairstyle, and therefore, styling sprays provide better manageability, combability, and flexibility during the styling process. Styling sprays have more water and dry longer, allowing consumers to customize, comb, and create the hairstyles they want. An ideal hair spray (i) has good hold, (ii) exhibits good hair curl retention, (iii) is easily removed when shampooed, (iv) is not too sticky in nature, and (v) does not leave visible residue or flakes on the hair fiber. Hair spray is usually in aerosol form, but there are also non-aerosol pump sprays. The challenge of polymers used in aerosol hair sprays is that the polymers need to be compatible and stable in the presence of propellants and soluble in alcohol and water. Synthetic polymers are widely used because of their excellent retention and moisture resistance and propellant and solvent compatibility in aerosol formulations. Although these polymers provide the desired benefits, they do not meet the sustainability standards set by governments and non-governmental organizations. Therefore, there is increasing pressure on hair spray manufacturers to provide formulations that use natural, sustainable ingredients while meeting the expected benefits. As consumers are looking for environmentally friendly and sustainable products, the hair spray market segment is working to provide natural, sustainable alternatives to synthetic polymers. Many natural polymers with the desired sustainability and biodegradability are difficult to incorporate into hair spray formulations due to their natural solubility and compatibility with solvents and propellants.

[0003] US Patent No. 10,722,447, issued to ISP Investments LLC, discloses a sprayable composition comprising a composite of (A) at least one charged (or pseudo-charged) polymer having a molecular weight of about 125,000 amu or more; and (B) at least one rheology-modified cross-linked polymer having opposite charge and at least one carboxyl functional group. The composition can provide a spray having a median particle size of less than about 175 um.

[0004] US Patent Application Nos. US2004-0180067 and US2004-0180068, both issued to International Flavors & Fragrances, disclose a granular composition comprising 0.5% to 95% of an organic soluble cellulose material dissolved in 5% to 99.5% of an organic flavor chemical and a continuous phase of an organic fragrance chemical, the organic soluble cellulose material being selected from ethyl cellulose and hydroxypropyl cellulose. The granules are formed by dissolving the cellulose material in the flavor / fragrance to produce a continuous phase product, followed by forming the desired particle size by a technique.
